Cricinfo examines the decisions made in the Super Test courtesy of TV evidence – plus one that wasn’t

Australia 1st innings – resumed on 331 for 6Over 85.2 – Andrew Flintoff to Adam Gilchrist
The World XI needed early wickets to stop Australia progressing past 400 and Flintoff provided the perfect start with the second ball of the day. The delivery was full and swung back into Gilchrist, similar to his manner of dismissal in the last two Ashes Tests against the swing of Matthew Hoggard. It initially appeared plumb, and Darrell Hair confirmed the ball had pitched in line.
World XI 1st inningsOver 4.5 – Glenn McGrath to Graeme Smith
Like Flintoff, McGrath also swung the new ball and set Smith up with a series of away swingers which almost found the outside edge. McGrath then got one to straighten on Smith, who was late in getting his bat down after initially shaping to leave. On first viewing, the appeal looked very close but the TV replays showed the ball had struck the back leg and would have carried on over the stumps. Despite the TV evidence, McGrath still huffed and puffed his way down to fine leg at the end of the over.
Over 10.3 -McGrath to Brian Lara
Lara shuffled across his stumps and was struck in front of middle-and-off; the appeal looked very adjacent but Rudi Koertzen decided to use the TV to ascertain the height of the delivery. A couple of replays showed the ball was on target to hit the top of the stumps, although this is an example of a decision that could have been made much quicker. The longer a decision is scrutinised, the more doubt can be created – even when gut instinct is the correct decision.
Over 30.5 – Shane Warne to Inzamam-ul-Haq
The umpire’s judgment on what decisions to refer was certainly put to the test with the spinners in action, and Warne is not shy at appealing. His second ball to Inzamam clipped the front pad before hitting the bat – the type of appeal that the on-field umpire will rarely give out because of the doubt about which was hit (bat or pad) first. The TV replays confirmed it was pad first and Darrell Hair took a long time reaching his decision, suggesting it was a close call. Eventually he told Koertzen it was missing the off stump, although Warne was still far from convinced.
Over 31.2 – Stuart MacGill to Inzamam-ul-Haq
A conventional decision for Hair this time, as Inzamam raised his foot and Adam Gilchrist produced a smart stumping. Just as Inzamam had gained the benefit of the new use of technology in the previous over, it was the original style third umpire decision that did him in this time. Some you win, some you lose. Although MacGill would have benefited from this use of the third umpire under the standard rules, he is excited about the prospect of being able to use replays for other appeals. “A wrist spinner can get a lot of extra decisions by referring to the third umpire. I really want to see whether this works because I think we can benefit immensely from it.”
Over 38.5 – Warne to Mark Boucher
This decision proved that even with all the technology at the umpire’s disposal, you can’t achieve perfection – umpires will still act on their instincts – and mistakes are still going to be made. Boucher played and missed at a legbreak, brushing his pad with the bat. The Australians went up in unison and Koertzen gave him out. Boucher left swiftly but was far from happy.

Speaking with after his long-awaited return from a cruciate ligament injury, Bremer also addressed the controversy surrounding team-mate Douglas Luiz, who failed to report to the first day of pre-season training. WHAT BREMER SAID

When asked about the recent trend of high-profile veterans moving to Serie A, such as Luka Modric to Milan and Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli, Bremer was quick to back the idea of Neymar joining Juve for his own “last dance”: “Of course. It would be great to have someone like Ney here at Juve.”

The defender was also asked about fellow Brazilian Luiz, who stirred controversy by skipping Juventus’ first day of pre-season training in what was reported as an unauthorised absence. Bremer confirmed the midfielder has since addressed the issue internally: “Douglas made his choice, the important thing is that he came back and apologized to the club, the coach and us teammates. Now he's here and he's working well.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neymar was recently linked with a surprise move to Marseille, but the French side are not the only team who will be interested should the Brazilian icon look for another transfer with his eye on the World Cup, and Bremer believes Juve should be an option. Meanwhile, Luiz’s turbulent stint in Turin seems to be nearing its end, his unauthorised absence appears to have sealed his Juventus fate. He is widely expected to be sold in the current transfer window, with Premier League clubs already circling.

Women's Hundred to receive £800,000 salary boost from ECB

Top-tier salaries to be worth £50,000 in 2024, but men’s pay to be frozen as gender gap closes

The ECB will invest an additional £800,000 in wages for the women’s Hundred in 2024 in a bid to attract the world’s best overseas players and to close the tournament’s gender pay gap, with men’s salaries frozen for the third straight season.ESPNcricinfo understands that the salary cap will increase by 40% for each of the eight women’s squads, from £250,000 to £350,000, with the top three salary bands increasing by 60%. That means that the two highest earners in each squad will earn £50,000, up from £31,250 in 2023 and £15,000 in 2021.Salaries in the women’s Hundred still pale in comparison to those on offer in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India, where Smriti Mandhana is the leading earner on INR 3.4 crore (£320,000). But the ECB hope that the increase will attract the world’s best players in 2024, after some leading Australians – including Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath opted out of the Hundred last summer. The Women’s Future Tours Programme is clear for all full-member teams apart from Ireland and Sri Lanka during the Hundred’s window this year. With the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup due to take place in September-October, overseas players may see the Hundred as an opportunity to prepare for those international tournaments. The investment in player wages will also make a dent in the Hundred’s gender pay gap, with women’s players now paid on average 35% of their male counterparts, compared to 25% in 2023. The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report into English cricket last summer called for equal pay in the Hundred by 2025, though the ECB have not committed to that recommendation.Salaries in the men’s Hundred are due to stay at the same level as 2023, with a top salary band of £125,000 and a salary cap of £1 million per squad. The tournament struggled to attract star names last summer and the top wage bracket remains significantly below those on offer in Major League Cricket (MLC).Related

ECB seek decision on private investment in Hundred by spring 2024

Buttler backs the Hundred as 'huge part' of English cricket's future

The Hundred will run from late July to late August in 2024 and the early stages will clash with both England men’s third Test against West Indies and the final week of MLC. With the men’s T20 World Cup staged in the Caribbean and the United States in June, Hundred teams fear that many overseas players will stay in the region for MLC.The ECB has been consulting with counties over the future of the Hundred since the end of last season and there is a growing consensus that the tournament will be expanded to nine or ten teams in 2025. Under one proposal, counties would be gifted equity stakes in the Hundred teams that play at their venues, which could then be sold to private investors.Jos Buttler, England men’s white-ball captain, implored the ECB to turn the Hundred into “the second-best domestic tournament in the world” behind the IPL last year and MLC’s emergence as a lucrative, Indian-backed competition during the English summer has heightened the sense that the Hundred requires further investment.Nevertheless, the investment in women’s salaries, over the men’s, underlines the sense that the tournament’s dual-gender format has been integral to its success to date, and that further closing the pay gap is a priority. The Hundred will retain its double-header format in 2024, with men’s and women’s fixtures played back-to-back at the same venues.Teams will soon begin to make retention offers to players they wish to keep for this season from their 2023 squads, with the men’s and women’s drafts expected to take place in March. Fixtures will be published next week, with the knockout stages again played at The Oval (eliminators) and Lord’s (finals).

Sean Abbott stuns Kent – and himself – with 34-ball hundred

Allrounder eclipses previous best by 69 runs as Surrey run out comfortable winners

David Hopps26-May-2023Sean Abbott’s first thought about a glorious night he could never have envisaged was that he is no Andrew Symonds with the bat. That made his intervention at the Kia Oval all the more remarkable. He now shares with Symonds the joint-fastest T20 hundred ever made in England and the fourth fastest in T20 history after his 34-ball romp for Surrey in front of 17,000 spectators. He is no mean cricketer, but he just kept smiling at the absurdity of it all.Kent had been pleasantly stunned by Symonds’ hundred in their colours that night in Maidstone back in 2004 as the potential of T20 began to dawn. This time they were the fall guys, their control of Surrey’s top-order abruptly surrendered to one of those nights when a recognised lower-order batter simply discovers a power within themselves that has never previously been witnessed.Nigh-on two decades have followed since Symonds’ revelation of T20’s potential. Then the game invited scepticism and suspicion even in the country that had been daring and forward-thinking enough to present it to the world. As Abbott underlined once more, it has since become a game where anything is possible.”I don’t think people should be thinking about me and ‘Roy’ in the same breath,” Abbott said, moments after his unbeaten 110 from 41 balls with four fours and 11 sixes (all but one between long on and deep square) became just the latest tale of the unexpected. “But it was a lot of fun. Batting records could not be further from my radar. I was just grateful to find the middle of the bat.”He found it so often on his debut T20 appearance at Kia Oval that he now stands only four balls adrift of Chris Gayle’s all-time record. He achieved the feat in the penultimate over with a muscular, short-arm shovel down the ground against his fellow Australian, the veteran seamer Michael Hogan. This from a seam bowler whose average in T20 was 10.91, who had never made more than 41 in 76 previous innings in this format, and who made only 51 runs as an afterthought in Sydney Sixers’ 2022-23 Big Bash campaign.Nobody doubts that he can bat – he has made good runs for Surrey in the Championship this season and has a first-class average of 22 – but this was only the second hundred of his professional career. Inspiration fell upon him. If his maiden half-century brought professional satisfaction, the realisation that he might actually make a hundred became a bit of a lark.It was Kent Day, the Feast of St Augustine, which celebrates the patron saint of Kent and first Archbishop of Canterbury. But this time the chomping was left to Abbott, whose saintly qualities are not even known in Windsor, New South Wales. He came in with Surrey 64 for 4 in 8.2 tentative overs. Sam Curran had just departed to a bit of catching practice at mid-off and the pitch cried out for somebody who would just give it a slug. Thanks to Surrey’s uncommon reliance on a bowler-heavy side, Abbott had that opportunity. He said later that he just didn’t want to use up too many balls. With six overs remaining, Surrey were 118 for 5, Abbott on 28 from 17, and there was talk of how 170 would surpass Kia Oval’s par score. But Surrey added 105 in the last five overs. First Kent’s bowling fell apart then their fielding followed. They began like the side that finished top of South Group in 2021 and finished like the side that ended up bottom a year later.Abbott first took a liking to the left-arm spin of George Linde – too short, six; too full, another six. He might have holed out during that over on 47, but Joey Evison, who had watched those two balls sail many miles over his head, could not make ground at long-off to the mishit.Kane Richardson, another Australian in the firing line, then went for 30 (6-4-6-4-4-6) on the 18th over. Richardson opted for wide yorkers, but never nailed them, and Abbott, by now discovering his full repertoire, mixed delicate steers and extra-cover drives with lean-back heaves into a warm South London sky. When one of those heaves malfunctioned against Evison, Linde, who had a bad night, leaned forward to fumble a sitter. With the century achieved against Hogan, there was time for laughter, too, in the crowd as Richardson and Jack Leaning combined to pat-a-cake another blow into the boundary boards. It was all a far cry from the impressive way Kent had started, exemplified by a brilliant run out of Tom Curran by Jordan Cox at mid off.It was good to see Sam Curran back in Surrey’s side, batting at three and captain, too, so soon after an IPL season in which he had been charged with living up to a record £1.85m price tag. “A season of many ups and downs, lots to learn from and come back stronger,” he had tweeted. He can relax into a tournament where IPL price tags are rarely a staple of crowd conversation.Another of Surrey’s IPL contingent, Jason Roy, was again absent with a minor calf injury, quite a coincidence after a fraught and highly-publicised week in which he abandoned his England incremental contract to sign for the MLC’s inaugural tournament in the United States. The suggestion remains that he will see out Surrey’s Blast season, and will miss the start of the MLC tournment if they reach the final stages, but cricket is in flux, Roy is one of the players at the centre of it, and nothing can be assumed to be set in stone. In the meantime, Surrey’s medical team will see rather more of him than Surrey supporters which is a common state of affairs that county cricket is finding increasingly hard to live with.It was hard therefore not to recall the words of Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket – and seemingly a contender to replace the late Mystic Meg – who remarked a week or so earlier about top English players attached to counties: “They go away and play elsewhere and when they come back they want time in the indoor school with the best coaches just to get ready to go off and play in another franchise competition. ‘Oh and by the way I’ve got a little calf injury so can I get treated by the physio, the doctor, the medical staff and can I get rehab as well?’ “Sunil Narine stood in as opener during Surrey’s victory against Middlesex at Lord’s 24 hours earlier – a match when Abbott was not one of the eight batters who reached the crease. This time Surrey promoted Laurie Evans and opted for make-do-and-mend with Abbott at No. 6. It all went rather well. When Symonds made that format-defining hundred, Kent’s coach, Matt Walker, had watched with wonder from the non-striker’s end. This time he was about 100 metres away and could be forgiven if he did not find things quite as uplifting.Kent made a spirited start with the bat as Daniel Bell-Drummond and Tawande Muyeye repeatedly peppered the boundary to reach 75 in the powerplay. Both reached half-centuries – Muyeye’s first – but after Sunil Narine had Bell-Drummond caught in the deep, Kent crumbled. The last over was left to Abbott, the game won, his face full of smiles, but no wicket to add the final touch to his evening.

Gakpo managed 18 goals in all competitions as Liverpool's primary option on the left flank in 2024-25. But he still only started 23 of a possible 38 Premier League games and Bayern are in the market for additional attacking firepower after showing interest in Florian Wirtz and letting Thomas Muller leave. Gakpo, who kept himself busy between the club season ending and international duty with trips to Paris for the French Open and London for the F1 movie premiere, is versatile enough that he can operate either wide or centrally.

Cruise went on to praise Beckham and believes that the former English international changed the face of football in America with his groundbreaking move to join MLS as a player with the LA Galaxy in 2007. “You changed the face of the sport in America and for the world, all for the better,” Cruise told CBS Sports. “You single-handedly changed it and enabled others, and the success of that league and where it is today, it started with you, it absolutely did. Your jersey was selling, all the players got more awareness, everybody did, and a rising tide raises all boats, and look where you are now."

He added, “Once David went and he made it OK, and you also won two Championships there, and everywhere you went, you won, everywhere! That was amazing, it was a great time for the sport and how it’s evolved. And now you’re taking it as an owner, with [Lionel] Messi playing for Miami, what you’ve done there with you guys, again taking it to that next level, and that is inspiring.
