Anya Shrubsole takes three as Southern Brave defend modest total to move top of table

Anya Shrubsole took three wickets as Southern Brave beat bottom-placed Welsh Fire by 14 runs in a rain-impacted match to move top of the Women’s Hundred table at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.Sophia Dunkley made an impressive 49 before skipper Shrubsole took 3 for 20 as the visitors ripped through a dismal Fire batting line-up who were bowled out for 108 and never looked like chasing down the total after openers Tammy Beaumont and Hayley Matthews were removed. The Fire initially struggled on a wet outfield, unable to back-up their impressive bowling which featured six wicket takers, as they dropped five catches which proved costly as Brave posted 122 for 8.Amanda-Jade Wellington, the leading wicket-taker in the competition, moved her tally to eight after picking up 1 for 21 and Lauren Bell and Georgia Adams, who scored a quick-fire unbeaten 25 with the bat, also bowled superbly to take two wickets apiece.Brave had got off to a quick start with the bat before Fire removed Smriti Mandhana for 13 and Dani Wyatt for 16 to prevent the Southampton-based side from posting a fourth 50-run opening partnership in as many matches.Alex Hartley, in particular, was excellent in the middle period and finished with 1 for 12 from her 20 balls to prevent Brave’s acceleration as key wickets fell at fairly consistent intervals. Fire would have been looking at a much smaller chase if it wasn’t for poor fielding that included a couple of simple chances, one of which was knocked over the boundary rope for six by Annabel Sutherland.Dunkley was put down on 12 before going on to top-score with a composed 49 from 43 and Adams, who was also dropped late on, played well for her 16-ball knock at the back end of the innings. In reply and with Rachael Haynes out ill, Fire were even more reliant on Matthews and skipper Beaumont, but she was caught off the bowling of Bell for 9 on the ninth ball of the innings and Matthews struggled to get going before being caught at slip for a run-a-ball 20 off the in-form Wellington.Brave used the drying pitch effectively to continue to pick up consistent wickets throughout. When Shrubsole had Sutherland caught behind for 22 to leave Fire 67 for 5 and requiring 56 more, the result felt inevitable. Shrubsole and Adams tore through the tail and got home comfortably despite a late attack from Sarah Bryce, who made 28 before being run out on the penultimate ball to leave Fire 108 all out.Fire sit bottom and are still winless from their three matches, whilst Brave took their fourth win from four to leapfrog Birmingham Phoenix at the top before Phoenix play on Tuesday, against Oval Invincibles.

England legend believes Gareth Southgate deserves credit for laying foundations for Thomas Tuchel to lead Three Lions towards World Cup glory in 2026

Ex-England keeper David James believes Gareth Southgate has "laid the groundwork" for Thomas Tuchel to lead the Three Lions to World Cup glory.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Liverpool stopper James believes Southgate deserves a lot of credit for getting England to a position where they are competing for the biggest international competitions. He added that the Englishman, and the Football Association, put in place strong "foundations" for Tuchel to be successful in the role, but if the German wins the World Cup "all the talk" will be about him.

    WHAT DAVID JAMES SAID

He told Prime Casino: "The amount of times I've had these conversations with England, players generally love playing for their country. Ultimately, like club football, you can only determine whether it's good or bad if you win something or in the Premier League if you qualify for the Champions League or something like that. I think the thing with Gareth with many people… It seems quite binary. You either like him or you don't, or you think he's done well or you don't. I don't think there's too many middle ground people I've spoken to.

"The way that opinion has either changed or reinforced is on how Thomas Tuchel does. If Thomas was to go on and be successful, win the World Cup, then all of a sudden Gareth wasn't good enough because we should have won the World Cup before. If Thomas doesn't, then Gareth was great because Thomas couldn't do it. I think that's kind of… Everyone's on pause.

"I think he laid the groundwork, the foundations or the FA as well, to make England competitive and virtue of a couple of moments, which ultimately most sport is decided by, we're talking about an England side that still haven't won anything since ‘66. However, I think there's a belief we as fans expect realistically, rather than just expect because we had good players. As I say, if Thomas, and I like what he's done already in the first couple of games, if Thomas is to be successful, then there won't be too much talk about Gareth, naturally, because all the talk will be about Thomas Tuchel and what he's achieved."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Southgate resigned as England boss last summer, after their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, before Tuchel replaced him a few months later. Southgate was England's most successful manager in decades after leading them to two Euros finals and the World Cup semi-finals but Tuchel has been tasked with getting the Three Lions over the line at next year's World Cup.

A dream for Salah & Diaz: Liverpool make bid for exciting young attacker

Away from the one loss next to their name this season in the Premier League, Liverpool have been near faultless in the top-flight under Arne Slot.

Indeed, the high-flying Reds sit at the very top of the division with a hefty 56 points accumulated from 23 games as both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest desperately attempt to catch up on 47 points each.

If all goes to plan from this point onwards, Slot’s men should cruise to a title success during their new manager’s very successful first campaign, with the Dutchman now looking ahead to the future – away from any silverware to come – with a new transfer target.

Liverpool submit offer for teenage star

As per the Daily Express, Liverpool have now submitted an offer to sign Red Star Belgrade starlet Andrija Maksimovic.

Aston Villa are also named as another interested party looking at the Serbian teenager, with Maksimovic’s agent Zoran Stojadinovic further elaborating that the attacking midfielder could go for a fee around the £17m mark.

Whilst this wouldn’t be a purchase for the here and now, this would still be an exciting pick up for the Reds to get done, with the 17-year-old a gung-ho style attacking midfielder that would slot into the free-flowing Liverpool side nicely alongside both Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz.

What Maksimovic could offer Liverpool

Already capped four times at a senior level for his nation, Maksimovic could well make this next big step in his career look effortless as well.

After all, the teen has played in seven Champions League clashes this season and not look fazed whatsoever by the glitz and glamour, with plenty of goals and assists coming his way in both the youth set-up at Red Star and in the first-team fold.

Amazingly, a sublime free-kick effort earlier in the campaign was Maksimovic’s first-ever senior strike for Red Star, with the promising Reds target now up to three goals and four assists overall for his Serbian employers from 23 clashes.

Maksimovic’s youth numbers for Red Star further reinforce why his price tag stands at such a steep £17m, with the 6-foot gem helping himself to a ridiculous 31 goals from 33 appearances, before then becoming a consistent starter up an age bracket.

Therefore, he could fit in superbly alongside both Salah and Diaz. The pair of them have been exceptional this term but this move could gift Slot’s men even more firepower, as the table-toppers are somewhat reliant on the dazzling magic of the Egyptian or Diaz as a lone striker.

Staggeringly, Salah has a combined goal and assist haul in the Premier League alone of 34, whilst Diaz also comes in at double digits at ten.

Looking at the table above, the goals and assists are spread out across the squad quite evenly, but there is a slight lack of contributions coming from the middle of the park with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai only on five for the campaign.

The Hungarian midfielder played in the number ten role last time out versus AFC Bournemouth, despite often being launched into clashes in a far deeper spot, with there a need perhaps for Slot to have more personnel to throw into games behind the lone striker.

Mohamed Salah celebrates with Luis Diaz

That’s where Maksimovic could come in handy to help out Salah and Diaz, with Liverpool also gaining another top youngster in the process who could be used as an impact face like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones.

After all, Liverpool don’t need whole host of instant improvements this January, with this signing one that could go on to be an inspired purchase if everything goes to plan down the line.

Tottenham exploring move for £80k-p/w ace they’ve wanted since Kane left

Tottenham are now exploring a move to sign a new forward for Ange Postecoglou as they try to land a target they have been keen on since the Australian’s arrival in north London, according to a fresh report.

Tottenham transfer latest

Despite a wretched Premier League campaign to date, Tottenham have been quiet so far this winter. As it stands, they have only signed goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky for the first team.

That is something of a shock given their injury crisis and form, which have coincided to leave them 15th in the Premier League following their latest defeat to Leicester City, and while the Lilywhites have been linked with plenty of players they are yet to truly burst into life in the window.

One of those that they are very keen to sign is Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, who has impressed on the south coast even as his side look on course for relegation, a fate which the most pessimistic fans in north London fear that Spurs might share, such is their form.

Spurs are very keen.

However, any deal in January was always unlikely given Southampton’s predicament, and the same can be said for Angel Gomes, who is another player that Tottenham hold an interest in for the summer when he is due to become a free agent.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Swedish side Elfsborg, Postecoglou admitted that no deal was close for further reinforcements, but that the club remain on the lookout for opportunities in the final days of the transfer window.

“I’d be disingenuous if I said anything other than fight now there’s nothing imminent but that doesn’t mean there isn’t opportunity being explored. Traditionally the last few days of any window tend to be pretty frenetic. I expect us to be involved in that”, he told the media.

Now, such an opportunity may be on the cards as Spurs look to land a long-term target.

Tottenham exploring move for wantaway Bayern gem

That comes in the form of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, who is now set to leave the Bavarian giants in the final days of the transfer window in search of more game time.

The Frenchman is very highly rated, with former France U21 coach Thierry Henry dubbing him an “extraordinary” talent after working with him. However, he has failed to feature in any of Bayern’s last three games and has now decided to leave the club before the window slams shut.

Tel still has four and a half years left on his £80,000 a week deal in Bavaria, and as a result a loan is possible as well as a potential permanent deal.

Mathys Tel for Bayern Munich

He has plenty of suitors, with Chelsea having pushed to sign him in recent weeks, but a fresh report from The Daily Mail claims that the Blues are not seen as an attractive option due to the number of players already competing for roles in their frontline.

Instead, it is now claimed that Spurs “now registered their interest in Tel” and are “exploring” a move to sign him before Monday alongside north London rivals Arsenal.

Tel has been a long-term target for the Lilywhites, and they asked about the Frenchman back in 2023 when they sold Kane to the German giants, but got no further. Now, in a poetic twist of fate, Kane’s form could help his former side land the Frenchman 18 months on.

Sheffield United must rue selling flop who’s outperforming Hamer & Brereton

Unlike a transfer-shy Leeds United who occupy top spot in the Championship standings, Sheffield United showed that they mean business this transfer window with a whole host of new additions entering the building.

Chris Wilder will hope the mammoth seven new additions that arrived through the door during the frantic window can help his team push the Whites all the way to the second-tier title, with an instant return to the Premier League the obvious goal for the South Yorkshire outfit come the end of the gruelling campaign.

Chris Wilder

He will already like what he saw from fresh recruit Ben Brereton Diaz last time out against Derby County, as the Chilean reopened his account for the club in the tight contest at Pride Park.

Brereton Diaz's return to United

Of course, whilst Brereton Diaz is a new signing per se, he has called Bramall Lane home before during a previous stint in the Premier League.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers man ended up being a much-needed bright spark during the Blades’ woes in the top-flight last campaign, with an impressive goal haul of six strikes from 14 games, all whilst his loan team finished rock bottom of the division.

He will hope he can be equally as impactful this time around, but with the end-goal of the South Yorkshire outfit rising back up to the Premier League secured, with this simple tap-in gifting his side a 1-0 win away at the Rams.

Wilder won’t just rely on the goalscoring heroics of the 25-year-old, however, to give his high-flying team a fighting chance at an instant promotion, with Gustavo Hamer another standout individual that is capable of taking the Championship by storm at the peak of his powers.

Indeed, the ex-Coventry man has a sterling 11 goal contributions next to his name this season from 27 league games, but has unfortunately battled with some worrying injury concerns to find himself out of Wilder’s XI from time to time.

Whilst Wilder will still be pleased with what he has at his disposal – especially after a jam-packed window – there is one former Blades flop that is starring away from South Yorkshire that might fill the 57-year-old with some feelings of regret.

The United flop now outperforming Brereton & Hamer

The forgotten United face in question here is Benie Traore, who was chucked into the deep end of the English game when signing for the relegation-doomed side in 2023.

The unknown Ivorian would relocate to the Premier League strugglers off the back of a promising spell in Sweden with BK Häcken where Traore would twist and turn Allsvenskan defences for fun, leading to the 22-year-old winger picking up 25 goals and nine assists from 58 total contests.

Unfortunately for Häcken’s “jewel” – as he was once labelled by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – he would never settle into his new English surroundings, despite displaying flashes of excellence such as this sublime solo strike in the U21 ranks.

From nine largely unmemorable senior appearances for the Blades, Traore would fail to pick up a single goal or assist, before then being offloaded last summer by Wilder to FC Basel.

He has since managed to shrug off the tag of being a failed experiment in Yorkshire though, with a stunning 11 goal contributions managed in league action for Basel seeing him match Hamer’s glittering Championship numbers.

Taking into account his further two assists in Cup action and the one-time Blades flop is actually bettering Hamer’s output, alongside also blowing Brereton Diaz’s numbers out of the water, who only has a solitary strike for both United and the Saints this season.

Whilst there will be a bad taste in the mouth now over how Traore’s time at the club ended, sometimes players just suit certain clubs over others, with the Ivorian going down as an unlucky transfer blunder.

Sky Sports: Club in talks to sign £75k-p/w Aston Villa player open to exit

A big European club have held talks to sign a £75,000-a-week Aston Villa player before the transfer window closes, according to a Sky Sports journalist.

Aston Villa transfer news

It has been a busy month for the Midlands side, as they have already added Donyell Malen to their squad in a £21 million deal from Borussia Dortmund. The forward was followed by Andres Garcia, who joined from Levante, and Diego Carlos has left Villa Park in recent days to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

PSG ready to offer £236k-per-week forward in bid for Aston Villa star Duran

The Ligue 1 champions are determined to strike a late-window deal.

Jan 26, 2025

Villa’s transfer business doesn’t look to be stopping there, as Unai Emery has admitted that he is open to doing more business before the deadline. Emery said: “We are open to trying to improve the squad until the last moment, and as well, we are open in case someone is leaving.

Of course, Diego Carlos left in the last week, and we have to replace him, and, of course, we are as well focusing on which players could be potential players to replace Diego Carlos.”

However, Villa’s end of the window could be focused on the future of striker Jhon Duran, as West Ham have already seen a bid worth £57 million, including add-ons, rejected. Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr are emerging as very serious contenders, as they are apparently considering a winter bid. Meanwhile, PSG are ready to offer Marco Asensio in exchange for Duran, as they are only willing to offer £59 million to sign the Colombian international.

Big club hold talks to sign £75K-p/w Aston Villa ace

Duran may not be the only Villa player to be the subject of transfer interest as the January transfer deadline approaches, as according to Sky Sports German reporter Florian Plettenberg, Bayer Leverkusen are working on a transfer to sign Emiliano Buendia from Aston Villa.

Plettenberg reports that talks were held on Saturday, but as of yet, Villa and Leverkusen are yet to reach an agreement. Buendia, who has fallen down the pecking order at Villa Park, is high on Leverkusen’s list of transfers this month. He goes on to add that the midfielder is “open” to joining Xabi Alonso’s side, but there is still more to do for a deal to be completed.

Since then, David Ornstein has revealed that Buendia and Villa have now actually agreed terms over a new deal until 2026, with the club not planning to sanction a permanent exit.

Buendia, who earns £75,000 a week at Villa Park, has been with the Midlands side since July 2021, and while he was a regular in the side in the last two campaigns, so far this season, he has fallen very much out of favour.

The Argentina international has started just three games in all competitions, his last being in the defeat to AS Monaco last week. Given his situation, it is no surprise to see Buendia being linked with a move away this month, but Leverkusen are not the only side interested, as Leeds United have also been credited with a move for Buendia, as Daniel Farke has worked with the midfielder before at Norwich City.
