The ECB will invest an additional £800,000 in wages for the women’s Hundred in 2024 in a bid to attract the world’s best overseas players and to close the tournament’s gender pay gap, with men’s salaries frozen for the third straight season.ESPNcricinfo understands that the salary cap will increase by 40% for each of the eight women’s squads, from £250,000 to £350,000, with the top three salary bands increasing by 60%. That means that the two highest earners in each squad will earn £50,000, up from £31,250 in 2023 and £15,000 in 2021.Salaries in the women’s Hundred still pale in comparison to those on offer in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India, where Smriti Mandhana is the leading earner on INR 3.4 crore (£320,000). But the ECB hope that the increase will attract the world’s best players in 2024, after some leading Australians – including Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath opted out of the Hundred last summer. The Women’s Future Tours Programme is clear for all full-member teams apart from Ireland and Sri Lanka during the Hundred’s window this year. With the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup due to take place in September-October, overseas players may see the Hundred as an opportunity to prepare for those international tournaments. The investment in player wages will also make a dent in the Hundred’s gender pay gap, with women’s players now paid on average 35% of their male counterparts, compared to 25% in 2023. The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report into English cricket last summer called for equal pay in the Hundred by 2025, though the ECB have not committed to that recommendation.Salaries in the men’s Hundred are due to stay at the same level as 2023, with a top salary band of £125,000 and a salary cap of £1 million per squad. The tournament struggled to attract star names last summer and the top wage bracket remains significantly below those on offer in Major League Cricket (MLC).Related

Counties told to 'show their vision' as ECB revamps women's competitions

ECB seek decision on private investment in Hundred by spring 2024

Buttler backs the Hundred as 'huge part' of English cricket's future

The Hundred will run from late July to late August in 2024 and the early stages will clash with both England men’s third Test against West Indies and the final week of MLC. With the men’s T20 World Cup staged in the Caribbean and the United States in June, Hundred teams fear that many overseas players will stay in the region for MLC.The ECB has been consulting with counties over the future of the Hundred since the end of last season and there is a growing consensus that the tournament will be expanded to nine or ten teams in 2025. Under one proposal, counties would be gifted equity stakes in the Hundred teams that play at their venues, which could then be sold to private investors.Jos Buttler, England men’s white-ball captain, implored the ECB to turn the Hundred into “the second-best domestic tournament in the world” behind the IPL last year and MLC’s emergence as a lucrative, Indian-backed competition during the English summer has heightened the sense that the Hundred requires further investment.Nevertheless, the investment in women’s salaries, over the men’s, underlines the sense that the tournament’s dual-gender format has been integral to its success to date, and that further closing the pay gap is a priority. The Hundred will retain its double-header format in 2024, with men’s and women’s fixtures played back-to-back at the same venues.Teams will soon begin to make retention offers to players they wish to keep for this season from their 2023 squads, with the men’s and women’s drafts expected to take place in March. Fixtures will be published next week, with the knockout stages again played at The Oval (eliminators) and Lord’s (finals).

Kulkarni ton, Tiwari four-for take India past USA and enter Super Six unbeaten

Australia also enter Super Six with an all-win record after beating Sri Lanka by six wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2024Arshin Kulkarni’s 108 off 118 balls, Musheer Khan’s 76-ball 73, and Naman Tiwari’s frugal spell of 4 for 20 led India to a big 201-run win over USA in the Under-19 World Cup on Sunday. The win meant they kept their unblemished record intact going into the Super Six of the tournament.India piled up 326 for 5 in their 50 overs with Kulkarni and Musheer doing the bulk of the scoring. In reply, medium pacer Tiwari picked up 4 for 20 in nine overs as USA were kept to 125 for 8 in Bloemfontein. After India were sent in to bat, Adarsh Singh struck three fours in the first over, but the USA bowlers kept both him and Kulkarni in check for a while. India could only manage 40 after ten overs, which led to Adarsh getting a bit desperate and chipping Ateendra Subramanian, the medium pacer, to mid-off when on 25.Kulkarni and Musheer, however, dug in to add 155 runs off 142 balls for the second wicket. Both the batters took their time in settling in before opening up. Kulkarni had a lucky escape when he was dropped on 16 at mid-off and made sure to cash in. He hacked quick bowler Aarin Nadkarni for six over deep midwicket and clobbered Rishi Ramesh, the legspinner, around the same region before reaching his half-century off 70 balls.Naman Tiwari rattled the USA batters with his pace•ICC via Getty ImagesMusheer continued from where he had left off against Ireland. He got going with a cover drive off Nadkarni and then hit Utkarsh Srivastava across the line for six. It took him 56 balls to reach his half-century and with both batters now set, they got the boundaries away more frequently.Musheer fell to Ramesh, but Kulkarni reached the three-figure mark with a four past fine leg off 110 balls. Captain Uday Saharan struck a 27-ball 35 to keep the momentum going, but he and Kulkarni fell in the space of six balls as USA looked for a way back. India, however, were 259 for 4 in the 44th over at that stage, and Priyanshu Moliya (27* off 19 balls), Sachin Dhas (20 off 16) and Aravelly Avanish (12* off seven) played important cameos to take India past the 325-run mark.USA were never really in the chase. They lost openers Prannav Chettipalayam and Bhavya Mehta in the first two overs. Tiwari then removed Ramesh for 8 as USA slipped to 12 for 3 after 7.5 overs. Siddarth Kappa and Srivastava stayed firm for a bit, adding 43 runs off 93 balls for the fourth wicket, before offspinner Moliya got into the act, sending back Kappa for 18.Tiwari then added to his wicket tally as he removed Srivastava and Manav Nayak in successive overs to have USA at 79 for 6, which soon became 90 for 7 after 30 overs. Amogh Arepally (27* off 71) and Nadkarni (20 off 44) added 31 off 78 balls for the eighth wicket, which delayed the inevitable and ensured India couldn’t bowl the opposition out.India headed into the Super Sixes topping their group and will face New Zealand on Tuesday.Callum Vidler picked 3 for 28 from his nine overs•ICC/Getty ImagesHicks and Vidler ensure Australia enter Super Six with all-win recordCallum Vidler and Ryan Hicks starred with ball and bat respectively to help Australia beat Sri Lanka and go into the Super Six of the Under-19 World Cup undefeated, with a healthy net run-rate of 2.6.Quick bowler Vidler started the match by nicking Pulindu Perera off in the first over. Sineth Jayawardena, who had won the toss and batted, moved Sri Lanka forward with a 47-run stand with Supun Waduge, but Vidler and Tom Campbell, the offspinner, removed them in successive overs to rebuild the pressure.Dinura Kalupahana, top-scoring with 64 with nine fours and three sixes, stitched two 40-plus stands in the middle overs with Ravishan de Silva and Rusanda Gamage. But medium pacer Harjas Singh and offspinner Raf MacMilllan cut short the promising partnerships before Vidler’s return took out Kalupahana and left Sri Lanka stuttering at 166 for 6 as the final powerplay got underway.Campbell and his new-ball partner Mahli Beardman took out the tail as Sri Lanka were all out seven balls short of their 50 overs.Harry Dixon’s flier, comprising three fours and a six off his first 13 balls, allowed Australia to cruise through a 71-run opening stand with Sam Konstas. Left-arm spinner Vishwa Lahiru, the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowlers, dismissed Dixon and Hugh Weibgen in consecutive overs and with legspinner Malsha Tharupathi getting Konstas, Australia were wobbling for a bit.Hicks ensured it was just that by accumulating a slow but steady 49-run stand with Harjas before joining forces with Campbell. The two shared eight boundaries in their partnership and did not allow the asking rate to rise over five at any point. Their unbeaten 82-run stand took Australia home with seven balls to spare.

'It doesn't make sense' – Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati weeks away from full training as Monaco coach reveals extent of ex-Man Utd and Barcelona stars' fitness issues

Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati will not be ready to feature for Monaco by the time the season begins, with the head coach not looking to rush them.

Pogba and Fati on specific program since joining MonacoCoach confirms duo not at their 100 per cent yetKeen on exercising patience before handing them playing timeFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Fans are excited to watch Pogba return to football after he signed for the French club this summer almost two years since his last game, with Fati also joining him in an attempt to resurrect his career. However, Monaco head coach Adi Hutter did not have positive news with regards to the duo's fitness, conceding that his new signings are still a long way away from attending full training with the rest of the squad.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pogba last played a competitive game of football in September 2023 as a Juventus player, before he was sentenced to an 18-month ban after he was found guilty of doping. On the other hand, Fati's career has been riddled with injuries, preventing him from reaching the heights he was once destined for. The Spaniard was unable to convince Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick of his talent, leading him to be relegated to a bench role. Often, he was not even used as a substitute. In July, Hutter emphasised on exactly the same while speaking about Fati and Pogba. The duo have not made a single appearance in the pre-season matches, and it's unlikely they will be match-fit by the time Ligue 1 kicks off.

WHAT ADI HUTTER SAID

Speaking to reporters, Hutter said: “I want [Fati] to return as soon as possible, but as we said at the beginning of the season, we have to be careful with Ansu. We have to get him in tune. It doesn’t make sense for him to return to the pitch as soon as possible only to get injured or have problems. We are doing everything possible for him. I’m happy with the current squad and we’ll see when Ansu returns, and Paul too.

“It can be complicated. I think that in ten or fifteen days he will be more present in training. For now, he is evaluating his treatment. Little by little, we hope to be able to bring him closer to the team. He knows football and is a high-level player. We have to get him in shape so that he can play good football while respecting our principles.”

Green's masterful century lifts Australia in challenging conditions

Battling cramp, and a Matt Henry-inspired NZ attack on a green pitch in Wellington, the allrounder held his team together in style

Tristan Lavalette28-Feb-2024Cameron Green stamped himself as Australia’s No. 4 with a brilliant century to defy New Zealand’s all-out pace attack on a challenging surface in Wellington on a compelling opening day of the first Test.In just his fourth innings after being recalled into the team, Green pushed through cramps and reached his second Test ton with a boundary through backward point on the second last ball before stumps. He put a tiring New Zealand attack to the sword late on to finish unbeaten on 103 from 155 balls. In their first Test in New Zealand since 2016, Australia’s rocky innings endured a collapse of 4 for 28, including failures to Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head, after a half-century opening partnership between Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith.Related

But a 67-run stand between Green and Mitchell Marsh, who counterpunched with 40 off 39 balls, steadied Australia who ended the opening day of the two-match series satisfied with their comeback after being sent in.Green had made an anxious start before settling and mixed strong defence with attractive drives. He also was inventive and countered Matt Henry’s prodigious movement by shuffling down the crease.Green, who bats at No. 4 for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield, reached his half-century in risky fashion when he almost offered a return catch to Tim Southee as the ball went through his hands and sped to the boundary. The decision to shoehorn Green into the line-up after David Warner’s retirement, and also prepare for this series in the Shield rather than playing T20 cricket, has been vindicated.1:59

Malcolm: Green century a vindication of his move to No. 4

Relentlessly bowling outside the off-stump, Henry exploited the pitch well and his standout performance of 4 for 43 from 20 overs was highlighted by a spectacular delivery to knock over Khawaja’s middle stump. The notably green surface quickened up as the day wore on and there was also uneven bounce as Will O’Rourke continued his strong start to Test cricket with potent short-pitched bowling that jumped off a length.New Zealand, having only beaten Australia once from 29 Test matches since 1993, stuck with a seam heavy attack by including Scott Kuggeleijn and deciding against recalling left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner.Australia went in unchanged from the side that suffered a shock eight-run defeat against West Indies at the Gabba last month, sticking with the same frontline attack for the sixth straight Test.In a new era after the retirement of firebrand Neil Wagner, who did re-emerge later in the day as a substitute fielder, New Zealand’s new-look quicks looked to make early inroads against a rejigged Australia top-order still settling into place following the departure of Warner.Continuing a long trend of captains electing to bowl at Basin Reserve, Southee had no hesitation to send Australia in amid overcast conditions. With a gusty breeze behind him, Henry bowled a probing six-over spell with the new ball and was locked in a compelling battle of patience with Khawaja. In his first Test innings as an opener away from home, Smith started nervously before a trademark cover drive to the boundary off a rare loose Southee delivery came as a confidence boost. But having been devoid of the strike, Smith became noticeably edgy again and set off for a risky single only for Khawaja to send him back as he scrambled to the non-striker’s end. Australia appeared poised to make it through the first session unscathed before Smith, his third Test since shifting up the order, nicked off to Henry to end on 31 off 71 as New Zealand carried the momentum into the second session.Matt Henry made Nathan Lyon his fourth victim on the first day•Associated Press

A hesitant Labuschagne was worked over after lunch by Kuggeleijn, who had been hustling into the crease, and he produced an outside edge that was well caught by Daryl Mitchell low to his left at first slip. Having made just 1 off 27 balls, Labuschagne trudged off visibly disappointed as his lean patch continued.Head has recently been feast or famine at Test level and was relieved to get off the mark with a single after a king pair against West Indies at the Gabba. But he did not add to his tally after being undone by the extra pace of O’Rourke to be caught behind off the shoulder of the bat.Marsh was undaunted by Australia’s predicament and started with a first-ball boundary as he continued his remarkable rejuvenation at Test level. He halted New Zealand’s charge before miscuing a pull shot off Henry straight after tea with Alex Carey dismissed shortly after.Australia were in danger of being bowled out for under 200 before Green took control with a statement innings to leave the contest intriguingly poised.

PCB terminates Haris Rauf's central contract for not committing to Australia tour

Fast bowler will also not be granted an NOC to participate in any overseas league until June 30

Danyal Rasool15-Feb-2024The PCB has come down hard on fast bowler Haris Rauf, who made himself unavailable for Pakistan’s Test series against Australia late last year, by terminating his central contract. In a statement released by the PCB, the board said a hearing was conducted following Rauf’s decision to not participate in the three-match series, and that “the views of all stakeholders” was considered.Rauf will also not be granted an NOC to participate in any overseas league until June 30, 2024. ESPNcricinfo understands this punishment does not extend to Rauf being omitted from the national side; to the contrary, the PCB want him to be available for all international commitments during this time. The focus of the hearings concerned the lead-up to Pakistan’s tour of Australia, where they were scheduled to play three Tests. When chief selector Wahab Riaz announced the squad, he said Rauf had reneged on an earlier commitment to be available for that series, criticising him for going back on his word and saying it would “hurt Pakistan cricket”.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands Rauf viewed that exchange very differently, claiming he had never confirmed his availability, and stating he wanted to take care of his body and prioritise white-ball cricket. However, it would appear that that argument did not cut through with the board in the hearing that followed.”The PCB management provided a chance for a personal hearing to Haris in compliance with the principles of natural justice on 30 January, 2024, and his response was found unsatisfactory,” the PCB said. “Playing for Pakistan is the ultimate honour and privilege for any sportsperson. Refusal to be part of Pakistan’s Test squad in the absence of any medical report or justifiable reason is a material violation of the central contract.”Pakistan did find themselves devoid of high pace during the series against Australia. Shaheen Afridi hasn’t yet recovered to hit the speeds he did before his knee injury in the final of the T20 World Cup in 2022, while Naseem Shah and Mohammad Hasnain were also out with long-term injuries over the winter. In the event, the difference between Pakistan and Australia’s fast bowlers’ pace was clear, and the visitors were clean swept 3-0.The decision to refuse Rauf an NOC till the end of June is more a rhetorical expression of the PCB’s dissatisfaction than a material disadvantage to the player. The PSL, which begins on February 17 – and which Rauf will play – extends till March 18, and Rauf would regardless not have been a part of the IPL, which follows the PSL.The T20 Blast in England does start in May, but Rauf’s commitments with the national side in England, where Pakistan will be playing a white-ball series, would have precluded his participation anyway. The T20 World Cup begins in June, and extends beyond the end of the month, when the restriction on Rauf’s participation in overseas tournaments lapses. It is not yet clear if Rauf has any avenues of appealing the decision. He has been approached by ESPNcricinfo for comment.

Blazing Bedingham ton leaves Worcestershire facing uphill struggle

Centurion David Bedingham and Scott Borthwick propelled Durham into a position of considerable strength to push for a first victory of the season in the battle of the two promoted teams in the Vitality County Championship at Chester Road.Their bowlers went to work in the morning session and collected the final six Worcestershire wickets to establish a first-innings lead of 60 on a wicket still offering some assistance to the seamers but with enough pace to encourage stroke-play.Then Bedingham, in particular, and Durham captain Borthwick went to town during a third-wicket partnership of 195 in just 34 overs.Bedingham continued the form he had shown after making his Test breakthrough for South Africa in the winter with 56 on his debut against India and scores of 39, 110, 32 and 87 versus New Zealand. His second fifty required just 24 balls as he races to three figures off 79 deliveries with five sixes and 11 fours.By the close Durham had extended their overall advantage to 379.For the Durham attack, it was a welcome return to conditions offering some assistance after the graveyard at Edgbaston where Warwickshire amassed 698 for 3 against the Kookaburra ball and a short boundary.Ben Raine and Matthew Potts had combined figures of 0 for 206 on that occasion but showed their quality here. Jake Libby was again the main contributor to Worcestershire’s modest total with a composed 61. He has amassed 400 runs at an average of 100 in the last four Championship matches spanning the end of last season and the start of 2024.But the quick scoring by Bedingham and Borthwick in the final session means Worcestershire are facing a daunting target on Sunday to avoid a first setback of the season.Worcestershire resumed on 78 for 4 and much responsibility rested on the shoulders of Libby and Jason Holder if they were to get within touching distance of Durham’s total.Holder did the bulk of the early scoring, cover driving Raine and Potts for boundaries, and then pulling the former for a big six over midwicket. But Raine had his revenge and struck in successive overs to put the visitors in the ascendancy.Holder was bowled after pushing forward and then Matthew Waite had not troubled the scorers when he nibbled at a delivery and was caught behind.Libby completed an accomplished half century off 101 balls with seven fours, and new batter Nathan Smith survived a chance at first slip off Paul Coughlin when on 11.Libby’s determined knocked ended on 61 after a rare misjudgment when he shouldered arms and was bowled by Coughlin. Josh Baker then tried to duck out of the way of a Bas de Leede bouncer but the ball rebounded off his helmet onto his stumps.Joe Leach departed to a superb one-handed catch by Bedingham away to his right at midwicket off Potts, who wrapped up the innings when Adam Finch was lbw aiming to leg.Smith was left unbeaten on 33 and then made the first breakthrough with the ball when Durham began batting for a second time after lunch. Alex Lees played back and only succeeded in steering Smith to Holder at second slip.Leach swapped to the Railway End after an initial four-over burst and disposed of Colin Ackermann, who nicked through to Gareth Roderick. But Durham captain Borthwick and Bedingham settled in and experienced few alarms in building towards a substantial lead.Bedingham was the more fluent, scoring at around a run a ball for long periods, but it was Borthwick who was first to his half-century off 89 balls with five boundaries. Two straight sixes in quick succession by Bedingham off Leach helped him to complete a 55-ball fifty and he accelerated to three figures with spinner Baker conceding successive maximums. It needed a run-out to end the partnership when Borthwick failed to beat Smith’s throw to the non-striker’s end from deep midwicket attempting a second run.Paul Coughlin feathered Finch through to Roderick attempting a square cut and Bedingham’s superb knock eventually ended on 138 when he sliced Smith on the off side and Adam Hose took an excellent catch on the cover boundary.
