Stronger than McGinn: Aston Villa racing Real Madrid to sign "superb" teen

Having joined Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, Aston Villa have now reportedly joined the Spanish giants in pursuit of a 17-year-old midfielder who’s already featured on Europe’s biggest stage.

Aston Villa set to battle Real Madrid for teenage midfielder

It wasn’t too long ago that goal-line technology was playing a part in Aston Villa’s Premier League survival. Five years on from that controversial moment, however, they’re no longer simply maintaining their top flight status, they’re also keeping hold of their place in the Champions League after thrashing Club Brugge in the last 16.

Setting up a mouth-watering tie, the Villans will now square off against one of Unai Emery’s former clubs in Paris Saint-Germain, before facing Arsenal or Real Madrid if they defy the odds by defeating the French champions.

Away from the action, meanwhile, those in the Midlands are also set to do battle against some of Europe’s best. According to The Boot Room, Aston Villa are now racing Real Madrid to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi from LOSC Lille this summer.

Aston Villa's "world-class" star is already becoming Emery's new Duran

Aston Villa may have already found their next Duran with this “world-class” ace

1 ByConnor Holden Mar 14, 2025

The central midfielder is still just 17 years old, but was handed a start against Borussia Dortmund in Lille’s last 16 second-leg. Ultimately, the teenager found himself on the losing side, but the fact that he was given the nod at such a young age highlights just how talented he is.

That talent was always going to attract the likes of Madrid and Aston Villa though, potentially leaving Bouaddi with a decision to make this summer. Whether that ends in a trip to the Midlands remains to be seen, however.

"Immense" Bouaddi would be an upgrade on McGinn

At just 17 years old, Bouaddi is one of Europe’s most promising stars and could emerge to already offer Emery an upgrade on John McGinn. Off the ball, the young Frenchman is particularly impressive, using his 6’1 frame to his advantage whilst also showing off his technical ability in possession – something Villa would have seen for themselves after sending their scouts.

Whilst it’s difficult to upgrade on the energy McGinn provides Villa, Bouaddi can do exactly that, winning more duels and tackles at a higher success rate, and should only get even stronger as edges closer and closer to the peak of his powers.

Described as a “superb” player and one with “immense physical potential” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Aston Villa should sign Bouaddi before his price skyrockets beyond their range.

Up against Real Madrid in the race to sign the French sensation, those in the Midlands can use the lure of the Premier League and Emery’s project in an attempt to land an impressive coup this summer.

IPL playoffs: RCB, MI and Royals in race for final spot

Mumbai must win, RCB have the advantage of playing last, and Royals can only wait in hope

Only one of MI or RCB will make the playoffs, while Royals could benefit if both lose their final games•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

With Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants advancing to the playoffs with wins in their last league matches, only one spot remains to be taken. Three teams have a chance to grab that final place in the playoffs. Here’s what the result in the remaining two games of the league will mean for the teams who are still in the fray.Matches to be played
Mumbai Indians v Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai, 3:30pm
Royal Challengers Bengaluru v Gujarat Titans, Bengaluru, 7:30pmMumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore both win Both Mumbai and RCB will move to 16 points, but this scenario will be stacked in favour of RCB who have the better NRR of the two. Even if RCB win by the barest margin of one run, Mumbai are required to thrash Sunrisers by at least 79 runs to finish ahead of Royal Challengers. Even if Mumbai win by a margin bigger than 79 runs, RCB will have the advantage of knowing exactly what they would need to qualify because they are playing the last game. Only one of Mumbai or Royal Challengers winWhichever team wins, moves to 16 points and makes it to the playoffs. RCB losing to Titans is the best case scenario for Mumbai to qualify with a win. Both MI and RCB loseThis is the outcome Rajasthan Royals will be hoping for, for it would give them a realistic chance of qualifying. If this happens, all three teams – Mumbai, RCB and Royals – will be tied on 14 points. Mumbai will be knocked out on account of their poor NRR.It will come down to NRR between RCB and Royals and here’s what Royals would need from Titans. If RCB bat first and score 180, Royals need Titans to chase down the target in 19.3 overs or before. If RCB field first and concede 180, Royals need Titans to restrict RCB to 174 or less.If the margins of RCB’s loss are tighter than that, then they will go through with a better NRR.No result in the Mumbai-SRH gameIn this event RCB will qualify if they win, otherwise Mumbai will go through to the playoffs.

Tottenham open initial talks to sign £100m ace after claim he wants to join

Tottenham Hotspur have entered into preliminary negotiations to sign a marquee player, after claims that he’s actually very keen on joining Spurs this summer.

Tottenham set for intriguing summer after disastrous campaign

Ange Postecoglou’s job is hanging by a thread, amid credible reports that his long-term future is now in “serious doubt” (The Athletic), with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Fulham boss Marco Silva under consideration to replace him.

Spurs sit 14th in the Premier League table after losing 15 top flight matches already, and Postecoglou has been dealt a plethora of injuries to key players throughout 2024/2025, which has undoubtedly crippled their form.

Postecoglou has been tipped for the Tottenham sack for months, but now his potential dismissal is beginning to gain traction among big-name media outlets, so the prospect of yet another new manager coming to north London is getting more and more real.

However, the 59-year-old may not be Spurs’ only casualty, as protests currently surround ENIC and chairman Daniel Levy’s running of the club following their 17-year wait for a piece of major silverware.

Technical director Johan Lange has also come under some scrutiny since taking the reins as Tottenham’s transfer chief, with some reports even suggesting that Spurs have held talks over re-hiring former managing director Fabio Paratici.

The Italian’s 30-month worldwide ban from footballing activity is due to end on June 30th, and if Paratici does make a return to N17 in an official capacity, perhaps one of his first orders of business could be striking a deal for highly-rated Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling.

He is attracting interest from Spurs amid an impressive breakout campaign at St. Mary’s, and with the Saints a certainty for relegation, clubs could look to poach the 19-year-old ahead of next season.

As per GiveMeSport, the Lilywhites believe that Dibling is “sold” on the idea of joining Tottenham, and a new update has now come to light from Football Insider.

Tottenham hold preliminary talks to sign Tyler Dibling

According to the outlet, Tottenham have held initial talks to sign Dibling from Southampton, and as things stand, Postecoglou’s side are in pole position to secure his services after making a head start.

However, while Southampton will struggle to keep hold of the teenager, they don’t plan on letting him go on the cheap. It is even believed that Southampton could demand as much as £100 million for Dibling, as they look to ward off the growing list of suitors.

Southampton'sTylerDiblingcelebrates scoring their third goal

A figure like this is of course extortionate, but a more realistic price tag could get Spurs thinking, as he is currently one of the Premier League’s most exciting young players.

Dibling has been a regular for Southampton, playing a variety of forward roles both out wide and through the middle, and he’s even drawn comparisons with Man City star and former Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.

50% price drop: Aston Villa seriously interested in "world-class" £34m star

Aston Villa are seriously interested in a move for a “world-class” player this summer, and he is now set to be available for half the original asking price, according to a report.

Villa targeting big-name signings

Villa have started to reestablish themselves as one of Europe’s top clubs, having progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals, which means they should be in a strong position to attract some big-name signings from across the continent this summer.

Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, who scored a hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final, has now emerged as a target, with the Villans keen on signing the £54m-rated forward, while they are also pushing to sign Barcelona’s Ferran Torres.

It seems as though strengthening in attack may be one of Unai Emery’s priorities this summer, amid other links to Chelsea’s Joao Felix, who is currently on loan at AC Milan, and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

While bringing in new attacking options is of key significance, with Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford also in line for potential permanent moves to Villa Park, a new report suggests Emery is also keen on bolstering his options at the opposite end of the pitch.

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are now strongly considering a move for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan this summer, with the goalkeeper set to be available for 50% of the original asking price.

AC Milan's MikeMaignan, Luka Jovic and Yunus Musah

Maignan was valued at around £67m last summer, but if he is unwilling to sign a new contract, he is set to be on the market for roughly half that figure, around £34m.

The Serie A side may be forced to cash-in on some key players if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, and the 29-year-old could be in line for a move to Villa Park, but there may be competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Maignan ranked among "world's best" keepers

Just under two years ago, the Frenchman was lauded as the “world’s best” goalkeeper by football writer Carlo Garganese, and he has a plethora of experience at the top level, having made 32 appearances in the Champions League.

That said, there are doubts over whether the Cayenne-born goalkeeper would be a necessary addition for Villa, given that he is less than three years younger than Emiliano Martínez, who has also proven himself to be a top goalkeeper.

Moreover, while the “world-class” France international remains his country’s first-choice goalkeeper, mistakes have started to creep into his game this season, which be a major concern for Emery.

As such, there is little reason to risk upsetting the apple cart by bringing in Maignan to replace Martinez this summer, and Villa would be better off investing the money into other areas of the squad, such as striker, with a replacement needed for Jhon Duran.

Berta must axe 4/10 Arsenal flop who earns a lot more than Nwaneri

Since taking charge of Arsenal in December 2019, Mikel Arteta has dramatically altered the club’s trajectory.

The Gunners are now a team who regularly challenge for the Premier League and have made the Champions League quarter-finals for the second year in a row.

While the Spaniard’s philosophy and tactics have played a significant role in the club’s rapid rise, his signings have been just as effective.

However, the team does look like it’ll need a minor overhaul this summer to keep it competitive, meaning incoming Sporting Director Andrea Berta will need to move several players, including one who did not impress last night and earns significantly more than Ethan Nwaneri.

The Arsenal players who should be moved on

So, with an incredibly important summer of reshaping the team to finally get over the line to come, we’ll start with the players who are almost certainly set to leave due to their contracts expiring at the end of the campaign.

Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s deals expire on June 30th, and while they could likely still contribute to the side next year, reports suggesting they’ll stay are few and far between.

Similarly, Raheem Sterling and Neto’s loan deals will run out at the end of May, and while there is a slim chance the latter could join for free, the former has proven beyond all doubt that he no longer has what’s required to play for a title-chasing side.

Kieran Tierney has already agreed a pre-contract with Celtic, and while the player he started in place of last night, Leandro Trossard, still has another year on his deal, it might be time for the club to cash in on the supposed interest in him from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in September.

The Belgian has been rather underwhelming this term, racking up a tally of just 13 goal involvements in 42 appearances, although at least he’s getting regular game time, unlike Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Ukrainian international was a key part of the club’s initial title charge in the 22/23 campaign, but with him earning £150k-per-week and barely featuring this term, it might be time to move him on in the summer, even if he did well against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.

Finally, another player who should be sold as soon as possible was one of the rare starters last night, but unlike Zinchenko, he did not make a case for his further inclusion.

The Arsenal ace who should be sold

Unfortunately, a few starters from last night’s clash didn’t step up to the plate, such as Jorginho, but in this instance, we are talking about Jakub Kiwior.

The Polish international, who joined the club from Sepzia in January 2023 for around £20m, was defensively shoddy, poor with the ball at his feet and earned a dismal but fair 4/10 match rating from GOAL’s Sean Walsh.

However, while his performance against PSV was disappointing, the argument for selling him goes beyond that, as even though the club has endured plenty of injuries this season, he’s started just nine games all.

Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly are ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back, and when Takehiro Tomiyasu recovers from his surgery, we imagine he will be too.

It’s the same story at centre-back, with the Italian, Dutchman, Japanese international and Ben White all likely ahead of him without even getting to the Gunners’ regular starting pair of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

If the 25-year-old defender, whom content creator Phil Costa branded “not good enough,” was earning a minuscule wage to sit on the bench and only make an occasional start, his presence in the squad wouldn’t be an issue.

However, while he isn’t one of the big earners, he’s still making £58k-per-week, which is way more than the likes of Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly, who are already contributing to the first team in a significant way.

Ultimately, while Kiwior isn’t a bad footballer, he’s not of the standard required to be an Arsenal player, and with the summer a chance to add some world-class talent to the team, Berta and Co should look to move him on.

Blistering Bell-Drummond fires Kent to sixth straight win

A brilliant 111 from Daniel Bell-Drummond and a Grant Stewart hat-trick helped the Kent Spitfires to an emphatic 55-run win over Middlesex in the Vitality Blast at Canterbury.Bell-Drummond’s joyous innings lasted 58 balls and included four sixes as for the second consecutive evening Middlesex shipped way in excess of 200. Kent posted 228 for 3, but having stunned Surrey with a Blast-record run chase the previous evening, this time Middlesex subsided to 173 all out, with George Linde and Joey Evison also claiming three wickets apiece. Luke Hollman was the visitors’ top scorer with 48 from 20 balls, but the required rate became unmanageable and they were all out with an over to spare. The Spitfire Ground was sold out on a sweltering Friday night, with over 5,000 packed in to watch the hosts, resurgent after five consecutive wins, take on a Middlesex side who were still bottom of the South Group, despite Thursday night’s miracle. An early chance went begging when Tawanda Muyeye, who was on 8, holed out to Toby Greatwood, only for Hollman to miss an over-the-shoulder catch. Muyeye smote the next ball for six and the openers put on a stand of 127 before he was bowled by Josh de Caires for 50.Related

The run-rate slowed slightly and Joe Denly was on 12 when Martin Andersson missed a difficult chance to catch him off Hollman, but it picked up again as Bell-Drummond reached his second Blast century with a classic cover drive for four off Greatwood and when Ryan Higgins’ 17th over only went for three it felt like a minor triumph for the visitors.Bell-Drummond was one short of his best Blast score when he hoicked Max Harris to Jack Davies at square leg and he departed to a standing ovation.Denly went for 30 driving Higgins to Andersson at long on but Sam Billings smashed 22 off the final over, meaning Middlesex had conceded exactly the same number of runs they did a week ago when Kent won the reverse fixture at Lord’s.

Hopes of a second miracle in 24 hours dimmed when the first three overs went for just six and Joe Cracknell swept Linde to Bell-Drummond in the fourth. Although Max Holden initially carried on where he had left off against Surrey, with 10 off his first two balls, he was bowled for 11, playing on to Evison.Linde then took two wickets in the eighth over: Higgins played on to the first ball before John Simpson fell to a diving catch by Evison on the boundary. Stephen Eskinazi went for 32, flicking Evison to Grant Stewart and Davies rattled off a quick 24 before he was lbw to the same bowler.Hollman and de Caires went down fighting, plundering 23 from Michael Hogan’s 14th over and putting on 60 for the seventh wicket, but a nightmarish 16th over for Stewart ended with Hollman caught in the deep by Jordan Cox off the tenth and final delivery. At the start of his next over Stewart had de Caires caught on the boundary by Jack Leaning and the bowler’s redemption was complete when Harris was taken just inside the rope by Cox.The rout was sealed when Greatwood chipped Agar to Evison and Kent, having seemed dead and buried little more than a fortnight ago, stand every chance of reaching the knock-out stages.
