Newcastle now eyeing move to sign "brilliant" competition for Nick Pope

Newcastle United have found out the hard way this season when it comes to the quality needed to compete on every front. The Magpies' summer recruitment has failed to pay dividends and now they're set to go again in the hope of making up for lost time, with one man already on the shortlist.

Newcastle transfer news

Before anything, PIF will need to find a replacement for sporting director Dan Ashworth, who has been placed on gardening leave amid links with a move to Manchester United.

Newcastle have now held talks over two new surprise St James’ Park deals

The duo have struggled for minutes this season.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 8, 2024

Darren Eales, Newcastle United CEO, confirmed the news, telling the club's official website: "We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave, however our exciting journey doesn't stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately. We thank Dan for his efforts at Newcastle United and we wish him and his family well for the future."

Whoever takes up the role next will be tasked with taking those at St James' Park back to the heights of last season, when they finished inside the Premier League's top four and qualified for the Champions League. To do that, the Magpies would be wise to turn to players who have experienced that top level, including one summer target.

According to Dean Jones, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Aaron Ramsdale, who has fallen out of favour at Arsenal this season and needs a move elsewhere if he is to gain crucial minutes.

"Brilliant" Ramsdale would face similar problems at Newcastle

At a crossroads in his career, Ramsdale must get his next move right and it must result in a consistent starting place. And that should rule Newcastle out. The England international has already lost his place at Arsenal to David Raya and a move to St James' Park would hand him a similar obstacle in displacing Nick Pope.

Pope, currently out injured, is Eddie Howe's clear number one, which is unlikely to change with the arrival of Ramsdale.

It remains to be seen just how much of a fight Arsenal will put up to keep Ramsdale too, with Mikel Arteta singing his praises earlier this season, saying via Arsenal Insider: “He’s fully prepared. He’s training really well every day. He’s desperate to play, like rest of the boys that haven’t had many opportunities.

“Saturday is a great day for him. It’s a joy to have 2 top goalkeepers in the team. He’s been brilliant, really supportive. Pushing every day in training, like I expected.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Slovenia antics are definitive proof it’s time for Portugal to move on after Euro 2024 – if not before

The legendary forward was determined to make the last-16 tie all about him, and his nation undoubtedly suffered as a result

Cristiano Ronaldo's performance against Slovenia on Monday – and performance is certainly a fitting word for it – left viewers in the stadium and beyond utterly baffled; the star of his own one-man show, the Portugal captain made Frankfurt's Waldstadion the stage for his melodrama in the last 16 of Euro 2024.

Ineffective in open play against Slovenia's dogged defence and low block, the 39-year-old instead resorted to peppering their goal from free-kicks with varying degrees of farce as he commanded every set-piece his side were awarded. Frustrated in 90 minutes, Ronaldo's long-awaited golden opportunity finally presented itself from the penalty spot in the first half of extra-time, but rather than wheeling away in celebration, he was dramatically reduced to tears as his effort was brilliantly kept out by Jan Oblak.

The veteran's blushes would be saved in an eventual shootout triumph, as goalkeeper Diogo Costa emerged as Portugal's hero ahead of his captain with three fine stops. However, this felt like a watershed moment for Ronaldo. "It's football, those who fail are those who try too," he said afterwards. "I will always do my best for this shirt, whether I fail or not. You can't be afraid, I've never been afraid to face things head on, sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don't, but giving up is something you'll never hear from my name."

He may not be ready to throw in the towel, but this was the latest in a long line of evidence to suggest it's time Portugal and manager Roberto Martinez moved on from the Ronaldo show, as he desperately clings on to past glories; their hopes at Euro 2024 may depend on it.

GettyStruggling main character

Whatever the outcome, hero or villain, it seems Ronaldo was hellbent on making Monday about him. We are all accustomed to his histrionics by now as he aims spluttering fits of frustration at his team-mates and the referee, and screams at himself in self-motivation, but this display had a particularly desperate edge to it as he looked to respond to his critics and right the wrongs of his tournament so far.

That desperation was epitomised by his laughable determination to take every single free-kick Portugal were awarded; 30 yards out, 40 yards out, 50 yards out – it didn't matter, Ronaldo was having it, and Ronaldo was shooting. The most absurd of all his efforts came late in the first half, as he took aim from a ridiculously tight angle – not too far from the corner flag – and ballooned the set-piece miles wide. There was no real sign of an apology, and rather more concerningly, it seemed his compatriots didn't expect one.

To his credit, the veteran did go closer with a couple of other dead-ball attempts – one that sailed just over the crossbar and another that was beaten away by Oblak, and the Slovenia goalkeeper saved well when he was played through late on.

However, Portugal's toiling talisman has now attempted more shots at Euro 2024 that any other player (20) without scoring, and that's despite having an xG (expected goals) of 2.96 as his major tournament goal drought (eight games) goes on. He has netted just one free-kick out of 60 taken at major tournaments, including more than twice as many direct free-kicks at the Euros than any other player since records began in 1980.

AdvertisementGettyTears of desperation

Then there is the moment that will join Antonin Panenka's penalty and Paul Gascoigne's 'dentist's chair' in the annals of European Championship history – one that we will see repeated again and again and again.

After Slovenia had admirably held their opponents in 90 minutes, Ronaldo was offered a chance for redemption when substitute Diogo Jota was downed in the box late in the first half of extra-time. Of course it was their No.7 who stepped up after a long delay, but his strike was brilliantly saved by Oblak.

If that wasn't dramatic enough, Ronaldo was unable to keep a lid on his emotions as the whistle blew for half-time in the extra period, breaking down in tears with the world's eyes on him. After 105 minutes of football where he had been determined to hog the limelight, this breakdown felt like an untimely distraction from the task at hand from Portugal's most experienced campaigner, with his younger team-mates forced to gee him up for the restart.

His tears drew widespread criticism, and it felt like the strain of clinging on to his past exploits was proving too much. At 39 years of age and given his ineffectiveness at Euro 2024 so far, Ronaldo surely shouldn't even have been on the pitch to miss the spot-kick in the first place, with many left wondering what the ever-reliable Bruno Fernandes must have been thinking.

Getty'Inexplicable moments'

Fortunately for the Portugal captain, his blushes were saved as the game went to a penalty shootout. He converted his spot-kick before goalkeeper Costa emerged as the hero by denying all three Slovenia efforts in a swift 3-0 victory.

Having offered a meek apology to the supporters after somewhat making amends in the shootout, Ronaldo was at a loss to explain his tears after the game was finally over. "Even the strongest people have their (bad) days," he told reporters. "I was at rock bottom when the team needed me most.

"Initial sadness and joy at the end, that’s what football gives you. These are inexplicable moments. I had the chance to put the national team ahead and I didn’t manage it. Oblak made a good save. I had to review the penalty, I don’t know if I shot well or badly, but during the year I didn’t miss a single time and when I needed it most, Oblak saved it. The most important thing is to enjoy qualifying, the team did an extraordinary job, we fought until the end and if you analyse the match well, Portugal deserved it because they had more chances."

GettyNeglected alternatives

Given he is blessed with a squad that is packed full of attacking talent, it is difficult not to question Martinez's blind faith in the misfiring Ronaldo – even if he did plunder an extraordinary 50 goals in the evidently weaker Saudi Pro League in the club season and regardless of being Portugal men's all-time leading goal-scorer.

Jota, Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Goncalo Ramos – who famously scored a hat-trick against Switzerland when he was picked ahead of Ronaldo at the 2022 World Cup – were all on the bench initially despite playing their club football at a higher level, with only the former being introduced as a substitute. The Liverpool man would replace Rafael Leao rather than his struggling skipper, though.

Felix and Ramos, 24 and 23, respectively, should surely have been given an opportunity as the future of Portugal's attack, with either more than capable of providing a spark and making a difference against an opponent that was content to sit deep. Instead, Portugal looked handicapped with Ronaldo isolated and frustrated. Jota demonstrated the alternative when he came on, running at the heart of the Slovenian defence and winning that fateful penalty.

There were the signs of a transition from the Ronaldo era beginning under former Portugal manager Fernando Santos as he showed a readiness to bench the iconic forward, but while results have generally been positive, they have taken a step back under Ronaldo advocate Martinez.

Tottenham told they have a youngster with similarities to James Maddison

Tottenham have been told there is a very promising youngster at the club with "similarities" to star first-teamer James Maddison.

Spurs academy prospering with Postecoglou set to give youth chance

The north Londoners are placing a growing importance on youth development, with Ange Postecoglou set to give many opportunities to aspiring prodigies during his tenure.

Tottenham "feel" they can make "game-changer" signing for around £45m

The north Londoners are already devising summer transfer plans.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 27, 2024

That is according to the club's academy director, Simon Davies, who also says that Postecoglou is changing the very culture of N17 internally.

"We have roughly a biweekly meeting but we speak in between ad hoc," explained Davies on Postecoglou's youth policy (Off the Shelf podcast via fl).

"Obviously he is busy with all the first-team stuff going on but he always gives you that time. That's what I mean by the class of the man and the impact he's had around the place. It has to be a close relationship but my job as well is I've got to make sure the players are good enough and they are around it right now. It is tough and the reality is our young players have got to be better than what's in the first team. It's the same around the country. There's no God-given right to get in our first team, it's a tough point to achieve in your career but the manager I know for sure will give opportunities as and when the time is right.

"You talk about the lads getting around the bench, part of that is because they have merited it and part of that is because of the injuries. There's always that factor there, but they've got to do it consistently. It doesn't just come because you've done it for a month, you have to do it consistently just for the next 20 odd years. That's the level."

Postecoglou has already praised the likes of Alfie Dorrington and Jamie Donley this season, with both featuring in the first-team squad. The latter has bagged nine assists and four goals over 10 Premier League 2 appearances this season, with Donley seen as a player of real promise at Spurs.

Donley has "similarities" to Maddison

As per journalist Charlie Eccleshare, speaking on The View From The Lane podcast, as transcribed by TBR, Donley actually has "similarities" to Maddison in terms of personality – which certainly bodes well for his potential star power in future seasons.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison applauding supporters.

“Everyone speaks about his versatility, I’ve been told he can play as a 10, an eight, a right winger, he played one game for the academy last season as a centre-back, he is technically outstanding," said Eccleshare.

"From what I’m told he has that aura and confidence, not arrogance, but that thing the best players have, a bit like James Maddison, and maybe there are some similarities between those two as well."

Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan to go ahead as planned

Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan will go ahead after SLC confirmed that the Pakistan government had “reaffirmed” its desire to provide the Sri Lanka team with the same level of security afforded to visiting heads of state.”The Pakistan High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, on behalf of the Pakistan Government, has reaffirmed to the Sri Lankan government Pakistan’s desire to provide the Sri Lankan National Team with the same level of security as that provided to a head of state,” SLC Secretary Mohan De Silva stated. The tour had been thrown into serious doubt last week after a warning of a terror attack on the Sri Lankan team was received by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s Office. Following this, SLC deferred any fresh security assessment to the Sri Lankan government. The PCB, thereafter, engaged the Pakistan government, which wrote to the Sri Lankan government assuring head-of-state-level security to the visiting team. It is understood that the Pakistan high commissioner to Sri Lanka was actively in touch with the Sri Lankan defence secretary as part of confidence-building.An SLC release said Sri Lanka’s ministry of defence had confirmed that it had received no information “through any Intelligence Agency indicating a threat to the Sri Lanka National Team or to the said tour” and that “no information has been received by the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pakistan, indicating a threat to the Sri Lanka National Team or to the said tour.”The release detailed that the letter from the Pakistan government had made these assurances: that “[The] Government of Pakistan will ensure highest consideration of security to [the] visiting cricket team”, “[The] Pakistan Army will coordinate the security arrangements” and “Security protocol will be compatible to [a] Head of State.”Before news of the possible terror threat emerged, SLC had been happy with its own security assessments, and had committed to the tour, announcing ODI and T20I squads shorn of ten prominent names who had refused to travel to Pakistan.Through all the uncertainty, Pakistan have continued working towards their preparation for the series, naming 20 probables for the series, settling on their team-management group, and reaffirming their faith in their captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. The PCB had also issued visa supporting letters for the Sri Lankan players and officials. Arrangements at the stadiums have also been beefed up, and tickets for the matches will go up for sale starting tonight. The PCB had refused to shift the series to a neutral venue, with chairman Ehsan Mani reiterating his confidence in Pakistan hosting Sri Lanka later this month. With this series going ahead, Pakistan will be hosting their longest bilateral series in a decade. The National Stadium in Karachi will host the ODIs, while the T20Is will be held at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. These will be the first ODIs to take place in Pakistan since Zimbabwe toured for a three-match ODI series in 2015; all the international cricket here since the 2017 PSL final has been in the form of T20Is.GMT 1410 The story has been updated with information from SLC’s press release.

WBBL will be 'a fantastic opportunity' – Nida Dar

The opportunity, she says, will help her raise her game before the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020

Umar Farooq03-Oct-2019

Featuring in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is going to be “a fantastic opportunity” for Nida Dar after she became the first Pakistan women’s player to be signed for the league, by Sydney Thunder. The opportunity, she says, will help her raise her game as the Women’s T20 World Cup is less than six months away.Dar, 32, has played 96 T20Is and 71 ODIs, her last series being the T20I matches in South Africa where she finished with five wickets and scored 192 runs in five matches. Her T20I strike rate of 96.27 is the highest for a Pakistan women’s player among those who have batted at least five times in the format.”This is a great honour to represent Pakistan in a league where all top cricketers are playing in Australia,” Dar told ESPNcricinfo. “Being a first Pakistani to be there is wonderful for me and for the country. It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I will the make best out of it. This is not only going to help me raise my game personally but I will be learning a lot…game plans, thought process and all my experience is going to help my [Pakistan] team-mates.”The basics of cricket are the same everywhere but it’s the standard and the competition level that makes a difference. Big Bash is an amazing league and playing in it with all the top players in the world in one place is what any player dreams of. The standard indeed is one step ahead of us in Pakistan so with this opportunity I know I have to play hard and after the season I will bring back a lot of experience which is going to help everyone here.”The door opened for Dar after India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t renew her ties with the Thunder as India’s month-long tour of the Caribbean is going to clash with the WBBL, and the Indian players, including Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, wanted to manage their workload before the T20 World Cup early next year. Harmanpreet had been a key player in the Thunder line-up since the 2016-17 season.”I have a great regard for Harmanpreet Kaur…she is a top player and someone I look up to,” Dar said. “I know I am going to replace her in the squad and I understand the level of expectations from me. I have worked so hard over the years and I’m in my prime form. The balance between my batting and bowling is very important. I do enjoy my batting but it’s more about the role what I am asked to play. I adapt quickly. Harmanpreet is a wonderful player with sound technique and her power-hitting is amazing. I know the challenge and filling in for her will be a great responsibility and I will try not to make them miss her.”The grounds [in Australia] are a lot bigger and one has to adapt to that. But the ball skids very fast there too, with the bounce and that is ideal [for batting]. You don’t need to push hard while batting, it is about technique and timing the ball. I am prepared for the challenge.”Dar is one of Pakistan’s most experienced players, having made her international debut in 2010, and has been one of their main players in the last decade. No Pakistan woman has taken more T20I wickets than her 88, and she ranks fourth in ODIs with 66 wickets after Sana Mir, Sadia Yousuf and Asmavia Iqbal.”I am in the 30s now but with the kind of exposure I have, I am more sensible and in control of my game,” she said. “It’s not about age actually, it’s about the passion and fitness required for the game and the guidance by my coaching staff. That is pushing me in the right direction. Fitness has become a top priority these days and no matter what age you are, you have to be fit.”Fitness is going to dictate how long you can play. I have lost weight recently, I was 62.5kgs and I have lost almost 6.5kgs in one week and now I am more active than ever.”Pakistan women’s next assignment is against Bangladesh – from October 26 to November 4 – and the PCB has exempted Dar from the series so that she gets T20 exposure with international players in the WBBL ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2020.

49ers in "very tough" negotiation to sell £11m Leeds player permanently

As the 49ers Enterprises attempt to get Leeds United's house in order ahead of a potential return to the Premier League, one of the big decisions for the ownership is what to do with the players currently plying their trade away from Elland Road.

Leeds' loanees set for uncertain future

Sitting at the top of the Championship table for the first time this season, Daniel Farke's side are on course to start preparing for life back in the top flight. Whilst everything could change in the final passages of the season, deals are already being negotiated for individuals surplus to requirements in West Yorkshire.

"I'm told" – Leeds United target open to joining on promotion condition

Daniel Farke’s side have further incentive for promotion.

ByBen Browning Mar 11, 2024

A number of the individuals sent on temporary moves away from Elland Road are set to be moved on at the end of the season. Jack Harrison could make his deal with Everton permanent with a £20m fee cited for the winger. Marc Roca is currently on loan in his native Spain with the midfielder destined for another move this summer.

Ian Poveda and Cody Drameh are both currently on loan at fellow Championship sides with the duo expected to have played their final games for Leeds. With the majority of the Whites' on-loan players possibly leaving during the next transfer window, reports are now suggesting the next man to be shown the door at Elland Road.

49ers negotiating move for Wober exit

As first reported on the X account of Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Max Wober could depart Leeds this summer. The defender is currently on loan at Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach with the club eager to make the deal permanent following the 26-year-old's displays this season.

Wober has made 23 appearances for Monchengladbach this season as the side sit comfortably mid-table in the Bundesliga. With the defender now a mainstay in Gerardo Seoane's side, there is no wonder why there is a great appetite to make the deal permanent.

Owing to the progression in their pursuit of Joe Rodon, Leeds would likely be open to letting Wober leave, but Plettenberg claims that "the negotiation with Leeds United is very tough". The journalist states that the Whites would want between £8.5million and £10.5million to secure the deal with the German side reluctant to match the fee at this time.

Wober arrived at Elland Road following an £11million move from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023. With the Austrian seemingly surplus to requirements with his parent club, it appears that the only thing between Wober and his permanent move is the hard bargain being driven by the Leeds ownership.
