Ange can forget about Kulusevski by unleashing "incredible" Spurs star

After succumbing to their first Premier League defeat since January last time out, Tottenham Hotspur return to Europa League action tonight.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have endured a torrid year on the domestic front this season, but they have looked far more dangerous in European competition.

The North Londoners finished the league stage of the competition in fourth place, with five wins, two draws and just a single defeat to their name, allowing them to bypass the play-off round altogether.

However, things can never be easy for the Lilywhites, as they will have to take on AZ Alkmaar without the sensational Dejan Kulusevski – although Ange may have just the solution within his squad.

Why Kulusevski can't play against AZ Alkmaar

He has had impressive campaigns in the past, but it would probably be fair to describe this season as Kulusevski’s best in a Spurs shirt.

Despite moving between playing on the wing and in the middle of the park, the Swedish international has remained remarkably effective for much of the year.

In just 42 appearances, totalling 3054 minutes, the Stockholm-born dynamo has scored ten goals and provided ten assists.

That means the former Juventus ace has averaged a goal involvement every 2.1 games, or every 152.7 minutes, so the news that he’s now out injured is a real problem.

When speaking to the press yesterday afternoon, Postecoglou confirmed that the 24-year-old had a “knock on the foot” and that while it’s “nothing serious” he is “unlikely to be back before the international break.”

It’s not an ideal situation ahead of a crucial knockout game, but fortunately, there is an incredibly talented player within the squad who should be able to cover for his output in the middle of the park.

The Spurs star who can cover for Kulusevski

For once, it feels as if Postecoglu has a few options for how to cover for an injured player, but to ensure his side remain a serious attacking threat, there is only one answer: James Maddison.

Behind the former Juve star, there is a strong argument that the Englishman is the squad’s most creative and dangerous midfielder, so keeping him in the lineup in light of the news around the Swede makes perfect sense to us.

Moreover, while the former Leicester City star can run hot and cold at times, he’s actually been reasonably effective this season.

In his 34 appearances so far, totalling just 2039 minutes, the “incredible” ace, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored ten goals and provided seven assists.

That means he’s currently averaging a goal involvement every other game, or every 119.94 minutes, which is actually quite a bit better than Kulusevski.

On top of that, FBref has placed him in the top 1% of Premier League midfielders for actual and expected non-penalty goals, the top 5% for assists and progressive passes, the top 3% for shot-creating actions and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, not having Kulusevski fit for selection is undoubtedly an issue, but in Maddison, Spurs have an incredibly dynamic midfielder who can come in and make up for his absence.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs Barcelona: Champions League winners: Super-subs Beth Mead & Stina Blackstenius combine as Gunners produce defensive masterclass to claim European glory

The only English side to win the trophy lifted it for the second time on Saturday, stunning the Catalans for a first continental triumph in 18 years

Arsenal stunned Barcelona in the Women's Champions League final on Saturday to win the competition for the first time since 2007. It was the Gunners' first appearance in the showpiece game since that triumph some 18 years ago, one of several facts that made them underdogs against a Barca side that has lifted this trophy three times in the past four seasons. However, Arsenal snatched it from them in Lisbon, as super-sub Stina Blackstenius scored the only goal in a monumental 1-0 win.

It was always going to be a game about defensive focus and constant concentration for the English side, with the Catalans so dominant on the ball and boasting incredible strength in depth that few sides in the world can compete with. But Arsenal did well to enjoy good spells of their own and actually had the better of the chances in the first half, with an own goal by Irene Paredes ruled out for offside before Frida Maanum forced Cata Coll into a strong fingertip save.

Barca weren't at the races in that first 45 minutes and it felt inevitable that they would improve after the break – but the Gunners stood tall despite that happening and limited their opponents to very few clear-cut opportunities. Indeed, Daphne van Domselaar only had one save of note to make, to deny Aitana Bonmati from range, as most other efforts flew off target or comfortably into her arms. Instead, the two biggest chances of the game would fall to the Gunners and, specifically, Blackstenius. She couldn't put the first away, denied by Coll's legs, but she made no mistake when Beth Mead cleverly picked her out just three minutes later, finishing ruthlessly to make Arsenal, against all odds, the champions of Europe.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Daphne van Domselaar (6/10):

Was unconvincing with how she dealt with several crosses, but fortunately not in a way that cost her team. Made a great save to deny Bonmati in the second half.

    Emily Fox (8/10):

Supported the attack brilliantly, allowing Arsenal to have a lot of joy down the right, and also defended heroically.

    Leah Williamson (8/10):

Was absolutely immense all evening, with a superb tackle to thwart Pajor in the box in the first half one of her stand-out moments.

    Steph Catley (7/10):

Defended stoutly. Often stepped out and made some good passes to kickstart attacks, too.

    Katie McCabe (7/10):

Didn't gallop forward as readily as usual, instead sticking to the task of limiting the impact Graham Hansen could make, which she did well.

    Midfield

    Kim Little (8/10):

Did a lot of good work off the ball and was tidy in possession when she had it.

    Mariona Caldentey (7/10):

Surprisingly poor on the ball on a few occasions, giving Barca the ball in good areas, but improved as the game went on. Used her experience well once Arsenal went ahead.

    Frida Maanum (6/10):

Was one of Arsenal's liveliest players in the first half, forcing a great save out of Coll. Quieter after the break, though.

    Attack

    Chloe Kelly (6/10):

Relatively quiet in attack, and quite loose in possession at times, but worked hard and did a lot of good stuff off the ball.

    Alessia Russo (7/10):

Held the ball up well and created a couple of openings off the back of doing so.

    Caitlin Foord (8/10):

Honoured her defensive duties brilliantly while also providing an effective outlet to get Arsenal up the pitch amid spells of pressure.

    Beth Mead (8/10):

Provided a sublime disguised pass for Blackstenius' goal.

    Lina Hurtig (N/A):

Made her final Arsenal appearance in the last few minutes.

Added more solidity to the back line in stoppage-time.

Set her team up brilliantly and made her changes at the perfect time, with Mead and Blackstenius then combining for the match-winning goal. What an incredible job she has done since taking over in October.

Rishabh Pant's replacement: Delhi Capitals set to sign Abishek Porel

Porel was part of a group of uncapped Indian wicketkeepers who underwent trials with the franchise over the past week

Shashank Kishore29-Mar-2023Delhi Capitals are set to sign Bengal’s Abishek Porel as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant ahead of IPL 2023. Porel’s signing, which is yet to be announced officially, comes following a series of practice games at a week-long preparatory camp in New Delhi.Porel and three other uncapped wicketkeepers – Sheldon Jackson, Luvnith Sisodia and Vivek Singh – had been put through a series of match simulation exercises, apart from being monitored by the Capitals coaching group, headed by director of cricket Sourav Ganguly and head coach Ricky Ponting, over the past week.Capitals’ punt on Porel comes on the back of his first full season with Bengal in domestic cricket, where he impressed with his glove work but failed to make big scores across formats.Related

Delhi Capitals have firepower despite Pant's absence, but who will keep wicket?

His three outings in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy brought him 22 runs, with one of those knocks being an unbeaten 20. He has slightly better returns in first-class cricket, having managed six half-centuries across 26 innings with a best of 73.Sarfaraz Khan still Delhi Capitals’ front-runner?Porel could yet be a back-up wicketkeeping option with the franchise keen on trialling Sarfaraz Khan in the role. Sarfaraz has been in prime form with the bat over the past three domestic seasons. In fact, he’s one of only two players to have scored over 900 runs in two consecutive Ranji Trophy seasons (2019-20 and 2021-22). This time around, he managed 556 runs in six innings.Sarfaraz, who played a clutch knock to deliver Mumbai the title in the Syed Mushtaq Ali final last November, was picked up for his base price of INR 20 lakh last year. He featured in six games in IPL 2022, batting in the lower middle order for 91 runs with a best of 36 not out. With Pant unavailable – he’s recovering from injuries sustained in a serious car crash in December – the team management had sounded out Sarfaraz as early as January to be ready for the wicketkeeper’s role. It’s a role he’d carried out for Mumbai at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s.Phil Salt also in the runningThe only other wicketkeeping option Capitals had was England’s Phil Salt, who was signed for his base price of INR 2 crore at this year’s auction. Salt is coming off a “frustrating time” in Bangladesh during the white-ball series. However, he comes with the experience of having played 180 T20s that have brought him 4118 runs at a strike rate of 149.79, much of it in the top order. With Capitals’ top-three set to be David Warner, Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh, it’s likely they may find it hard to fit Salt in in his preferred position (11 of his 15 T20I innings have come at Nos. 1-3), and this could play to Sarfaraz’s advantage.Capitals begin their campaign on April 1 in an away fixture against Lucknow Super Giants.

The Independent states that United have made advances on Semenyo, but the possibility of the £60 million-rated ($79.9m) forward arriving this summer may hinge on winning the Europa League and selling some players. Conversely, the report adds that Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap could be signed if they win the competition or not, with the 22-year-old having a £30m ($40m) relegation release clause.

This is part of United's wider transfer plan, which includes trying to sign Wolves' Matheus Cunha for around £60m and attempting to sell struggling attackers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. The report adds that both men, who have a combined Premier League goal tally of seven this season, are on the market – with Juventus being linked with Hojlund and Inter Milan eyeing a loan move for Zirkzee. The fact that the Red Devils may cash in on the duo, who cost £108m ($143.7m) in total, after a combined three years at Old Trafford is telling.

Leicester City now eyeing Europa League striker with 10 goals this season

Leicester City have been scouting an “impressive” young striker over the past few weeks, but there may be competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, according to a report.

Foxes hoping to avoid the drop

With a third of the Premier League season left to play, Leicester find themselves in a very precarious position, currently sitting two points from safety, having been on a torrid run of form since the end of 2024.

The Foxes have lost nine of their last ten league matches, most recently succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at home to title-hopefuls Arsenal, and they are now at serious risk of an immediate return to the Championship.

It can be difficult for clubs to plan for the summer when the division they will be in next season is still up in the air, but Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side have been linked with a couple of forwards over the past week.

Should the east Midlands outfit formalise their interest this summer, there may be competition for his signature from Crystal Palace, who are also keen, while Bayer Leverkusen and Torino have previously been named as potential suitors.

Dju impressing in Denmark

The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in the Danish Superliga last season, providing 11 goals and six assists, and he has since gone on to follow it up with another impressive campaign.

The Guinea-Bissau international has made 26 appearances in all competitions, amassing 10 goals, with one of those coming in the Europa League against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Although the forward is not currently plying his trade in one of Europe’s major leagues, it is still impressive he has emerged as a key player for Midtjylland at such a young age, having previously received praise from the media for his performances at youth level.

As such, Leicester should undoubtedly pursue a move for the starlet this summer, but their chances of winning the race for his signature are likely to hinge upon them retaining their Premier League status.

Man City now racing to sign "amazing" £50m+ UCL ace who could replace Silva

With Bernardo Silva reportedly heading for the exit door, Manchester City have reportedly joined the race to sign a potential replacement worth over £50m this summer.

Man City transfer news

It looks set to be a hectic summer at the Etihad, with several stars making way for a new era at Manchester City, who have felt the full effect of an ageing squad this season. Following a campaign full of repeated injury problems, the deal seems to be that if you can’t stay fit then you’re unlikely to stay at the club this summer, as Pep Guardiola looks to rebuild.

Among those on the list of potential departures is Portuguese midfielder Silva, who has reportedly already agreed personal terms with French giants Paris Saint-Germain. And whilst Manchester City and PSG are yet to reach an agreement over a transfer fee, Silva certainly looks destined to depart.

Not many will argue against his exit now that he’s 30 years old, but that doesn’t mean that the Citizens shouldn’t aim to find a replacement and they seem to be well aware of that.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 5, 2025

According to The Boot Room, Manchester City are now racing to sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, who value their midfielder at more than £50m this summer following a rejuvenated spell in the Midlands.

With Arsenal also linked with a move for the Aston Villa graduate in recent months, Manchester City will hope that the lure of playing under Guardiola works wonders once again and they instantly find their replacement for Silva.

"Amazing" Ramsey could replace Silva

Replacing Silva will be one of the toughest tasks in the Premier League – whether Manchester City choose to do so this summer or in years to come. The 30-year-old has been at the heart of history as one of Guardiola’s most consistent players no matter which role he has been deployed in. All good things must come to an end, however, and Ramsey could yet receive a career-defining call.

The 23-year-old has been back to his best at Villa Park this season after struggling with injury problems and could now find himself on his way to one of Europe’s best.

Although it’s clear that Ramsey still has another level to reach in possession, his work off the ball highlights exactly what Silva has lacked towards what looks like the end of his Manchester City career.

Dubbed “amazing” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, if Guardiola wants to re-energise his midfield then Ramsey should certainly be on Manchester City’s summer wishlist. At just 23 years old too, the Villa graduate is a player destined to get better and better.

Crystal Palace eyeing summer move to sign £13m ace who could replace Hughes

With Will Hughes still on course to leave as a free agent this summer, Crystal Palace have reportedly turned their attention towards a young midfielder who could replace the former Watford man.

Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles have been back to their best under Oliver Glasner in recent months and even find themselves in an FA Cup quarter-final as a result. One game away from Wembley and two games away from the chance to end Palace’s search for their first major honour since 1994, Glasner is moving closer and closer to history at Selhurst Park.

Despite that potential history, it seems as though not everyone is keen to stick around. Now in March, Hughes is yet to sign a new contract in South London and remains on course to bow out at Selhurst Park when the summer arrives – leaving a gaping hole in Glasner’s side in doing so.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 6, 2025

Planning for the worst, the Eagles have had no choice but to turn towards potential replacements. According to Africa Foot, Crystal Palace are now eyeing a move to sign Mahamadou Doumbia from Royal Antwerp alongside Sevilla this summer.

The Belgian reportedly value their midfielder at as high as €15m (£13m) ahead of the summer transfer window, as they look to at least from selling their 20-year-old.

Yet to reach the peak of his powers, Doumbia could prove to be a worthwhile investment for just £13m, especially given how he’s risen to become a key starter at Royal Antwerp this season. With both Palace and Sevilla interested, the midfielder could have quite the decision to make this summer.

"Perfect" Doumbia is a rising star

Like Hughes, Doumbia’s work is rarely seen in the spotlight. Instead, the midfielder is one of Royal Antwerpt’s “unsung heroes”, according to U23 scout Antonio Mango, who believes that the Belgian club are moulding the “perfect midfielder” in the 20-year-old.

Whether Doumbia is “perfect” enough to replace Hughes can only be answered in one way, but whether Palace turn towards the midfielder in the face of the 29-year-old’s potential exit remains to be seen.

After rising through the ranks at JMG Bamako before joining Nordsjaelland on loan to earn the interest of Antwerp, Doumbia could complete the biggest move of his career so far by swapping Belgium for the Premier League this summer.

Glasner’s Palace has been a land of opportunity for the likes of Justin Devenny to begin making their mark and many more could yet follow that path into first-team stardom.
