Thakur, Pandey fashion India's emphatic win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsManish Pandey and Dinesh Karthik calmly negotiated a tricky middle period to get India their second win in a truncated 19-overs a side Nidahas Trophy fixture in Colombo. They beat Sri Lanka by six wickets, with 10 balls to spare, and go atop of the points table with one game to play. The win was earlier fashioned by Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, who bowled tight spells on the face of a proper Sri Lanka counter-attack that could’ve so easily left India chasing close to 200. Sundar bowled four tight overs with his offspin and gave away just 21 runs, while Thakur finished with career-best T20I figures: 4 for 27 off four overs, during the course of which he showed tremendous variations, particularly the knuckleball. When the winning runs were hit, Pandey was unbeaten on 42 off 31 balls with three fours and a six with Karthik supporting him to make a sparkling 25-ball 39 not out. The pair added 68 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket, after India had slipped to 85 for four in the 10th over to help complete a challenging chase into a cruise.Suresh Raina injected momentum into India’s innings with two fierce sixes in his 15-ball 27 after Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma fell early. KL Rahul, playing his first game of the tournament, was then out hit wicket to leave India reeling. The pressure was on, but Pandey batted with a sense of nonchalance that rubbed off on Karthik. With the ball too, India fought back from a difficult position. They took three Sri Lanka wickets in the space of 13 balls after they had reached 113 for 3. The mini-collapse also coincided with a boundary draught that was broken after 30 deliveries when Dasun Shanaka edged Thakur to third-man for four. Shanaka struck the only six in the slog overs, before he, Akila Dananjaya and Suranga Lakmal fell in the last seven balls.Sri Lanka lost Danushka Gunathilaka to a fine catch by Suresh Raina at midwicket and Kusal Perera, undone by Sundar in the fourth over. The rampant Mendis then added 62 runs for the third wicket with a scratchy-looking Upul Tharanga. The pair ensured Sri Lanka finished the Powerplay overs.Mendis, who was audacious in his footwork and shot selection, often walking across to pull and whip, hit three fours in his 38-ball 55. Briefly, Perera and Shanaka threatened to take the game away from India, but were out looking to hit out. This stalled Sri Lanka’s momentum, thereby leaving them a good 20-25 runs short.

Newcastle injury news: "Immense" £85k-p/w Magpies star out for a month

Newcastle United have lost one of their first-team regulars to injury ahead of the trip to Milan, and a fresh report has revealed the exact number of games that he’s expected to miss.

Who is injured for Newcastle United?

Joe Willock, Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth are all currently sidelined with injuries, but Eddie Howe did receive a boost with a few of his stars having returned from the treament room over the weekend.

During Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Brentford, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali all staged their own individual comebacks which is helpful considering that the northeast outfit are set to compete in their first Champions League fixture vs AC Milan at the San Siro this week.

However, Joelinton won’t be able to participate under the bright lights of Europe's elite competition because of a recurring knee injury that he first sustained during last month’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, which saw him missing from the matchday squad for the recent win over Thomas Frank’s side.

The Magpies’ central midfielder was named as part of Brazil’s team during the international break alongside Bruno Guimaraes and he even featured as a substitute during both matches, but upon returning to the northeast, the 27-year-old has suffered a setback due to continually playing with his problem.

How long is Joelinton out for?

According to Newcastle World it goes from bad to worse, as Joelinton is expected to be on the sidelines for at least the “next six matches” after sustaining a knee injury during international duty for Brazil.

Speaking to the media, Howe previously said: “Joe had a recurrence of his knee injury playing for Brazil in the second game so he won’t be with us for a few weeks”, and the outlet claim that the earliest he’s expected to return to action is for the Premier League game vs Crystal Palace on October 21.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton.

How many goals does Joelinton have for Newcastle?

Following his arrival at Newcastle, Joelinton has posted 33 contributions (22 goals and 11 assists) in 161 appearances, form which has previously seen him described as “immense” by journalist Josh Bunting, so the fact that he’ll be missing for over a month will be a massive blow to Howe.

The ROGON client, who earns £85k-per-week, has also recorded 12 shot-creating actions so far this season which is the second-highest total throughout the squad, via FBRef, not to mention the different dimension that he adds to the centre with his height and physical presence, standing at 6 foot 1.

In addition, Alianca’s native is a versatile operator having been deployed in seven various positions since the start of his career, including three roles in the midfield and even everywhere across the frontline, though this is another attribute that the manager will have to cope without having at his disposal.

Joelinton was named the club's Player of the Year for the 2021/22 season so it’s clear to see how much he’s appreciated by his fellow teammates, the staff and supporters, therefore, everyone associated with the club will be hoping for his return to action as soon as possible.

Everton: Dyche must unleash his £52k-p/w "nightmare"

Everton return to Premier League action today to take on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Sean Dyche's side still searching for their first league victory of the season.

With just one point to show for their travails thus far, the Toffees have been blessed with a fortuitous run of fixtures before the next international break – after the clash against the Bees, Goodison Park awaits Luton Town and Bournemouth, before a daunting Merseyside derby clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

What's the latest Everton team news?

Everton will wield the same tools that were utilised against Arsenal last Sunday, with the Blues losing that one 1-0.

Jack Harrison might be included in the match-day squad as he nears full fitness after a lengthy injury – having yet to feature since signing on loan from Leeds United in the summer.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dwight McNeil's respective injury issues have been overcome, and both will be pushing to start in London; McNeil did receive a starting berth last week but Dyche acknowledged that might've been premature.

Seamus Coleman, Dele Alli and Andre Gomes all remain long-term absentees.

How is Arnaut Danjuma performing?

One player who could play a big role in Everton's forthcoming clash is Arnaut Danjuma, who has been lively since joining on a season-long loan from Spanish side Villarreal in the summer.

The dynamic Dutchman had previously spent a short stint with Tottenham Hotspur last season after rejecting the Toffees in January, but only mustered a peripheral role and scored just twice from 12 outings across all competitions.

Now looking like an exciting attacking outlet for an Everton side struggling for offensive potency, Danjuma has already matched his goal tally with the Lilywhites in half as many matches.

Arnaut Danjuma

As per Sofascore, the six-cap international has earned an average match score of 6.80 in the English top-flight thus far, playing five matches and starting three.

Averaging 3.2 shots per game, completing 80% of his passes, succeeding with 75% of his dribbles and winning 56% of his ground duels, the 26-year-old holds the bag of skills to prove to be a "nightmare for defenders" – as has been said by pundit Kevin Phillips.

Should Arnaut Danjuma start against Brentford?

A versatile forward, Danjuma can play across the frontline and offers a threat whether Dyche should choose to deploy him.

But against Brentford, the £52k-per-week phenom must find a home down the right channel, exploiting the absence of the stricken Rico Henry, who ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) against Newcastle United and is now expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

Condolences to the afflicted, but Henry's injury presents a fine opportunity for an electric ace of Danjuma's ilk to wreak havoc, with the one-time Bournemouth star ranking among the top 7% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Brentford'sRicoHenryin action with Manchester City's Kyle Walker

Given that Henry has been in fine fettle for some time it is a blow to be without him, having been hailed by manager Thomas Frank for his defensive prowess, who said to the BBC: "On the defensive side, one-on-one actions, I actually haven’t seen a player or winger in the last two years in the Premier League that got the better of him."

Indeed, the 26-year-old had made 1.4 tackles and 4.8 ball recoveries in the league this season, completing 85% of his passes and winning 63% of his ground duels – crucial to Brentford's success over the past few years.

Danjuma can unleash his might against Brentford, and while Henry's lengthy absence is a poignant thing, it does open up a window of opportunity for Dyche to mastermind a victory to belatedly get Everton's season up and running.

Leeds: Farke Could Sign £35k-p/w "Demon" To Partner Glen Kamara In Late Deal

Leeds United must act quickly if they are to bolster suitably before deadline day comes to a close, with a number of top options that remain up for grabs…

Who will Leeds United sign?

With a fine summer of spending already under Daniel Farke’s belt, admittedly most of those acquisitions have come to offset the mass exodus suffered at Elland Road.

The German has overseen numerous first-team exits, with many of the stars who hid during their relegation quick to jump ship after dropping into the Championship.

Now, the calibre of transfer targets has shifted dramatically from who they could have been aiming for had they stayed up, with proven talent at their new level at the forefront of their shortlist.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

It therefore makes sense that Football Insider notes their interest in Newcastle United midfield Jeff Hendrick, suggesting that they are in a race to snag him ahead of various other clubs at their level.

The Republic of Ireland international is wildly out of favour at St James' Park following their speedy evolution, and his exit could come at an ample time given he has just one year left on his £35k-per-week deal.

How good is Glen Kamara?

Such an acquisition could coincide perfectly with their reported interest in another midfield general, Glen Kamara.

The Finland international has enjoyed a fine four-year spell at Rangers but is seemingly seeking a new challenge as he closes in on completing his move to Elland Road.

Farke is clearly seeking to add a wealth of experience to his engine room, and should he secure both of these stars, he would have the pleasure of fielding a midfield full of senior internationals ready to tackle this division.

Whilst Hendrick has seen his play time limited on Tyneside, his two recent loan spells with QPR and Reading have allowed him to recapture his form of old within the Championship, as the 31-year-old winds down on an impressive career.

In fact, the manager of the latter club Paul Ince was full of praise for the ageing stalwart, highlighting his elite mentality and consistency:

"He gives you six, seven or eight out of ten. He is not a glamorous player by any means but you get what it says on the tin and if you add goals to his game then you’ve got a very good player. I was pleased for him. He’ll be disappointed because scoring twice should be enough to win at home.

"But he is a great lad and the others love him. He trains like a demon every day. He is very professional and I like professional players and he is one you can trust."

jeff-hendrick

He does not star in one particular field, but placing him beside Kamara could offer him the freedom to add to his five goal contributions from last term for a side that fell to the drop.

After all, the 27-year-old Gers star has been a calming presence throughout his time at Ibrox, arguably reaching his peak during the 2021/22 season.

Maintaining a 7.01 average rating in the Scottish Premiership that year, such a figure was buoyed by his 91% pass accuracy and six goal contributions alongside one tackle per game, via Sofascore – economical yet unafraid to push forward, he could learn so much from the man they could bring in beside him.

His quality would be unparalleled for this level, and alongside the experience Hendrick offers, they would strike up a fine partnership.

After all, you cannot get by with 251 Championship appearances and a further 147 Premier League showings, without boasting some quality, which Kamara would surely help flourish in the Elland Road engine room.

'Now is my best time to contribute to the team' – Mushfiqur

The batsman also hopes that the BCB president now realises that he can play in an aggressive manner

Mohammad Isam12-Mar-2018Mushfiqur Rahim is as serious as they come, always focused on his cricket, so when he does something that is even remotely funny, it catches the interest of the Bangladesh public. That was the case when he pulled off the “cobra celebration” after sealing a record chase for Bangladesh with an unbeaten 72 off 35 balls in the Nidahas Trophy. After flicking a low full toss through midwicket to wrap up victory, Mushfiqur waved his bat in the air and did the snake dance, a celebration made popular by his team-mate Nazmul Islam. Was it a sign that his usually intense on-field demeanor is changing? Apparently not.”It was just a normal celebration,” Mushfiqur said. “Maybe everyone liked it. I don’t want to say much about it. [The celebration] wasn’t pre-planned. I think you can see in the celebration that we wanted the win badly.Deadpan response number two came when Mushfiqur was asked to turn his attention to the BCB president’s comments about his batting. On Sunday, Nazmul Hasan said he was shocked to see the batsman hitting massive sixes.”I think after this innings he [BCB president] will know that I can at least play that way,” Mushfiqur said. “I think he saw my game in a different way all this time. I think there’s a different feeling when all your hard work over months pays off in the middle. I don’t think he saw us in training, too, but we did the job in the middle.”I am not surprised [with my innings]. If you don’t have self-belief it becomes hard to deliver. To be honest, it is not good for me to be overjoyed after such an innings especially on that very good batting wicket. Someone had to play such a knock.”People often focus on the result; they don’t look at the hard work we put into training. We had a tough time off late but we believed in ourselves. But it is also true that when you get the result, it boosts the team.”Mushfiqur said he was keen to cash in on his experience – he is Bangladesh’s most capped T20I player – and contribute to the team with the bat.”I try very hard to give back to the Bangladesh team and cricket what experience I have earned playing for almost 13 years,” he said. “I think now is my best time to contribute to the team. I will try to be consistent as a top-order batsman.”I probably didn’t start T20s that well but now I want to correct my record in this format. I have a lot of other better innings in ODIs and Tests and I feel that I have the ability to play much better knocks in T20s.”Mushfiqur credited stand-in captain Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal for Bangladesh’s remarkable turnaround after the ODI and T20I series losses to Sri Lanka at home.”We had a brilliant chat as a whole group before the tournament,” he said. “We talked about regrouping, and that we have to do it; nobody will do it for us. We spoke about a lot of things that inspired us a lot, which is why I want to thank Tamim and Riyad [Mahmudullah] .

Arsenal: Latest Leandro Trossard injury update

Arsenal have now been provided with an update on Leandro Trossard's hamstring injury, which caused him to miss Sunday's North London derby.

Which Arsenal players are injured?

There are a number of first-team players sidelined at the moment, as reported by ESPN, with Thomas Partey out due to a groin injury, but he is hopeful of being fit for the Manchester City clash on October 7th, although there is no guarantee he will be. Gabriel Martinelli has also been out of action, as a result of a hamstring injury, but there are indications the winger may not be missing for much longer, as ESPN detail he is now likely to return within the next fortnight.

Martinelli is not the only Gunners winger who's had an injury scare, with Bukayo Saka seen limping towards the end of Sunday's game against Spurs, but he is thought to have taken a kick to the foot, so he is unlikely to be ruled out for too long. There is good news all round for Arsenal on the injury front, as they are confident of avoiding an immediate injury crisis, following positive initial tests on Declan Rice and Trossard in recent days.

Rice was withdrawn at half-time in Sunday's derby clash, with Mikel Arteta stating the Englishman was suffering with "discomfort in his back", but while he is still troubled by the problem, it is not understood to be considered a serious issue at this point.

As for Trossard, the Belgian was ruled out of the North London derby entirely due to a hamstring injury, but hs is expected to resume training later this week, and he could even make his first-team return in the next Premier League match.

Although the 28-year-old is likely to sit out Wednesday's EFL Cup clash against Brenford at the Gtech Community Stadium, alongside Rice, there is an outside chance he returns for Saturday's trip to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. It is currently unclear when Rice is set to return, but ESPN detail that any absence will be "short."

When did Leandro Trossard last play?

The left-winger last featured in the 1-0 victory against Everton earlier this month, during which he scored the only goal of the game, his first of the season, to secure all three points for Arsenal at Goodison Park.

The Belgium international's injury came at a bad time, fresh off the back of scoring the winning goal, having only featured sporadically prior to that match, so it is good news that he could be back in contention for the next Premier League game.

In his three Premier League outings this season, the "magic man", as lauded by journalist Richie Mills, has featured at both left-winger and striker, showcasing his versatility, and he is likely to be needed on the left-wing at the weekend.

With Martinelli still set to be sidelined for a couple more weeks, the Bournemouth match could be the perfect opportunity for Trossard to cement his place in the starting XI, should he return to full fitness ahead of schedule.

Philander six-for completes historic series win for South Africa

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:58

Holding: Series win will be a big push for SA’s next generation

It’s always challenging for a captain to judge when his team has enough runs on the board. Turns out South Africa had enough about an hour into day two. Led by a brilliant bowling display from Vernon Philander, South Africa took less than 90 minutes on the final day in Johannesburg to wrap up victory by 492 runs, sealing their first home series win against Australia since 1970.A series full of bad blood and boorish behaviour, collateral damage and carnage ended with the latter. Australia started the day on 88 for 3 and lost their remaining seven wickets for 31 runs inside 17 overs. Philander struck with the first ball of the day, again three deliveries later, and kept striking even more regularly and resoundingly than Big Ben. He finished with the remarkable figures of 6 for 21, and match figures of 9 for 51, and Australia were humbled for 119.The win was sealed with the retiring Morne Morkel at the bowling crease, although the wicket was not added to his career tally of 309. Nathan Lyon drove Morkel away through cover and turned for a risky second run; Aiden Markram’s throw from the outfield was good enough for Quinton de Kock to whip the bails off and have Lyon run out for 9. Australia had made only 340 runs for the match; South Africa had that many well before lunch on day two.It is hard to believe Australia won the first Test of this series. It seems an era ago, and in many ways it was. Since then, Australia’s captain and vice-captain have been sacked in disgrace, the coach has resigned, and Tim Paine, not even part of Tasmania’s team at the start of the summer, is now the skipper. In terms of results, Australia’s 1-0 series lead turned into a 3-1 win for South Africa, who dominated throughout the remainder of the series. Not only was this Australia’s first series defeat in South Africa since 1970, it was also the first time since that same tour that they had gone through a series of at least four Tests without a single batsman scoring a century. Australia’s collective batting average of 22.02 was their lowest in a series of at least four Tests since the dark days of the World Series Cricket era, when an enormously weakened side averaged 19.17 in the Ashes in England. The final-day carnage began with Philander nipping one in to Shaun Marsh, whose inside edge ricocheted off his leg and was taken in the cordon by Temba Bavuma. Three balls later, Philander added Mitchell Marsh, whose regulation edge was caught behind. Peter Handscomb soon fell to Philander in almost identical fashion to his first-innings dismissal, trying to leave but instead playing on to his stumps, this time for 24.That was all just a warm-up for Philander, who later managed three wickets in four balls. His fine display of swing and seam bowling brought three consecutive edges from Paine – an inside edge, then an outside edge that didn’t carry to gully, and then a regulation chance to the wicketkeeper. Two balls later, Pat Cummins failed to pick the inswinger and was bowled shouldering arms to Philander, and next delivery Chadd Sayers edged to third slip.Philander’s hat-trick ball was solidly defended by Josh Hazlewood, and the match then entered a holding pattern as Lyon and Hazlewood held off the inevitable for six overs. The only question was who would get the final wicket – Philander, to complete a ten-wicket match haul, Morkel to finish his last Test on a high, or someone else. In the end, it was a run-out, perhaps appropriately effected by Markram, who with 480 was comfortably the leading run-scorer in the series. The final scenes of this vituperative series involved joy and disappointment, but also handshakes and congratulations, the way Test cricket should be. And, also as it should be, the best team won.

India say no to day-night Adelaide Test

Adelaide’s annual Test match will be an all-day affair for the first time since 2014 after Cricket Australia conceded that the BCCI would not accept a pink-ball fixture

Daniel Brettig08-May-2018Adelaide’s annual Test match will be an all-day affair for the first time since 2014 after Cricket Australia (CA) conceded that the BCCI would not accept a pink-ball fixture.CA’s chief executive James Sutherland had held out hope of a day-night match until as recently as last week’s announcement of the schedule for 2017-18, but his arguments failed to convince the BCCI.BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhury wrote to Sutherland on Monday, saying the Committee of Administrators, the supervising authority of the Indian board, had decided that India would only be ready to play pink-ball Test cricket sometime next year. “I am directed to say by the Committee of Administrators that India would begin to play in the format only in about a year’s time,” Choudhury wrote in an e-mail, accessed by PTI. “Under the circumstances, I regret to say that the proposed day-night Test cannot be played and all Tests will have to have the conventional structure.””We can confirm that we have received advice from the BCCI that it is not prepared to participate in a proposed day-night Test in Adelaide this summer,” a CA spokesperson said. “As a result, we can now confirm this Test match will be a day format… We are committed to hosting at least one day-night Test each home summer as part of our continued focus to grow Test cricket, and we are excited about the day-night Test against Sri Lanka at the Gabba in January.”Australia have been pioneers of the format, and have won all four of the day-night Tests they have played at home. Sutherland had previously contended that India’s reticence was based on issues of competitive advantage. This view perhaps reflects the BCCI’s statement that India is not yet ready for pink-ball Test cricket.”There’s always a bit of trepidation and conservatism in India and, to be frank, I think they want to come out here and beat us,” Sutherland told SEN Radio. “There’s a sense that perhaps Australia has won each of the pink-ball Test matches played in Australia, it gives us a bit of an advantage.”I think personally the home country should have the right to schedule matches as it sees fit and start them at whatever time of day they want. The Adelaide Test match in the day-night format has been a huge success – it’s been a great story in terms of attendances and atmosphere but also television audiences.”It’s the way of the future and India may or may not come around to that idea for this tour but I still believe it’s the way of the future. I think everyone in world cricket knows that.”The decision is a blow for CA’s new broadcast partners Fox Sports and Seven, with the Adelaide Test under lights drawing the strongest television audiences of the past three summers. Sutherland has expressed hope that once the ICC Test Championship begins in 2019 there will be regulations in place to allow the home board to decide on a series format.”This summer is the last season of Test tours as we know it,” he said. “We move to the Test Championship in July 2019, where the Ashes will be the first series of the new Test Championship. We are hoping there will be some sort of regulation that will allow home teams to fixture at least one day-night Test match.”

Injury news: Leeds could now be handed triple boost before Millwall – YEP

Leeds United could welcome back three players from injury for this weekend’s trip to Millwall, according to The Yorkshire Evening Post.

What’s the latest Leeds injury news?

The Whites and Daniel Farke have had a number of injury issues already this season.

Stuart Dallas has remained sidelined as has Junior Firpo, with the pair yet to feature at all under the new Leeds manager. Forwards Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph were injured in pre-season and haven’t featured since, whereas captain Liam Cooper sustained a foot problem on the opening weekend after scoring against Cardiff City.

New signing Sam Byram had an adductor issue in the club’s only Championship win against Ipswich Town and wingers Dan James and Ian Poveda have also been injured in recent weeks.

However, it looks as if Farke and Leeds are set for a much-needed boost heading to The Den on Sunday lunchtime as domestic action returns.

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue, James has a chance of featuring against Millwall following an adductor injury.

“Wales international James has a chance of making this weekend's matchday squad against Millwall after picking up an adductor strain last month. Wales boss Rob Page described the issue as a 'three-week injury' prior to September's international break, therefore his comeback is imminent.”

The next was Joseph, who ‘will be considered’ this weekend after spraining his ankle.

“England youth international Mateo Joseph is highly-rated by Whites boss Farke but missed the first month of the new campaign with an ankle sprain. He's back in training now, though, and will be considered for Sunday's game against Millwall.”

Finally, Poveda also appears to be on course for potential selection from the bench this weekend.

“Another who could be back for this weekend's fixture is Ian Poveda, who made a splash during pre-season, featuring unexpectedly under Farke after two seasons out on loan. The winger's return from injury supplements Leeds' wide options, most likely as an impact sub.”

Dan James

Leeds’ next five fixtures…

The Whites have struggled to get that winning feeling back at Elland Road after relegation from the Premier League last season, winning just one of their opening five second-tier fixtures.

Three home draws and one away defeat alongside the win at Portman Road leaves Farke’s side with work to do over the coming weeks to climb the table.

First up is a trip to Millwall on Sunday, which is followed by another away game against Hull City on Wednesday evening. A return to Elland Road against Watford follows on Saturday 23 September, with Leeds ending September with a trip to Southampton on Saturday 30 September.

October begins with a home clash against Queens Park Rangers, and by then, Leeds and Farke will be hoping to be higher than their current 15th-place position.

The hope will be that more players can return from injury over the coming weeks alongside James, Joseph and Poveda, and having a fully fit squad for large parts of the campaign will only help the club’s chances of returning to the top flight at the first time of asking.
