Sheffield United plot double deal to sign "brilliant" ace and 6-goal winger

Already planning for life in the Premier League, Sheffield United are now reportedly plotting a double summer swoop to sign two young Liverpool players who have impressed on loan in the Championship.

Sheffield United transfer news

As things stand, the Blades are on course for yet another promotion to the Premier League under Chris Wilder and remain in control of their own fate after easing past Middlesbrough to win 3-1 last time out.

With just three points between themselves and a strong Burnley side in third, Sheffield United won’t be getting ahead of themselves anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be at least planning ahead.

The last time that the Blades were in the top-flight, of course, they crashed and burned to suffer instant relegation back down to the Championship. Since then, the Premier League hasn’t got any easier and if Wilder’s side are to earn promotion again, they must be better prepared.

With that said, those at Bramall Lane are already reportedly setting their sights on summer reinforcements they could bring with them to England’s top tier.

Sheffield United now plotting move to sign "immense" Championship rival

He’s in impressive form…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 13, 2025

According to Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, Sheffield United now want to sign both Lewis Koumas and Owen Beck from Liverpool this summer if they earn promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Liverpool duo have both enjoyed impressive seasons in the Championship, with Wales international Koumas on loan at Stoke City and Beck on loan at Blackburn Rovers. Yet, Anfield may not await. Instead, if Sheffield United come swooping in, they could be reunited at Bramall Lane sooner rather than later.

Two rising stars, the Blades would be wise to make their moves as soon as possible before their respective price tags increase or potential loan interest arrives from elsewhere.

Koumas and Beck both on the rise

Beck, 22 years old, and Koumas, just 19 years old, have both stood out at times on loan. The former has consistently played a part in a Blackburn Rovers side aiming for a play-off place by the end of the campaign – starting 20 of 32 games at left-back. Meanwhile, the younger Koumas has stolen the headlines more than once – scoring six goals in all competitions from the left-hand side.

Both have enjoyed their fair share of praise too, with former Blackburn boss John Eustace telling reporters when asked about Beck earlier this season: “Owen was exceptional, that is why he’s here.

Owen Beck in a press conference on international duty.

“He’s a very young, talented player. He’s got other good young players around but also experience around him too. They want to help him and they’re always talking to him. He’s had a brilliant game against a couple of really tricky wingers today for Swansea. He dealt with them very well.”

The only factor that Sheffield United may need to get past is the price tag of both players. Whether Liverpool will be willing to sell their two academy products at a feasible price remains to be seen this summer, which could force the Blades to settle for loan deals.

Women's regional team to be called 'The Blaze' following move to Trent Bridge from Loughborough

East Midlands set-up moves to Test ground after severing ties with Loughborough University

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2022The women’s regional team previously known as Loughborough Lightning has been rebranded as “The Blaze”, following the decision to cut ties with Loughborough University and base the set-up at Nottinghamshire’s home ground of Trent Bridge instead. The decision, which was confirmed by the ECB in September, means that the East Midlands teams for the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Cup will be able to train alongside the Nottinghamshire’s men’s squads during the English season, and benefit from Trent Bridge’s facilities – a situation that mirrors the set-ups for the Nottingham-based Trent Rockets in the Hundred.”There is definitely an extra bit of excitement that comes with training, and being based at, Trent Bridge,” fast bowler Sophie Munro said.”There is a sense of a fresh start, being somewhere new, wearing new kit and having a new name, but we’ve got a good bond as a group having been together for a while, and that has made the transition pretty straightforward.”Whilst we have some hard work still to do over the winter, we’re intent on starting positively when the season does arrive.”The Blaze name itself was a popular choice among the squad, right from when we first found out that the move to Nottingham was on the cards.”It’s great that we, as players, were consulted on it, and that we can represent a brand which, from the start of the process, we helped to establish.”Matches during the two regional competitions will also be played at the other first-class venues in the East Midlands – namely Grace Road in Leicestershire and Derbyshire’s County Ground, while the National County, Lincolnshire, is also represented as part of the region.”We’re really aware of the iconic nature of this stadium and we are inspired by everything it offers,” The Blaze’s Director of Cricket, James Cutt, said.”We see it as our new home, and it’s really beneficial for us being able to interact with the Nottinghamshire players, coaches and support staff – and hopefully the way we do things can have an impact on the men’s game as well.”Everybody at the venue has been really welcoming towards us and really inclusive, the training spaces are of a high quality and the pure cricket nature of the venue is something that our squads are absolutely buying into.”We want to produce cricketers locally from across the East Midlands region and we want to attract players to come and represent The Blaze from elsewhere in the country as well. We believe that being at Trent Bridge can only help both of those facets to develop.”

WBBL: Burns, Ecclestone's stunning knocks take Sixers closer towards final

Sydney Sixers were on the verge of securing a spot in the WBBL final after Erin Burns and Sophie Ecclestone lifted them to an amazing five-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat.In reply to Heat’s 163 for 5 in Wednesday night’s top-of-the-table clash at North Sydney Oval, Sixers were in all sorts of trouble at 72 for 5 after 12 overs. With them needing 92 off 48 balls, Burns (51 not out off 32 balls) and Ecclestone (47 not out off 25 balls) whacked the Heat attack to all areas of the park to seal a famous victory with three balls to spare. The result extended Sixers’ lead at the top of the table to three points over the second-placed Heat, who have only one match remaining. It means only the third-placed Hobart Hurricanes can still catch Sixers.Hurricanes must win their remaining two games and hope the Sixers lose both of theirs in order to snatch the top spot. Whoever finishes on top secures a direct berth in the final. It marks a remarkable turnaround for the Sixers, who collected the wooden spoon last season despite boasting a star-studded squad. Wednesday’s result proved the fighting spirit within the side.Sixers needed 12 runs off the final over and Ecclestone did the job by smacking Nicola Hancock for a six, a four and a two.”I’m absolutely buzzing,” Burns, who played a crucial role in getting the team over the line in her 100th WBBL match to continue an outstanding season in the middle order, said. “I’m just so stoked we got over the line as a team. It’s always been a battle against Heat.”You kind of dream of these moments to be able to get your team home. I’m not necessarily the one that got us home – Eccy [Ecclestone] bombing sixes and fours towards the back-end was beautiful to watch.”The match was also memorable for Sixers pacer Kate Peterson, bowling in a game for just the third time this season, who snared 4 for 17 off four overs.Heat had themselves recovered from 101 for 5 with Jess Jonassen hitting 38 off 21 balls in a sixth-wicket stand of 62 in 29 deliveries with Amelia Kerr.

Simmons quits as West Indies coach after 'unfathomable' World Cup exit

Phil Simmons has resigned as West Indies coach after his team crashed out in the first round of the T20 World Cup in Australia, an outcome he described as “unfathomable”.West Indies were eliminated after finishing bottom of their group in Hobart, beating Zimbabwe in their second game but losing to Scotland and Ireland either side.”I acknowledge that it’s not just the team that is hurting but the proud nations we represent as well,” Simmons said in a statement released by CWI on Monday night. “It’s disappointing and heart-wrenching but we just didn’t turn up.”We weren’t good enough and we now have to watch a tournament play-out without our involvement. It’s unfathomable and for that I deeply apologise to our fans and followers.”Related

Simmons’ second spell in the job started in October 2019, after an initial 18-month tenure in which he helped steer West Indies to the 2016 T20 World Cup, uniting a squad of big personalities and encouraging a pioneering batting approach focused on six-hitting.The Test team’s results have gradually improved during that time, with series wins over England and Bangladesh earlier this year. Simmons will remain in charge for the upcoming two-Test series against Australia, which starts on November 30 at Optus Stadium in Perth. He said that he would also participate in CWI’s postmortem into the World Cup exit.Simmons added that he had been considering his position before the tournament. “From a personal perspective this is not a knee-jerk reaction, but a move I have been considering for some time, he said. “Now is the time to make public that I will step down as West Indies head coach at the end of the Test series against Australia.”It is earlier than hoped for, but I will now focus my energies in Australia on continuing to build on the excellent progress the Test team has made. Of course, as the president has pointed out, we will also carry out the necessary review into our World Cup campaign.”I must say I have enjoyed aspects of the unique challenge that being West Indies head coach provides and the unwavering support of my management team. There remain some exceptional individuals within CWI who I firmly believe will continue to work in the best interests of West Indies cricket.”Ricky Skerritt, the president of CWI, said: “On behalf of CWI, I want to thank Phil for his hard work and dedication to West Indies cricket, most recently in his role as head coach. He’s outscoring Watkins: Aston Villa could have Rashford 2.0 out on loan

Aston Villa’s inconsistent Premier League form continues.

On Saturday, the Claret and Blue Army were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by bottom three dwellers Ipswich, despite the fact the Tractor Boys were reduced to ten men on the cusp of half time; Axel Tuanzebe dismissed against his former club.

That means Unai Emery’s team have failed to win any of their last four in the Premier League, slipping down to ninth, thereby finding themselves below the European positions, ahead of Wednesday’s mouthwatering meeting with current runaway league leaders Liverpool at Villa Park.

Before that clash, it’s time to analyse the Villans’ current attacking options, assessing how a youngster, currently out on loan, could make a big impact.

Aston Villa's attacking options

Villa’s attacking options saw a major overhaul during the January transfer window, most notably the fact that Jhon Durán departed, joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for a reported fee of £71m.

Meanwhile, despite interest from Arsenal, Ollie Watkins remained a Villa player, later joined by Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, the duo arriving on loan from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, while £23m was spent to bring in Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.

Rashford, in particular, has caught the eye during his two substitute appearances so far, creating more ‘big chances’ last weekend than any other Premier League player, despite only being introduced at halftime.

So, with the arriving trio and Watkins, as well as Jacob Ramsey, Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers, who Jonathan Wilson of the Guardian described as an ‘incredible talent’, Emery certainly has some talented attackers at his disposal.

However, could the best of the lot currently be out on loan, starring in the EFL, ready to shine in the Villa first team in the near future?

Aston Villa's future superstar

Back in January, after being recalled from his loan spell at Stockport County, Lyall Thomas and Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports reported that Emery was planning to ‘assess’ youngster Louie Barry in training, before making a concrete decision over his future.

Well, he was then loaned out again, this time to Hull City, but this does not mean the young forward doesn’t have a future at Villa Park.

Still only 21-years-old, Barry has already had a noteworthy career. He first made headlines by joining Barcelona’s fabled la Masia academy from West Bromwich Albion in 2019, but returned to England a year later, signing for Villa for a reported £880k.

He was then in the spotlight again in January 2021; with the entire Villa first team and coaching staff in isolation following a Covid-19 outbreak, the U23s were tasked with facing Premier League champions Liverpool in an FA Cup tie, with Barry equalising for the youngsters on the cusp of half time, an amazing moment, even if the Reds ultimately prevailed 4-1 in the end.

Barry has subsequently been sent out on multiple loans by Villa, appearing for Ipswich, Swindon, Milton Keynes, Salford and Stockport, starring for the Hatters earlier this season, scoring 15 goals in just 24 appearances, named EFL League One player of the month in both August and November, as Dave Challinor’s side chase back-to-back promotions.

He’s been so impressive that Barry was recalled from his loan spell at Edgeley, his final appearance for Stockport coming against Villa’s fierce rivals Birmingham City on New Year’s Day, this not a coincidence, waving farewell following a 1-1 draw.

Daniel Storey of the i Paper noted that he was Barcelona’s ‘first English prodigy’, with Barry himself stating “I loved my time in Barcelona… but I decided to come back close to home [when] we had got wind that Covid-19 might be a big thing.”

He’s yet to get off the mark for the Tigers, making three appearances for Hull to date, including in Rubén Sellés’ starting lineup for the very first time against Norwich on Saturday.

So, let’s see how he compares to two of Villa’s most high-profile current forwards, namely Watkins and Rashford.

As the table outlines, Barry shares some of the best attributes with both Watkins and Rashford, while mirroring the latter in his ability to operate off the left flank or in a more central role.

Like Watkins – who has netted 12 times – he is a clinical finisher, scoring 16 goals so far this season, while over 50% of his shots hit the target, currently ranked first in EFL League One this season for shots on target per-90 (1.86), despite having not played in that division since 1 January.

Meantime, he is also a supreme dribbler, similar to prime Rashford, having been successful with 50% of his take-ons, albeit his assists and shot-creating action statistics are significantly lagging behind the other two.

Nevertheless, all the signs are there that Barry – who was hailed for having “incredible” composure by Declan Rice – will be a top-class forward in the future, so he is one that Villa supporters should remain excited about.

Moyes already has his answer to Fellows in Everton's £50k-p/w "talent"

Everton strengthened David Moyes’ squad on transfer deadline day after making one new signing, their only addition of the window. The Toffees signed versatile attacking player Carlos Alcaraz, who has previously had a stint at Southampton, which included a goal away to Arsenal.

The Argentine, who can play as a number ten or even as a false nine, joined on loan from Brazilian club Flamengo on a loan deal until the end of the season.

His quality in the final third and Premier League experience will certainly help the Toffees in their quest for survival. They are currently 16th with 26 points to their name, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Carlos Alcaraz

Moyes’ side missed out on another attacking reinforcement on deadline day after reports suggested that they tried to sign Tom Fellows.

Why Everton wanted Tom Fellows

The Merseysiders had reportedly sent off a £15m bid to sign West Bromwich Albion winger Fellows, a player who has been a long-term target.

However, TEAMTalk claim that no bid was actually submitted, due to the signing of Alcaraz and the fact the Baggies did not want to sell their star man so late on in the window. They may, however, revise their interest in the summer.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

Regardless of whether they did or did not submit an offer for the 21-year-old wide player, there is no doubt what he would have added to the Toffees squad. Fellows is an assist king, and has ten assists in 30 Championship appearances this season, along with two goals.

The winger, who was born in Solihull, has consistently contributed to goals in 2024/25, including two assists against Stoke City at the start of the campaign, in a 2-1 away win. His longest run without a goal involvement was eight games between October and November. That consistency could have served Everton well.

It was certainly a shame for Moyes’ side to miss out on signing the England under-21 international, or, at the very least, perhaps surprising that they did not end up lodging a bid for him.

However, this may be a blessing in disguise to one member of the Toffees squad, who might have an opportunity to show what he can do under Moyes.

Everton's in-house Fellows alternative

Perhaps the Merseysiders missing out on signing Fellows will benefit Jesper Lindstrom for the rest of the season. It has not been an easy start to life for the summer signing, who joined on loan from Napoli with an option to buy him.

Everton winger Jesper Lindstrom

He has played 22 times for the club so far but has yet to manage a goal or assist across all competitions. The Denmark international has played for 1029 minutes in total, the equivalent of 11 full 90-minute games.

So, with that in mind, it might be surprising that missing out on someone as prolific as Fellows opens the door for Lindstrom. However, the £50k-per-week star has shown how good he can be at former club Eintracht Frankfurt.

There, the Dane found the back of the net 14 times and assisted 14 times in 80 games, over the span of three seasons. In the 2022/23 campaign, he scored and assisted 11 goals in 27 Bundesliga games.

Moyes has taken charge of four games for Everton since his return, and Lindstrom has started three. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but they have won all three of the games the 24-year-old has featured in from the start.

The winger, who was described as “a talent” by football scout Antonio Mango, could certainly have a role to play under Moyes. He has already shown his value to the side, given his involvement from the start in the last three games.

Not signing Fellows was a blow for the Toffees, but perhaps the in-house solution of Lindstrom could be the way forward for Everton, especially if he can begin scoring and creating.

AC Milan manager Sergio Conceição praised Santiago Giménez’s impact off the bench after the Mexican striker helped spark Milan’s 2-1 comeback win over Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Monday.

"Even in the most difficult moments, he's one of the first to arrive at Milanello. He has the quality. It's just a matter of time. Adapting to Italy is not easy for anyone," said Conceição.

Giménez came on in the second half and provided an assist just six minutes later, setting up Rafael Leão’s equalizer. The Portuguese striker completed the turnaround, keeping the Rossoneri in ninth place with 57 points—six behind the European qualification spots—with 35 Serie A matchdays played.

In a clash featuring two Mexican players, Johan Vásquez started for Genoa and played the full 90 minutes, while Giménez changed the course of the match with his key contribution.

After another game coming off the bench, the former Cruz Azul player spoke about his performance against Genoa, where his assist to Leão brought Milan level at 1-1:

"I feel really good physically", Giménez said to DAZN. "I train at my best to then show it on the pitch. I truly believe that how you train is how you perform in the game. I'm feeling really good. I know my strengths and always try to make them available to the team. I feel comfortable when I have to attack the space in depth."

Regarding facing fellow countryman Johan Vásquez, Santiago added:

"He’s a great friend, and I’m very happy with the great work he’s done in Serie A. He’s an important reference for Genoa, and we couldn’t wait to play against him today."

A few days ago, Giménez spoke about the “Breakfast Club,” a training routine he started during his time at Feyenoord, which involves arriving at the club hours before breakfast to do extra workouts.

“At first, when we created this Breakfast Club, there were only two or three of us. By the time I left, it was almost the whole team coming in early to train before breakfast,” the striker explained.

Currently, he admits he’s “alone” at Milan in following this early routine, but he hopes others will join over time:

“For now, I’m alone at Milan, but little by little I’ll attract someone else,” he told .

Leeds keeping an eye on £20k-p/w ace who will be a free agent in the summer

Leeds United are keeping a close eye on a “beautiful” £20,000-a-week player ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

Leeds transfer news

Daniel Farke’s side have been one of, if not the strongest teams in the Championship this season, and if they continue their current form, they should once again be a Premier League team come the end of the campaign.

Leeds now planning to open talks over signing of £60k-p/w star

The Whites already have one transfer in mind that they would like to complete in the summer, but it may come at a cost.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 16, 2025

There looks to be an expectation that they will be in the English top flight next season, as the players they are hoping to sign in the summer are not players looking to drop into the second tier.

The Whites are interested in signing Manchester City midfielder James McAtee and have held internal talks over a possible move in the summer, as he continues to struggle to nail down a starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s team.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

As well as looking to find a number 10, Farke and the Leeds board are also looking at improving their defence for the next season. It’s been reported that they are interested in signing Koni de Winter from Genoa but face strong competition from West Ham, Wolves and Serie A giants Juventus.

De Winter is not their only option for a new centre-back, as Conor Coady of Leicester City is also a player Leeds may consider signing, as he struggles for game time at the King Power Stadium and will enter the final 12 months of his contract in the summer.

Leeds keeping an eye on Walker-Peters

Farke doesn’t just want to add a new centre-back to his ranks – he also wants to improve his full-back options, and according to TEAMtalk, Leeds are keeping an eye on Kyle Walker-Peters, who is out of contract at Southampton in the summer.

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters

The Whites were interested in signing the full-back during the January transfer window, but the Saints wanted £7 million to part ways, and that was deemed too high for someone set to become available for free so soon.

Indeed, Walker-Peters looks unlikely to sign a new contract at St. Mary’s Stadium and, therefore, will be a free agent come July – that has alerted Leeds, as well as teams such as Leicester City and Everton.

Walker-Peters, who earns £20,000 a week at Southampton, has been with the Saints since January 2020, having joined them initially on loan from Tottenham before joining on a permanent basis. The 27-year-old has been an ever-present for the Saints since and has established himself as a very attacking, modern-day full-back.

The Southampton defender has shown great versatility in recent seasons, operating on both the right and left-hand sides of defence, as well as playing as a wing-back if it is required. Former Southampton manager Russell Martin described Walker-Peters as a “beautiful” footballer, and given the pace he offers and his ability to take players on, it doesn’t come as a surprise.

All these factors are why Farke would love to make him part of his Leeds team, as he would bring real quality and Premier League experience to their backline; Leeds just need to get promoted to the top flight now to make the deal happen.
