More old gold from Darren Stevens as century puts Kent on top

Stevens becomes oldest Championship centurion since 1986

Veteran allrounder Darren Stevens starred with an unbeaten century to put Kent in the driving seat on a rain-affected second day of their LV= County Championship clash against Northamptonshire.Stevens, who will celebrate his 45th birthday later this month, struck 116 not out – his 35th first-class hundred – and became the oldest player since 1986 to register three figures in a County Championship fixture. He shared partnerships of 74 with Harry Podmore and 63 with Miguel Cummins for the last two wickets, shepherding Kent to a first-innings total of 455 at Northampton.Afternoon rain restricted the Northamptonshire response to just 15.2 overs, although a flamboyant undefeated 54 by Ricardo Vasconcelos enabled them to make swift inroads on the deficit, reaching 91 for 1 at the close.”I’m really appreciative of the tail helping me out,” Stevens said. “I was an angry man when Podmore got out because I thought we were going really nicely and I’d not batted with Miguel before! So I said to him ‘do you want to face spin or seam?’ and he said ‘I’m good, man’. Finally getting to 450 was great and we’re pleased with that.”We bowled pretty poorly but Miguel looks like he’s a bit of a handful and I think he’ll be key for us. I think that’s one of these situations where seamers are looking to tie an end up while the quicker bowlers hopefully do the damage.”Northamptonshire’s hopes of wrapping up the visitors’ innings quickly in the morning gained a boost in the fourth over as Tom Taylor removed Matt Milnes, steering him to Alex Wakely at second slip. However, Podmore proved a capable foil for Stevens, who was largely content to keep picking up singles as his partner slammed a string of boundaries off Ben Sanderson to reach 29.Offspinner Rob Keogh finally broke the ninth-wicket stand, tempting Podmore into a swing across the line for Adam Rossington to complete the stumping, but Kent were by no means finished. With debutant Cummins blocking confidently and rotating the strike, Stevens inched towards his hundred, clipping Nathan Buck over square leg for six before pulling the single that raised the landmark from 120 balls. There seemed no end to the home side’s frustration when Vasconcelos, at slip, was unable to cling on to a sharp chance from Cummins, but Taylor eventually dismissed the left-hander for 24, blasting out his middle stump. The players returned after lunch sporting black armbands and lined up on the outfield for a two-minute silence to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s passing before Northamptonshire began their reply.Podmore took some punishment at the hands of Vasconcelos, his first three overs going for 31 as the opener unleashed a spate of cuts and cover drives to bring up his half-century in 45 deliveries. Vasconcelos put together a brisk opening partnership of 77 with Ben Curran, the only Northamptonshire casualty so far after chopping Cummins’ third ball on to his stumps for 24.

Sky Sports: Man Utd hold talks over signing new £30m "monster" for Ten Hag

Manchester United have reportedly held talks over signing a new £30m midfield "monster" for Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd eyeing more signings after Zirkzee and Yoro

Sporting director Dan Ashworth and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe have secured two marquee summer signings already ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with forward Joshua Zirkzee and centre-back Leny Yoro signed from Bologna and Lille respectively.

Unfortunately, Yoro has already sustained an injury in pre-season, with the Red Devils confirming that the teenager has since undergone surgery on a foot problem.

Leny Yoro

Attention is still on further reinforcements, with Bayern Munich duo Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt two top targets at right-back and centre-back.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg provided a recent update on the pair, saying: “From FC Bayern's perspective, the offer from Manchester United for Matthijs de Ligt is still not sufficient to proceed with the deal! The two clubs remain apart on the transfer fee. Bayern still demand €50m+ bonuses. Negotiations for Noussair Mazraoui are more concrete at this stage, with the transfer fee expected of at least €25m all-in. Still waiting for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and West Ham.”

It isn’t just another centre-back and new right-back that is wanted at Old Trafford, though, with a midfielder also high up on the shortlist before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

One name who has been loosely linked with United is AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, but now, it appears as if the club have made their first move.

Man Utd hold talks for Youssouf Fofana

According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Man Utd have now held talks with Monaco over a deal for Fofana. He isn’t the only alternative to PSG’s Manuel Ugarte, though, with Palmeiras’ Richard Rios, Sander Berge of Burnley, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and recent loanee Sofyan Amrabat also named.

Fofana, a France international, appears to be at the top of his game at the age of 25 with a career-high €30m Transfermarkt valuation. He’s been with Monaco since 2020 after joining from Strasbourg and has made 175 appearances for his current employers, scoring seven times and providing 15 assists.

Capable of playing central, holding or right midfielder, Fofana has been called a "monster" in the middle of the park by Football analyst Ben Mattinson.

Man Utd would need around £30m to sign Fofana, a fee considerably less than PSG's asking price for Ugarte, according to recent reports. By the looks of things, a deal could gather pace in the coming days or weeks with initial talks held, making Fofana a name to keep an eye on.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Brazil international Neymar is nursing another knock at present, with the South American forward enduring an injury-ravaged spell in the Middle East. He has been restricted to just seven appearances for Al-Hilal since joining them from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Knee ligament damage kept Neymar sidelined for over 12 months, with the 32-year-old forced back onto the treatment shortly after making his return to competitive action. Despite those struggles, and talk of his contract being terminated, it is being claimed that he will be included in Al-Hilal’s squad for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

    DID YOU KNOW?

As Neymar is given one last chance in which to prove his worth, reports that experienced Senegalese defender Koulibaly – who left Premier League giants Chelsea in June 2023 – will be cut from Jorge Jesus’ ranks after failing to convince across 18 months in Riyadh.

Neymar’s contract is only due to run until the summer of 2025, but does include an extension option. Amid his struggles to find form and fitness, it has been suggested that he could line up a reunion with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at MLS side Inter Miami or return to where it all began for him at boyhood club Santos.

Middle-order muddle could hurt Sunrisers against masterly Mumbai Indians

Big picture

The Sunrisers Hyderabad had lost two straight games at the start of their IPL campaigns in 2014, 2016 and 2020 too. In 2016, they went on to win the title, and in 2020, they made the playoffs, finishing third. But a look back at history might not be enough if they are to avert a third successive loss this season. Especially as they go up against defending champions Mumbai Indians, fresh from consigning the Kolkata Knight Riders to an epic capitulation after coming up marginally short in their season opener against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.Chasing at Chepauk in their first two games, the Sunrisers combusted in a rash of ill-judged shots, particularly in their last outing, against the Knight Riders, the want of solidity and fluency in their middle order exposed. They could miss the services of Kane Williamson for a third game on the trot, but even in his absence, the Sunrisers possess resources potent enough – at least on paper – to pose the Mumbai Indians a challenge. That possibility, however, might warrant some tinkering in the line-up, perhaps even a promotion to the opening spot for Jonny Bairstow, who, if handed the gloves, could allow the side to bring in an Indian allrounder – like Kedar Jadhav – in place of Wriddhiman Saha, who kept in the first two matches but struggled with the bat.Team combination concerns aren’t as acute for the Mumbai Indians, but they might sense an opportunity to hand offspinner Jayant Yadav his first game of the season, a tactical ploy that has reaped captain Rohit Sharma impressive rewards over the past two editions.

In the news

Williamson is unlikely to be fit to make the playing XI, as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury, but he said in a social-media video posted by his franchise that he was “pretty optimistic” about returning to full fitness “within the week”.England batter Jason Roy, whom the Sunrisers had acquired as Mitchell Marsh’s replacement, finished his seven-day quarantine on Friday, but might have to wait before getting a game.

Likely XIs

Mumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt) 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Rahul Chahar, 9 Marco Jansen/Jayant Yadav, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Jasprit BumrahSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2. Strategy punt

  • Rashid Khan is the most frugal spinner in the IPL since 2019, conceding at just 5.40 per over, and his economy of 5.20 against the Mumbai Indians is the second-best by a bowler against a single opposition (behind Lasith Malinga’s 4.70 against the now-defunct Deccan Chargers). The Sunrisers could have Khan bowl an over or two at Suryakumar Yadav, who averages 58 at Chepauk, the highest for any batter in the IPL, and has struck at 125 with two fifties against his name. Against Khan, though, Suryakumar scores at less than a run a ball. If the remainder of his overs are saved for Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard’s arrival at the crease, Khan might be able to stifle the Mumbai Indians’ batting might, given Pollard and Hardik score at just 68 and 55 respectively against him, the latter being lowest strike rate in the IPL for any batter against the legspinner.
  • Such has been the extent of assistance for spinners at Chepauk that even Sharma bowled on Thursday as the Mumbai Indians’ third spin-bowling option. With a legspinner and a slow left-arm spinner already in their ranks in the form of Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya, they could strengthen their bowling by fielding Jayant in place of overseas quick Marco Jansen. They had pulled off a similar move, to considerable success, in the first qualifier in 2019 where they brought in Jayant for an overseas player at the same venue. With all of Jayant’s six wickets in IPL having been those of left-handers, he could open the bowling to counter David Warner, the lone left-hander in the Sunrisers line-up.

    Stats that matter

    • Warner is one shy of becoming the first batter to 50 half-centuries in the IPL. That landmark fifty would also be his 40th for the Sunrisers, the most by a batter for a team in the tournament. His opposite number, Sharma, is 28 runs short of 4000 Runs in T20s as captain.
    • Pollard needs two sixes to become the fifth player to hit 200 sixes in the IPL.
    • Saturday’s match will be Ishan Kishan’s 100th appearance in T20s. He needs 39 to reach 2500 runs in the format.
    • Two wickets in the game will make Krunal the sixth Mumbai Indians bowler with 50 strikes in the tournament. Hardik is one catch shy of becoming the third from the franchise to take 50 catches in the competition.
  • Quansah upgrade: Liverpool targeting move for £60m “phenomenon”

Liverpool are expected to make a late surge toward an elusive first-team signing before the transfer window slams shut next weekend, with outgoing business starting to gain steam.

Fabio Carvalho was sold to Brentford in a deal rising to £27.5m last week and sought-after defender Sepp Van den Berg is in the process of joining him at the Gtec in a £25m transfer. Bobby Clark has also been sold to RB Salzburg, newly led by Pep Lijnders, for a £10m fee.

Such players are not first-team regulars and will profit in excess of £60m, ostensibly providing sporting director Richard Hughes with ample funds to bolster Arne Slot's squad with an impactful addition.

    Mohamed Simakan

Moreover, Joe Gomez is considering leaving, with no shortage of suitors for the £45m-rated defender. Should he leave, Liverpool would unquestionably be left light at the rear, and it would be paramount that a fresh face be brought in to ensure that the new era goes off without a hitch.

    Liverpool transfer news

According to Sky Germany's Philipp Hinze, Liverpool are interested in striking a late-window deal for RB Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan, though the interest is not yet advanced.

This is likely down to Gomez's continuing role in Liverpool's squad, indeed preparing for Brentford's forthcoming trip to Anfield. Should the cogs shift, then intrigue could accelerate with a snap.

Simakan, aged 24, is thought to have a €70m (£60m) release clause and whether a more affordable figure could be negotiated is uncertain, but the Frenchman could bring the perfect skillset to Slot's door – replacing the departed players and actually improving the squad.

    Why Liverpool want Mohamed Simakan

The above-mentioned elements make for a more than compelling argument that Liverpool should sign a centre-back before the end of the month – and that's without even mentioning that veteran Joel Matip's contract expired back in June.

    Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip

Having signed for Leipzig from Strasbourg in 2021, Simakan has since completed 121 matches – scoring seven goals and adding 13 assists – with his performances helping his team toward successive DFB-Pokal titles in 2021/22 and 2022/23 and the DFL-Supercup too.

He has the skills to succeed at an outfit like Liverpool, with Strasbourg reserve team manager Francois Keller even claiming that "we quickly realised that we were dealing with a phenomenon" soon after he emerged on the senior stage.

Liverpool's return to the Champions League this year calls for some added impetus in defence, and Simakan's aggression and intelligence could help the English giants go far as they step back in among Europe's elite.

Simakan's tactical fluidity suggests that he could be the perfect Gomez successor, with the dynamic Liverpool defender principally playing in the same roles – though his pliability stretched toward left-back and even defensive midfield last term.

Especially when considering the nature of the 6 foot 1 ace's skillset. As per FBref, Simakan ranks among the top 13% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 12% for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 9% for progressive carries and the top 17% for successful take-ons per 90.

Of course, his data pool is swollen in parts by his movements between central defence and a wider berth, but he has maintained a sharp passing game and athletic robustness whatever the role, only furthering the argument that he could be Liverpool's man.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold supported by the young and exciting Conor Bradley on the defensive right flank, it's unlikely that Simakan would play the lion's share of his football out wide, and so his signing could even see Liverpool land an upgrade on Jarell Quansah.

    Jarell Quansah upgrade

Quansah, make no mistake, is one of the Premier League's most talented up-and-comers. During the 2022/23 campaign, he plied his trade with Bristol Rovers in League One, with Klopp liking what he saw during last summer's pre-season and integrating him into the senior fold.

    Jarell Quansah celebrates for Liverpool.

Hailed as an "absolute monster" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 6 foot 5 defender featured prominently throughout the year and played an instrumental part in winning the Carabao Cup, starting his professional career off with a silver-laden season on Merseyside.

It's important to remember that he's still young and that Simakan arriving as an upgrade is not actually to make a negative comment on his giddy potential. Instead, Quansah could benefit from not shouldering too weighty a burden at this stage.

And from a tactical standpoint, Simakan's creative ball-playing style could play right into Slot's hands, raising fluency and opening further channels for the build-up play.

He also won 63% of his aerial battles in the Bundesliga last year, as per Sofascore, with a headed ability that could bear dividends across the duration of the year, for Quansah was subbed off at half-time during Liverpool's Premier League opener against Ipswich Town last weekend.

Slot made a bold call in taking the young titan off on his debut as helmsman, having provided such a strong show of faith in Quansah by starting him ahead of Konate only to take him off, but his candid remark that Liverpool were not winning enough aerial battles, with the centre-half losing half of his duels.

Therefore, Liverpool simply have to sign Simakan before the transfer window slams shut next week. He is strong, physical and dynamic, with a versatile approach that could even see him fill in for Alexander-Arnold when need be.

Should Gomez be sold, it's imperative that the deal is done.

More could still be on the way before the August 30 deadline, though, with Monchi seemingly working hard behind the scenes on potential further signings. Villa have been using the lure of Champions League football to persuade players to move to the Midlands, and recent reports have claimed that a bid has been made for AS Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante.

That offer is thought to be worth around £17m plus bonuses, whereas players in the Premier League are also of interest. Villa have been credited with an interest in Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, with reports even claiming a total agreement had been reached. Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez also has admirers at Villa Park and could be on the way out of Anfield.

Crystal Palace striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta is another player of interest after scoring a hat-trick against Villa in a 5-0 win for the Eagles on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign. Another new signing is firmly on the cards, but this time at youth level.

Aston Villa set to sign Mason Cotcher from Sunderland

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed over the weekend that Aston Villa had sent a formal bid to Sunderland for teenage forward Mason Cothcer, who was already training with Villa’s youth side.

Now, according to The Telegraph, Cotcher is set to undergo an Aston Villa medical on Friday after the clubs agreed on a package for his services.

It is added that other formalities of a deal are set to be finalised over the weekend, but by the looks of things, the impressive teenage forward will soon be an official Aston Villa player, potentially progressing into Emery’s first team plans in years to come.

The 17-year-old scored nine goals and provided one assist in 27 games for Sunderland's U18 side, while also making appearances for Leeds United, Arsenal and Manchester United while looking for his next move, which is now set to be in the Midlands with Villa.

Imagine him & Joseph: Leeds targeting late swoop for "unplayable" EFL star

The summer transfer window officially slams shut on Friday of next week and this means that Leeds United do not have much time left to complete their business.

Georginio Rutter's permanent transfer to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion was officially confirmed on Monday night, with the Frenchman becoming the latest star to move away from Elland Road in recent months.

Glen Kamara, who signed for Rennes, Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham Hotspur, and Crysencio Summerville, who moved to West Ham United, have also left the club this summer.

Meanwhile, the West Yorkshire outfit have dipped into the transfer market to land Alex Cairns, Joe Rothwell, Jayden Bogle, and Joe Rodon to bolster Daniel Farke's squad.

This means that the Whites are yet to add an attacking midfielder, winger, or striker to the group, despite losing Summerville and Rutter from the team.

However, there are still around ten days left to go before the window slams shut and there is some time left for Leeds to pursue deals for attackers to improve Farke's attacking options ahead of the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

In fact, the Yorkshire-based outfit are reportedly eyeing up a winger from the Championship to come in and replace Summerville this month.

Leeds eyeing swoop for EFL sensation

According to Football Insider, Leeds are targeting a late swoop to bring former academy graduate Jack Clarke back to Elland Road from divisional rivals Sunderland.

The report claims that the English wizard, who was described as "unplayable" by pundit Adrian Clarke, is one of the players the club have identified as a target to come in and bolster their wide options before the deadline passes.

It states that the Whites have decided that they will sign a winger and a striker before the end of the window, following the departures of Rutter and Summerville.

    Jack Clarke

The Boot Room reports that Leeds are interested in signing Clarke and goes as far as to say that the Black Cats whiz is open to returning to his former club.

It added, though, that there are a number of teams keen on the electric forward and it will not be an easy deal for Farke's side to get over the line.

The outlet also revealed that it will take a fee of around £18m to tempt Sunderland into parting ways with their star player and it remains to be seen whether or not the Whites are prepared to spend that much on a signing this summer.

If they do splash the cash and swoop to sign Clarke for £18m, the Black Cats magician could come in as a dream partner for Mateo Joseph in the final third.

    Mateo Joseph's attacking potential

Leeds supporters saw first-hand how willing Farke is to give young players a chance to showcase their ability, as Gray was handed a regular role in the team and earned the Championship Young Player of the Year award.

Joseph looks set to be the latest talented prospect to get the Gray treatment from the German head coach. He started the first two games of the league season, having come into the campaign with zero senior league starts in his career.

The Spain U21 international is yet to get off the mark this term but did create a 'big chance' for his teammates, which they failed to make the most of.

He has been handed an opportunity after an impressive summer, in which the youngster scored four goals during pre-season, with two strikes against Hannover, one against Schalke, and one against Valencia.

Last season, all 20 of his appearances in the Championship came as a substitute but he did get a chance to impress as a starter against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup.

As you can see in the table above, Joseph found the back of the net twice against the Premier League side and created two chances for his teammates, which shows that he can make a big impact when given time and service.

The Spanish striker, who scored 19 goals in 33 games for the club at U21 level, did not have Rutter to provide him with service against West Brom on Saturday, and the signing of Clarke could provide him with a player who can create chances for him.

Why Leeds should sign Jack Clarke

Firstly, the 23-year-old gem came up through the ranks at Thorp Arch and may not take much time to settle in, as he has lived in the area and will already know people around the club.

This could allow him to hit the ground running in a way that a signing with no prior experience in the area or at the club may not be able to do this summer.

Secondly, he is a proven Championship performer who has the quality to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch, based on his form for Sunderland in recent seasons.

As you can see in the table above, the English sensation has provided a big threat in the final third for the Black Cats, as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

This suggests that he could arrive at Elland Road this summer and Farke could expect him to immediately be a key player for the team, due to his proven quality at that level.

His creative prowess could also make him the perfect winger to play alongside Joseph, as he has the ability to consistently create high-quality chances for the forward.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Clarke created 12 'big chances' for his teammates and racked up 9.77 xA in the Championship. However, he was only rewarded with four assists, which shows that his fellow attackers let him down with their wasteful finishing.

Farke could land his own Raphinha in Leeds swoop for "electric" wizard

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing the Championship winger this month.

This suggests that Joseph would not be starved of service at the top end of the pitch if Leeds sign the winger, which is why they could be an exciting pairing for the club.

Report: Man Utd accept bid to sell £60k-p/w "monster" who played v Brighton

Manchester United have reportedly accepted an offer from a European club for the sale of a £60,000-a-week Old Trafford ace who played against Brighton on Saturday.

Man Utd eye more signings amid Brighton defeat

The Red Devils experienced a bitterly disappointing defeat on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Brighton in their first away Premier League game of the season. While the performance as a whole was good at times, it was still a reality check after the opening victory at home to Fulham, with the marking for Joao Pedro's last-gasp winner inexcusable.

New signings have strengthened United's squad this summer, with Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt exciting defensive additions and attacking ace Joshua Zirkzee scoring on his debut, but this is still a squad that needs further signings, in order to boost their chances of finishing in the top four this season.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

Midfield now feels like the biggest area of focus for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, and Manuel Ugarte is reportedly closing in on a move to Old Trafford from Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old was left out of his side's squad to face Montpellier on Friday evening, further suggesting that he has played his final game for them.

Should Ugarte not come in between now and deadline day next Friday, Fluminense enforcer Andre could be an alternative option, having been linked with a switch to United. The Brazil international is the same age as the Uruguayan and has been a rumoured target for Liverpool in the past.

Offer accepted for Man Utd "monster"

According to Il Mattino [via Sport Witness], Manchester United appear to have accepted a €25m (£21.1m) offer for Scott McTominay from Napoli, as his time at Old Trafford seemingly nears its conclusion after a fresh development.

It is claimed that the Scot has agreed on a four-year contract at the Serie A giants, with the fee mentioned above believed to include bonuses.

United supporters may be split about the club's decision to allow McTominay to leave, with some feeling he is an expendable figure and others seeing him as a squad player with an eye for goal from midfield.

The 27-year-old featured as a substitute in the defeat to Brighton, but the fact that he didn't start again highlighted his squad status, and with Ugarte or Andre potentially coming in as well in the near future, his minutes could be lessened further.

For that reason, it could be the right decision to move the £60,000-a-week-earning McTominay on, receiving a good amount of money for him in the process, and allowing him to be a regular elsewhere.

The idea of the Scotland international staying put at United certainly isn't a bad thing, should a deal not materialise in the coming days – he has been hailed as an "absolute monster" in the media – but the best outcome for all parties could be to see him head off for a new challenge at a key point in his career.
