Since taking charge of Arsenal back in December 2019, Mikel Arteta has done an awful lot to bring the club back to the top.

One of the areas he has had the most influence over has been transfers, and while he has overseen some poor signings, he’s overseen just as many, if not more, brilliant ones.

The likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, David Raya and Gabriel Magehelese have all joined the club under the Spaniard’s tutelage and are now some of the first names on the teamsheet today.

However, arguably one of the most crucial cogs in the Arsenal machine and one of the best defenders in the world, William Saliba, was signed by Unai Emery, although if recent reports are to be believed, Arteta might be about to welcome in someone who could be the next version of the incredible Frenchman.

Arsenal might be on the hunt for their first Premier League title in two decades next season, but that hasn’t stopped the club from looking for more talented youngsters in recent weeks and months.

For example, just a few weeks ago, the club was linked with a £38m move for Greek wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas, who is just 17 years old and managed to produce seven goal involvements in 39 games for Genk this season.

After that, reports began appearing linking the club with a £85m move for Juventus gem Kenan Yıldız, who only turned 20 last month but has been able to score 12 goals and provide eight assists in 50 games this season.

However, while both prospects are incredibly exciting and look set for bright careers, it would be hard to describe either one as being the next Saliba, unlike Jorrel Hato.

Yes, according to a recent report from Football Transfers, Arsenal have maintained their intense interest in the Ajax star.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Gunners are now ‘accelerating their move’ for the Dutchman and that ‘talks are scheduled for this week’ with the player’s camp.

In terms of the price of a potential deal, the report claims that the youngster is valued at around €50m, which comes out to about £43m.

It might sound like a lot of money for a young defender, but with how well he’s played in the Netherlands and the potential so many believe him to have, it might be a fee worth paying, especially as he could be the next Saliba.

Why Hato could be Saliba 2.0

So, the first thing to point out here is that, over the last season and a bit, Hato has progressed from a centre-back who can play at left-back into someone who is now more of a left-back than anything else.

However, just because he’s no longer playing in the exact same position as Saliba does not mean he couldn’t emulate the Frenchman’s move, career and eventual importance, as there are more than a few similarities between the pair.

The first of which is the hype and expectation around the young Dutchman and the resulting line of teams who are seemingly interested in signing him.

For example, even though he’s still just 19 years old, the Rotterdam-born gem has not only made 111 senior appearances for Ajax but also captained them on a few occasions.

Such a rapid ascent to senior football only lends credence to respected analyst Ben Mattinson’s claim that he has the “potential to be an elite lockdown FB.”

This has, unsurprisingly, led to massive teams like Chelsea and Premier League champions Liverpool being heavily linked with the superb prospect.

This isn’t too dissimilar to the situation in 2019 when, before the Gunners secured the services of Sailba, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United were also interested in signing him thanks to a brilliant 18/19 with Saint-Étienne.

Moreover, just as the Frenchman was included in UEFA’s ’50 for the future’ list in July 2019, Ajax’s “exceptional” gem, as dubbed by Mattinson, was named in GOAL’s 2025 NXGN list, which highlights the 50 best teenage talents in the game.

Finally, if this deal werewere to happen, the six-capped international would be joining the North Londoners at 19 years old, just a year younger than the Frenchman when he completed his move in 2019.

Ultimately, while a comparison to someone as talented as Saliba invites an immense amount of pressure, Hato looks like he really could go on to be as good a defender for Arsenal as the world-class centre-back.

With the 49ers Enterprises looking to make their mark, Rangers are now reportedly set to sign a versatile forward who has become convinced by the Ibrox project ahead of the summer transfer window.

Set to complete their takeover of the Scottish giants, the 49ers will be hoping to turn things around at Rangers and transform the Gers into the dominant champions they once were. As seen at Elland Road and Leeds United already, too, the American owners are perfectly capable of leaving their mark on a club and achieving their goals.

However, with a new manager needed and Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dominance only growing stronger, the extent of the 49ers’ task at Rangers cannot be overstated. And they must get things right this summer.

To that end, a number of names have already been linked with the job at Ibrox. The likes of Rafael Benitez represent the experienced choice, whilst Steven Gerrard would perhaps be the one that splits the most opinions after how he left Rangers for Aston Villa in 2021. Meanwhile, other names such as Danny Rohl and Davide Ancelotti would certainly be intriguing to watch in their own right.

With the Scottish Premiership now concluded for another season too, the Gers may have their answer sooner rather than later over just who steps into the role. The end of the campaign also means the end of Barry Ferguson’s interim role in charge of the club, but he has reiterated his desire to take the permanent role more than once.

The interim boss told reporters in recent weeks: “Everybody’s got an opinion, I don’t care about people’s opinion, I know I can do the job. I know I’ve got a real good staff behind me. I’ve been asked this question two or three weeks in a row, I think it’s clear, it doesn’t scare me one single bit.”

Meanwhile, away from the dugout, it almost goes without saying that a large part of the 49ers’ project will be the recruitment that they go in pursuit of this summer, which looks set to start with a Paris Saint-Germain talent.

At just 18 years old, whether Camara would make an immediate impact at Ibrox remains to be seen. The winger, who can play on both sides, has enjoyed an impressive season at youth level, scoring nine goals and setting up another four in 25 games in all competitions. After failing to feature for the first team, however, the young Frenchman looks set to leave in pursuit of senior football.

Whether Camara’s reported arrival is a sign of things to come at Rangers will also be interesting to watch, as the 49ers attempt to build their project and turn things around at the Scottish club.

Blues pursuing new attacking midfielder

Throughout the campaign, Enzo Maresca’s side have largely done a good job crafting opportunities for Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in attack, having created 83 big chances in the Premier League, the joint-second highest total in the division.

Those figures suggest a lack of cutting edge from the strikers may be a problem for the Blues, so it is little wonder they are set to pursue a new striker in the summer transfer window, and they are now leading the race for Borussia Dortmund star Serhou Guirassy.

However, Maresca is also clearly keen to bring in a new playmaker this summer, with Lyon assist king Rayan Cherki among the potential targets, alongside Como’s Nico Paz, who has impressed manager Cesc Fàbregas with his performances in Italy this season.

There has now been a new update on Chelsea’s pursuit of Paz, with a report from Spain revealing the west Londoners are now readying a €30m (£26m) offer for the 20-year-old, as they are determined to win the race for his signature.

Doing so could be a tall order, however, with the Argentine attracting attention from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid, who retain the option to re-sign their former player for the bargain fee of less than €10m (£8.6m), which could be appealing.

The report states the youngster has been one of the Serie A’s stars this season, so it is little wonder he has garnered interest from some European giants, and he is said to be a prime target for the Blues, whose model is built around signing young players.

"Decisive creator" Paz impressing in Italy

Although Real Madrid have a buy-back clause, they may be ruing the decision to let the Como star leave in the first place, given the level of his performances in the Serie A this season.

The Spain-born maestro has six goals and seven assists to his name in 30 appearances, and his displays have earned him a call-up to national side Argentina, setting up a goal on his debut against Bolivia back in October.

The starlet has developed a strong relationship with Como forward Assane Diao, and Ben Mattinson lauded him as a “decisive creator” after setting up the Senegal international’s goal in the 3-0 victory against Lecce last time out.

Paz’s performances for Como suggest he is now ready for a move to a top club, so it is exciting news that Chelsea are stepping up their transfer pursuit, but Real Madrid’s cheap buy-back clause could pose a major problem.

Manchester City are still on course for Champions League qualification after one of the most unlikely comebacks you’ll see all season.

On Saturday lunchtime, the Sky Blues found themselves 2-0 down at home to Crystal Palace, with the Eagles having a third ruled out for offside, before squandering another gilt-edged opportunity, cutting Man City apart time after time with ease.

Thus, with 25 minutes on the clock, few would have forecast that the Citizens would run out 5-2 winners, as transpired.

Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick got the comeback started and then Omar Marmoush lashed home an equaliser soon after, with second-half goals from Mateo Kovačić and then youngsters James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly completing the turnaround.

So, with six games remaining, the Sky Blues remain in the hunt for a top five finish but, if they’re to make it, Pep Guardiola must give more opportunities to his “top talent” who’s showing flashes of a certain Davild Silva.

What made David Silva such a special player

David Silva arrived at Manchester City in the summer of 2010 for a reported £30m, a big fee at the time, as part of their first wave of eye-catching signings, alongside Jérôme Boateng, Yaya Touré, James Milner, Aleksandar Kolarov, Edin Džeko and Mario Balotelli.

During Silva’s first season in Manchester, he was a key figure in the side that won the FA Cup, beating Stoke 1-0 in the final, thereby securing the club’s first piece of major silverware for 35 years.

The following season, quite famously, the Citizens pipped Manchester United to the Premier League title on the final day, and this has really proved to be just the start of their dominance over the last decade or so.

Former teammate Kyle Walker claims that Silva is the best player he’s ever played with, while ex-Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher told the Telegraph that he believes the Spaniard is Man City’s ‘best-ever player’.

The 22-year-old has been on Man City’s books since the age of 11 and that was his 31st appearance for the first team, although only seven of these have been starts, all in the Community Shield, EFL Cup or FA Cup prior to this weekend.

He did see significantly more game time during a two-season loan spell at Sheffield United, making 75 appearances for the Blades, so let’s assess why he’s being compared to Silva.

The table emphasises that McAtee still has a long way to go to ever reach Silva’s level, but he certainly has the potential to do so.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labels him a “top talent”, impressed by his “electric pace and acceleration” as well as his “high technical” level and “dribbling” ability. Those last few traits, combined with the youngster’s marvelous left foot and low centre of gravity, are certainly reminiscent of Silva in his pomp.

Guardiola, meantime, said on Saturday “I know how good he is…we can rely on him”, so McAtee has certainly proved he deserves more starts during the remainder of this season.

91 & 157* vs Pakistan, Abu Dhabi (2013/14)The retirements of longtime stalwarts Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara were fast approaching, and Mathews’ Test captaincy, still in its infancy, was, perhaps unfairly, being compared to that of his soon-to-be-gone predecessors.But as Sri Lanka’s batting wilted under not-very-testing conditions, slumping to 124 for 8 after being put in, Mathews began to showcase a hitherto unseen Test mettle. A counterattacking 91 off 127, shielding the tail, dragged the visitors to a subpar but acceptable 204, though the main course was still to come.Sri Lanka wound up conceding a 179-run first innings lead, but if the first innings was Mathews fighting back, the second showed a side many hadn’t yet seen as he ground his way to an unbeaten 157 off 343 deliveries.It helped set a final day target of 302, but more importantly ate up time, ensuring Pakistan had little chance to attempt the chase. But in the summer of 2014, Mathews was at the peak of his powers.Following an uninspired Sri Lankan first innings, England were threatening to bat Sri Lanka out of the game. The hosts had lost just two wickets by the time they surpassed Sri Lanka’s 257, but Mathews’s 4 for 44 snaked through England’s tail and ensured the lead didn’t go beyond 108.It was with bat though that Mathews truly shaped the game to his will, in an innings that was every bit the line between victory and defeat. His partnership alongside Mahela Jayawardene had helped extend Sri Lanka’s lead, but certainly not to match-winning territory. Jayawardene’s fall led to two more wickets, stunting Sri Lanka’s progress and leaving their lead below 200 with just three wickets in hand.It was here that Mathews steeled his resolve, as might an Anime hero on the verge of collapse. Sri Lanka’s collective hand weakened, but Mathews’ power grew as he shepherded an equally dogged Herath to dismantle England with precision and a devastating sense of clarity. Their 149-run stand for the eighth wicket was the second-highest for Sri Lanka.His 160 came off 249 deliveries, perhaps regulation by modern standards, but blazing in that era – particularly in a Sri Lankan context. A show of defiance

111 vs India, Delhi (2017)Sri Lanka had never won a Test in India, and going into this series any hope of that stat changing was as low as it had ever been. The first match had ended in a draw but in the second, India had scampered home by an innings. The third was seemingly heading in the same direction, headlined by a first-innings Virat Kohli double-ton.Adding to Sri Lanka’s misery was the weather. Air pollution levels in Delhi had reached “very unhealthy” levels, with several Lankan players struggling to cope and one even vomiting in the dressing room. At one point Sri Lanka were left with just 10 available players on the field, a contributing factor towards India’s eventual declaration.This served to bring an edge to an already tetchy contest, with India unimpressed by the number of medical stoppages in play called for by Sri Lankan players. Perhaps it was this which spurred on Mathews, as he and Dinesh Chandimal put on a 181-run fourth wicket stand.Mathews had passed fifty just thrice in his 10 previous Tests, and had openly spoken of the unending pressure of his role as captain and senior batter. But here he dipped into his reserves of experience, to negate the varying threats posed by the quartet of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.Despite his best efforts, Sri Lanka would still end up over 150 in the red, but it showed the youngsters in the side that grit and hard work could get the job done, even in conditions as tough as this. He did it all day

83 & 120* vs New Zealand, Wellington (2018)Mathews had come into this game with a point to prove. Dropped from the white-ball side by then head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe over fitness concerns, he was a man on a mission. In the first innings he had struck a defiant 83, but saved his most pointed retort for the final innings.With Sri Lanka staring down the barrel at 13 for 3, some 283 runs behind New Zealand, and two full days of cricket ahead, Mathews was joined at the crease by Kusal Mendis. What followed was a bloody-minded display of batting that nobody seemed quite prepared for, even if the pitch that had begun to ease out.Against an outstanding New Zealand attack that contained Neil Wagner, Tim Southee and Trent Boult, Mathews and Mendis gave nothing away over a whole day’s play. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson conceded as much afterwards, exclaiming that his side had tried every trick possible but to no avail.This was an innings most memorable for Mathews’ push-up celebration upon reaching his century, directed at the dressing room. This though would not detract from Mathews’ and Mendis’ focus, as the pair batted out the entirety of day four, as well as 12 overs on day five – their stand worth 274 off 655 deliveries – before rain brought an end to the game.

Over time, we have seen some iconic central defenders come and go, with Italy especially having the knack of producing some of the greatest centre-backs football has ever witnessed.

20 Fernando Hierro

Starting the countdown is Fernando Hierro, who made more than 600 appearances for Real Madrid during a 14-year stint at the Bernabeu.

Even capable of playing in a defensive midfield role if required, Hierro had unbelievable ability on the ball for a centre-back, something which helped him play in the Premier League at the age of 39. The Spaniard won five La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies with Madrid.

One of numerous Italians on the list is Giorgio Chiellini, who retired in 2023 at the age of 39 after a glittering 23-year career.
