Sights set: Nottingham Forest targeting the dream £30m Gimenez alternative

Over the last couple of weeks, countless names have been thrown into the mix as Nottingham Forest aim to secure a new striker before Friday’s transfer deadline.

On the face of it, it may seem harsh that the club are looking for new options after Chris Wood registered 14 Premier League goals last campaign, but it’s a signal of ambition from owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Eddie Nketiah appeared the most likely at one stage, but after failing to agree personal terms with the Arsenal ace, a deal fell through, with the Englishman now set for a move to Crystal Palace.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Vitor Roque is another name that has previously been mentioned, but after his loan move to Spanish side Real Betis, the Reds have to continue their hunt with just a couple of days left in the window.

As a result, they may turn to one target who has previously been the subject of interest from Manchester United.

Nottingham Forest's search for a striker

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest have now set their sights on Ajax striker Brian Brobbey before Friday’s deadline.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign in Eredivisie during 2023/24, registering 18 goals and eight assists, before receiving a call-up to the Netherlands national side for Euro 2024.

The report states that Forest are desperate to land a new centre-forward before the deadline, with the Ajax man the latest player on the club’s radar after their failure to sign Nketiah last week.

However, Brobbey would be an expensive addition for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, with previous reports claiming that the Dutch side value the youngster at around the £30m mark.

His goalscoring record would make him a phenomenal addition, but also his all-round play is suited to the Reds’ current system, making him a perfect alternative to another current target.

Why Brobbey would be the perfect Gimenez alternative

The saga over a potential move for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has been ongoing for numerous days, with various reports claiming different things over a potential move to the City Ground.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

Forest have had three separate bids rejected for the Mexican international, but journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed yesterday that the club are still trying to secure a deal for the 23-year-old.

It would be a deal in the region of €33m (£28m) for Gimenez, a respectable fee given his tally of 29 combined goals and assists in the Eredivisie last season.

However, the club still remain in the race for Brobbey, with the Ajax talent potentially being a better option for the Reds than Gimenez.

The “exceptional” Dutchman, as described by scout Antonio Mango, may have registered fewer goal contributions last season, but did manage to achieve a higher shot-on-target rate than the Mexican, making him more efficient with his chances in the final third.

He also contributed with more shot-creating actions per 90 whilst winning more aerial duels, providing that target man and aerial threat that Nuno likes in his centre-forwards.

Brobbey also achieved a higher pass accuracy rate, whilst completing more of the take-ons he attempted, demonstrating his quality at the ball at his feet – a crucial attribute to fit into the club’s transition into a more possession-based side.

Whilst Gimenez undoubtedly remains the club’s top target, with just a couple of days left in the window, they are running out of time to secure a deal for a player who will take the Reds to the next level.

Brobbey has demonstrated in the Netherlands that he has all the tools to thrive in the Premier League, with his bulldozing nature a problem for any defender who tries to stand his way.

£30m could be a good price for the youngster, who’s proven his goalscoring ability, whilst also having the potential to improve further in the East Midlands.

Aston Villa’s "serious talent" is now worth 111% more since Emery took over

One of the most underrated academies in the Premier League currently is that of Aston Villa. Since the competition rebranded from the First Division in 1992, the Villans have produced some excellent players, including the competition’s all-time leading appearance maker, Gareth Barry.

Other players produced from Villa’s underrated academy include Jack Grealish, whose £100m move from the Villans to Manchester City was once a British transfer record, and Gary Cahill, a Champions League winner with Chelsea.

Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish.

Since Unai Emery took over managerial duties at Villa Park, he has nurtured some more homegrown talent, but one player, in particular, has stood out and has seen his value rise greatly in the time Emery has been in charge.

Jacob Ramsey’s value in the 2022/23 season

The player in question here is Jacob Ramsey. The 23-year-old midfielder is a boyhood Villan and was born locally to the club, in Birmingham. He made a rapid rise from the youth ranks to the first team and has since become a key player for his boyhood side.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

The former England under-21 international has particularly been making waves under Emery, with the Spaniard helping him to fine-tune his game and become the “serious talent” widely known today, as football scout Antonio Mango described him.

The former Arsenal boss took charge at Villa Park in October 2022. In November, a then 21-year-old Ramsey was valued at just £23.6m, according to Transfermarkt. He was still breaking through into the Villa first team, although previous manager Steven Gerrard had given him several opportunities.

However, when Emery took charge, the youngster really showed his class. In that first season under the Spanish tactician, the 2022/23 campaign, the Birmingham-born attacking midfielder played 24 times, scoring five times and grabbing seven assists.

Impressively, all five of those goals, along with six of the assists, came in the Premier League, a competition in which he made 22 appearances. That is his best return in a single top-flight season to date.

By the end of the season, the youngster’s value had shot up, and he was worth £27m as a result of his impressive performances.

Ramsey’s value in 2023/24

Sadly for Ramsey, the 2023/24 campaign was hampered by injury. The 23-year-old missed 27 games over 186 days with three different ailments last term. First, a foot injury kept him sidelined before he missed a short period with a hamstring issue, and then a toe injury which kept him out for 17 games and 119 days.

With all that time on the sideline, the attacking midfielder did not quite manage to hit the same highest as he did previously. Last term, he played 21 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and grabbing two assists. Just one goal and assist apiece came in the top flight, in 16 games.

It was certainly a frustrating time for Ramsey, although his value did still rise slightly. By June this year, he was worth an impressive £50m, a price Villa slapped on his head, according to Football Insider. This certainly shows just how much he has thrived under Emery. In all, his value under the Spaniard rose an impressive 111% from when he first took charge at Villa Park.

The Villa number 41 has started the new season strongly. He has made three appearances so far, although is yet to start a game as he is eased back to fitness. Ramsey already has an assist to his name, for Jhon Duran against West Ham United, a goal that proved to be a winner.

There is no doubt that, in Ramsey, the Villans have their next academy star in the making. If he can stay fit this season, he could once again put up some stellar numbers under Emery as Villa look to impress on the biggest stage, the Champions League.

Cole Palmer ‘can’t stop players copying his celebration’ as Chelsea star tries to trademark iconic shivering move

Chelsea star Cole Palmer is trying to trademark his iconic celebration – but he might not be able to stop other players copying it.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international might not be able to stop other players from copying the celebration on a football pitch, but he can protect it from being used in the commercial sphere outside of the ground through his attempts to trademark the shivering move.

  • Getty

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer performed the celebration for the first time in December 2023 in Chelsea's 3-2 win at Luton Town in the Premier League. He reportedly got the idea from former Manchester City academy team-mate Morgan Rogers, who performed it after scoring for Middlesbrough. Indeed, Rogers performed the celebration after scoring for Aston Villa in their 2-1 win against Manchester City on Saturday.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking on talkSPORT, intellectual property, data and contract lawyer Ben Milloy said: "We're probably used to sports stars protecting their names and their logos and that kind of thing. But it is possible to protect what's called a non-traditional trademark. And that's what Cole Palmer has done. He's sought to protect a gesture or a technical emotion mark.

"But instead of filing a name or a logo, he's uploaded a short video of him performing the shiver celebration. And he has sought to protect it for a range of goods and services. And they are the typical merchandise that you'd expect. But as you say, it is quite wide-ranging. You've actually got baking powder in there as one of them. And underwater vehicles. So it's an indication of what Cole Palmer might have in store."

He added: "I mean, I don't really see it as a complication. I had to think about this. I suppose it's possible because we're just talking about intellectual property rights and there are various intellectual property rights and they all have quite a sort of confined scope.

"So I suppose it's possible for Morgan Rogers to say that he has some kind of copyright. If he treats his goal celebration as a form of performance art as a sort of dramatic work then it may qualify for copyright protection. And that might give him some theoretical claim. But it seems there would be lots and lots of hurdles and it seems basically it would not be successful."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

When asked if Palmer can stop other players from mimicking the celebration on the pitch, Milloy added: "What we're focused on really is Cole Palmer being able to stop people from using it off the football pitch in the commercial sphere, as it were.

"So he wouldn't be able to stop another player on the football pitch from mimicking the celebration or paying homage to it, whatever because that's not in the commercial sphere. So trademarks are designed to protect their kind of outside interests, their merchandising, their licensing deals and that kind of thing."

No national consolation as England go again in search for series clean-sweep

Pakistan seek a response with the bat after two failed displays at Cardiff and Lord’s

Andrew Miller12-Jul-2021Big PictureAnyone in need of a pick-me-up this morning? Can I interest you in a tale of a band of plucky underdogs, thrown together in adversity at 48 hours’ notice, charged with defending their nation’s honour against the sixth-best ODI team in the world, and doing so with such aplomb that they now stand on the brink of a 3-0 series whitewash? Okay, so it’s not quite the homecoming narrative that the British sporting public had been gearing up for this week, but I’m afraid it’s the best we can offer right now.Yes, it’s the climax of the Royal London One-Day series, between England and Pakistan at Edgbaston. And no, that’s not quite a match for England versus Italy in the climax of Euro 2020. But given that the BBC were waving their forthcoming coverage of the Hundred at some 30 million viewers during the half-time interval at Wembley, maybe a handful of those heartbroken fans will be minded to flick channels a few days early on Tuesday and take solace in the fortunes of England’s other national team.Nope. I’m not selling it, I can tell. There’ve been some stellar displays in the past two matches – in particular from Saqib Mahmood, whose athleticism, technique and ferocity has been the true difference between the teams. But England won the first match at such a canter that Cardiff’s floodlights weren’t even required to clear their throats, while the second was a cakewalk long before the halfway mark of Pakistan’s chase.Related

England's success shows depth of talent in county game – Gregory

And therein lies a strange irony about the live sports-watching experience. Whereas an agonised throng at Wembley would happily have sold their grannies for a similarly angst-free display of dominance on Sunday night, you suspect the patrons at Edgbaston wouldn’t mind a little more jeopardy to spice up their occasion.Still, it could have been worse I suppose. England’s Wembley defeat could have been confirmed by something even more arbitrary than a series of misses from 12 yards … something like passes completed, or shots on target, as Jimmy Neesham wryly noted on Twitter in reference to the last major final involving an England team. Because if Sunday’s loss was a bitter pill to swallow for England’s fans (and rumour has it that it was…), then at least there’s the two-year anniversary of a happier close shave coming up on Wednesday.None of which has much bearing on the upcoming event, of course. Pakistan being Pakistan, they are perfectly capable of bouncing back from consecutive thumpings with a display of irresistible flair and aggression; but England’s spare-parts XI has hit the ground purring in its first two well-oiled outings. They seem well placed to make it a hat-trick. And what Harry Kane and Co. would have given for one of those at Wembley…Form GuideEngland WWWWL

In the spotlightIt’s been a remarkable week for England’s scratch side, and while some players may be left with little more than warm memories when the big guns return to reclaim their rightful berths, others – most notably Mahmood, but also Phil Salt at the top of the order – are keenly aware of the opportunities that are knocking right now. Salt’s 60 from 54 balls at Lord’s was an outstanding audition from a fearless batter playing with exactly the sort of mindset that will have earned the approval of the absent Eoin Morgan. His response to the loss of Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley for ducks was to keep peppering the boundaries, ten in all in a 97-run stand with James Vince, as he placed the team’s advancement ahead of any concerns for his own wicket – and given that he made a slightly tangled 7 from 13 balls at Cardiff it was a doubly impressive approach. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow will return in due course, but ever since the banishment of Alex Hales, England’s 50-over team has lacked a reserve opener whose methods fit the team’s mood so well. A similar showing from Salt at Edgbaston could further accelerate his progress.Phil Salt after scoring his maiden ODI fifty•Getty ImagesFakhar Zaman has cut a slightly bewildered figure for Pakistan in the first two ODIs – sixth man out for 47 at Cardiff, and fourth man out for 10 at Lord’s; returns which at least demonstrate a degree of durability given how easily Mahmood and Lewis Gregory have been cutting a swathe through the powerplay. But England have done their homework on their free-flowing opponent, in particular with a tight line into his body, thus denying him the chance to free those dangerously boundary-laden arms. His series strike-rate of 50.89 is the lowest of his career to date, and barely half his career figure of 95.00. If Pakistan are to get something from the series, they made need Fakhar to find a way out of his shackles.Pitch and conditionsA lack of recent 50-over matches at Edgbaston mean that the conditions may be a touch unknowable, although the venue tends to offer a true batting surface with good carry. That said, in each of its last two Blast fixtures, scores of 81 (by Yorkshire) and 63 (by Birmingham Bears) were recorded, so make of that what you will, and with ceaselessly damp conditions in the Midlands this month, the pitch looked to have some moisture in it on the eve of the contest. The groundstaff were using sunlamps on the strip to help speed up the preparation. The weather for Tuesday is set to be overcast, but the rain is expected to stay away.Team newsWith the series already sealed against Sri Lanka at Bristol last week, England resisted the temptation to give their bench an airing – with Tom Banton and George Garton now doubly unlucky not have got their chance given the Covid chaos that broke out in the squad soon afterwards. And with that precedent in mind, there’s little reason to think that England will change their approach now – with World Cup Super League points up for grabs, they’ll be loath to tinker with an unexpectedly successful formula, unless they feel the need to manage Mahmood’s workload with the T20Is coming up. An unchanged XI seems likely, although Jake Ball was given an energetic work-out in England’s practice session on Monday.England: (possible) 1 Phil Salt, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Zak Crawley, 4 James Vince, 5 Ben Stokes (capt), 6 John Simpson (wk), 7 Lewis Gregory, 8 Craig Overton, 9 Brydon Carse, 10 Saqib Mahmood, 11 Matt ParkinsonPakistan need to change their fortunes, but other than wishing for a return to form for Babar Azam, it’s hard to see how a wholesale switch of personnel can help their cause. Fakhar and Rizwan are similarly proven performers with the bat, while Saud Shakeel’s maiden fifty at Lord’s was a timely confirmation of his abilities too. There’s more room for an overhaul in the bowling, however. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali have led the line well, but their support cast has let them down, notably Haris Rauf and the allrounders Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan. Mohammad Hasnain may be due an outing.Pakistan: (possible) 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Imam-ul-Haq, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Sohaib Maqsood, 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Faheem Ashraf, 9 Hasan Ali, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris Rauf/Mohammad Hasnain.Stats and trivia Edgbaston has not hosted an ODI since the World Cup semi-final in 2019, two years and a day ago, when England beat Australia by eight wickets. Pakistan have played 14 previous ODIs at Edgbaston, winning six and losing eight. However, only five of those have come against England, whom they last played at the venue in 2006. The rest have been at ICC events, most recently their group-stage victory over New Zealand in 2019. Hasan Ali took his fourth ODI five-for with figures of 5 for 51 at Lord’s. Each of his previous three five-wicket hauls had come in 2017, while in 13 completed matches dating back to November 2018, he had not picked up more than a single wicket in an innings.Quotes”15 of the current squad in isolation. There has been heavy snowfall in the Liverpool area over the last 24 hours, though it is expected to clear prior to Sunday's slated 4:30pm kick-off. However, the potential for lingering hazardous conditions, particularly around the stadium and its surrounding areas, could jeopardise the game. The safety of players, staff and supporters remains paramount, and any deterioration in conditions was in danger of forcing a decision to postpone.

If the fixture had been called off, finding a new date to reschedule the game would have presented logistical difficulties. Liverpool’s already congested schedule, compounded by the previous postponement of the Merseyside Derby against Everton due to Storm Darragh, left few available weekends. The derby is tentatively set for either gameweek 24 or 25 in early February, but Liverpool's potential progression in the Carabao Cup and other tournaments may narrow the options further.

He lost the ball 19 times: Slot must drop 6/10 Liverpool man after West Ham

Liverpool hit at West Ham United like lightning on Tuesday night, turning a maxim on its head to strike twice with a 5-1 thrashing over the east Londoners for the second year running in the Carabao Cup.

In the early stage of the contest, Anfield was, frankly, flat. The visitors hurled efforts toward Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal in the opening as they sought to capitalise – and they did, Jarell Quansah and Co culpable of a disastrous attempt to clear a corner, turning into their own net.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Diogo Jota restored parity after 20 minutes but the Reds storm was truly ignited in the second half, with the goals lashed in and ending the contest with Liverpool 5-1 victors.

It was a big one for several players looking to stake their claim, and while his performance was imperfect, Wataru Endo will be pleased with the job he did at the heart of Slot’s set-up.

Wataru Endo stakes his claim

The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle only handed Endo a 5/10 match score for his display against West Ham, praising the tough midfielder’s combative commitment but noting that he struggled to really impose himself and didn’t contribute with the smooth forward passing that Ryan Gravenberch brings to the position.

The journalist wrote: ‘Showcased a steel that is perhaps absent from Liverpool’s midfield when he doesn’t play. Won a fair few duels but not always the most progressive in his passing. His attempt at a clearance for West Ham’s goal was pure panic as it struck Quansah and went in.’

Still, he’s a fine option and afforded Gravenberch a much-needed rest, with the Dutchman having played every minute of the 2024/25 campaign for club and country before the cup clash.

Alexis Mac Allister came on with just over 30 minutes remaining and added so much impetus, creating one big chance and hitting the woodwork with a stinging strike from range. Gravenberch, indeed, didn’t play, but the 22-year-old plays a very different role than Endo within Slot’s system, one better suited to the way the boss wants to operate.

Gravenberch has averaged 1.2 successful dribbles per game in the Premier League this year, with a success rate of 60%. Moreover, he’s won 58% of his ground duels, outstripping Endo in both accuracy and output, averaging 5.2 per game.

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

The Japan international is a good utility option but you can see that Slot’s style might be knocked off-kilter if Gravenberch were to pick up a lengthy injury.

Endo, though, played well, and it provided Liverpool with something different. Multi-dimensionality is crucial for a team looking to chase down trophies across different routes, and the Japan star has already got one Carabao Cup title in the bag – who’s to say he can’t play a leading role in another?

That said, with Martin Zubimendi Liverpool’s desired option to have tussled with Gravenberch for a starting spot, there’s an improvement to be made.

Elsewhere, Kostas Tsimikas struggled to prove that he is the best option to compete with Andy Robertson at left-back going forward.

Kostas Tsimikas is not good enough for a starting role

Tsimikas has been a solid servant for Liverpool over the years, signing from Olympiakos for £12m in 2020. He’s completed 91 appearances, claiming 17 assists and winning a host of major honours.

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

Last season, he was drafted into a regular starting role under Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League as Robertson recuperated from a shoulder injury suffered up in Scotland with the Tartan Army. He ebbed and flowed (Tsimikas, not Robertson. Robertson just kind of stagnated on the sidelines).

Against LASK in the Europa League one year ago, journalist Paul Gorst noted that he didn’t have his “finest hour”, and though the Greece international has a wand of a left foot and a natural-born creative flair, he’s not the complete package, with positioning and awareness that leaves much to be desired.

As you will see from the graphic above, the 28-year-old was by no means poor in regard to his spread of match statistics, taking a blocked shot when Salah was in a better position, failing to make a single attempted dribble and failing to meet the targetted noggin with each of his six crosses, as per Sofascore.

Tsimikas is just a little… one-dimensional. There was a moment that has since entered the roaring stream of social media that saw the defender unconventionally look to protect his goal against Max Kilman, throwing himself to the floor in a wretched attempt to block the shot that never came. It was funny but his blushes were spared. Mirth would have fallen flat had Kilman breached Kelleher’s net.

Losing the ball 19 times, he was eager to make things happen but it didn’t come off, and though he fought well against the energetic Jarrod Bowen, left-back will surely be a position that FSG target before long.

Indeed, Liverpool are long-time admirers of Wolverhampton Wanderers star Rayan Ait-Nouri, whose capacity to underlap and invert could be a welcome addition within the fluid ball-playing system of Slot, with the head coach keen to shift and swell when in possession and on the forward charge.

You have to respect the commitment toward protecting his goal, but Tsimikas was questionable across a series of shaky moments that really did underscore the influence that Virgil van Dijk instils. West Ham’s profligacy precluded their success, but it could have been different against sharper, more confident opposition.

With all this in mind, Tsimikas can’t be in the starting line up for this weekend’s top-flight clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

Slot must axe Liverpool ace who earns more than Diaz & Konate

It’s time for this wider member to move on…

Ian Holland rips out Kent top order to keep Hampshire hopes alive

Holland claims 4-12 and scores 30* as Kent are eliminated from knock-outs in rain-hit match

ECB Reporters Network08-Aug-2021Hampshire’s hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Royal London Cup are still alive after they coasted to a six-wicket win over Kent Spitfires at Beckenham.Ian Holland ripped out Kent’s top order with 4 for 12 as the hosts failed to bat out their overs, despite a rain reduction to 24 per side. Scott Currie took 2 for 4 as the Spitfires were all out for 105.The Duckworth Lewis Stern Method pushed the target up to just 107 and Hampshire chased it down with relative ease, finishing on 107 for 4, Tom Alsop the top scorer with 37 and Holland hitting an unbeaten 30.Kent have now been eliminated, regardless of the outcome of Thursday’s final scheduled match with Gloucestershire at Beckenham, a fixture in doubt due to the Covid outbreak that saw today’s match between Gloucestershire and Middlesex cancelled. The prospects of play looked remote as steady rain fell throughout the morning, but conditions improved and play started at 2.30pm, with the match initially reduced to 27 overs per side.Kent’s openers made a bright start after being asked to bat but, after moving to 42 without loss, Tawanda Muyeye was bowled by John Turner for 24.Holland then instigated a collapse when he claimed two wickets in the twelfth over. Ollie Robinson was caught by James Fuller at deep square leg for 27 and Jack Leaning was subsequently caught and bowled for 11. In Holland’s next over, Harry Finch chipped him to Nick Gubbins and was out for nought.Kent had reached 70 for 4 before a shower sent the players sprinting to the pavilion, trimming the match by a further three overs per side and, if anything, their batting got worse when play resumed. Darren Stevens made just eight when Holland had him caught by Felix Organ and Grant Stewart was run out for four, by a direct hit from Tom Scriven, chasing a single that could best be described as optimistic.Joe Gordon made nine on his List A debut before he holed out to Scriven and was caught by Organ and Currie then bowled Harry Podmore for eight before getting Hamid Qadri lbw for five.Kyle Abbott wrapped up the innings when Matt Quinn was caught by Tom Prest and Hampshire made short work of the chase. The Spitfires’ hopes flickered when Quinn took two quick wickets, strangling Prest down the leg side where he was caught behind for two and then bowling Gubbins, also for two, to reduce the visitors to 23 for 2, but Hampshire put on 40 for the next wicket before Alsop chopped Podmore to Finch, who took a sharp catch at point.By the time Joe Weatherley was caught by Muyeye off Podmore for 25 Gloucestershire needed just another 15 for victory with six wickets in hand and Fuller smacked Podmore for six to clinch the win with 34 balls to spare.
