Cameron Bancroft marked his first appearance as Gloucestershire captain with a century to lead his side to a formidable 368 for 3 on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Second Division game with Glamorgan at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol. The 32-year-old Australian hit 163, off 267 balls, with 19 fours and two sixes, sharing a second-wicket stand of 230 with Ollie Price, who contributed a patient 101, as the visitors were made to rue their decision to bowl first under cloudless skies. The only wicket-takers were Ned Leonard, who struck twice, and Shoaib Bashir, although Zain ul Hassan and Timm van der Gugten were commendably economical as spectators basked in warm sunshine.Bancroft, who only flew into the country to start his third spell as a Gloucestershire player on Wednesday, rode his luck somewhat in the morning session when the Glamorgan seamers bowled without much fortune. On 2, he survived a huge appeal for a catch behind off Asitha Fernando and, having moved to 33, edged the same bowler fractionally short of the diving Kiran Carlson at third slip. A greater escape came on 48 when wicketkeeper Chris Cooke failed to hold a difficult one-handed chance wide to his right off ul Hassan. Those moments apart, Bancroft relished the unseasonable weather, producing an array of sweetly timed shots. He and Ben Charlesworth gave Gloucestershire a solid start with a stand of 62 before Charlesworth, on 19, aimed a big drive at Leonard and nicked through to Cooke. It was Glamorgan’s only success of the morning session as Bancroft went to fifty with a back-foot punch through the off side off ul Hassan to collect his eighth four and Price provided careful support in taking the score to 100 for 1 off 27 overs at lunch.Glamorgan turned to off-spinner Bashir in the afternoon session, but Bancroft greeted him with a glorious square-driven boundary and later a straight six as the England player’s first four overs went for 30 runs.Price had contributed 28 when the century stand with Bancroft was brought up. His partner moved to 99 with two fours through the off side off van der Gugten and two overs later a scampered single off Leonard took him to a 31st first-class ton off 166 balls, with 13 fours and a six. The innings had also taken Bancroft past 11,000 first-class runs. When Leonard opted to bowl short with six fielders on the leg side, the Aussie top-edged a pull for his second six, then made room for a four through the covers. All the while Price was accumulating steadily before reaching a half-century off 140 balls, with seven fours. It was 225 for 1 at tea, with Bancroft on 119 and Price 57. It was the latter who pressed the accelerator with a flurry of boundaries at the start of the final session to move into the nineties. The 23-year-old then cracked successive fours off Bashir to move to his fifth first-class hundred off 220 balls, with 15 boundaries. Two balls later he lost concentration and was pinned lbw on the back foot to make the score 292 for 2 with the second new ball about to become due.It was taken immediately, but did little to dampen Gloucestershire’s day as Bancroft and Miles Hammond batted positively, Hammond cracking five fours in no time to ensure there was no respite for the tiring Glamorgan bowlers.Bancroft progressed to 150 off 259 balls, having extended his boundary count to 16 fours and two sixes, before a tired looking waft at a wide ball from Leonard saw him caught behind. His innings had occupied six hours and 26 minutes. Hammond was unbeaten on 37 at the close of a largely one-sided day.

Worth more than Hincapie: Arsenal have struck gold on "incredible" talent

Arsenal have had a massive transfer window this summer, with the hierarchy backing Mikel Arteta to make the additions he craves to help his quest for Premier League glory.

The Gunners have already splashed over £200m on new additions, solving various issues within countless areas of the first-team squad at the Emirates.

Striker Viktor Gyokeres was signed in a £63m deal from Sporting CP, already making an immediate impact after meeting twice in the 5-0 victory over Leeds United in North London.

Martin Zubimendi has also been signed to help bolster the defensive midfield department, aiding Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard to lock down starting roles in such an area.

However, the backline has now been the latest part of the side to be subject to investment, with a move now edging ever closer to landing another big-money addition.

Arsenal’s deal to land Piero Hincapie this summer

Over the last couple of days, Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie – with the defender edging closer to a move to join Arteta’s side.

The Gunners were battling North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for his signature, but it appears they have won the race – just as they did with Eberechi Eze.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

A deal for the 23-year-old to join the side on loan for the 2025/26 campaign has been agreed, with a package totalling £45m including a loan fee in place with the Bundesliga outfit.

The Ecuadorian international can operate in a full-back or centre-back role, with such a move adding needed depth and quality, asJakub Kiwior looks set to join Porto as a result.

However, despite the latest big-money transfer from Arteta, it’s his previous business that has worked wonders – leading to one player’s price tag soaring over recent months.

The Arsenal player who’s worth more than Hincapie

Despite finishing as runners-up in the Premier League in each of the last three years, Arsenal have made phenomenal progress under the guidance of Arteta.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

The Spaniard will mark six years in the role in December, taking charge when the side were lingering in mid-table and going nowhere under Unai Emery.

William Saliba and Gabriel have both nailed down starting roles at the heart of the defence, joining from Saint-Étienne and Lille respectively – helping the club boast an incredible defensive record.

The Gunners have now had the best defensive record in England’s top-flight in each of the last two seasons – with the duo undoubtedly a key reason to achieving such a remarkable feat.

However, Jurrien Timber is another player who has also helped the side reach the levels they have over recent seasons – impressing massively since his move from Ajax back in the summer of 2023.

Arsenal's JurrienTimbercelebrates after the match

He missed the vast majority of his debut campaign due to an ACL injury suffered on the opening day, but he’s worked his way back into the side – now being Arteta’s starting right-back.

The Dutchman, who’s been labelled “incredible” by boss Arteta, has since racked up 53 appearances for the side, having a huge impact at both ends of the pitch.

The 24-year-old managed to score a double in the win over Arsenal last Saturday, taking his tally in the red shirt to four – an average of one goal every 13 matches.

As a result of his displays in North London, Timber is now valued at £47.6m by Transfermarkt – an increase of 40% of the £34m fee forked out for his signature two years ago.

His subsequent value is also higher than the £45m fee forked out for Hincapie’s signature, with the club and pending new arrival hoping he can follow in a similar vein upon his switch to England.

The club have constantly conducted excellent business in the transfer market over recent seasons, with Timber one of the latest examples to thrive under the manager’s guidance.

If the hierarchy can keep producing similar profile additions going forward, there’s no reason why the club can’t finally end their two-decade wait for a Premier League title.

Arsenal could sign a bigger talent than Eze & Simons in £80m "machine"

Having snapped up Eberechi Eze, Arsenal’s £80m target would be a game-changing signing and better than Xavi Simons.

Forget Eze: Spurs preparing move for "unstoppable" star who's like Rodrygo

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been voicing their displeasure over the last couple of days, and understandably so, given the failure to complete a deal for Eberechi Eze.

After James Maddison’s ACL injury during pre-season, the Lilywhites entered talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for the England international, leading to a £60m price tag being mooted.

The move appeared to be at an advanced stage, leading to the player himself approving of a switch to join Thomas Frank’s side ahead of the September 1st deadline.

However, a deal has since evaporated, with North London rivals Arsenal taking advantage of their inability to close the deal, with the 27-year-old set to be announced as a Gunner in the coming days.

Missing out on the Englishman’s signature has been a huge blow to Frank’s plans for the ongoing Premier League campaign, which must see the board go back into the market and land an alternative option.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzereacts

Spurs targeting moves for Eze alternatives

Como star Nico Paz has been one name mentioned with a potential move to join Spurs this summer, but any deal could be an expensive one for Daniel Levy.

The Serie A side are currently demanding a fee in the region of £60m for the 20-year-old’s signature this summer, with Real Madrid due a hefty sell-on in any transfer.

However, he’s not the only player currently in their sights, with Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku a player they’re also considering, according to TEAMtalk.

Their report claims that the Blues are desperately wanting to offload the Frenchman, who cost £52m back in the summer of 2023 – with the Lilywhites one of the sides interested in a move for his signature.

It also states that Frank’s side are firmly in the race to land the 27-year-old, but it’s unclear whether the player would be open to a move across London before the end of the window.

Why Spurs’ latest target is just like Rodrygo

In previous months, Spurs have been hugely linked with a move for Real Madrid star Rodrygo, in an attempt to replace Heung-min Son after his departure to join LAFC.

The Brazilian has also been on the radar of the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool this summer, after it was confirmed he was free to depart the LaLiga giants during the current window.

However, any deal would cost a fee in the region of €100m (£86m) – a figure that could prove to be slightly out of the Lilywhites’ price range, given the money spent elsewhere this summer.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo looks on

Noise over a potential move to North London for the 24-year-old has lessened in recent weeks as a result of his asking price, which has seen the hierarchy move on to other targets.

Nkunku is just one of the names mentioned as a result, with the former RB Leipzig star able to operate in a number ten, centre forward or wide left role.

There’s no doubt the links to the Chelsea star may appear underwhelming given his lack of impact at Stamford Bridge – but his underlying figures showcase he still possesses a lot of quality.

He’s been labelled as a similar player to Rodrygo by FBref, even managing to match or better the Brazilian in key areas when comparing their respective figures from 2024/25.

Nkunku, who’s been labelled “unstoppable” by one writer, matched the Madrid star for goals and assists per 90, whilst also achieving a better shot on target accuracy rate – offering Frank’s side a more clinical option in the final third.

He also completed more of the passes he attempted, whilst also registering more key passes per 90 – handing the Lilywhites the creative presence they will lack after Maddison’s injury setback.

Nkunku may not be high up on the club’s list this summer, but he could offer a cost-effective option in an attempt to improve the options currently at Frank’s disposal.

If he can replicate such numbers in North London next campaign, it would be a shrewd piece of business, offering a cheaper alternative to Brazilian superstar Rodrygo.

Jack Grealish backed for England recall by Three Lions legend after Man City flop's flying start to life on loan at Everton

Jack Grealish has been backed for an England recall by Michael Owen following his flying start to life on loan at Everton. The 30-year-old has been nothing short of sensational since swapping Manchester City for a season-long loan move to the newly-built Hill Dickinson Stadium and Owen believes this change of scenery is exactly what the star needed.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Grealish revitalised under Moyes

It’s been a summer of rejuvenation for Grealish, whose disappointing stint at City now feels like a distant memory. This season, he’s been involved in some of the most thrilling moments for Everton, including a 92nd-minute winner against Crystal Palace, a goal that not only sealed a famous 2-1 win but also ended Palace’s unbeaten run in the Premier League.

  • A new star for the blue half of Merseyside

Grealish’s arrival at Everton wasn’t just about making up the numbers; it was about becoming the club’s driving force, and he’s done exactly that. With four assists in his first two starts, he quickly became the club’s top creator, and now, with a match-winning goal under his belt, he’s become the fan favourite at Everton’s brand-new riverside arena. The Toffees have yet to lose in their four matches there, and it’s no coincidence that Grealish’s influence on the pitch is quickly transforming them into a European spot contender.

England snub: Will Tuchel come knocking?

Despite his electrifying form, Grealish was left out of the latest England squad by manager Thomas Tuchel. It was a snub that raised eyebrows, especially considering his explosive start to the season. However, the Everton loanee has revealed he had a conversation with Tuchel, explaining his determination to continue performing and force his way back into the national set-up.

  • Owen: Grealish can fit right back into England’s plans

For former England striker Michael Owen, Grealish’s return to form at Everton is a signal that a comeback to the England fold should be on the horizon. In an interview with, Owen stated: "It’s been a great move for Jack. I think it has suited him more. He is quite a unique type of player. He likes carrying the ball, he wins a lot of free kicks. I really like him. I think he’s a great guy and I’ve been very supportive of him. I’d always said I don’t really think his style of play suited Manchester City. Obviously, Everton have got themselves a great player who could continue to be very effective for them.

"He’s a ball carrier, he takes a lot of touches, he wins a lot of free kicks. For a team that wants to be getting their big men forward, and being dangerous on set pieces, that actually works. A Jack Grealish carrying the ball 40 yards, winning a free kick, running at players and dribbling past them, it works."

Four England stars Thomas Tuchel could rescue after Southgate struggles

Jordan Henderson’s call-up should have been a fairly quick indication that Thomas Tuchel is ready to hand out second chances in the England set-up before the World Cup. The former Chelsea boss is leading a new era and one which has already featured plenty of old faces as well as some fresh arrivals.

The latest to benefit from that is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Prior to the arrival of Tuchel, the midfield star hadn’t been called up for England duty since 2018. That was as many as seven years ago now, but he’s seemingly done enough at AC Milan to earn another chance to impress for the Three Lions and make a claim for a World Cup place.

It feels unlikely that he’ll be the final shock inclusion under Tuchel, who has left England fans guessing at every turn. But who could be next to receive a much-welcomed return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup?

4 Fikayo Tomori AC Milan

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

Fikayo Tomori was always one that was overlooked by Gareth Southgate and mainly for reasons unknown. He played for one of Europe’s most historic clubs and, last season aside, started almost every week for AC Milan. Yet, it still wasn’t enough for Southgate, who chose to keep his selection in the Premier League for the most part.

Things are changing under Tuchel, however, and Tomori could be the next former Chelsea star back in the squad after Loftus-Cheek. The central defender’s last call-up came in 2019, but after earning his way back into Milan’s starting side, he deserves to get his place back in the Three Lions set-up at long last.

Tuchel has already shown willingness to call players outside the Premier League with the inclusion of AC Milan’s Loftus-Cheek alongside Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford, and should now turn towards Tomori.

3 Jack Grealish Everton

It almost seems inevitable that Jack Grealish will get his England chance before the World Cup. The winger has so far been reborn under David Moyes at Everton – assisting four goals in just two games – and provides a different threat to the quicker, more direct wingers who already have a place under Tuchel.

Grealish was beginning to fall out of love with football at Manchester City. He was refined to a cameo role more often than not, if that, and desperately needed the move that Everton soon granted him.

With the World Cup around nine months away, the Toffees have so far unlocked the version of Grealish that the Premier League last saw at Aston Villa. He is the star of the show at the Hill Dickinson and is well on course to earn back the England place that he lost in 2023.

2 Jadon Sancho Aston Villa

It goes without saying that Jadon Sancho still has a long way to go. He struggled on loan at Chelsea last season, so much so that they paid to get out of their obligation to buy the winger from Manchester United, and has shown all the signs of a player lacking the desire that he once had. But a lot can change in football.

It wasn’t so long ago that Sancho was the talk of European football, and he wasn’t the first player to struggle in a Manchester United shirt after a big-money move. A loan spell back to Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 campaign proved that he is still a player full of talent, but that talent must be on show at Aston Villa.

Rashford rediscovered his best form under Unai Emery in a similar move last season. Now, he has his England place back and is a Barcelona player. Sancho must use that example and get back to the type of form that would hand the Three Lions a major boost next summer.

1 Phil Foden Man City

Recent injuries haven’t helped, but there’s no denying that Phil Foden is very much on the peripheral of Pep Guardiola’s current plans. The 25-year-old hasn’t started any of Manchester City’s opening three games and is in danger of taking up the role that Grealish just vacated at the Etihad.

From becoming the Premier League’s Player of the Year in 23/24, the midfielder has now lost his England place and faces a fight to win it back before the World Cup gets underway.

It would be Tuchel’s biggest call to leave Foden out of his side. The Man City man is one of the most talented players that the Three Lions have, but things need to change at the Etihad. His first task is to get back into Guardiola’s Man City side, who have lost two of their three opening games, and then prove why he should be starting every week.

When that comes, then he should naturally find a way back into Tuchel’s plans. For now, however, the England boss has simply thrown down the challenge for Foden to get back to his best.

'Not good' – Hansi Flick provides worrying update on Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal's injury and availability for upcoming El Clasico

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick provided a worrying update on wonderkid Lamine Yamal's injury as he could not guarantee that the teenager would feature against Real Madrid in the season's first El Clasico later this month. Yamal suffered a relapse of his groin injury while featuring in Barca's Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week.

Barca hit by Yamal injury crisis

After featuring for Spain in the September international break, Yamal missed three weeks of club football due to a groin problem. He returned to action against Real Sociedad in La Liga, where he appeared in the second half and then played the full 90 minutes against PSG in the Champions League. However, following the European clash, Yamal felt discomfort in his pubic area once again and now the club has confirmed he will miss the next 2-3 weeks of action.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesFlick provides worrying update

Flick was quizzed on Yamal's fitness at a pre-match press conference on Saturday and feels that Yamal could be set for even longer on the sidelines. Speaking to reporters, the German coach said: "I spoke with him today, it's better but it's not good. This is the situation with Lamine. With this injury, it's not so easy to know [when he will return]. It's not easy to say 'OK he can play in two, three or four weeks…' or if he's able to play the Clásico. This is not possible. We have to wait. We must manage his load. He trains with the recovery team and [spend] the next weeks with them. We go step by step. We have to see how the evolution is."

Flick defends his criticism of Spain boss Luis de la Fuente

After Yamal picked up the injury on national duty, Flick accused Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente of "not taking care" of the teenager. The German manager has now defended his earlier comment by saying: "I want to protect my player, support him, this is what it is. A lot of things happened. This is, for me, done. I have no bad things about this situation. I know it from the other side. It's not easy for me. It's not easy for [De la Fuente]. I must protect my player; this is the reason I made it a little louder than normally I want to do it. I don't regret this. "Now, the important thing is managing this together. The players, the clubs and the Spanish Federation [RFEF]. We have to manage it together."

Yamal won't be linking up with the Spain national team for their World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria later this month. He will also miss Barcelona's upcoming clashes against Sevilla, Girona and Olympiacos. It now remains to be seen if the winger will fully recover in the next three weeks and take the field against Los Blancos.

Ex-Daniel Levy employee says Tottenham could sign England star for £45m

The Lewis family have been tipped to pump more money into Tottenham, following the shock departure of ex-chairman Daniel Levy last week, and these funds could be put towards their recruitment plans.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol, who shared news on a live broadcast that ENIC are planning a cash injection.

Levy helped to transform the Lilywhites into one of world football’s highest-revenue generating clubs over his 24-year tenure running the club, with Tottenham also moving to their state-of-the-art new stadium to seriously bolster their commercial appeal off the field.

However, Levy attracted criticism for a perceived lack of transfer spending compared to Spurs’ Premier League rivals, and this was undoubtedly a factor in them winning just two major trophies since 2001.

Thomas Frank could now be backed by the ENIC and the Lewis family as CEO Vinai Vinkatesham, who is set for a more hands-on role after Levy’s departure, aims to deliver more success.

Tottenham signed an array of star players during the last window under Levy, with Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani chief among them.

The latter two are poised to make their Premier League debuts against West Ham in a crunch London derby clash this weekend, and according to ex-Levy employee Bryan King, ex-Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher could be a target to watch out for in this post-Levy era.

Tottenham tipped to sign Conor Gallagher in £45 million deal

They’ll have to wait until January, but King believes that Tottenham signing Gallagher from Atlético Madrid is a very realistic proposition.

As uncertainty continues to surround Yves Bissouma’s future, Gallagher could come as an excellent replacement for the Mali international who has fallen out of favour with Frank.

The England international can play as an attacking midfielder when required, known for his excellent ball-winning ability, energy and tenacity in the middle of the park, and would help to fill Tottenham’s ‘locally trained’ quota for European competitions.

The only caveat is whether Gallagher, given his Chelsea roots, would want to swap Diego Simeone’s side for an ex-rival.

If he decides that is worth the move back to London, Frank would undoubtedly be securing a real asset, and one who Moises Caicedo has called a “machine”.
