Deol 70*, Meghna three-for lift Giants to No. 2

Gujarat Giants’ batting might trumped an all-international Delhi Capitals bowling attack and made up for their own sloppy fielding to clinch a thriller and take a step closer to their maiden playoffs berth. In a stiff chase of 178, Beth Mooney, Harleen Deol and Deandra Dottin came together to pull off a stunning effort by ransacking 103 runs in the last 10 overs that helped them to a five-wicket win with three balls to spare.By taking down the table-toppers who are already in the playoffs, Giants overtook Mumbai Indians to go second on the points table with a better NRR, although MI still have two games in hand compared to Giants’ one. Giants’ win also meant it was the end of the road for UP Warriorz, who can’t make it to the playoffs anymore. Giants and MI will now face-off in a crucial penultimate league game on March 10 in Mumbai. The Giants chase was set up by a steady 44 from Mooney, a wonderfully-paced and unbeaten 70 off 49 from Deol and a power-packed 24 off 10 from Dottin before Kashvee Gautam stole the show when they needed 13 from seven. The combined effort put in vain a classy 92 from 57 from Meg Lanning that was studded with 15 fours after she was gifted two lives by Giants.

Mooney and Deol lay the base

Giants are not known for their power-hitters at the top of the order and they didn’t change their template even in a steep chase. They were 15 for 1 after four overs as Mooney and Deol aimed to stay steady after the early loss of D Hemalatha, whose wretched run of form continued.Mooney went over the infield consistently to collect boundaries and it was the fifth over that kicked things off for Giants. Deol got going with two fours in a 13-run over and repeated the feat in the next over when she used the pace of Annabel Sutherland to push the run rate past six as the powerplay ended.Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol were top scorers for Gujarat Giants•BCCI

With the asking rate at an exact ten, Giants had a mountain to climb. Mooney made Deol run hard between the wickets and when the duo collected four fours in the space of seven balls just before the halfway mark, the chase was truly alive.Capitals had their forgettable moment of fielding too when Deol, on 27, lofted Jess Jonassen down the ground and Shafali went to her right from long-off but the ball burst through her hands and let go of a chance that potentially cost them the match.

The big hits from the big names

Giants were handed a big blow when Mooney found Sutherland at long-off off Minnu Mani in the 12th over, but that meant Capitals had to try and constrain Giants’ big hitters now. And they couldn’t. Gardner got off the mark with a four before smashing a glorious straight six off Marizanne Kapp that brought the equation down to 73 off 43 which soon became 66 off 36.Deol then got a second life, on 45, when Sutherland failed to hold on to a return catch. Gardner unleashed another six, this time off a Sutherland slower ball over midwicket. Deol brought up her first WPL fifty since 2023, off 38 balls, with a boundary to point; and even though Gardner holed out for 22, Dottin and Deol smashed back-to-back sixes to make it 36 off 23. The Capitals quicks took pace off the ball, brought Jonassen back but nothing helped. Dottin smoked Jonassen for 4, 6 and 4 to different parts of the leg-side boundary that shrunk the equation to 16 off 14.Capitals thought they had a chance when Jonassen finished the over with the wickets of Dottin and Phoebe Litchfield, before Shikha Pandey gave away just two off five balls of the 19th over, but Gautam dispatched a length ball over wide long-on. Deol followed it with a four before Gautam hit the winning runs.

Another Lanning and Shafali half-century stand

Lanning and Shafali were living dangerously right from the start. If Lanning’s first scoring stroke was a thick edge off an outswinger for four in the first over, Shafali’s straight loft in the next over just beat a sprinting mid-on to fetch her a boundary too. Lanning took off after that, and even though Shafali didn’t, they brought up their 12th half-century stand in the WPL, easily the most by any pair and for any wicket.Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning added 83 off 54 balls•BCCI

Lanning continued to pepper the boundaries on either side off the front foot as Giants continued to pitch the ball up. Shafali got a life on 15 when Tanuja Kanwar couldn’t hold on to a return catch in the sixth over despite a full-length dive. She looked a lot more confident with two sixes after the powerplay but holed out for 40 off 37 to deep midwicket where Phoebe Litchfield completed a well-judged catch.

Another Lanning masterclass

Lanning, meanwhile, struck seven fours in the powerplay and continued to punish Giants for their lapses. There was action at the other end too – Shafali’s wicket was followed by Jonassen’s when she missed a swinging yorker from Dottin, soon after the batter had survived a stumping chance.Just before that, Giants had also given Lanning a life when Deol almost clung to a juggling attempt after a perfectly-timed leap at mid-off at the start of the 12th over. Deol leapt straight up to intercept the ball with her right hand, attempted a left-handed grab and then even caught the ball with both hands while rotating but the ball popped out when she landed on her elbows. And as the cliché goes, Lanning rubbed salt on the wounds with a glorious inside-out six over the covers for her 34-ball fifty.Giants’ sloppiness wasn’t done for the day though. Soon after Jemimah Rodrigues fell for 4, Lanning could have been run-out on 63 when a mix-up with Sutherland meant Lanning was terribly late on reaching the bowler’s end. But a wayward throw combined with Priya Mishra’s failed attempt to collect the ball extended Lanning’s stay. She next punished Kanwar for two fours in the 18th over and Dottin for another pair of boundaries in the last over. Lanning was on 92 with two balls left in the innings but missed out on becoming the WPL’s first ever centurion as she was bowled by a Dottin legcutter. Sarah Bryce carved the last ball for a six that gave Capitals a total that was strong but not enough.

Paul Pogba 'getting closer' to Monaco debut as coach Adi Hutter delivers promising update on French midfielder's fitness

Monaco coach Adi Hutter believes Paul Pogba is getting closer to full fitness and is progressing well with the training regimen put in place. The Austrian coach reported that Pogba is doing well both physically and mentally, but he will not rush him into the squad merely to bolster numbers, despite the club facing an injury crisis.

  • Pogba's move to Monaco and his physical condition

Pogba last played a competitive game in September 2023 as a Juventus player and joined Monaco in the summer of 2025 after his doping ban was lifted. The World Cup winner has been training with the club since July, but Monaco coach Hutter confirmed at the start of the season that both Pogba and Ansu Fati were far from match fitness and not ready for playing time.

However, a spate of injuries in midfield, including captain Dennis Zakaria, could prompt Hutter to accelerate Pogba’s integration. The coach believes that with his current progress, Pogba should be ready to feature after the October break.

  • Hutter's update

In the pre-match press conference, Hutter addressed Pogba’s condition, saying: “We can't compare Paul Pogba's situation [with Ansu Fati's]. Fati is much younger than Paul. Ansu has been training for a long time. Today, Paul is being used more and more.” He added: “We're in our process. We've given ourselves three months. He's getting closer to the group. He's physically and mentally well.”

However, Hutter emphasised that he does not want to rush Pogba’s integration into the squad due to his injury history, explaining: “It's a consideration. With the injured, we have a look at that, but it makes no sense to bring someone in just to say we have someone.”

    Fati's hilarious incident with Pogba

Introduced as a substitute in Monaco’s league match against Metz, Fati scored within a minute of coming on before adding a second later in the game. After the match, Pogba met him in the tunnel and, in a lighthearted exchange, told Fati he had predicted both his introduction and two goals, prompting Fati to call Pogba a wizard.

Quem é Leo Fernández, provável reforço do Fluminense

Nair, Malewar and bowlers lead Vidarbha to third Ranji Trophy title

Playing their first final, Kerala were left with several moments to look back on

Shashank Kishore02-Mar-2025Vidarbha put the ghosts of 2023-24 to bed in the most emphatic manner possible – snatching a thrilling battle for the first-innings lead in style – and then grinding Kerala down for nearly five sessions in the second innings to be crowned Ranji Trophy champions for the third time. It made it all the more special that they achieved this feat in front of nearly 3000 home fans who had trooped into the VCA Stadium in Nagpur on a Sunday afternoon, and saw Akshay Wadkar’s team lift the trophy.A heartbroken Kerala squad were left to rue what could’ve been. Would things have been different had Sachin Baby middled his slog sweep on 98 with a lead within touching distance? What if Akshay Chandran had taken second-innings centurion Karun Nair’s catch early on day four? What if DRS had not reprieved half-centurion Danish Malewar after Vidarbha had lost two early wickets?

There were several such moments Kerala could look back on. All told, they would be richer with the experience of playing in their first final. That their coach Amay Khurasiya walked all the way to the center and took a fistful of a crumbly top surface of the Jamtha deck for posterity told you how much it meant to him.The final day’s play began with some hope for Kerala. Even when Nair fell after having added just three runs to his overnight score of 132, it was a long shot for Kerala to try and gun down a score Vidarbha would set them. The dream, however far-fetched, was still alive when local boy Aditya Sarwate spun one past Nair. There was turn, variable bounce, and plenty of bite off the pitch, especially with a new cherry Kerala had. Then Harsh Dubey was out lbw playing across the line to a full delivery from Eden Apple Tom. Two wickets inside the first 45 minutes of play had Kerala excited. Maybe the Gods were conspiring to make this another thriller? How could a team that got here on the back of leads by one run and two runs fizzle away so easily? Maybe there was another twist. This feeling got even more stronger when Wadkar was bowled by one that scooted low. Sarwate, who had celebrated many special moments with Wadkar by his side in the Vidarbha dressing room, celebrated wildly now at having dismissed him. Sarwate had three wickets suddenly, and all of Kerala’s prayers behind him. This was when Akshay Karnewar, an ambidextrous spinner, who hadn’t had much of a role with his primary skills in the game, made an invaluable 30, which took plenty of time out from the game. As it veered towards lunch and beyond, Kerala’s hopes dimmed, and it was effectively shut out by Darshan Nalkande, who muscled a half-century at which point both teams decided they had had enough. At 2.20pm, with tea looming, the stumps were drawn on an exhilarating season as Vidarbha were officially crowned champions. Having got to the semi-final on the back of the joint-most wins – alongside Mumbai – by a team in a season, they finished it off in typically style. It was a stonewalling effort led by Nair, whose fourth hundred of the season – and ninth overall, across formats led the way. There was also a half-century from the industrious Malewar, their 21-year-old batting hope. They had more than made up for the first-innings lapse, when Nair was run-out after a mix-up with Malewar. That moment had the potential to be game-changing. For Vidarbha, it wasn’t. Because theirs was an effort beyond just Nair’s or Malewar’s.It was Yash Rathod’s too, as he finished the season with the most runs. Or Dubey’s, who took the Ranji record for most wickets in a season. Or Parth Rekhade, whose triple-wicket burst in the semi-final derailed Mumbai, or Dhruv Shorey, who, like Nair, gelled into a new setting with ease. Or Wadkar, a battle-hardened veteran who held the team together through last year’s defeat to finally stand atop the winner’s podium with the trophy in hand.

Chelsea player ratings vs Brighton: Another red card fiasco – Trevoh Chalobah's moment of madness, Malo Gusto's catastrophic cameo sees hopeless Blues throw it all away

Chelsea capitulated in the second half against Brighton as Trevoh Chalobah was sent off and the visitors struck three times to claim a shock 3-1 win. Enzo Fernandez had given the Blues the lead but Danny Welbeck scored twice, with Maxim De Cuyper also on target, as the Blues fell apart and lost more ground in their quest to challenge at the Premier League's summit.

Enzo Maresca's side made a fast start to the game and after Bart Verbruggen made two smart saves to deny both Fernandez and Reece James, he was powerless to prevent the opening goal. A delicious through ball from Moises Caicedo set James on his way, with the Blues skipper crossing for Fernandez to nod home.

Then came the moment that changed everything as, early on in the second half, a hopeless stray pass from Andrey Santos gave the ball to Diego Gomez, who raced through on goal before being brought down by Chalobah. A VAR review followed, with Simon Hooper eventually issuing a red card to the England international.

It went from bad to worse thereafter, with Brighton's pressure eventually telling. Welbeck, who had already stabbed a half-volley inches wide, powered a header home from close range before De Cuyper nodded past Robert Sanchez in stoppage time to make it 2-1. Former Manchester United striker Welbeck still had time to loop the ball high into the net for his second, and the Seagulls' third, in the final seconds, piling on the misery for Marseca on what turned out to be a complete nightmare of an afternoon for the Italian and his team.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Stamford Bridge…

Robert Sanchez (6/10):

Made amends for last weekend's horror show at Old Trafford as he dealt with looping crosses, tried to instigate quick counter-attacks and intelligently came off his line to halt promising Brighton attacks. Would've been at least one or two more goals if it wasn't for him.

Reece James (7/10):

An assured display that saw him gallop forward and claim the assist for Fernandez's opener, as well as defending resolutely. Encouraging that he managed to play on despite appearing to twist his ankle, too, given all his previous injury issues.

Trevoh Chalobah (2/10):

His crazy decision to attempt to make a challenge as Diego Gomez raced through on goal led to a tangle of legs and the inevitable red card that changed everything. Awful.

Jorrel Hato (5/10):

Doubled up with Cucurella to deal with the considerable threat of Minteh and had to be even more alert after Chalobah's red. Taken off straight after Welbeck scored his first having gone missing in the middle.

Marc Cucurella (5/10):

Had a difficult assignment up against the pacey Minteh but stuck to his task and limited the Brighton winger's threat. A bit too fired up against his former team, though, resulting in a rash booking in a game where Chelsea needed calm heads.

AdvertisementAFPMidfield

Andrey Santos (3/10):

Ruined his day with the clumsy touch and wayward pass that inadvertently set Brighton away and led to Chalobah's red card. Hooked immediately after.

Moises Caicedo (7/10):

Consistently snuffed out Brighton attacks and his wonderful ball through sent James in behind for Chelsea's first goal. Life became more difficult for him after the Chalobah red, though.

Enzo Fernandez (7/10):

His bright start to the game was rewarded with a goal and he must have covered every blade of grass over the 90 minutes. The capitulation certainly wasn't down to him.

Getty Images SportAttack

Estevao (7/10):

Livewire. Shades of Eden Hazard with his silky touches and jinking runs, albeit there was no end product today. Sacrificed for Gusto as Maresca looked to shut up shop and hold onto the lead, which obviously didn't work.

Joao Pedro (5/10):

Played the No.9 role well in the first half as he dropped deep and linked attacks but wasn't really his day in front of goal as his team-mates failed to create any big chances for him.

Pedro Neto (4/10):

So pleasing on the eye when he gets his head down and drives forward but there was a frustrating lack of end product that Blues fans will be all too familiar with. Replaced after the equaliser.

AFPSubs & Manager

Josh Acheampong (3/10):

Brought on to fill the hole at centre-back after Chalobah's red card and should've got much tighter to Welbeck for the equaliser before his mistake then led to the third goal.

Malo Gusto (3/10):

Came on midway through the second half and frustrated the Stamford Bridge punters with his lack of invention before failing to stop the cross that led to Welbeck's goal. Might've given away a penalty, too, for a reckless high boot. A woeful cameo.

Benoit Badiashile (N/A):

Replaced Hato for the final 10 minutes and scrapped with Lewis Dunk as a number of Chelsea players lost their heads.

Romeo Lavia (N/A):

On for Pedro Neto as Maresca sensed the danger of a possible Brighton winner, which inevitably came.

Enzo Maresca (3/10):

What a nightmare. Everything looked to be going according to plan until Chalobah's red card and he clearly didn't have the answers as Brighton turned the screw. If anything, the introductions of Acheampong and Gusto made things a lot worse.

Man Utd eyeing PSG star who's now considering exit with Donnarumma

On the dawn of their Premier League meeting to open their respective seasons, Manchester United and Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on the same impressive target.

Amorim: "Smart" Sesko "ready" for Man Utd debut

It’s a big weekend for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side. They’ve had investment this summer and excuses are running out for any potential disastrous form.

Man Utd set sights on Baleba alternative who scored stunner at Old Trafford

The Red Devils are looking at options beyond Carlos Baleba.

BySean Markus Clifford Aug 16, 2025

Whilst there’s still work to do in the transfer market, the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko should hand the Red Devils more than enough firepower to battle their way back into the top six this season. And that could start in statement fashion against Arsenal.

If Amorim wants to see exactly where his side are at in the early days of the season, then Arsenal’s visit will certainly be welcomed. The Portuguese manager may waste no time before turning towards his fresh forwards either, having told reporters that Sesko is “ready”, despite only arriving one week ago.

On the transfer front, however, Manchester United seem far from done. After failing to negotiate a way past Brighton & Hove Albion’s £100m price tag for Carlos Baleba, those at Old Trafford could yet turn towards the likes of Angelo Stiller or others, whilst a Champions League winner is now also on their radar.

Man Utd eyeing Lee Kang-in move

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are now eyeing a move to sign Lee Kang-in from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. The winger is free to leave amid competition for places in France and has already reportedly had direct contact from Arsenal.

Lee Kang-in for Paris Saint-Germain

In a fresh transfer battle ahead of their Premier League tie, United may already find themselves behind but, based on this summer, that may not be a problem.

Despite not having much to offer in terms of European football or a thriving project this summer, the Red Devils have still managed to lure the likes of Sesko away from rivals such as Arsenal and Newcastle United. Now, they could do the same with Lee.

Described as “brilliant” by scout Jacek Kulig in the 2022/23 campaign, and a “joy to watch”, Lee sent a timely reminder of his quality for PSG in their recent Super Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur – scoring an excellent goal to get the Champions League holders back in the contest late on.

Now, it appears the South Korean could well leave with Gianluigi Donnarumma, as he “seriously” considers an exit before the summer deadline.

Sunderland had “maverick” talent on loan, now he's worth more than Brobbey

Sunderland has the swagger of a team that is confident it can secure immediate survival in the Premier League.

With two league wins already under their belt, Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats headed into the chaos of transfer deadline day with a bit between their teeth, culminating in three more signings entering the building to bump the summer spending up on Wearside to a huge £162m.

Bertrand Traore, Brian Brobbey, and Luthsharel Geertruida all joined the ever-rising ranks in quick succession, with Brobbey costing the most lavish fee on the window’s final day at a hefty £21.6m.

There will be pressure on the Dutchman’s shoulders to succeed from the get-go in the Premier League, having previously been a goal machine for his now ex-employers Ajax.

What Brobbey can offer Sunderland

While Leeds United and Burnley remained quiet on the deadline day, as the other top-flight newcomers, Sunderland showed they meant business once again by landing the 23-year-old’s signature.

Le Bris will be especially keen to work with yet another exciting raw talent, with the two-time Eredivisie winner once a much-talked-about starlet in Amsterdam, when collecting a staggering 80 strikes for Ajax at U17, U19, and U21 level.

He has since displayed that same lethal edge in the men’s game in the Netherlands, having tallied up 56 senior strikes for Ajax, before Sunderland came calling.

With Marc Guiu now back at Chelsea, having been recalled in the wake of Liam Delap’s concerning injury, Brobbey does feel like he’s a more than capable replacement for the Blues youngster, considering he already possesses the goalscoring prowess to be a success in a top division.

Brian Brobbey in action for Ajax.

However, as is the harsh reality of football, not every standout purchase ends up going on to be a phenomenal success, with Sunderland never quite able to get the very best out of this former loan attacker, who is now amazingly worth more than the brand-new Black Cats marksman.

The ex-loan "maverick" now worth more than Brobbey

Sunderland fans must have been watching on with amazement at the sheer number of high-profile signings that were signed off on this summer, with the hardened Wearside masses still able to recollect their team’s dire days down in League One.

After their relegation from the top-flight was confirmed at the close of the bleak 2016/17 season, the Black Cats were stuck in the EFL mire right up until promotion was triumphantly clinched earlier this year, with a four-campaign stint in the third tier thrown into the mix.

Bizarrely, before firing home wonderful solo goals like this one for AFC Bournemouth regularly, Antoine Semenyo even called the Black Cats home during the midst of their depressing League One stay.

When Semenyo was shoved out on loan to Wearside from then parent side Bristol City, he was worth just an estimated £340k, as per Football Transfers. Now, even after never collecting a single goal or assist for the League One marooned side, he is worth far more as a Premier League regular for the Cherries.

Semenyo was hailed as a “dangerous” talent by his then Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson when the pair were together at the Stadium of Light, but nobody would have foreseen the rise he would then undergo, with the exciting Ghanaian now up to 24 goals and 11 assists on the South Coast, which has seen his value skyrocket.

According to Football Transfers, the Cherries “maverick” – as he has been dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson – is now worth in the region of £41m, which is a huge increase from his earlier £340k valuation when he was a wide-eyed forward on Wearside.

This is also around £20m more than Sunderland’s standout deadline purchase of Brobbey, with the Dutchman hopeful he can make wave similar waves in the Premier League shortly, albeit when donning the famous red and white strip that never quite suited Semenyo.

GG are on a bull run, having won more games (three) over the past week than they did all of last season. But there’s one thing they haven’t done yet: beat MI, who have a 5-0 record against them in the tournament’s short history. If that wasn’t pressure enough, they now face the challenge of playing Harmanpreet Kaur’s MI in Mumbai, at the Brabourne Stadium, where they are yet to lose a single game. They have been the most explosive side in the middle-overs, courtesy Ash Gardner and new (old) signing Deandra Dottin. But MI have the best economy (6.6 runs an over) and average (17.9) in this phase. This battle will form the crux of the contest. The return to form of Harleen Deol, instrumental in GG’s stunning chase of 178 the other night against Delhi Capitals, bodes well. Kashvee Gautam’s all-round prowess and Beth Mooney’s unshackling at the top make them look more dangerous.MI look equally strong but have changed their batting combinations because of Yastika Bhatia’s prolonged lean run. In their previous game, Amelia Kerr was promoted to open with Hayley Mathews. It remains to be seen if this will be their plan at the back end too. Their new Isak: Newcastle pushing really hard to sign "sensational" £60m CF

The latest chapter in Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United journey got off to a frustrating start as the Magpies drew at Aston Villa to kick off the new Premier League season.

But a point at Villa Park is hardly a poor result, and there was much to like about the visitors’ performance, even with Anthony Gordon moonlighting as a centre-forward in the palpable absence of Alexander Isak, who is AWOL as he awaits a potential move to Merseyside before the end of the month.

The away end sang derisory chants aimed toward the skiving Isak at the end of the goalless draw, and there’s a collective sense of understanding across English football as the Magpies watch their talisman be reduced to just another footballer.

But the club is always bigger than the player, and that’s not so much a truism as a timely reminder. Given the Sweden international’s decision to have excommunicated himself from the St. James’ Park first team, it might be worth selling him this summer after all.

Why Newcastle should sell Alexander Isak

Earlier in August, Liverpool saw an offer worth £110m plus add-ons rejected by Newcastle, who were somewhat affronted by what they perceived as a lowball bid.

Perhaps PIF were just in their grievances, having made it known all summer that the 25-year-old, who has just shy of three years remaining on his contract, can only leave if their valuation, stretching as high as £150m, is set.

Liverpool would have known that their offer would have been rejected; it’s all part of the game. And United must now accelerate their focus on signing two new strikers, as confirmed is the plan by correspondent Craig Hope, before time runs out, and Howe is left with a blinding problem beyond the movements of the market.

The manager’s expertly-woven system at Newcastle is built on the key tenets of togetherness, cohesion and tenacity. The Toon outfight and outthink their opponents routinely, and the proof is in the pudding.

Isak is at odds with this overarching principle, and he must be sold. Newcastle need a number nine who wants to fight for the badge.

Newcastle holding talks for new striker

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are accelerating their bid for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, though PIF are reluctant to meet the Bees’ hefty £60m price tag.

The 28-year-old Wissa has made it clear that he wishes to sign for Newcastle this month, having engaged in discussions with the Tynesiders across recent weeks. However, talks have also been held with further suitors like Tottenham Hotspur.

It’s worth noting that with Callum Wilson having left Newcastle at the end of his contract, this move is viewed in a separate light to that of Isak, with Wissa not a direct replacement as such.

Why Newcastle want Yoane Wissa

Wissa has been at Brentford for four years, joining from Lorient in an £8.5m deal. Steady, clinical progress has seen him establish himself as the club’s record scorer in the Premier League.

Last season alone, he scored 19 times in the league for Thomas Frank’s side, and, aged 28, feels the time is right to earn a big move to a club competing within the European theatre.

Though Isak has a far wider breadth of quality within his locker, Wissa would take his place as Newcastle’s frontman and provide Howe’s side with a prolific outlet from which they can channel their creativity.

And given that the two forwards share a certain unsavoury similarity in the way in which they are looking to force their way through to a new home, might this prove to be Howe’s version of Isak?

Wissa maintained an impressive level in front of goal last term, and while he’s not an overly creative player, the Congolese international did average 0.8 key passes per Premier League game last season, via Sofascore, and contributed with four assists.

Isak vs Wissa 2024-25 stats (timeless)

While Howe would need to continue to quest for a younger and more mobile striker to complement Wissa and replace Isak, the Bees star is a proven goalscorer in the English top flight and he could make all the difference in challenging for a place in the top four (or five) once again while competing in the Champions League, aiming to wade deep into Europe’s elite club competition.

Moreover, Wissa’s experience could contrast nicely against the more unproven youth of another striker looking to make their way into Howe’s plans, thus creating a kind of balance at number nine between two players desperate to succeed at the club.

Hailed for his “sensational” goalscoring qualities by Sky Sports’ Mark McAdam, Wissa is not Isak, but then he knows that, and Howe does too, and signing a player more limited in the scope of their attacking arsenal might actually mark a sure-fire route toward continuity of slick, effective attacking play.

Ultimately, Howe and his transfer team will be fully aware that Wissa would not bring the same calibre of technical ability as Isak has done over the past three years.

Certainly, the French-born forward lacks Isak’s zippy athleticism and his potential to become something even greater over the coming years.

Yoane Wissa celebrates for Brentford.

But he is a proven Premier League striker, having scored 19 goals last season and having showcased his link-up ability through an intuitive on-pitch relationship with Bryan Mbeumo over the past few years.

It’s crucial that Newcastle ensure they keep chugging onward after a frustrating transfer window, and by signing a striker who can maintain prolific levels of a similar degree to Isak, they might just achieve that.
