We were capable of winning the series – Younis

Which will it be for the last day of this Test series? Will it be the Pakistan that we saw towards the end of the Brisbane Test, never quite down and pushing towards what would have been the most epic scaling of a target in Test cricket? Or will it be the Pakistan of Melbourne’s last day, unable to bat out 67 overs on a blameless surface to secure a draw?It is difficult to believe that this Pakistan side is one bad session from yet another whitewash in Australia, what would be the fourth in a row. Difficult as much because this is no vintage Australia side and that this was Pakistan’s most settled side in nearly 15 years to visit; difficult because, for once, Pakistan’s batting has done enough good work most of which their supposedly better halves have wasted. It hasn’t worked out that way but even this deadest of dead rubbers holds some point for Pakistan. A draw will be their best result since the Sydney win over 20 years ago. It will be small consolation, but consolation enough and perhaps an appropriate way to sign off on the Misbah era.”We want to finish this series on a good note,” said Younis Khan, who ended Pakistan’s first innings unbeaten on 175, his first hundred in Australia. “It will be better for us if we show some fight. It will not be easy. Fifth day of a Test, in Sydney, they have two spinners and they have good fast bowlers.”You can’t say [which Pakistan will turn up]. But my wish and effort is – though we cannot win the series, we were capable of winning it but we didn’t – but at least, if we do well tomorrow, if we fight tomorrow, it will be very good for the Pakistan cricket and the side.”It has been a strange tour from which to glean positives. The highs have been exquisite and solely reserved for the batsmen, but they have all come with a bittersweet after-taste. Asad Shafiq’s hundred in the fourth innings at Brisbane, Azhar Ali’s double-hundred at the MCG and now Younis’ 34th century – ordinarily they would be cause for greater celebration for Pakistani batsmen in Australia but they might end up as the footnotes of a whitewash.Younis’ innings itself was unusual in that it came in a dead rubber (only the second of his 34 for which that is the case) and it brought mixed feelings.”Definitely,” he said. “I don’t believe there needs to be big individual performances – I believe in having even minor performances but those which help you to winning a game, towards winning, towards positive result.”But there could be longer-term benefits. “It is a good sign for Pakistan that Azhar for instance scored a double in the last Test and it was Pakistan’s best innings in Australia. Big names have come here, big openers have come here and they didn’t do as well.”Also Asad Shafiq, the way he played in that Test, and then my innings. I think from a series like this, if you have those kinds of innings, it really motivates and inspires youngsters back home. Back home there is no cricket but against top teams – although this is a young Australia team, rebuilding and not like the ones we faced in 2004 and even 2010 – but these performances, the youngsters in the country get good motivation.”I came a bit late to this series so I can’t highlight this [hundred] that much. But on the other side, I did have a desire to get a century here so I’m thankful for that.”

Tottenham Want "World-Class" Postecoglou Alternative

Tottenham Hotspur might well have established a frontrunner for their managerial vacancy, but one respected journalist suggests that the race is far from over.

What's the latest on Luis Enrique to Tottenham Hotspur?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano suggested that despite Ange Postecoglou emerging as a fine option for Daniel Levy, Luis Enrique is not one to be discounted.

He claimed:

"I think we have to keep an eye on the situation of Luis Enrique because Enrique is in conversation with Napoli. But the Napoli president confirmed that he has a feeling that, for Enrique, the priority is the Premier League.

"So he is maybe waiting for Tottenham's decision before he keeps going in the conversations with Napoli. Luis Enrique's name is one we have to follow."

With the Spaniard seemingly waiting for a top-flight job in England before confirming his role at Napoli, it seems an opportunity remains for the Lilywhites to hijack this move.

Would Luis Enrique be an upgrade on Ange Postecoglou?

The Spaniard boasts pedigree beyond most who have been linked with the post, namely due to his exploits in Barcelona, as he oversaw one of the greatest club sides in recent history.

With a front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, the Catalan giants were led to an unprecedented treble, adding to the numerous other titles he holds.

His counter-attacking 4-3-3 system might not exert the same control over a game that Postecoglou has done in Scotland, but it cannot be faulted for its effectiveness.

Whilst his most recent venture with the Spanish national team was not as successful as he would have hoped, his exit still led writer Muhammed Butt to brand him a "world-class coach", suggesting they were worse off without him.

The same could not be said for the Australian, who could quite easily be replaced at Celtic Park given the ease with which the Scottish giants often dominate their division. Of the last 12 seasons, they have only been dethroned on one occasion.

ange-postecoglou-celtic

Across the sprawling 431-game career of the 53-year-old, including spells at AS Roma and Celta de Vigo as well as the two aforementioned, he has lost just 89 games, scoring 935 in the process.

His teams pride themselves on a quick, vertical style that exploits defensive frailties. With the pace at the disposal of the Spurs squad, this also seems far more likely to reap immediate rewards, rather than the many years it would take to convey Postecoglou's convoluted style.

Whether it be the standard of their careers, the trophy cabinet they boast or the aura they command, Enrique stands as a marked upgrade to Levy's current first-choice candidate.

NSW coast to win with Hughes, Maddinson tons

ScorecardNic Maddinson thumped 112 off 89•Getty Images

Centuries by Nic Maddinson and Daniel Hughes propelled New South Wales to a six-wicket victory over Victoria in the day-night Matador Cup match at North Sydney Oval.Maddinson and Hughes were able to do what the Bushrangers could not, going on from their starts to reach three figures and leave the Blues’ middle order with a simple task after both were dismissed.Victoria’s captain Matthew Wade perhaps erred also by not calling the left-arm spinner Jon Holland into the attack until the 34th over. Holland went on to take three wickets, but they arrived too late. The Bushrangers had earlier seemed set for a far bigger score than they ultimately managed, but the inability of any of the batsmen to go on to a truly substantial score counted against them. Only 52 runs were taken from the final 10 overs of the innings, as Doug Bollinger proved particularly effective.

Daniel Levy Slammed For Spurs Call On 51 y/o

Journalist Alasdair Gold has slammed the Tottenham Hotspur board for the "bewildering" decision not to try and appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager.

Did Levy try to hire Pochettino again?

In the last few days, it has been confirmed that the former Spurs boss will be joining London rivals Chelsea this summer.

As per Sky Sports News, the 51-year-old Argentine will arrive as the Blues' new head coach on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year.

It will no doubt be strange for many Tottenham fans to see a man once so loved, now in the dugout of another Premier League team – who also happens to be one of their club's biggest rivals.

And what will hurt even more is the fact that they too are in need of hiring a new manager and yet Daniel Levy and the board didn't even approach Pochettino about a possible return to north London.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold confirmed that it's true, "he was never sounded out" and then suggested it was a baffling decision.

He said (4:45): “I've seen people saying, you know, blaming it all on Levy, the club ENIC, whoever you want to call it, the board… for not ever making that phone call to him, which it is bewildering that he was never sounded out, definitely.

"But there you go…”

Why do Spurs fans love Pochettino?

It's no secret that a large section of the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase would have loved to see their former coach return this summer.

Indeed, earlier on in the season, during an unconvincing win over Brighton & Hove Albion, the home crowd was heard loudly singing Pochettino's name.

The Argentine was sacked back in 2019 without winning a trophy but led the side to a Champions League final and brought an attacking brand of football to the club that was appreciated by the fans.

Indeed, journalist Graham Hunter has told Chelsea supporters to expect a team that loves "possession of the ball" and is "always attacking, playing to win – not to draw."

With that in mind – and the small fact that Tottenham haven't been able to find a manager who actually wants to join – it does seem odd that Levy and co have not seriously considered  speaking to Pochettino about a possible return.

All in all, it seems as though Spurs' loss will be Chelsea's gain as he now arrives back in the Premier League while his former side remain directionless for the time being.

Aston Villa Have A Special Star In £30m Talent

Aston Villa have had lots to smile about this season, since the emergence to form under Unai Emery, the club have rocketed up to 7th in the table and could still grasp European football should they continue to perform in their remaining four games.

The Villains have seen improvements all over the pitch since the Spaniard took over from Steven Gerrard, from Tyrone Mings to John McGinn, the Midlands side have challenged doubters and recorded top performances seeing them shoot up the table.

While Gerrard opted for a narrower approach in midfield, the four-time Europa League winning coach has equipped his middle-of-the-park attackers with a license to roam, gifting more chances going forward and feeding goal-getter Ollie Watkins leading the line.

One player that has emerged as a rising star under Emery’s system is 21-year-old Jacob Ramsey who has been given a key role in the Spaniard’s approach to play which has been rewarded with his impressive performances.

Dubbed to be “top class in the future” by Premier League legend Jamie Carragher, the young maestro has flourished this season, seeing his value rocket to a high of £23m; a worthy graduate from Villa’s academy.

How much is Jacob Ramsey worth?

The Englishman’s rise to form has been recognised in the league, contributing to nine goals in 31 appearances this season, scoring four himself and assisting five.

Securing as many as 2,286 minutes in the English top-flight deserves some praise in itself, however the youth product has taken it upon himself to get involved amongst the goals.

The Birmingham-born gem has earned an average match rating of 6.90 in the league according to Sofascore, placing him in Villa’s top five performers in this successful campaign – level in fifth with Ollie Watkins. Goals aren’t the only thing that Ramsey has been applauded for, the midfielder ranks at third for highest pass completion rate the final third (89%).

The 21-year-old puts in a shift defensively too, ranking in the top 9% of players in Europe’s top five leagues – when compared to his positional peers – for blocks, averaging 1.76 per 90 mins.

Therefore, there is little surprise that the midfielder’s value has risen to a figure around the £23m mark currently, cementing himself into Villa’s team and Emery’s plans for seasons to come.

Speaking after the Villains victory over Leeds United back in 2022, in which Ramsey netted twice, former boss and English midfield legend Steven Gerrard lauded he was “loving” coaching the £75k-per-week attacking midfielder who had been given room to “express himself” at the club.

It’s encouraging that with the change in manager has come more opportunities for the rising star to show his worth. Journalist Dean Jones highlighted the progression of the Englishman under the guidance of Emery when talking to GIVEMESPORT saying he has “benefited” from the Spaniard’s system, and tipped him to “show what he’s really capable of” in the 2023/24 campaign.

With the youngsters value rising and Emery’s first full season with Villa coming after the summer break, it’s a chance for Ramsey to take it to the next level in the early moments of his career in the Premier League.

Clearly, given the evidence above, Villa have hit the jackpot with the 21-year-old.

£46k-p/w Man Slammed As Newcastle Lose 2-0

Journalist Lee Ryder has slammed Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson after his 5/10 display against Arsenal on the weekend.

What's the latest on Callum Wilson and Newcastle United?

The Magpies' hopes of finishing inside the top four took a blow on Sunday at St James' Park as they lost to their Premier League rivals.

Indeed, Martin Odegaard's first-half strike was then compounded by an own goal from Fabian Schar as the Gunners picked up all three points away from home.

Despite the loss, Champions League qualification still looks likely for Newcastle who sit third in the division, three points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool despite having played one game fewer.

But manager Eddie Howe will no doubt be disappointed to have lost this big match and it seems as though one of his stars let him down on the day.

Indeed, in the player ratings for ChronicleLive, Ryder noted just how little Wilson managed to actually impact the game with his 5/10 display.

The journalist wrote: "Has been unbelievable of late. But didn't manage a shot and had just 19 touches."

How bad was Wilson against Arsenal?

It was actually a bit of an experiment for Howe to play Wilson upfront with Alexander Isak, as both were starting together for the first time.

However, this ploy failed in the eyes of Daily Mail journalist Daniel Matthews, who wrote: "But Wilson endured one of his quieter afternoons, while Isak threatened only in flashes before being moved to No 10. And then No 9 for the final 12 minutes after Wilson came off and the experiment was shelved."

And when you look at the stats on SofaScore, you can see that £46k-p/w Wilson didn't have the best performance up against the Arsenal backline.

Arsenal's Jorginho in action with Newcastle United's Callum Wilson

Indeed, he actually finished the game having had fewer touches than Nick Pope. Indeed, the goalkeeper has 34 while the striker had only 17.

On top of that, Wilson was wasteful in possession giving the ball away 11 times and completing just 3/8 (38%) of his passes. While he didn't help win the ball back either, losing all four of his attempted ground duels.

After the game, manager Howe told the BBC that his team needed to do better at both end of the pitch, saying: "Missed chances. The moments were there for us. We had a lot in the game. They didn't go in and we are hugely frustrated with that part of our game. We probably didn't defend as well as we have for the majority of the season, either. We were good without being at our very best."

It's fair to say, Wilson didn't really help much with that on the day.

Manchester United transfer update on Ansu Fati

Manchester United continue to be linked with a move for FC Barcelona forward Ansu Fati, however, there appears to be ‘little chance’ of a transfer this summer.

The Lowdown: Fati enquiry made

Fati has a release clause of €1bn (£875m) in his Camp Nou contract, with the 20-year-old contributing to nine goals in 38 appearances in all competitions this season.

He appears to be catching the eye of some clubs in England, including United, who were first linked with signing Fati two years ago after reports of a £134m offer from Old Trafford.

Reports back in February suggested that the Red Devils had already made an enquiry to his agent Jorge Mendes to ‘ask about the player’s situation’.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Writing for GiveMeSport, transfer insider Dean Jones said that United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United are all keen on the La Liga star. However, Jones added specifically on the Red Devils that ‘there is little chance of the move’.

‘United’s interest in Fati is indeed long-standing yet, at this moment, there is little chance of the move, sources say. Two years ago they would have run full steam into a deal like this, but times have changed and so have the identity of attacking priorities.’

Jones then said that ‘it is understood Fati does not have a desire himself to seek a move and he may indeed stay’, making any move to Old Trafford an ambitious one.

The Verdict: Striker a priority

Fati appears to be a huge talent, with Barcelona team-mate Eric Garcia labelling him as a player born with ‘magic’. However, the Spaniard is primarily a left-winger, a position of the pitch where Marcus Rashford has been excelling under Erik ten Hag in recent months, contributing to 20 goals in 23 games on the left-hand side.

United also have Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho as left-wing options, therefore, a big-money move for a centre-forward could be more beneficial at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial potentially on the way out in the summer.

Fati has played just 12 times as a centre-forward during his career, so looking elsewhere for a striker such as Victor Osimhen could be money better spent. The Napoli forward has been in fine form during the current campaign, netting twice on Sunday against Torino to take his tally to 25 goals in 29 games, so could be just what is needed at Old Trafford in the summer instead of bringing in another winger.

Liverpool: Gvardiol ‘not hot at this stage’

Liverpool completing a deal for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol is ‘not hot at this stage’, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The Lowdown: The story so far

Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester City, alongside the Reds, have all been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, who is making a name for himself in the Bundesliga.

90min report that Jurgen Klopp has already sent scouts to watch the Croatian in action, so that he and the hierarchy are able to maintain regular updates on his transfer situation.

Marco Rose’s centre-back has publicly made it known that he supported the Merseysiders growing up and would love to one day complete a move to Anfield.

The Latest: Plettenberg’s update

Taking to Twitter, Plettenberg revealed that Liverpool aren’t currently in talks to sign Gvardiol. He wrote:

“News #Gvardiol: As reported yesterday #LFC is interested! He’s on the list. It would be a great fitting. But I’ve been told that it’s not hot at this stage. No negotiations. Leipzig wants to keep him 100%. Release clause in summer 2024 (!) is around €110m.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-transfer-news-and-rumours/” title=”Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/cropped-2021-03-07T155652Z_1459311687_UP1EH3718ASBK_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LIV-FUL-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Splash the cash

Gvardiol’s release clause being £97m as of next year isn’t at all cheap for a centre-back, but Liverpool should splash the cash to secure his services whenever the opportunity presents itself.

The Zagreb native is currently averaging 2.5 tackles and 1.4 aerial wins per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga, via WhoScored, but can also be a threat in the final third.

The 6 foot 1 colossus has scored two goals in five Champions League appearances this season showing that he’s a danger at set pieces, much like Virgil Van Dijk.

Gvardiol will know what it takes to be successful having already won four trophies despite his young age, and he would only thrive further under the leadership of Klopp should he sign on the dotted line.

Man United scout Victor Osimhen

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United have sent scouts to follow Victor Osimhen recently ahead of a possible summer transfer.

What’s the latest on the Victor Osimhen and Man Utd links?

The Red Devils certainly seem to be having a good season as they keep themselves in a title race, aim for glory with a Carabao Cup final on the horizon, and beat Barcelona in the Europa League.

However, some fans may not be able to help but look at the striker position as a possible area that needs to be strengthened with loanee forward Wout Weghorst netting one goal in 11 since signing this January.

If goals are what they are after, then they may not be able to do much better than Napoli ace Osimhen who has 21 goals to his name in all competitions this season.

In exciting news, he seems to be the man United may be chasing this summer too. Indeed, while talking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained the latest information.

He said: “We can mention Victor Osimhen because Manchester United scouts were keeping an eye on the player in the Champions League game with Frankfurt and also in some Serie A games.

“So Manchester United are following the progress of this boy to understand if he’s worth the money that Napoli will ask in the future for Osimhen if they want to sell the player – we will see at the end of the season.”

What could the Osimhen transfer mean for Man Utd?

The Premier League club certainly may well feel as though Osimhen could be the perfect player to replace Cristiano Ronaldo who left in the winter.

After all, the Nigerian has scored 19 goals in 20 Serie A games this term, while also claiming four assists as Napoli look destined to win the league at a canter.

What’s more, if the scouts were watching Osimhen in his recent Champions League match against Frankfurt, they likely would have been impressed as he picked up a 7.7 Sofascore rating, scoring once, winning one penalty, winning both of his aerial duels and also making two clearances.

All in all, it’s not hard to see why they may have identified the forward as the ideal player to lead the line for Erik ten Hag.
