The Euro XI: Finding joy in the international break, Spain's Lamine Yamal remains good, and why is World Cup qualifying so boring?

GOAL US unpacks the main storylines from the international break and World Cup qualifying in The Euro XI

We are told in life to love the small things that bring us joy. We should appreciate every day, find comfort in the pitter-patter of life. Even pessimists should try to keep their glass half full.

Well, these are all very nice sentiments, in theory. But they are particularly hard to bring into practice during an international break. The average soccer fan struggles with this kind of thing. When your club is inactive, do you try to find joy in the international game? It's not so easy, especially when things aren't competitive.

Friendlies can be tedious. World Cup qualifying feels routine. Sometimes it gets a little hard to find the buzz in it all. But even with club football on hold for an audacious SIX more days, reasons for excitement remain.

GOAL US presents The Euro XI, with 11 key observations from the weekend.

AFP1Lamine Yamal remains good at football

We all suspected the Neymar arc was coming. Here's Yamal, teenage superstar, supremely gifted, the world at his feet. But he likes to have fun. He enjoys life. And he lets us know all of these things on social media. Remind you of anyone? Lamine may yet flame out, but for now, he remains one of the best in the world – something he proved by bagging three (!!) assists for Spain in their battering of Turkey.

AdvertisementAFP2Tricky Mikky can score some goals

Last year, pretty much everyone at Arsenal got injured. So, Mikel Arteta decided to play a defensive midfielder as a No. 9. And Mikel Merino suprised a few, grabbing a fair share of goals down the stretch to keep the Gunners alive en route to another second-place finish. He probably won't be up there much for Arsenal this year, but he showed that he hasn't forgotten how to stick it in the net – bagging three in Spain's win. Not a bad showing.

Getty Images Sport3Tommy Tactics, making England bang average

What do you expect from Andorra as a footballing entity? The tiny nation state do a good job these days of basically just not getting battered. They show up, know they're going to lose, and take positives from a hard fought 2-0 loss to a far superior team.

And that's just what happened when they faced England. The Three Lions found it hard, scored two, and were pretty decent value for the result. But of course, the world can't have nice things, and Tuchel has been heavily criticized for the tepid margin of victory. Reeks of a World Cup semifinal loss.

AFP4Memphis Depay, Netherlands legend

Admit it: you forgot about Memphis. Of course you did. He may be only 31, but his career has nose dived since he joined Manchester United nearly a decade ago. He now plays for Brazilian side Corinthians, and remains a pretty important part of the Dutch national team, too – something he showed by bagging two and becoming his country's all-time top goalscorer as they edged Lichtenstein, 3-2.

Forward could now leave Tottenham after Son following calls in recent days

Tottenham still have a few key items on the agenda this summer, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

As Spurs maintain their ongoing talks to sign both Savinho from Man City and Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, in what would be a statement quick-fire deal ahead of the new Premier League season this weekend, chairman Daniel Levy is also looking to balance the books with sales.

According to reports, there remains a possibility that striker Richarlison could leave before the transfer deadline on September 1, and Tottenham are believed to be considering Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson as a potential replacement for the Brazilian (Fabrizio Romano).

Uncertainty also surrounds the future of Bryan Gil, who confirmed in an interview earlier this year that he’s mutually agreed to part ways with Tottenham.

“That’s something my agent will tell me where things are going, but they [Spurs] told me, and I told them, that the best thing is for us not to continue being linked to Tottenham,” said Gil to Estadio Deportivo in April.

Tottenham winger Bryan Gil.

“They bet on me when I was young, and they’ve treated me fairly well, but if I have to go back there, I’ll focus on giving my best as always. I’m calm because no one can have a bad word to say about me not being professional. Without playing, I’ve always trained well, I’ve done what I had to do, so whatever has to happen, will happen. We’ll see where we are next year.”

No obvious suitors have made any progress when it comes to a swoop for Gil, though, so the Spaniard’s departure could be one for later in the window.

The same can be said for Israeli winger Manor Solomon, who’s attracting serious interest from the Premier League.

Manor Solomon to leave Tottenham in late-window move after calls

The former Fulham star, who joined Spurs on a free transfer in 2023, has struggled with injury during his time in N17 and spent 2024/2025 on loan at Leeds United – where he impressed with 10 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

Despite his resurgence at Elland Road and playing a key role in their push for promotion, Solomon could leave Tottenham during the final few weeks of the window, as explained by Fabrizio Romano.

“Manor Solomon could leave in the final weeks of the window with La Liga and PL clubs calling in the recent days,” said Romano, via X.

“Movement started with Spurs aware of interest.”

The 26-year-old appears poised to join fellow left-winger, Son Heung-min, in quitting Spurs after the latter sealed an MLS record £20 million move to Los Angeles FC recently.

Unlike Son, Solomon never quite left his mark at Spurs, and his sale would count as pure profit in the eyes of PSR considering he joined for free.

Any club who lands the player would be getting a serious attacking option, though one not quite good enough to force his way into Thomas Frank’s plans.

“He didn’t really get his opportunities at Spurs last year but he’s very well established at international level, playing over 35 games for Israel,” said former Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson to MOT Leeds News last year.

“Looking at his quality and directness, he’s someone who belongs in the Premier League.”

'Wonderful' Luka Modric 'one minute' ahead of the rest as AC Milan coach praises veteran midfielder's first Serie A goal

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri heaped praise on midfield maestro Luka Modric after his decisive goal secured the win over Bologna. Allegri believes Modric’s exceptional game intelligence keeps him a step ahead of both opponents and teammates, making him an "extraordinary" player.

  • Modric's game winning goal

In a match where Milan kept a perfect defensive record by not allowing Bologna a single shot on target, Modric’s solitary goal made all the difference. Starting a counterattack from deep inside Milan’s half in the 60th minute, Modric surged into Bologna’s penalty area to meet Alexis Saelemaekers's perfectly-timed pass with a calm finish to the goalkeeper’s right.

What Allegri said about Modric and Milan's performance yesterday

Allegri was pleased with Modric's performance and heaped praise on him afterwards, telling reporters: "Luka is an extraordinary player, it's a pleasure to watch him play, and above all, he's a truly humble guy, just like the champion he is. He's wonderful, he knows where the ball is going one minute before, and then he's extraordinary."

Allegri was also pleased with the team effort from the players, saying: "It was important to win at home without conceding a goal. In difficult moments, the team remained united: in those moments, it's important not to disintegrate and let them pass."

  • The controversial penatly decision and Allegri's red card

In a controversial moment late in the game, on-field referee Matteo Marcenaro initially awarded a penalty after Bologna midfielder Remo Freuler was judged to have fouled Christian Nkunku in the box. However, the decision was overturned due to insufficient contact following a VAR review. The decision sparked the ire of Allegri, who was sent off for dissent.

Allegri downplayed the incident later, adding: "Nothing special, there was the penalty incident and at that moment I had something to say to the fourth official and luckily the jacket saved me."

Milan and Allegri's challenges up ahead

Despite starting the campaign with a loss to Cremonese at home, Allegri will be happy to have two wins in two games. He will hope that Modric will be able to reproduce his form from Bologna when Milan will travel next to Stadio Friuli to take on Udinese.

Sunderland could sign dream partner for Xhaka in "sensational" £22.5m star

Sunderland’s wild ambition in the summer transfer window to date indicates that they’re searching for more than just survival when leaping up to the Premier League.

Instead, the Black Cats are dreaming of taking the top-flight by storm, with signings in through the door such as Habib Diarra for a whopping £30m chomping at the bit to become a star at the top level.

That is easier said than done with no Premier League experience next to your name, but he will hope he can settle in swiftly to his pressurised environment when linking up with potential new teammate Granit Xhaka, who has been done there and done that in the unforgiving league previously.

Why Sunderland are chasing after Xhaka

Indeed, Xhaka looks to be edging ever closer to a return to England, with Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg going as far as to reveal that the Black Cats have agreed personal terms with the Swiss.

There is a sticking point still when it comes to his £17m valuation – and Erik ten Hag’s desire to keep hold of him – but when compared to Sunderland’s other excessive summer spending, this doesn’t feel like an inflated price to pay for a midfield enforcer who is well-versed in what it takes to be a success story in the Premier League.

Whilst he wasn’t always in the Arsenal good books across his lengthy 297-game stay in North London, owing to his full-blooded displays sometimes going overboard, he would be a welcome addition to Le Bris’ camp all the same, especially as they try to gain more top-flight experience in their camp.

After all, Xhaka would impressively notch up 17 goals and 24 assists across 225 league outings for the Gunners before seeking out pastures new with Bayer Leverkusen, on top of launching himself into 1001 duels in total as a combative presence well-suited to a potential relegation tussle.

Yet, even at 32 years of age, Xhaka will hope he can get even more out of his varied game on his reentry to the lively level, with another new signing on Sunderland’s agenda potentially going on to be a dream teammate for the left-footed battler to work alongside.

Sensational Sunderland target could be a dream for Xhaka

Xhaka bowed out of the Emirates in 2023 after arguably experiencing one of his finest seasons in Arsenal red, with his output of seven goals and seven assists very much sticking out.

Across his two previous seasons before bowing out in style, Xhaka would only collect six goals and assists in total, as those at the Stadium of Light now hope this magic in terms of offering goals and assists – away from his known image of being attritional – comes to the forefront on Wearside to help survival be reached at a minimum.

He could well shine even brighter in this regard if Bilal El Khannouss seals a switch to the Black Cats shortly, with the creative Leicester City machine potentially set to make a move to Sunderland for around the £22.5m mark, amid interest also coming from Aston Villa.

Amazingly, despite the Foxes succumbing to relegation last season, the Moroccan would stand out as an entertaining playmaker all campaign long when putting in many a memorable display for his doomed outfit.

An encouraging two goals and three assists would come El Khannouss’ way from 32 league clashes, with Xhaka perhaps ready to score even more of his trademark strikes from outside of the box when being teed up by the £22.5m star, off the back of him creating eight big chances at the foot of the Premier League.

The relationship will, no doubt, be reciprocal, too, as El Khannouss becomes even more clued up about the challenges of the daunting division, knowing he’s partnered next to an individual who knows how to battle and succeed in such a brutal terrain.

Adding Xhaka is a jaw-dropping move for Sunderland to make, but throwing the “sensational” Moroccan – as he’s been labelled by football analyst Ben Mattinson – into the mix, too, would be yet another sublime move that catches the eye.

In the end, the midfield duo could well become a devastating force together that ultimately helps the Black Cats become a surprise Premier League package.

Man City, Real Madrid & PSG will have learned their lesson from Champions League as ex-Bayern Munich chief expects 'full throttle' from Europe's big boys

Former Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has stated that big clubs like Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain will have learned their lesson in the new Champions League format after their shaky performances at the start of last season. The German legend believes the top clubs have learned that they must attempt to dominate the competition from the very first round.

European giants prepare for Champions League openers

The new Champions League structure debuted last season and saw the likes of Madrid, Bayern, PSG and City have to fight for their place in the last-16 via a knock-out play-off tie. It marked a big change from the previous format, which resulted in some low-stakes matches at the end of the group stage, with the top teams often guaranteed a place in the next round by week four.

With the 2025-26 campaign getting underway this week, Rummenigge says he finds the new format much more exciting than the previous one, but expects the bigger teams to start the campaign with maximum intensity to ensure they avoid the risk of an embarrassing exit.

AdvertisementAFPRummenigge expects 'full throttle' from City, Madrid & PSG

Rummenigge told the : “In the old group phase, everything was often already decided after the fourth matchday. Bayern Munich were regularly eliminated, and there were one or two meaningless games. I think this way as a football fan. The fact alone that four top teams – Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain – had to make it to the playoffs in the first round was proof to me how much more exciting this system is.

"The big teams have understood that they have to go full throttle from the start to get into the top eight – because that's what everyone wants. A year ago, a lot of things were still new; some top clubs were taking a more relaxed approach to one or two matches. I expect a clear learning curve now."

Bayern legend disagrees with 'Hoffenheim' billing

Bayern are looking to go further than they did last season, having been knocked out by Inter at the semi-final stage. However, the club's honorary president, Uli Hoeness, recently dismissed their chances of competing for the crown, labelling Vincent Kompany's side the Hoffenheim of the Champions League. Rummenigge, who had a good rapport with the president, has disagreed with him.

“No. For once, I disagree with Uli Hoeness when he says we're the Hoffenheim of the Champions League," he said. "We're never underdogs! We may not always be the favorites, but that's not a bad thing."

Nottingham Forest in talks to sign "outstanding" ace; same agent as Awoniyi

Nottingham Forest are in “talks” with an “outstanding” player over a move to the club in the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Nottingham Forest willing to spend big in midfield

The Reds continue to be linked with moves to the City Ground before the new Premier League season gets underway, with AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah seen as an exciting option before the window slams shut.

Forest are reportedly willing to pay as much as £26m for the USA international, with the Midlands outfit also hoping that they can “close the deal quickly”, enhancing Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad depth in the middle of the park.

Away from the Reds’ pursuit of Musah, other exciting options are also being targeted, including Ipswich Town winger Omari Hutchinson. Forest are said to be in talks over a summer move for the Englishman, with a £35m bid tabled.

Juventus ace Douglas Luiz has been heavily linked to the Premier League side, while RB Salzburg’s Mads Bidstrup has been mentioned as an alternative to the Brazilian.

Nottingham Forest in "talks" to sign midfielder

Now, according to Plettenberg on X, “talks have taken place” between Salzburg and Nottingham Forest over the signing of Bidstrup this summer, and with the player himself, who is open to a new challenge.

This is another encouraging update regarding the Reds acquiring the midfielder’s signature, with the Dane looking increasingly like a leading option to move to the City Ground before deadline day ends.

Bidstrup has now racked up 84 appearances for Salzburg, not to mention representing Denmark across five different youth age groups, and analyst Chris Kearney has heaped praise on him.

Still only 24, Forest would get the best years of Bidstrup’s career out of him, with his peak still likely to come, and he can provide welcome competition in midfield, as well as being compared in style to Luiz by FBref.

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 7, 2025

The fact that the Salzburg man has the same agent as Taiwo Awoniyi could be a bonus in smoothing negotiations along, and if the Reds can strike a deal, it could prove to be vital business as they prepare to shine in both the Premier League and Europe this season.

Trescothick on Crawley: 'We'll help him find a way to get back'

The England opener scored only 52 runs in six innings in New Zealand, falling to Matt Henry each time

Vithushan Ehantharajah16-Dec-2024If there were loyalty cards in Test cricket, Matt Henry would be in line for a free Zak Crawley.Henry bagged Crawley for the sixth time this series – and eighth overall – late on day three in Hamilton, as England went to stumps on 18 for 2, chasing a ridiculous 658.An earlier lbw dismissal off the fifth ball of England’s second innings was overturned successfully on height, after Crawley had made strides down the ground. Henry then pinned Crawley in front with his last delivery of the day. Umpire Adrian Holdstock’s finger went up again and Crawley called for DRS once more, only this time umpire’s call had leg stump clipped by a whisker.Crawley’s walk back was perhaps the first time the torment endured over the last few weeks spilled over on the field. There were a few choice words for Holdstock and a meeting with match referee David Boon could round off what has been a dispiriting tour for the opener.Related

Williamson ton has England staring down prospect of heavy defeat

Kane Williamson's fabulous five at Seddon Park

His series ends with just 52 runs from six innings at an average of 8.66. No England opener has batted as many times in a single series and averaged so little. Factor in 139 runs at 27.80 on the tour of Pakistan and it has been an unhelpful winter for Crawley’s career average. Having moved past 33 after the first West Indies Test in the summer, following strong showings in the 2023 Ashes (480 runs at 53.33) and away series in India at the start of 2024 (407 at 40), it has dropped to 30.51.England’s management has long insulated Crawley from criticism, citing steadfast belief he is capable of other worldly innings against the best teams in the world. His output against Australia last year, along with striking the first ball of the series for four off Pat Cummins, and a domineering 189 in the fourth Test as one of three fifty-plus scores, vindicated their stance. It is a stance that remains, particularly with India and Australia on the schedule for 2025. Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick reiterated their support of Crawley, while also empathising with his struggles as a former opening batter.”It’s always tough when someone gets something over you, and you find it really challenging and you’ve got to come up with plans,” Trescothick said. “I had similar situations in my time when I was playing against other oppositions.”You go away when you’ve got the opportunity, which he has now, to try and think about it before next time they come up against each other.”I think the important part of this is to remember we’re very much focussed on him being the opening batter for a good period to come. We’ve seen the damage that he does and how he goes about it.”I don’t want to give you too much about how he goes about it in the changing room because it’s the private area of what we have… but he’s a strong character. Although it’s challenging when it’s like this, when someone gets you under the pump, it’s tough, but he’ll find a way. And we’ll help him find a way to get back to that point.”Trescothick also confirmed Crawley’s poor form had nothing to do with the fractured finger sustained in the third Test against West Indies which ruled him out of the Sri Lanka series at the end of the summer. Nevertheless, he has scored just 191 runs across 11 innings since.England do not play Test cricket again until May, with a one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, in which time they believe Crawley will emerge from his slump. He will return home after this tour and then head out to South Africa for a stint with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, which begins on January 9. Free spirited white-ball cricket may be what he needs to emerge out of his funk.
