Tournament hosts Zimbabwe and reigning tournament champions Netherlands continued their undefeated runs at the T20 World Cup Qualifier in Bulawayo, both sides winning their respective semifinals on Friday to clinch the final two available berths at the T20 World Cup in Australia this October. It will be Zimbabwe’s sixth trip to the T20 World Cup and their first since 2016, while Netherlands make their fifth appearance in the T20 World Cup.Zimbabwe and Netherlands will face off on Sunday in the final of the T20 World Cup Qualifier to determine the final group assignments for the opening round in Australia. The winner of the final will spend the opening round in Hobart in Group B, with Ireland, Scotland and West Indies. The loser of the final will head to Geelong, where they will be paired against Namibia, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates.Zimbabwe’s 27-run victory over Papua New Guinea at Queen’s Sports Club was a consummate team effort as they compiled a first-innings total of 199 after choosing to bat first, despite nobody making more than Wessly Madhevere’s 42 off 29 balls. But the rest of the top six batters scored at least 22, including 38 off 30 from captain Craig Ervine.PNG’s reply got off to a disastrous start when Lega Siaka was run out by Sean Williams off the first ball of the chase and they slipped to 34 for 3 inside of five overs. But Tony Ura’s superlative tournament continued with a 22-ball half-century to keep PNG in the hunt for a second straight trip to the T20 World Cup. However, he slowed down considerably afterward before a heave across the line resulted in him being bowled by Williams for 66 off 35 balls making the score 139 for 5 after 15. PNG needed 61 off the final 30 balls, but with Ura gone lacked the firepower to get within striking distance before eventually ending on 172 for 8.File photo – Bas de Leede picked up two wickets, took a catch, effected a run-out, and scored an unbeaten 67-ball 91•Getty Images

Bas de Leede put in an all-time great performance in the annals of Dutch cricket history to see the Netherlands past USA by seven wickets with an over to spare in their semifinal at Bulawayo Athletic Club. USA were 51 for 0 after five overs after choosing to bat, but de Leede’s spell of medium-pace helped turn the tide as he took 2 for 23 in three overs while also taking a catch and effecting a run-out to help bowl USA out for 138 in 19.4 overs.Paul van Meekeren made the first breakthrough to end USA’s opening stand by getting Steven Taylor to chip a full ball to Max O’Dowd at midwicket for 26 off the first ball of the sixth over. USA captain Monank Patel then fell to a half-tracker from legspinner Shariz Ahmad, picking out Logan van Been at deep midwicket for 32 off 15 balls to make it 68 for 2. It opened the door for de Leede to pounce with a tremendous athletic diving effort off his own bowling to bounce out the dangerous Gajanand Singh for a second-ball duck, then later cleaned up Marty Kain with a slower-ball yorker for a golden duck. Nisarg Patel tried to stretch out the USA innings with 28 off 23 balls at No. 8 before de Leede ran him out with a sharp relay from deep midwicket to deny a second run.USA held a brief glimmer of hope in the first over of the Dutch reply when Saurabh Netravalkar induced a chipped catch by Stephan Myburgh to extra-cover for a third-ball duck. de Leede entered at No. 3 and, after negotiating a tricky next few overs, opened up against Netravalkar in the fifth, driving him inside-out over-extra cover for six. He cleared the rope twice more off Rusty Theron in the following over to take the Netherlands to 53 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.Netherlands suffered two more hiccups just after, when Max O’Dowd fell for 16 in the seventh over, driving a low return catch to Nisarg’s left-arm spin before Tom Cooper flicked Cameron Stevenson’s medium-pace to Jaskaran Malhotra at deep midwicket to make it 62 for 3 after eight. But captain Scott Edwards arrived and rotated the strike well to keep the required run rate comfortable. De Leede brought up his fifty off 33 balls with a single in the 10th.The pair finally put the game out of USA’s reach by attacking the part-time legspin of Aaron Jones in the 12th over. A day after Jones conceded 26 runs off the final over of the first innings to Zimbabwe, including three sixes to Sikandar Raza, USA captain Monank tossed him the ball only to see Edwards sweep him repeatedly in a 12-run over that took the required run rate under a run a ball for the rest of the chase. A single off the final ball of the 19th by de Leede secured victory.

KL Rahul tests positive for Covid-19, likely to miss T20Is against West Indies

Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has received a green signal from the NCA after recovering from a hand injury

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jul-2022Already in a race to prove his fitness ahead of the West Indies T20Is in the Caribbean and USA, KL Rahul endured another setback when he tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday. The news was confirmed by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly after an apex council meeting in Mumbai.Rahul had been recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru following a surgery for sports hernia in Germany last month and his inclusion in the T20I squad against West Indies was subject to fitness. He had steadily amped up his batting time at the nets over the past week before testing positive. This is likely to leave Rahul with a small window to pass his fitness test and retain a negative before taking the flight to the Caribbean. With the T20Is set to begin in Trinidad on July 29, it is likely Rahul will miss the series.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands Rahul is now in line to make his international return in Zimbabwe in August, should he pass his post-Covid recovery. India are set to play three ODIs on August 18, 20 and 22 in Harare, and the series will be part of the ODI Super League.Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has received a green signal from the NCA after recovering from a hand injury. The selection committee is likely to take a final call over his participation at the earliest. As such, his inclusion in India’s T20I squad was also subject to a fitness test.Kuldeep had been recovering from a hairline fracture on his right wrist that forced him out of the South Africa T20Is at home. The injury also ruled him out of the white-ball tours of Ireland and England. Kuldeep last played in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, for whom he picked up 21 wickets in 14 matches.

Leeds beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship on Tuesday evening but two goals scored by Daniel Farke's side were incorrectly ruled out for offside. Daniel James scored early on and Ao Tanaka and Patrick Bamford followed up by hitting the back of the net as well, although both goals were wrongly disallowed.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Clattenburg, a former top referee who has officiated the finals of the Champions League and the European Championships, believes both decisions are "unforgivable" and insists it is yet more evidence that VAR must be introduced in the second-tier.

  • WHAT MARK CLATTENBURG SAID

Clattenburg said, per Leeds-Live: "The two incorrect offside decisions are unforgivable. The same Assistant Referee has made earlier errors in the season and one would question how he is still operating at the top tier of the Football League.

"I am sure PGMOL and his coaches will be looking at this and trying to improve his future performances. The cry for VAR will rumble on in the Championship.

"They have goal-line technology and maybe the next step is to have offside covered by the technology which are still factual decisions but wrong decisions can have a massive impact on a club."

Newcastle make £50m+ bid and activate release clause for "fantastic" star

Newcastle United have now made a £50m+ bid and activated the release clause to sign a “fantastic” midfielder, according to a report.

Newcastle eyeing signings in all areas

The Magpies are not short on transfer targets in several key positions, with Burnley’s James Trafford, who caught the eye by saving two penalties against Sunderland on Friday night, among the main targets between the sticks.

Earlier in the January transfer window, Eddie Howe’s side were positioning themselves to sign Abdukodir Khusanov, but the Uzbekistani defender has now completed a move to Manchester City.

As such, Newcastle may have a look at some other centre-backs on the shortlist, including AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori or Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, having conducted scouting missions to assess the 21-year-old.

Newcastle eyeing up £30m star who would be devastating with Isak & Gordon

Newcastle are aiming to add attacking reinforcements this month, so could the Magpies look north of the boarder to bring in an outstanding new winger?

ByBen Gray Jan 20, 2025

Moving into more attacking areas, Howe remains interested in a new striker, given that Alexander Isak is attracting the attention of some top clubs, and PAOK’s Stefanos Tzimas has recently emerged as a potential signing.

Whether Isak remains at St. James’ Park or not, Howe will be keen to have a quality midfielder providing service to his striker next season, which is why the Magpies have now made their first concrete move to sign Villarreal’s Alex Baena.

According to reports from Spain, Newcastle have now made a €60m (£50.7m) offer for Baena, activating his release clause, but there is set to be stiff competition for his signature.

The attacking midfielder is one of the most sought-after young players in Europe, with Nottingham Forest and Bayern Munich also making their interest clear and doing the same as the Magpies.

The report states the 23-year-old could become a key player for Howe’s side in the coming years, as they seek to establish themselves as a top Premier League club.

Baena impressing in La Liga

The Spaniard has caught the eye with his performances in La Liga, and for good reason, having contributed two goals and 14 assists in 34 appearances for Villarreal last season.

With four goals and five assists this term, the attacker, who can also play on both wings, is on course to have another fantastic season, so this could be a very good piece of business for Newcastle. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig was also full of praise for the Spain international back in September.

As such, it is exciting news that Newcastle have reportedly activated Baena’s release clause, but it may be difficult to win the race for his signature if Bayern step up their interest, considering the German side are almost guaranteed to have Champions League football on offer next season.

Full Members concerned over idea of nine overseas players per XI in UAE league

The ICC, which officially sanctioned the league, says there is no “hard cap” on the number of foreign players in a side

Nagraj Gollapudi and Osman Samiuddin05-Aug-2022The potential presence of nine overseas players per team in the UAE-based ILT20 has ruffled the feathers of several Full Members, who fear it has the potential to disrupt global cricket’s ecosystem.Their concerns were raised at the recent ICC AGM in Birmingham, but have acquired urgency since it became clear the amount of money that was on offer for foreign players in the league, and its direct clash with leagues in South Africa, Australia and Bangladesh and the bilateral international cricket calendar. The ICC, which provided official sanction to the league, says the ILT20 fulfilled all criteria to gain that sanction and that there is no “hard cap” on the number of foreign players in a side within the existing regulations.Related

UAE T20 league set for clash of dates with BBL, BPL, CSA league

Manchester United owners acquire team in UAE T20 League

The issue was the subject of a long discussion at the chief executives’ committee (CEC) meeting in Birmingham, during the ICC AGM in the last week of July. It was on the agenda, prompted by a letter the PCB had written about the proliferation of T20 leagues and the impact on the international calendar. That turned into a more specific discussion around the impact of a league made up mostly of foreign players, such as the ILT20 intends to be. Several officials present at the meeting confirmed that Cricket South Africa (CSA), CA, the ECB and CWI joined in to express their concerns. CWI, heavily impacted by the presence of West Indian players in leagues across the world for a number of years now, has been ringing the alarms on this for a long time now.”[The view of these boards] is that there should be some regulation or guidelines regarding a minimum number of local players that must be in each team and play in each match,” one board CEO told ESPNcricinfo. On hand at the CEC to speak to those concerns was Mubashir Usmani, general secretary at the Emirates Cricket Board, and the league’s operational front man. Usmani is a CEC member as a representative for Associates. According to one account, he turned the question about the number of overseas players on its head asking why four overseas players – and not one or two – had become a norm among most leagues in the first place, arguing it was an arbitrary number.Usmani is also believed to have ensured that unlike other Full Member leagues, the ILT20 would play all centrally-contracted UAE cricketers in its franchises. To questions about the lack of focus on local development implied by a league that is privately-owned and populated largely by foreign players, Usmani is said to have made the point that all T20 leagues are created primarily for commercial reasons. ESPNcricinfo contacted Usmani to verify the account, but he did not respond. Those present at the CEC, however, confirmed the nature of the discussions. The ILT20 is not owned by the Emirates Cricket Board but sanctioned by them; it is owned in a private capacity by Khalid Al Zarooni, the Emirates board’s vice-chairman. Al Zarooni is also a director of the Al Zarooni Group of Companies, one of the largest construction companies in Dubai. An ILT20 official told ESPNcricinfo that despite this, the league plans to pump money back into UAE cricket, through development programmes for men’s and women’s cricket. There are plans for those franchises owned by IPL owners to bring IPL coaches in for these programmes and talent hunts.Three of the league’s six franchises are owned by IPL owners – Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders – and one by the Glazers of Manchester United. Each team has an 18-member squad in which up to 12 can be from overseas. At least three must be UAE players, two from other Associates and one Under-23 UAE player. Each playing XI can have a maximum of nine overseas players with at least one UAE and one other Associate player.Several boards are concerned T20 leagues around the year will affect top players’ workload•PCBFranchises are offering top players up to US$ 450,000 a season, making it the second-most lucrative league after the IPL. And though there were initial plans to recruit players through a hybrid auction and draft – the AUDRA – process, the bulk are now being acquired directly. Franchises can negotiate terms directly with up to six overseas players though that may increase to between eight and 10 in the next few days, such is the rush to sign up players. The money on offer has forced leading players to seriously consider the offer which has, in turn, caused headaches for members who are concerned at the potential flight of their elite talent. That situation has been crystallised by the David Warner situation but is impacting other boards as well – not least because the first edition is scheduled between January 6 and February 12 next year which means it clashes directly with the CSA league as well as the second half of the BBL.Because of the discontent, focus has fallen on the official approval of the league. As it is being organised in an Associate member country, it falls to the ICC to give it final approval – rather than a Full Member board (were a league to be played there). That approval came not long before the ICC AGM.Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s chief executive officer told ESPNcricinfo that the league had “complied” with all the necessary regulations and fulfilled all criteria.”We get sanctioning requests from members of the ICC,” Allardice said. “If a board wants to work with an organisation that promotes the league or to private team owners, then that’s the structure, and that’s the structure which they choose to operate. That’s not unusual.”We assessed it under the regulations. We sent it to our departments for feedback. They were satisfied that the application complied with the regulations. And we sanctioned it.”There is no “hard cap” on the number of overseas players in the regulations as they stand. In the April ICC meetings, amendments to the regulations were approved, which now required ICC sanctioning of an event in the territory of an Associate Member in addition to the member board sanctioning, and which involve more than four current or former players from Full Members (the previous regulations required sanctioning only if squads included four or more current Full Member players or Associate Member with ODI status players).”The league (ILT20) complies with the ICC’s regulations as they stand at the moment,” Allardice said. “The ICC only has any sanctioning authority over Associate member leagues. In our regulations there’s no cap on the number of foreign players that can be used. They have got opportunities in the playing XI for local UAE eligible players, they have got extra contracted spots in the squads for UAE eligible players, and they have got in their squads positions for players from Associate member countries as well.”

Celtic star who won 8/11 duels was an even bigger hero than Idah

Celtic secured a place in the play-off round of the Champions League on Wednesday night with a dramatic 1-0 win over BSC Young Boys at Parkhead.

It was a tense game between two fairly evenly matched teams for most of the evening, but the telling moment came just four minutes before the end of the 90 minutes.

Adam Idah remained composed and strong to get a shot off and saw his effort come off the goalkeeper and onto the defender, Loris Benito, who bundled the ball into his own net.

It was a match-winning cameo from the Ireland international, who started the game on the bench behind Kyogo Furuhashi, and one that could tempt Brendan Rodgers into bringing him back into the XI.

Adam Idah's performance against Young Boys

The 6 foot 3 marksman came on with 15 minutes left to go of the 90 minutes after Kyogo failed to register a shot on target and completed just 20% (1/5) of his attempted passes.

Idah struggled to get into the game at first and did not have much luck against the Young Boys defenders, as he lost both of his duels on the ground.

The summer signing from Norwich, however, made a perfect run to go through on goal in the 86th minute, staying onside and then using his strength to get a shot off.

Unfortunately, for Idah, the shot was saved by the goalkeeper but the ball still ended up in the back of the net, thanks to Benito, and he got to celebrate with the Parkhead faithful.

The true hero of the night for Rodgers and Celtic, however, was the player who played the pass to send the striker through on goal – Reo Hatate.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Why Reo Hatate was Celtic's hero

The Japan international was the main man for the Scottish giants on Wednesday night with an all-action display to help his side to claim all three points.

Celtic’s winning goal on the night was created by his moment of pure quality on the ball. Hatate picked up possession inside his own half and had the vision and quality to spot Idah’s run and play an inch-perfect, 30-40-yard, through ball with his weak foot to put the striker through on goal.

Aside from that magic piece of play from the Japanese maestro, the midfield star played a pivotal role in the clean sheet for the Bhoys with his fantastic play out of possession.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate won 73% of his duels in the match, as he dominated the opposition players in physical contests, and won four tackles without being dribbled past a single time.

These statistics show that the Young Boys players found it incredibly difficult to get the better of the midfield whiz, which helped to prevent Kasper Schmeichel from being worked even more.

Therefore, Hatate was the real hero for Rodgers because it was his performance in and out of possession that played a huge role in Celtic claiming all three points.

Lancashire 145 (Henry 5-45, Saini 3-63) and 2 for 0 trail Kent 270 (Leaning 90, Stewart 64, Denly 59, Bailey 6-64) by 123 runsKent finished the happier of the two sides at the end of a captivating second day of this LV=Insurance Division One clash with Lancashire after building a substantial first-innings lead over their hosts.Lancashire had been honest about their intentions to play on a pitch used just a few days before for England’s one-day international match with India but their decision backfired somewhat when they were bowled out for just 145 in a calamitous morning session that saw nine wickets fall in 28 overs.Kent struggled to do much better until half-centuries from Joe Denly, Jack Leaning and Grant Stewart saw a topsy-turvy day swing in favour of the visitors who were dismissed for 270 replying to Lancashire’s 145 before the Red Rose closed on 2-0 at the beginning of their second innings. The day began with the news that Kent captain Sam Billings had tested positive for Covid and was to be replaced by Ollie Robinson behind the stumps with Leaning taking over as captain. It set the tone for a bizarre day which saw Washington Sundar play no shot to the second delivery of the morning from Matt Henry only to see the ball jag back and take out his off stump. Two balls later and George Lavelle had departed, edging his second ball from Henry to Zak Crawley without scoring and 112 for 4 overnight had quickly become 112 for 6.The excellent Henry was on a roll and Steven Croft was next to go for 31, caught behind by temporary wicket keeper Jordan Cox who had donned the gloves as Kent awaited the arrival of Robinson.Henry’s fourth quickly followed when Tom Bailey received a brute of a third delivery he’d faced that uprooted his stumps with Luke Wood handing the New Zealander his five-for when he chipped a catch to Stewart at mid-on for 18.By then Henry had taken 5 for 14 from 29 deliveries and Lancashire were all but done at 145 for 9 with Nathan Gilchrist picking up the final wicket of Will Williams to a great catch in the gully from Daniel Bell-Drummond with no addition the total.Six wickets had fallen for 33 runs inside the first hour but the fun didn’t stop there when Kent came out to bat with Ben Compton finding Sundar at Point off Bailey’s second ball of the reply without scoring, before Bell-Drummond was trapped lbw by Williams, to leave the visitors 5 for 2.Meanwhile Crawley was defending for his life and the England opener had faced 26 balls without getting off the mark when the 27th saw him clip Williams to a diving Wood at midwicket to leave Kent 12 for 3 off 10 overs and the Lancashire members wondering if they’d better make plans for day three. It was left to Denly and Leaning to start the rebuild and they did it in painstaking fashion with the slow outfield meaning boundaries were at a premium and hard-run threes the order of the day.Leaning had his first of three lives when he was dropped by Rob Jones at slip on 32, but by the time the century partnership came up for the fourth wicket off 212 balls, the sun was out at Emirates Old Trafford and batting was appearing a far easier prospect.Denly finally departed just before tea for 59 when he failed to remove his bat in time to a Bailey delivery and edged one to a grateful Lavelle, but the 106 partnership had put his county well on the way to a lead and changed the narrative of the day.Or had it? Straight after the interval two wickets fell in an over for the second time in the day as Cox top-edged a Bailey delivery to Wood for two before Robinson was lbw third ball for 0.This left Kent 120 for 6 and Lancashire hopeful they could stay in the game with a narrow lead for the visitors. It was not to be. Just as Leaning had found a willing partner in Denly, Stewart stepped up and the seventh wicket pair began building the second century partnership of the innings but with far more attacking intent.Leaning would eventually depart just after 6pm for 90 off 209 balls, edging Jack Morley to slip where Luke Wells took a fine catch low down to his right. From there Stewart did his best to marshal the tail as a Henry nick behind gave Bailey his fifth wicket before Williams claimed his third by rearranging by Gilchrist’s stumps.By the time Navdeep Saini skied one to Josh Bohannon for three to leave Bailey with figures of 6 for 64 and Stewart unbeaten on 64, Kent had a lead of 125 and Lancashire were forced to take to the field for two overs which were safely negotiated by Wells and Keaton Jennings.
