Sam Hain's 145* sets up another dominant Lions win

ScorecardSam Hain hit a career-best unbeaten 145, then Chris Jordan and Liam Dawson combined to wreck the West Indies A reply, as England Lions romped to a second impressive victory in consecutive days at the 3aaa County Ground in Derby. After beating India by seven wickets in the opening match of the A-team tri-series on Friday, the Lions chose to bat first on the same pitch, and Hain anchored a total of 318 for 5, in which Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Steven Mullaney also made half centuries. Then Jordan opened with a double-wicket maiden, going on to take 3 for 25 from eight overs – perfect preparation before joining the senior England squad for Wednesday’s T20 international against Australia at Edgbaston.Dawson, who had taken 4 for 30 against India, followed up with 4 for 27, setting a new best on home soil for a spinner for the Lions or the England A or B teams who preceded them for the second day running.Jermaine Blackwood had given the Windies a promising start with 40 from 33 balls in an opening stand of 50 until he edged Jordan’s fifth ball to Ben Foakes. His opening partner Chandrapaul Hemraj made 35 until he fell lbw sweeping at Dawson, the captain Jason Mohammed hit five fours and a six in his 52, and Rovman Powell provided some late defiance by top-scoring with 55 from 50 balls – until he holed out off Reece Topley, who polished off the last three wickets. The Lions made a bad start after Mullaney’s decision to bat, with Nick Gubbins brought down to earth after Friday’s century when he fell for a four-ball duck, edging a good one from Chemar Holder to Devon Thomas behind the stumps. But Hain joined Kohler-Cadmore to add 148 in 28 overs – beating the new record for the second wicket against India A which Hain had set with Gubbins 24 hours earlier.Batting was not easy, especially against Jomel Warrican and Rahkeem Cornwall, the two spinners who had terrorised the Lions in Jamaica and Antigua in the winter. But Kohler-Cadmore and Hain both adapted to the tricky pitch and played with patience.Hain was the first to 50 from 61 balls in the 22nd over and Kohler-Cadmore followed shortly afterwards, and the Yorkshire opener broke the shackles by taking a six off each of the spinners as he reached 67 from 87 balls before carving Warrican to backward point.Liam Livingstone and Ben Foakes both fell cheaply to leave the Lions tottering on 161 for 4 in the 32nd over – Livingstone lofting Cornwall to deep mid wicket, and Foakes run out by a sharp piece of fielding from Mohammed. But Mullaney joined Hain to add a restorative 95 for the fifth wicket, initially playing with caution before pulling consecutive sixes as he reached 50 from 46 balls.Meanwhile Hain made West Indies A pay heavily for dropping caught-and-bowled chances when he had scored 13 and 56, reaching three figures in the 42nd over from 114 balls with nine fours. That was his second century in four innings for the Lions, after he made 144 on debut against West Indies in Antigua in March, and the 22-year-old surged level with that score with four consecutive boundaries in the last over before scrambling a single to beat it – as the visiting bowlers showed their inexperience in leaking 123 from the last 10 overs. The Lions are now sitting pretty at the top of the tri-series table with four points from two matches, meaning one more win in their remaining two matches – against India A in Leicester on Tuesday, or Windies A in Northampton on Thursday – would secure their place in the final at the Kia Oval on Monday week

Durham complete improbable comeback

Bowled out for 96 in their first innings, Durham turned the match in spectacular fashion to banish Derbyshire’s hopes of moving into promotion contention

Somerset chase down Notts to top Division One

ScorecardDurham completed an improbable comeback against Derbyshire to defeat the visitors by 95 runs in their Specsavers County Championship Division Two match at Emirates Riverside.Chris Rushworth led the way with the ball with figures of 5 for 47 to take the final six wickets needed in the morning session, although he was aided by Matt Salisbury with four strikes, while Nathan Rimmington also registered a wicket. It was a brilliant comeback from the home side, who looked down and out after their first innings when they were bowled out for 96. Derbyshire appeared to be within sight of victory on day two when they had Durham six down, with a lead of only 46.However, an inspired effort from Gareth Harte turned the course of the game as he notched his maiden first-class century to turn the momentum in favour of the north-east outfit. Derbyshire were unable to respond as Rushworth along with the rest of the Durham pace attack were able to wrap up the victory and claim their second win in the County Championship of the 2018 season.Rushworth was happy to parade his joy. “It’s incredible. You look back and think where we were at the end of day one and we were miles behind. You don’t have to go too far back to see another result like this with the Leicestershire game. Again we were nowhere in that game and that showed how much fighting spirit we’ve got in the dressing room.”It’s an amazing win and I think it shows what it means to play for this club. Guys are coming to play for Durham and are fighting with everything that they’ve got. They want to win and they want to wear this shirt. It’s a great sign for Durham. It’s wins from situations like that are amazing to be involved in.”Derbyshire began day 69 for 4 in need of a huge effort from their middle and lower order. Their plans was disrupted almost immediately when Rushworth made the first breakthrough of the morning of day four when he removed Callum Brodrick with a fine delivery that just took the outside edge before travelling through to Ryan Davies. Daryn Smit was dropped first ball by Michael Jones in the slip cordon, but he lasted another four deliveries before he was pinned lbw by Matt Salisbury.Ben Slater remained composed at the other end of the pitch, reaching his fifty off 93 balls. However, he lost another partner when Hardus Viljoen was bowled by Nathan Rimmington for 10.Rushworth returned to the attack before lunch and forced a mistake from Tony Palladino, but Will Smith could not hold the catch at gully. However, Salisbury’s return was greeted with the crucial strike of Slater, clean bowling the Derbyshire opener for 68.Rushworth notched his fourth strike of the innings when he bowled Alfie Gleadall for two to bring the home side within one wicket of victory. The seamer could have notched a five-wicket haul to end the game as Duanne Olivier edged his first delivery to Smith at gully, but for the second time of the morning session, the fielder failed to come up with the catch.Olivier and Palladino scored late boundaries to frustrate the Durham bowlers, but Rushworth ended the game when he had Olivier out lbw to secure the victory for the home side.

West Ham: Moyes had a nightmare on "incredible" £14m star who is now worth £129m

The West Ham United faithful will be most pleased with how the east London side has finally unearthed the formula for lasting success under David Moyes' tutelage, having spent so many interminable years mired in mediocrity.

Having now cemented their position in the Premier League as European challengers, West Ham are well-placed to remain at the right end of the division for years to come.

One of the most important aspects behind the newfound feats is the success gleaned on the transfer front, with the dark days of misfires now over, for the most part.

That's not to say that the club haven't missed out on their fair share of targets, however, with none so detrimental that the decision not to sign Julian Alvarez, before the first-class star moved to Manchester City.

Why didn't West Ham sign Julian Alvarez?

Hailed for his “incredible threat” by Pep Guardiola, Alvarez is known to Premier League football as one of its most exciting attackers, but Moyes didn't feel that his signature was worth procuring back in 2021.

Speaking earlier this year on the Diary of a CEO Podcast, the Scottish gaffer revealed that he hired a scout who held deep knowledge of Argentinian football and recommended the 23-year-old, and while Moyes looked into the player and was left impressed by his technical skills, he opted out.

West Ham United'sMichailAntoniocelebrates after the match

This is due to the form of Michail Antonio, who had started the 2021/22 Premier League season in odd-defying form, plundering four goals and three assists from his first three matches.

Stellar stuff, but not enough to eclipse the prowess of Alvarez. However, Moyes didn't think so and indeed chose to maintain proceedings with the veteran at the spearhead.

How much did Manchester City pay for Julian Alvarez?

Manchester City completed the signing of Alvarez from Argentinian outfit River Plate for around £14m in January 2022 – likely the fee he could have cost the Hammers – with the player remaining in his homeland on loan until the summer.

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain lauded Alvarez's dynamism and predicted he would become a "top player" in the future, something that, frankly, he's more than well on the way to achieving.

How much is Julian Alvarez worth now?

For those who have followed Alvarez's displays over the past year, or more, there will be a feeling that he is not yet the finished article, and considering the fact that he now plays a more prominent role in the Sky Blues' team, this is probably justified.

Regardless, he's already considered among the best of the best in world football, with CIES Football Observatory's valuation model actually providing him with a £129m price tag.

This is, frankly, staggering, and while the figure feels somewhat exorbitant, there's no denying that the increments he has made to his game already warrant a place among the very best rising stars that football has to offer.

It signifies an awe-inspiring 821% rise in valuation in less than two years, which is, really, fairytale stuff. Not only has Alvarez played an integral role but he has swiftly established himself as one of the most talented stars across European competition.

Given West Ham's proven prowess in investing aptly after a big sale (Declan Rice to Arsenal, £105m), there's no telling how much use could have been made from Alvarez had he signed.

Why is Julian Alvarez worth that much?

Alvarez's arrival in Manchester was somewhat overshadowed by the exciting acquisition of Erland Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, with the prodigious frontman joining after his £51m release clause was paid.

That being said, Alvarez still enjoyed an impressive maiden campaign, scoring 17 goals and supplying five assists from 49 matches across all competitions, starting only 23 of those.

Winning the European treble, the 24-cap Argentinian dynamo has since been called "superb" by colour commentator Ally McCoist and will hardly regret the fact that he didn't move to West Ham after such illustrious success already under Guardiola.

The 23-year-old has made some rather remarkable strides this season, posting six goals and five assists from 13 matches so far and showing little sign of slowing down, and while the direct contributions have shot up, it is his overall performance that has been so eye-catching.

There is a very clear improvement to Alvarez's game after his first year in the Premier League, and this isn't just due to the regularity of his time on the pitch, but his awareness, intelligence and incisiveness have all skyrocketed.

This exponential growth stems from an acclimatisation to life on English shores, but also an unshackling from the constraints of Haaland's jaw-dropping prolificness.

Where last season, Manchester City's Norwegian goal machine was the star man, this term, Alvarez is no longer second fiddle and has his own discernible identity in Guardiola's intricate system.

The £100k-per-week gem will never boast the raw predatory instinct in front of goal, but he offers a multi-functional, protean ability in offensive situations and has evidenced this through his primary placement this season in his deeper-lying forward role this season.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

His manager has hailed him as "almost undroppable" – which is pretty high praise from a man known for his constant fluctuations and tinkering of his team.

The table above also illustrates his growing responsibility, having started all eight of City's Premier League matches this season, and given that he has already hit the halfway point in goal contributions from last season, he's clearly growing into a truly frightening forward.

Had he joined West Ham, there is no telling how his development would have been impacted, but one thing is for sure, his versatility and all-encompassing offensive attributes offer nothing less than the complete package.

With the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta all thriving under Moyes' wing – capable of prospering across an array of roles – Alvarez would surely have found his feet at the London Stadium.

And given that Antonio now approaches the twilight phase of his Hammers career, there is every possibility that Alvarez could have played the position he performs so admirably at the Etihad Stadium, offering an expansive set of skills to deftly complement the Jamaica international's own arsenal.

Sure, Alvarez has it all with Manchester City; last season, he won the treble and the World Cup with Argentina. There's really no arguing that the move he made was an auspicious one for his career.

But that doesn't mean the West Ham faithful can't dream of what might have been for a player who is destined for an unwavering placement at the very top of the global game.

Newcastle: £10m hero has been as prolific as Wilson since being sold

Newcastle have loved a cult forward or two over the years. Callum Wilson, now a seasoned scorer alongside the more exuberant Alexander Isak, is no exception to this trend. Still present at the ever-developing, ever-moneyed Newcastle – 31-year-old Wilson can look back on an impressive goal tally.

Wilson's scored more than you'd think. Perhaps it's a nod to the luxury of the league around him, as his 82 Premier League appearances for the Magpies with a prolific 42 goals somehow slipped under the radar. It's no wonder he's a fan favourite like he was at Bournemouth. However, this article isn't wholly about him.

In terms of cults on Tyneside, there's only really one man who epitomises the title. With a special onus on his 2011/12 season, as well as the fact he's still scoring at 38 – let's look at Papiss Cisse.

How good was Papiss Cissé at Newcastle?

For that one season in 2011/12, (and perhaps with the exception of 2014/15), Cisse was electric.

The Senegalese striker arrived in Newcastle after ripping up Ligue 2 with Metz and then the Bundesliga with Freiburg.

During the 2010/11 term, Cisse was second to Mario Gomez's 28 goals in the scoring charts with 22. An eventual total tally of 37 league goals is still a record for a Freiburg player, with that 22 itself being a season record for an African in the Bundesliga – surpassing Tony Yeboah's 20 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt back in 1992/93.

Newcastle's ears pricked up after this, as well as after a half-season where he scored nine in 17, and signed Cissé for £10m in January 2012. Here, the fun commenced.

In the second half of the sharp-shooting 11/12 campaign, fans saw one of the Premier League's most ridiculous runs of form as a leggy, frenetic Cisse bagged an insane 13 goals in 14 games with two amazing efforts coming against Chelsea. Stamford Bridge in May 2012. It's almost synonymous with Cisse.

The first goal sees Jonas Gutierrez find Davide Santon making a nice overlap. He jinks down the left channel before slipping the ball into Cisse. Don't look away. He's just on the edge of the box and in one movement, the ball's up and away. He's flicked it up and volleyed into the far right side with Cech no chance. He's made the skullcap-wearing maestro look like a playground kid. Up you get, Petr.

After seeing that first goal, it's easy to think 'it can't get better' – but obviously it always does.

Play is on the left-hand side and just out of the corner, big Shola Ameobi has chested it down. Again, I implore you, don't even blink – because on the bounce it's a pelter from with the outside of the right boot.

It's a dream of a strike and again, Cech may as well not even dive. Top right corner, disbelief. Look, even Drogba is clapping. Chelsea later ended the term sixth; a place behind Papiss-inspired Newcastle. This win not only helped to sway things. It stormed the goal of the month voting…

Where is Papiss Cissé now?

As hinted to briefly earlier, other than 2011/12's goal run, Cisse's next big season was in 2014/15 as he scored 11 goals in 22. Impressive, but he wasn't consistent enough – and feeling he'd had his time in the sun, he moved on in 2016 for around £5m.

Cue a goal-laden journey through China, three Turkish clubs and one near-death experience in a horrendous coach crash, before going back to Ligue 2 – the division where it all started.

In a beautifully Geordie-centric cyclic fashion too, at Amiens, he's up top with Andy Carroll who himself has gone off the beaten path.

Since leaving in 2016, Cissé has scored a whopping 80 goals and ten assists at club level compared to Wilson's 81 goals. That's not bad for a striker who is seven years Wilson's senior.

Erik ten Hag’s future as Man United manager revealed in sack update

Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure as Manchester United manager at the moment, and an update regarding his future has made the current situation clear.

How much pressure is Erik ten Hag under?

The Red Devils secured a solid third-place finish in the Premier League last season, with Ten Hag impressing in his first season in charge and receiving plenty of praise. The hope was that United would kick on a further gear in 2023/24, aided by more new signings such as Andre Onana and Mason Mount, and there was even talk of a potential title challenge from some quarters.

It has been woeful start to the season for the club, however, with four defeats coming their way in their opening seven league matches. In truth, it could be even worse than that, too, with Wolves hugely unlucky to lose at Old Trafford and Nottingham Forest also 2-0 up away from home at one point, prior to United winning 3-2.

Saturday afternoon's 1-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace has further cranked up the pressure on Ten Hag, and an update has now emerged over his future in Manchester.

Manchester United manager EriktenHagduring training

Will Erik ten Hag be sacked as Man Utd manager?

According to an update from Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, sharing news from his sources, the Dutchman's job as United boss is safe for the time being, although results and performances both clearly need to improve in order for that to stay the same:

"Man United are not yet considering sacking manager Erik ten Hag despite a poor start to the 2023-24 campaign, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed the Dutchman has plenty of credit in the bank after a successful first season at Old Trafford.

"Ten Hag led Man United to a third-place finish, won the League Cup – and also reached the FA Cup final, where they were beaten by Man City.

"A well-placed source has told Football Insider that there is “no panic” within top-ranking club chiefs despite a stuttering start this term. Nevertheless, pressure is ramping up on Ten Hag after four losses in the first seven Premier League games of the season."

There is no question that Ten Hag is under deserved pressure at the moment, with four defeats out of seven simply nowhere near good enough for a club of United's stature. They also lost their Champions League opener at Bayern Munich, and there is not much to be positive about at the moment.

In fairness to the manager, injury problems aren't helping him, with key defenders such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw all unavailable at the moment, but if there aren't noticeable improvements soon, a big decision may need to be made in the next few months.

For now, Ten Hag has enough credit in the bank after a good first season as manager – one that saw him handle the Cristiano Ronaldo situation expertly and also show strong character in dropping Harry Maguire – but United can't afford to be cut too far adrift in the Premier League top-four battle before serious questions start to be asked about whether another boss needs to come in and take the team forward.

Leeds have struck gold on a sensation who’s now a £25m star in the making

Leeds United’s late show against Sunderland on Monday night handed Daniel Farke’s side a huge step towards ending their stint in the Championship come the end of the season.

The victory over their promotion rivals moved them seven points clear of third place, with just 13 games to go, extending their unbeaten run in the league to 15 in the process.

Pascal Struijk’s two efforts off the bench demonstrated the importance of substitutes for the Whites this campaign, with every player, whether it be a starter or an impact player having a say in their ambitions of returning to the Premier League.

It’s safe to say the disappointment of last season’s play-off final defeat is firmly in the rearview mirror, potentially going one better in securing automatic promotion given the current buffer they’ve built in recent weeks.

However, the fact Farke has been able to do so after numerous key departures over the summer has made the German’s job at Elland Road all the more impressive.

Crysencio Summerville’s stats at Leeds in 2023/24

After relegation to the second tier in 2022/23, winger Crysencio Summerville was handed a crucial role in the first team to try and secure Leeds an immediate return to the top flight.

He’d previously been an impact player in the Premier League the season prior but cemented his place as a key performer for Farke in his debut campaign at the helm.

The Dutchman would register 20 goals and nine assists in his 46 league outings, producing countless moments of magic and subsequently claiming the Championship Player of the Year award.

However, after such a successful stint, coupled with the failure to claim promotion, Summerville would depart to join West Ham United last summer in a deal worth £25m.

Losing such a talented player was always going to be a blow for the supporters, but it appears that the club have done a superb job in landing a replacement for the youngster – aiding their chances of returning to the top flight this year.

The Leeds star who’s now a £25m star in the making

Players like Summerville don’t come around very often possessing a skill set that not many talents are capable of replicating – making any replacement have a huge task on their hands.

However, Manor Solomon arrived on loan from Tottenham over the summer, with supporters not knowing what to expect after his lack of impact in North London.

Regardless of the expectations placed on his shoulders, it’s safe to say the Israeli international has exceeded beyond anyone’s imagination, registering seven goals and seven assists in his 26 Championship games to date.

The 25-year-old has popped up at key moments for Farke, including the 2-0 win over Norwich City, in which he registered a goal and an assist, playing a vital role in the triumph against the manager’s former side.

Despite his lack of impact in previous seasons, he was labelled as a similar player to Summerville in 2022/23 by FBref, matching or bettering the Dutchman in numerous key areas.

Solomon, who’s previously been dubbed a “monster” by one analyst, matched the former Whites fan-favourite for goals, whilst also posting a higher shot-on-target rate – showcasing his clinical edge in attacking areas.

He also completed more take-ons per 90, subsequently achieving a higher success rate, evidently a better dribbler than Summerville – something which has aided his efforts in the final third this season.

Whilst he’s only on loan in Yorkshire this campaign, supporters will be hoping that, regardless of which division they will be playing in next year, Solomon joins the club on a permanent basis.

Should he do so, the Israeli could well be the club’s next big-money sale, following in the footsteps of Summerville – having a huge impact on the first-team, whilst also pocketing a pretty penny in the process.

'I was making horrible decisions' – Steven Smith reflects

‘It’s been tough but, you know, I think I needed a break if that makes sense. It’s obviously come under some ordinary circumstances but I was really mentally fatigued after the Ashes’

Daniel Brettig29-Jun-20183:28

Playing in Global T20 Canada part of my rehab – Smith

A renewed Steven Smith has reflected on how mental fatigue led him to making “horrible decisions” in the aftermath of last summer’s Ashes series, culminating in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal that saw him banned from the game for a year.On his return to competitive cricket in Global T20 Canada, Smith said he had been on a journey of many emotions since he was stripped of the Australian captaincy and banned for a year by Cricket Australia. After contributing a quickfire half century to the Toronto National’s successful chase in the opening match, Smith said that while he had been hurt by his inability to help Australian teammates on their losing tour of England, the Canadian sojourn formed part of his “rehab” from the brokenness he experienced in the wake of Cape Town.”I’ve been up and down with my emotions if I’m being honest,” Smith said in Toronto. “I’ve had times, particularly watching the boys play in England, and not play as well as they could have and England play extremely well, it was hurting me that I couldn’t go out and help them, help them win games.”And when they hopped on the plane to go over there I had some emotions that were a bit down. It’s been tough but, you know, I think I needed a break if that makes sense. It’s obviously come under some ordinary circumstances but I was really mentally fatigued after the Ashes. I put so much work into the Ashes, and I think back to the one-day games after the Ashes and I don’t think I’ve ever hit the ball that bad in my life.”I was making horrible decisions and I just felt horrible at the crease. I think it all comes down to the mental part of the game and I put so much into the Ashes that it took so much out of me. A bit of a break perhaps isn’t the worst thing. Hopefully I’ll be able to come back and perform at a really high level gain, but we’ll see what happens.”The first innings back showed signs of some rough edges, but by the end Smith was contributing fruitfully to his team’s victory while returning to the batting crease he described as a “haven”, away from all other distractions. “I normally don’t get real nervous before I play but I’ll be real honest, I was a bit nervous today,” he said.”You know, three months off and I haven’t hit that many balls back home, I’ve had a couple of nets but I haven’t had a hit on turf. A hit indoors yesterday and it felt pretty good and had a bit of luck today and I didn’t feel as good as I probably ever had, but it’s nice to score some runs when you’re not feeling good. Hopefully some positive signs.”Smith credited his manager Warren Craig, his fiancée Dani Willis, his father Peter and a close circle of friends for helping him through the past three months. “That’s made a big difference to me,” Smith said. “They know I absolutely love this game, and all I’ve ever wanted to be is a cricketer and I think they’d just be happy to see me back playing the game and it was fortunate to score some runs in my first game back, I didn’t feel as good as I would’ve liked, but it’s nice to score runs when you’re not feeling good.”I know all the people back home would be really proud of me playing here for the reasons I’m here as well. So it’s nice to be out in the middle. The last couple of months having some time off, I’ve been fortunate to do some really good work with Gotcha For Life and Gus Worland, talking about the mental health space and manning up and being vulnerable. Sometimes it’s okay to not be okay and things like that.”It’s been quite therapeutic for myself, but also I think a lot of the kids at the schools that I’ve gone to, I know we’ve made a big difference so far and that’s made me feel good in a way, and I’m going to do a lot more of that work when I get back home. I’ve been fortunate I’ve had the close people to me to get through what was a pretty difficult time in my life.”As for Smith’s plans between now and the end of his ban in March next year, he emphasised a desire to spend time at his home cricket club Sutherland in Sydney’s grade competition, and also looked forward to marrying Danni. “People have asked me if I’m going to play a lot of tournaments around the world while I’m suspended from international cricket and I’m going to play this one and go from there,” Smith said.”I know I’m going to go back and I want to try to make a difference at Sutherland, Shane Watson’s going to be playing there so it’ll be great to reunite with him. I’m getting married back home as well, so I do have a lot to look forward to, but we’ll see. If I’m playing in other tournaments there’s every chance it’ll be later on, probably next year.”I’m not going to lie, it’s been a difficult time in my life there’s no doubt about that. But I’ve accepted my punishment, accepted what I’ve gone through and I’m moving forward. Part of my rehab is playing cricket as well. That’s what I love doing and I want to help Toronto Nationals win this tournament, and most importantly have a good time. That’s what [Toronto captain] Darren Sammy’s been relaying to us, let’s go out and enjoy it and have fun and play some good solid cricket.”
