Peter Della Penna25-Nov-2020Nepal captain Gyanendra Malla, along with vice-captain Dipendra Singh Airee and batsman Rohit Paudel, have all tested positive for Covid-19. The positive results were announced by Cricket Association of Nepal ahead of the start of a national team training camp at Tribhuvan University Stadium in Kathmandu.Malla, 30, took over as Nepal captain after Paras Khadka stepped down from the role in October 2019. Leeds keen on signing Gruev upgrade who’s played in the Champions League

Leeds United will have plenty of names drafted up on their shopping list, with every possibility mapped out as to who they can go after if a key member of the camp ends up leaving.

The likes of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville receiving interest this coming transfer window was to be expected, and many a suitor has already begun to test the waters with Daniel Farke's men, but Ilia Gruev being eyed up by recent Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund might have taken some by surprise.

If Leeds are to lose the Bulgarian midfielder in the summer, the German boss could be eyeing up a transfer reunion with one of his former Norwich City stars to plug this gap in the middle of the park, who could end up being a dream replacement down the line.

Leeds looking at Premier League midfielder

As per the Athletic, Leeds are eyeing up a move for Oliver Skipp to improve the holding midfield positions in West Yorkshire ahead of next season, with that not being the only new recruit they want to take from the North London titans.

The same report notes that Joe Rodon is also on Leeds' agenda, but that move could be dead in the water, owing to a new development suggesting Ipswich Town are in for the defender.

Leeds will hope they are at least successful in their pursuit of Skipp if Rodon doesn't end up relocating, with the 23-year-old only making five starts for his current employers in league action last season, and in dire need of breathing life back into his career consequently.

How Skipp fits into the Leeds team

Farke could be the perfect man to get Skipp back to his best, having managed the tenacious midfielder at Carrow Road during the 2020/21 season in the second tier, which ended in the Canaries being crowned as champions of the tricky division.

Helping himself to a place in the Championship Team of the Season off the back of his heroic displays in Norfolk, Farke will hope he's the missing piece of the jigsaw for his current Leeds side, in getting over their play-off final heartbreak and returning to the Premier League.

Gruev potentially exiting the club would also be forgotten about in an instant if Skipp did join the building, as well as offering Leeds another tough defensive midfield option, away from attempting to get Kalvin Phillips back.

Along the way to Norwich winning promotion, Skipp would garner the reputation for being a disruptor of play in the centre of the park, winning an average of 2.2 tackles per game, across his stellar 45 games.

Ilia Gruev

In contrast, Gruev would win just 1.6 per game last season, with Skipp taking over his duties like a duck to water, if he is signed up by Farke's men.

Blowing his Bulgarian counterpart out of the water in various other aspects of their midfield games, Skipp – who was referred to as being a "top player" by Farke during their Norwich days – could be a perfect recruit to reinvigorate a Leeds side down on their luck, to push on and go again next season.

He could well add another promotion to his career CV in the process if he does join, with Gruev simply a distant thought, if a move does end up being finalised.

Skipp – a player with six appearances to his name in the Champions League as a marker of his quality – will unlikely be the only bit of business Farke and Co make this coming transfer window, as Leeds look to strengthen ahead of another gruelling 46-game season, hopeful that they aren't broken again at the end of it all by slipping up once more.

Why Man Utd will be without EIGHT first-team stars for trip to face Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce – including captain Bruno Fernandes

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United's squad is stretched thin as they gear up to lock horns against Jose Mourinho's men on Thursday. One of the biggest concerns for the Red Devils is the midfield situation. With Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Dan Gore, and Toby Collyer all sidelined due to injury, and Bruno Fernandes suspended, United find themselves short of options in the middle of the park. Only Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, and Christian Eriksen are available as central midfielders, forcing Ten Hag to depend heavily on these three experienced players.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jonny Evans, who was instrumental in the weekend win against Brentford, has not trained since picking up an injury in that match. Meanwhile, other defenders including Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, and Leny Yoro happen to be long-term absentees.

In light of the injury concerns, teenage defenders Harry Amass and Habeeb Ogunneye have been called up to the squad. Both Amass, 17, and Ogunneye, 18, were named on the bench at the end of last season but have yet to make their senior debuts. With the team’s defence under strain, these young players could have an opportunity to prove their worth on the European stage.

  • WHAT ERIK TEN HAG SAID

Nonetheless, Ten Hag remained buoyant about United's chances and told reporters: "The players who are available have to do the job and they are capable of doing the job. I think we have enough players in the team that are so experienced. Our team is so experienced. We’ve faced such situations more often. I think we’re looking forward, I think it will be a great ambience that’s fuel for the team and it’s a real challenge, it’s a motivation, it’s really good for us."

The manager also shared an update on Mount and informed: "I think a bit longer [to wait for Mount], that's what we expected. I think he will be back soon."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Although UEFA allows up to 12 substitutes to be named on the bench for Europa League matches, Ten Hag has included only nine in his 20-man squad, which includes the two reserve goalkeepers, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton. This decision reflects the thinness of the squad and the limited options available to the United manager due to injuries.

Chelsea player ready to quit with Boehly prepared to take £60 million loss

A Chelsea player is aiming to leave Stamford Bridge and has his sights set on a specific destination, with chairman Todd Boehly also prepared to take a significant loss on him.

Players who could be sold by Chelsea this summer

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who are spearheading Chelsea's transfer plans this summer, have already made real progress in trimming Enzo Maresca's squad so far.

Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson and Ian Maatsen have all left Stamford Bridge, bringing in around £84 million in the process, and there are many more squad members tipped to follow them out of the door.

Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher are players who have been linked with Chelsea exits in the last few weeks alone, with the club making a concerted effort to find buyers.

Indeed, some reports have even claimed that Chelsea have offered Broja, Chukwuemeka, Ugochukwu and Chalobah to AC Milan during very recent talks over Romelu Lukaku.

The latter player is perhaps one man who Chelsea are desperate to get rid of. Lukaku, who cost the club around £98 million to re-sign from Inter Milan in 2021, has gone down as one of their most regrettable transfer mistakes in recent memory.

The Belgium star has spent more time away on loan than he has been donning the Blues jersey, having most recently enjoyed a season-long stint at Roma. Lukaku was back on a temporary spell at Inter the year before that, with Serie A appearing the striker's ideal match.

Boehly has set Lukaku's price tag at around £38 million, meaning Chelsea would be taking a £60 million loss if they find a permanent buyer. AC Milan have been locked in negotiations to sign Lukaku, as previously reported, but Antonio Conte could also offer him a fresh start at Napoli.

Lukaku wants to quit Chelsea for Serie A with Napoli now frontrunners

According to reports out of Spain, Napoli are now seen as the most likely destination for Lukaku over Milan, which is largely due to Conte's recent arrival at the club.

While the Rossoneri have been in negotiations for a while now, they've apparently struggled to reach an agreement – clearing the way for Napoli to advance on a deal for Lukaku instead. Napoli have previously been linked with Lukaku as a replacement for Osimhen, with the 31-year-old of a similar ilk in terms of positioning and stature, though not quite as clinical.

Lukaku, for his part, is aiming to return to Serie A and prefers Napoli over Milan.

“Right now, he is one of the best strikers in the world,” said Conte on Lukaku in 2021, during their time at Inter together.

“He already had important physical and technical skills, but in these two years we have made him progress even more. His presence in the match, his teamwork and clarity in front of goal [has improved]."

Wolves keen on "special" striker who could finally replace Raul Jimenez

Wolverhampton Wanderers had an impressive season in 2023/24, a campaign where many felt that they would be contenders for relegation.

This was a sentiment shared by many, notably the BBC’s chief football writer Phil McNulty, who predicted the Midlands side to finish 18th, and claimed he had a “very, very worrying feeling” about Gary O’Neil’s side.

Yet, Wolves defied the critics to finish an impressive 14th in the Premier League last season. They ended on 46 points, 20 points clear of the relegation zone, and were agonisingly close to a top-half finish. O’Neil’s team finished just three points behind tenth place Crystal Palace.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

Throughout their side, Wolves had some key contributions from their star players. Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha was their top goalscorer with 14 goals and also notched up an impressive eight assists.

Pedro Neto chipped in with 11 assists as well as getting himself on the scoresheet twice, and Hwang Hee-chan scored 13 goals and registered three assists too.

This season has given Wolves a superb platform to build from under O’Neil. They have already been linked with some players in the transfer window, although there is one player in particular who is thought to be of keen interest to the club.

Wolves target Premier League striker

The player in question here is Chelsea and Albania Armando Broja, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham. Now, the striker has thought to have been given the green light for a departure from Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Armando Broja

At least, that is according to reliable Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, who reports that Wolves are one of three Premier League sides, along with Everton and Southampton, who are all said to be interested in a deal for the Albanian, who will be at Euro 2024 this summer with his country.

However, Thomas explains in his report that none of the interested teams, including Wolves “currently cannot afford him” due to financial restraints on the current side. Thus, they would all “need to sell a player” in order to acquire his services.

Broja’s price is not yet confirmed, but he is valued at £16.8m by Football Observatory. With his contract at Stamford Bridge not set to expire until 2028, it seems unlikely he will cost any less than that, and Chelsea could even charge more, with talkSPORT reporting that they wanted £50m in January.

Why Broja would be a good signing

It is fair to say that Broja’s past two seasons have not gone as he would have hoped. Following two successful loan spells, with Vitesse where he scored ten league goals in the Netherlands, and Southampton where he scored six times in the Premier League, he returned to Chelsea but has struggled for opportunities.

He has played 25 times in the top flight for the Blues across two seasons, but has only scored twice, and failed to find the net for Fulham in eight appearances. Despite that, he is still a good centre-forward, with one content creator describing him as "special" back in 2022 when he was at Chelsea.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

That said, if Wolves sign Broja, he could finally prove to be their replacement for club-record Premier League goalscorer Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican was one of the best marksmen in the top flight for two seasons, scoring 13 goals in 2018/19 and 17 goals in 2019/20, before a sickening head injury against Arsenal, where he fractured his skull, kept him for eight months.

After his recovery, Jimenez played two more seasons at Wolves but departed last summer for Broja's loan club, Fulham.

They have struggled to find a proper centre-forward to replace him with, and although goals from Cunha have been crucial, it has at times felt like they have lacked a presence up front. They scored 50 goals in the Premier League last term which was better than only five clubs, as per Understat.

raul-jimenez-wolves

Broja could be the solution, the same aforementioned content creator saying that his “ball-striking and physicality” are two standout areas of his game. His physicality is certainly on show when taking defenders on. The Albania international averages 6.14 take-ons per 90 minutes and completes 2.49 of them per 90, both of which place him in the top 1% of attackers in Europe, as per Fbref.

Having a bullish, string centre-forward who take his chances in the box is exactly what this Wolves side could need to elevate them to the next level. It has been a great start to the project under O’Neil, and a signing like Broja could help them push for higher honours next season.

Chelsea are prepared to green-light the sale of a £200,000-per-week player, with new manager Enzo Maresca deciding that he prefers an alternative in the high-earner's position.

Players who could be sold by Chelsea this summer

Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson and Ian Maatsen come as the latest players to officially depart Stamford Bridge, but there could be many more who follow them out the Chelsea exit door.

Chelsea prepared to offer player £327,000-per-week to join them over Barcelona

They’re pushing to sign him.

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley have spearheaded an already-busy summer transfer window in these early weeks, putting pen to paper on deals for Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Brazilian wonderkid Estevao Willian, who'll join up next summer, for a combined total fee of around £105 million.

Todd Boehly's lavish spending since Clearlake's takeover of the club in 2022 means the squad has become quite bloated, though, so Chelsea will also be looking to balance the books further by offloading certain players.

Romelu Lukaku, Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, Carney Chukwuemeka, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher have all been named as players who could be sold by Chelsea, as the west Londoners seek to balance their books and free up space.

AC Milan have been locked in talks with Chelsea over both Lukaku and Chukwuemeka, according to reports in Italy, while England star Gallagher is reportedly attracting interest from Premier League rivals amid his precarious contract situation.

Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

There has also been some speculation in regard to Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell, with the pair set to battle it out for Maresca's favour. The left-back spot is up for grabs, but some believe Cucurella is actually perfect for Maresca's system and could stand to really benefit from his arrival.

Chilwell, who has captained Chelsea in flashes when available, suffered from a real injury nightmare last season. The Englishman missed 23 games in the Premier League alone due to problems with his hamstring, knee and illness (Transfermarkt), and that ultimately cost Chilwell a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2024.

Chelsea prepared to green-light Chilwell sale after Maresca decision

It was a season to forget for the ex-Leicester City star, with TEAMtalk sharing an update on his future this week. The outlet claims Chelsea are prepared to green-light Chilwell's sale this summer, in the event of a suitable offer, with Maresca deciding he prefers Cucurella for the main left-back slot.

They're apparently ready to listen to bids and will entertain exit talks, four years after he swapped the King Power for west London in a £45 million move. The £200,000-per-week earner has gone on to make 106 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role in parts, and helped to guide Chelsea to a Champions League title in 2021.

A case that took over 18 months to be heard – with allegations of supposed financial mismanagement first being revealed in February 2023 – is in the process of being worked through. City are waiting to discover their fate, with a ruling expected to be delivered by the end of the calendar year.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

There has been talk of the record-setting champions of England – who have captured a top-flight crown in each of the last four seasons – being hit with the harshest of punishments. That could see them expelled from the Premier League, or the EFL as a whole, while there has also been talk of points deductions and transfer embargoes.

gettyWHAT HAMANN SAID

Former City midfielder Dietmar Hamann cannot see Pep Guardiola’s being stripped of their top-flight status, telling of a long-running saga: “The Premier League will have no interest in making Manchester City leave the league, you have to wait and see with these court cases. There has to be a level playing field, the football leagues are about competition, and you need more than three or four teams to be able to win the league. I'm not sure what will happen to Manchester City if they are found guilty of the 115 charges, but the rules need to be listened to so every club can have a chance of success.”

Le Bris could ditch Sunderland ace who earns more than Bellingham

Sunderland fans won't quite know what to expect from the new Frenchman occupying the Black Cats dug-out now, with Regis Le Bris joining from Lorient to put an end to the lack of a permanent boss troubling those on Wearside.

Fresh off relegation in Ligue 1, before walking away to move to England, Le Bris will be judged solely on how he copes with the pressures of Championship football.

Yet, the Sunderland fanbase will be wanting and almost demanding a much improved season ahead, after finishing in a dire 16th spot last campaign.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

That will be easier said than done, however, with the pressures of the Sunderland job post proving too much for some in recent memory, but the relative unknown entity in the Black Cats hot-seat could begin to endear himself to his new set of supporters if he was to get rid of a forgotten, injury-prone figure soon.

Dennis Cirkin's time at Sunderland

Once a promising first-team gem at the Stadium of Light, it's fair to say Dennis Cirkin's career for the Wearside outfit is now a sorry state of affairs.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youth product had an extremely productive 22/23 campaign, before becoming plagued with injuries this season just finished, with five goals managed from down the left-flank.

Since then, however, Cirkin has found himself regularly in and out of the treatment room at Sunderland, with only eight games managed in the Championship during the entirety of the 23/24 season.

That caused a whole host of issues for the struggling Black Cats consequently, with a lack of a nailed-down left-back making this a problem area for the various different managers that walked in and out of Sunderland before Les Bris' arrival.

It remains to be seen whether the injury-prone 22-year-old is in Les Bris' plans going forward, with the likes of Leo Hjelde and Aji Alese at his disposal at left-back as well, with Cirkin's excessive wage a potential factor as to why Sunderland could be prepared to offload the ex-Spurs defender soon.

Cirkin's wage at Sunderland

As per Capology, Cirkin's salary at Sunderland currently stands at a handsome £10k-per-week, meaning he earns the same amount as Anthony Patterson in-between the sticks at the Black Cats, despite Patterson being everpresent last season in the league, minus the final day.

Cirkin's hefty pay packet actually remarkably makes him a higher earner than wanted man Jobe Bellingham, who earns just £6.5k-per-week, even with the 18-year-old being fresh off a breakthrough season at the Stadium of Light.

Plenty more will be presumably expected of him under Les Bris' guidance, after picking up seven goals and a solitary assist from 47 appearances during his debut season.

1. Jack Clarke

2. Daniel Ballard

£15k-per-week

4. Patrick Roberts

£12.5k-per-week

5. Anthony Patterson

£10k-per-week

£10k-per-week

Sunderland have shown they won't hesitate in binning off high earners too, as seen in Bradley Dack being let go of on the club's recent retained list, who earned an excessive £15k-per-week.

Cirkin could be the next for the chop, therefore, with Sunderland hoping that another club would gamble on his services if they were to put him up for sale, hoping that he can become injury-free again and shine.

Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin.

Le Bris might well see something in Cirkin this pre-season, on the contrary, and pray that he can be a star under his tenure, but the former Tottenham man's spell playing at the Stadium of Light could soon be over, especially if more unfortunate injuries come his way.

Le Bris must instantly ditch Sunderland gem who's worth more than Neil

New Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris could well be cutthroat when it comes to this midfielder.

Reports say India don’t want to travel to Brisbane for fear of being put into another hard quarantine

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jan-2021Matthew Wade has affirmed that Australia are planning for the fourth Test to go ahead in Brisbane as scheduled. His comments on Sunday followed media reports that the Indian squad doesn’t want to travel to Brisbane because of potentially stricter health protocols.Though he said he had not heard about the Indians’ stance from any official quarters, Wade told a press gathering, “We’d prefer not to (tweak the schedule). The schedule has been rolled out and we would prefer to stick to that. There was speculation about staying in Melbourne. CA [Cricket Australia] have been firm that we’ll stick to the schedule that we rolled out at the start of the summer, so I would expect us to go to the Gabba regardless of if that’s more of a quarantine-based hotel-ground-come home. “It is what it is. Going into this summer, I copped some criticism for taking some time in the first half of the Shield season to spend time with my family because the reality was we didn’t know what was going to happen going forward. It’s not ideal, we’d all love to be running around outside as everyone in Australia would love to be doing that right now. We understand that we’ll have to make some sacrifices to get this tour done. But I knew that coming in. We all knew we’d get some curveballs and this is just one of them.”If the series were to head to Queensland as planned, both teams would likely be put in a position where they only leave their hotel for training or the match itself because of the state’s border being closed to Greater Sydney and exemptions being needed for them to enter. “If they come to Queensland after having been in declared hotspots, they will have to quarantine,” Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young said on Sunday. “These are people who are coming from Sydney and we are seeing, as late as yesterday, an unlinked case in Sydney. There is clearly transmission happening in the community down there. So we do need to have those arrangements firmly in place.”

“For us as group we are going to Sydney, we’ll play the SCG, then we’ll go to Brisbane and play the Gabba until the powers that be knock on the door and tell us that’s going to change.”Matthew Wade

Sections of the media had reported that sources within the Indian set-up mooted the suggestion of staying on in Sydney, the venue for the third Test, for the final game too. Five Indian players – Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Navdeep Saini – are already in isolation in Melbourne as a precaution, pending an investigation into a social-media video that purportedly showed them eating in a Melbourne restaurant indoors.”Perhaps if [Cricket Australia] had gone somewhere else [for the third Test] they wouldn’t have had to quarantine when they came to Queensland,” Young said. “That’s a decision they have made. They have their reasons and I’m very, very happy to work with them.”The Indian players were in a bio-secure bubble in the UAE during the IPL, and endured a hard quarantine when they arrived in Australia, which made way which made way for another bubble but with loser restrictions. The Australians who were in the IPL and are also part of the Test squad have faced the same conditions, although some have been given short breaks.”I’m sure there is [a concern] for some players, there’s no difference to people coming home internationally and having to do hard quarantine,” Wade said. “It’s not an ideal situation. There’s not much we can do about it, if that’s what the government are going to make us do to play a game at the Gabba then we’re willing to sacrifice. A lot of players knew it wasn’t going to be an ideal situation and if something went south we’d have to make some more sacrifices along the way. As a group, we understand that, we are just keen to get started, get to Sydney then roll into Brisbane whatever that looks like.Ajinkya Rahane and Shubman Gill celebrate India’s series-levelling win in Melbourne•Getty Images”From my position and our position there is no uncertainty. There’s a lot of talk out there, we understand that, but for us as group we are going to Sydney, we’ll play the SCG, then we’ll go to Brisbane and play the Gabba until the powers that be knock on the door and tell us that’s going to change. It’s out of our control.”For Australia, the Gabba is one of their favourite playing fields, where they haven’t lost a Test since November 1988, when Viv Richards’ West Indies beat them by nine wickets. Since then, there have been seven draws and 24 wins for the home side. The last Test India played in Brisbane, in December 2014, went the way of the home team too, by four wickets.”There’s no secret we like starting the summer there for that exact reason,” Wade said. “Our record is very good there and we tend to play good cricket. India have a great bowling line-up and a great team, so we certainly won’t take it for granted when we get there but we’d love to play at the Gabba.”If it went two games back-to-back at the SCG it would not be something we’d want to do, we’d be much more comfortably playing the schedule as it rolls out. There’s no secret we love the Gabba and want to get there.”The Indians are currently in Melbourne, where they won the second Test to level the series 1-1, and are expected to travel to Sydney on January 4 ahead of the third Test, starting January 7. They will travel to Brisbane after that on a chartered flight ahead of the final Test, slated to begin on January 15.
