New Zealand have brought in Ross Taylor and Wellington wicketkeeper Tom Blundell in place of Colin Munro and Glenn Phillips, respectively, for the deciding T20 against Pakistan on Sunday. While Munro was unavailable with a mild hamstring strain in his right leg, Phillips was released from the squad to feature in the domestic 50-over tournament, the Ford Trophy.Selector Gavin Larsen said the long-term prognosis for Munro’s injury wasn’t bad, but they wanted to make sure he got rest ahead of a busy schedule.”Colin picked up a minor injury during the match at Eden Park and, with a busy schedule coming up, we want to make sure he gets it right before getting back on the field,” Larsen said. “We’ll assess Colin ahead of Monday when we announce the squad to go to Australia and, at this stage, we are optimistic he’ll be available.”It’s a luxury to be able to bring someone of Ross’s experience into the squad as his replacement.”Munro has been in terrific form but Phillips had scores of 3 and 5 in the first two T20s against Pakistan, and had collected a total of 73 runs in the three T20Is against West Indies recently. Coach Mike Hesson said they wanted Phillips to “evolve” his game in the domestic circuit.”After discussion with Glenn, we felt he’d benefit from going back and continuing to evolve his game with Auckland,” Hesson said. “Glenn has a big future, but at this point in time we both think continuing to get experience on the domestic scene is the right move.”Tom’s ability to slot into the middle-order made him the right choice to come into the squad. Looking beyond Sunday’s game, we have a top three who are very set, so it’s important Tom can come into that middle-order and do a role for us.”The ongoing T20 series is level 1-1 after New Zealand blanked Pakistan 5-0 in the ODIs and won the first T20 too. Pakistan fought back with a convincing 48-run win in the second T20 in Auckland. The final T20 will be played in Mount Maunganui on January 28.

Leeds team news: Rarely-seen £6m-rated "leader" must start v Salford

Leeds United are back in action again tonight, with fans likely raring to witness another clash after claiming their first Championship win of the season on Saturday.

Who could start for Leeds United tonight?

However, the competition shifts for today's Tuesday night match, as the Whites travel to Salford City in the hopes that they can enjoy a deep run in this year’s iteration of the EFL Cup.

As understandably heavy favourites for the clash, given they face off against a League Two side, much of the pressure will rest on Daniel Farke’s team to take the game to the hosts and dictate the play.

However, it will remain a huge banana skin, especially given the German will likely want to rotate his side given the gruelling schedule they face following their relegation.

As such, it is expected that some of the star youngsters could be given a run in the side, with towering defender Charlie Cresswell surely meriting a place in the side and an opportunity to stake his first-team claim.

How good is Charlie Cresswell?

Having spent the last year on loan with Millwall, the 21-year-old is actually more well-versed than most of the current squad when it comes to Championship football.

As such, he featured 30 times for Gary Rowett’s side, maintaining a 7.13 average rating throughout a gruelling campaign that nearly culminated in a playoff finish.

This stellar figure was upheld by his six goal contributions, alongside 1.3 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and 3.1 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

Such fine form was always foreseen though, with there being no bigger believer in his bright future than himself.

He was particularly reflective back in 2021, noting just after signing a new contract: “I’ve been at the club since I was 11 and so to sign a new deal here is just fantastic.

"I'm confident, I'm a leader, I like to play and I like to head it! “There's lots of players in the first team that I look up to, the likes of Coops, Bill, they lead by example and that is what I want to try and follow.

“My targets for the next few years are obviously to try and get in the first team eventually, but in this moment I have got to go in day to day and just push every day to the best of my ability and hopefully that takes me somewhere.”

It seems like he is set to get his chance to achieve the latter goal, but nerves will likely play a big part given this will be just his third start of the term.

Having been out on loan all last year, Cresswell has actually only made two starts in 23 months, with his last coming back in September 2021.

Not only this, but their ropey start to the league season defensively could offer an opportunity should he shine tonight, as they have conceded seven goals in just four games.

Everton could have signed £25m Demarai Gray upgrade

Everton’s summer business was largely quite astute given their financial woes, but there remains one failed target that Sean Dyche could live to rue given recent developments regarding Demarai Gray.

Why is Demarai Gray leaving Everton?

Gray’s proposed move to Saudi Arabia has been well-documented, with journalist Alan Myers having noted of interest even back in mid-July.

So, when Deadline Day came and went without the Toffees bringing in any wide reinforcements, it seemed like the Jamaica international was poised to be reintegrated back into the squad after days of training alone.

The winger had other ideas. A questionable Instagram story gave his feelings on the stuttering Saudi switch, as he seemingly aimed a dig at Dyche.

The former Burnley boss then responded with his views on the matter, in an interview with the club: “Demarai made it clear that he felt he was getting a move and he told us a move was done, which was interesting to hear from a player.

“We reminded him of the truth of the fact that no moves are done without this club’s say so. That’s the truth of it.”

Despite that, it now seems like Gray will get his wish and finally depart Goodison Park, leaving them incredibly light on the wings and no transfer window to hand them some respite.

If only they had succeeded in their continued pursuit of Wilfried Gnonto.

Did Everton nearly sign Wilfried Gnonto?

In an effort to clearly replace the former Leicester City wantaway, Dyche put all his eggs in Gnonto’s basket.

The Merseyside outfit saw three bids rejected, the highest of which reached £25m (via Sky Sports live transfer blog), and despite the 19-year-old even handing in a transfer request, it was a failed venture in the end. He remained in Yorkshire, with Leeds United coming out on top.

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto.

His presence would have made for a sensational piece of business now, given Gray’s imminent exit, as not only would he offer the club some much-needed depth, but it could even be argued that the Italy international marked an upgrade on the 27-year-old.

After all, both battled well for relegation-threatened sides, and offered key goal contributions that helped in their pursuit of safety.

With two goals and four assists in the Premier League, Gnonto capped off a fine first year in England by capturing the attention of many. Journalist Phil Hay sought to outline him for praise: “Massive hit on Gnonto who is just electric every time he gets the ball.”

Meanwhile, not only was Gray’s tally of four goals and one assist lower, it must also be noted that two of his strikes came from the penalty spot; also, given his age, he is unlikely to improve at the rate that the Whites’ trickster likely will do.

After all, in his 75 appearances for Everton, he has managed just 18 goal contributions since joining for just £1.7m in 2021.

Despite all that, Dyche is set to be without either, still searching for that first Premier League win of the season. The hope will be that they can get to January still afloat in time to either return to this transfer saga or look elsewhere in the market to secure safety once again.

Celtic: £1.6m signing saw his value soar by 338% under Rodgers

Celtic have been unable to unearth a number of stars in recent years as they have plucked out talented young prospects for modest fees before selling them for a significant profit.

Who are Celtic's most expensive sales?

The Hoops have raked in millions from player sales having proven to be an excellent landing spot for promising talents to come and showcase their ability as part of a dominant side in Scotland.

The club's five-most expensive sales in their history highlight their ability to develop signings as only one of the five – Kieran Tierney – came through the academy system at Parkhead.

Another player whom the club, and manager at the time Ronny Deila, played a blinder with was Scottish central midfielder Stuart Armstrong, whose value soared during his time with the Hoops.

Deila, who won two Scottish Premiership titles and one League Cup in Scotland, snapped up the talented gem from Dundee United and it turned out to be an outstanding piece of business by the Norwegian tactician.

How much did Celtic pay for Stuart Armstrong?

The Hoops reportedly splashed out a fee of £1.6m to sign the technically-gifted ace from the fellow Scottish side during the January transfer window in 2015.

They had two bids rejected by Dundee United earlier that window and faced competition from Premier League team Burnley but were ultimately able to secure his services for the aforementioned figure, which was said to be too expensive for the Clarets as they backed away from a possible deal.

Celtic signed the 22-year-old after he had proven himself to be a reliable attacking outlet at Premiership level with United.

Former Dundee United midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

Armstrong racked up 21 goals and 31 assists in 150 appearances for his former club and provided a regular threat at the top end of the pitch during his final two league campaigns.

The versatile gem, who was deployed out wide or in the middle of the park, produced eight goals and seven assists in 36 Premiership matches throughout the 2013/14 season. He also managed an outstanding three goals and three assists in five SFA Cup clashes that term.

Celtic's attention was then caught by his performances during the first half of the following campaign as the central midfielder scored six goals and assisted six in 20 league matches for United, which was an average of one goal contribution every 1.67 matches – better than his average of one every 2.4 outings in 2013/14.

This convinced the Hoops to splash out £1.6m to secure his signature and it turned out to be a fantastic decision as Armstrong enjoyed a brilliant spell with the Scottish giants.

How many goals did Armstrong score for Celtic?

The Scotland international, who has been capped 43 times by his country to date, went on to score 28 goals in 144 appearances for the Bhoys during his three-and-a-half-year stint at the club.

Armstrong, however, did not enjoy the best of starts to his career with Celtic as he managed just one goal and four assists in 15 Premiership matches over the second half of the 2014/15 campaign.

The attack-minded midfield wizard got his feet under the table ahead of the 2015/16 season and went on to produce four goals and seven assists in 25 league outings for the Scottish giants.

Former Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

His best form in a Hoops shirt came during the following campaign as Brendan Rodgers arrived at the helm in 2016 and got the former Dundee United star firing.

Armstrong ended the 2016/17 term with an outstanding 15 goals and seven assists in 31 league matches for the club, which worked out as an average of one goal involvement every 1.41 outings.

In 2017, Rodgers lavished praise on the central midfielder and described him as a "powerful" player who has "everything" to his game. The Northern Irish tactician said that he was impressed by Armstrong's raw materials and went as far as to say that he was a "joy" to work with in Glasgow.

He did not hit quite the same levels the following year, as Armstrong scored three goals and provided five assists in 27 Premiership games, but that did not stop Premier League side Southampton from making a move for him.

How much did Celtic sell Armstrong for?

The Hoops eventually cashed in on Scotland international during the summer transfer window in 2018 as the Saints snapped him up for a reported fee of £7m.

Sky Sports claimed that talks over an improved contract at Parkhead had stalled with the goalscoring midfielder and that opened the door for the English club to secure his services.

The £7m fee that they received for him did, however, mean that the player's market value soared by a whopping 338% from the initial £1.6m they paid Dundee United for him during his time in Glasgow.

This shows that Deila struck gold for Celtic with his deal back in 2015 as Armstrong went on to become an excellent performer under Rodgers and earned the club a big payday just over three years later.

Where is Armstrong now?

The 31-year-old is still with Southampton and is currently playing Championship football at St. Mary's after he made 149 Premier League appearances for the club.

Armstrong produced 16 goals and 12 assists at the top level of English football and has played 175 games for the Saints in total since his move in 2018.

Football Transfers now rates his current Expected Transfer Value at €4.8m (£4.1m) with his market price having plummeted towards the twilight of his playing career.

Overall, Deila's decision to sign Armstrong from Dundee United was a shrewd one that resulted in Celtic enjoying his talents on the pitch for a number of years before raking in a big fee for his services before his value started to drop.

It also showed that there is value to be had in picking up young Scottish players from fellow Premiership teams and that the club does not always need to look abroad to find up and coming talents.

Ronchi's 77 off 41 consigns Lahore to sixth straight loss

The result meant a brisk half-century from Anton Devcich and a late blitz from Brendon McCullum came to nought, and Lahore remained winless this season

The Report by Arun Venugopal08-Mar-2018Luke Ronchi’s stunning assault at the top of the order backed up Islamabad United’s disciplined bowling performance and condemned Lahore Qalandars to a six-wicket defeat, their sixth loss in as many games. Ronchi’s 41-ball 77 meant Islamabad chased down a target of 164 with 2.2 overs to spare. This was Islamabad’s second victory over a hapless Lahore side this season, the first one having come in a Super-Over finish.Ronchi and JP Duminy set the tone for the chase with a 47-run opening stand in 4.3 overs. Sunil Narine received a rude welcome as Ronchi smashed his first delivery for a six, but he hit back two balls later by having Duminy caught at slip. Narine would go on to take two more wickets, including Ronchi’s, but it was the latter who had the last laugh. During the course of his innings, which included five fours and six sixes, Ronchi brought out his complete repertoire – the swivel-pull, cut, drive and even the flat-batted smash. When he tonked Aamer Yamin over long-off in the ninth over, he brought up his half-century off 22 balls, the joint-fastest in the PSL. When Ronchi perished in the 16th over, Islamabad needed only 13 to win.In contrast to their performance for the most part of the match, Lahore had started in rousing fashion with the bat, with Fakhar Zaman and Anton Devcich (62 off 42 balls) raising an opening stand of 56 in 6.4 overs. Zaman led the way in the early exchanges as he biffed, pulled and cut his way to 34 off 24 balls. He was smartly caught behind by Ronchi off Duminy’s bowling, but Devcich sustained the momentum. Playing his first game of the tournament, Devcich, much like Fakhar, revelled in leg-side strokes. Often, he cleared his leg and swatted the ball between long-on and deep midwicket. While overs six to nine brought 37 runs to Lahore, there was a lull in the scoring after Agha Salman was dismissed in the 12th over. With Denesh Ramdin, promoted to No.4, struggling to middle the ball, Devcich found himself under more pressure but couldn’t accelerate the tempo. Eventually both the batsmen perished in the 17th over bowled by Faheem Ashraf. Captain Brendon McCullum made a furious late dash with an unbeaten 12-ball 33, but that would eventually prove inadequate. Ashraf picked up three wickets for Islamabad, while legspinner Shadab Khan finished with figures of 4-0-15-1.Where the match was won
Before this match, Ramdin hadn’t scored a single boundary in the PSL this season. It wouldn’t change by the time his painful crawl to 9 off 20 balls came to an end. What then remained baffling was McCullum’s ploy to promote Ramdin ahead of himself at No. 4. Ramdin came in with the score on 101 in 11.2 overs, and departed with the addition of 20 runs in five overs. His inability to time the ball had an adverse effect on Devcich as well during a period where Lahore went eight overs without a boundary. They managed only 69 runs in the last 10 overs, and in retrospect Lahore’s cause would have been better served had McCullum faced more than the dozen balls he did.The men that won it
As much as Ramdin’s knock contributed to Lahore’s slowdown, Shadab’s role in sapping the life out of the innings can’t be overstated. Introduced into the attack at the halfway mark, the 19-year-old legspinner gave away seven runs in his first over. He then went on to concede only eight more runs in his next three. Ramdin had a particularly hard time as he swished and groped at the ball without being able to connect his bat. Shadab’s parsimony effectively halted Islamabad’s march to a total in the range of 180.Where they stand
Islamabad jumped from fifth to second with their fourth win. Lahore, meanwhile, continued to languish at the bottom of the table, and while they aren’t mathematically out of reckoning for a spot in the playoffs, they have their task cut out.

Cooper's ton fires South Australia to first-innings lead

New South Wales 256 and 1 for 61 (Hughes 32*, Cowan 16*, Winter 1-26) lead South Australia 281 (Cooper 105*, Andrews 50, Copeland 4-63) by 36 runs
ScorecardAn unbeaten century from South Australia veteran Tom Cooper helped the Redbacks claim first-innings lead over New South Wales in a tight tussle at the SCG.The Redbacks were 7 for 141 at one stage and were looking at a significant first-innings deficit. Trent Copeland had taken four of the first seven scalps for the home side. But Cooper and Tom Andrews combined for a 96-run stand to dig the Redbacks out of the mire. Andrews made his maiden first-class half-century before falling to the legspin of Daniel Fallins.Cooper looked set to be stranded but sneaked to his 10th first-class hundred when the Redbacks were nine down. Oman trounce Nepal after Kaleemullah's four-for, Canada thwart UAE to go to 2-0

Tall medium-pacer Kaleemullah set up a six-wicket win for Oman over Nepal and Canada’s Nitish Kumar prevailed in a showdown of offspinning-allrounder captains against UAE

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Windhoek09-Feb-2018
Peter Della PennaTall medium-pacer Kaleemullah used his height and bounce to claim 4 for 28, setting up a six-wicket win for Oman over Nepal at Wanderers Affies Field.Oman chose to bowl first under heavy cloud cover. On a sluggish second-day wicket, Oman’s medium pacers exploited the conditions expertly. At the forefront was Kaleemullah, who probed a fifth-stump line and had his first two wickets – Gyanendra Malla and Aarif Sheikh – caught behind. A bigger blow came at the start of the 23rd over when he claimed Paras Khadka after an inside edge ricocheted off the pads into the base of the stumps.Six batsman reached double figures for Nepal but none went past Sharad Vesawkar’s 22, Nepal’s top-scorer for the second day in a row. Vesawkar added 36 with Dipendra Airee, before Airee edged Khawar Ali’s legspin to slip for 20. Vesawkar fell seven overs later, beaten for pace attempting to pull Bilal Khan. Kaleemullah returned later to help wipe out the tail, having Rohit Paudel caught on the boundary for 14 at the start of the 44th over. A yorker from Bilal to Sandeep Lamichhane finished the innings in 46 overs. For the second successive day, Aqib Ilyas top-scored with 46 but this time it was in a winning effort. Ilyas neutralized the threat of Lamichhane after he gave Oman a brief scare when he struck in the 11th over, getting Jatinder Singh with a googly for 26. After Ilyas was drawn out of his crease to be stumped by Basant Regmi, Vaibhav Wategaonkar steered the rest of the chase, finishing unbeaten on 37.

Nitish led a fightback through a 64-run third-wicket partnership with Dhanuka Pathirana and brought up his half-century off 75 balls before eventually falling to medium-pacer Mohammad Naveed at the beginning of the 41st over. Mustafa then came back to complete his five-for, holding Canada to 209.Mustafa opened the chase but retired hurt in the fourth over on 6 before Ghulam Shabber joined Ashfaq Ahmed to carry on an 88-run opening stand. The drinks break at the 18-over mark brought Canada back to life as offspinner Nikhil Dutta struck in the 19th over to get Ashfaq for 42, sparking a collapse of three wickets in six balls as Gunasekera claimed two in the next over with his part-time legspin.Shabber went on to top-score with 55 before he was the fifth batsman out, to Dillon Heyliger. Mustafa returned with 80 runs left to win and with storm clouds lurking, UAE were still a handful of runs ahead on Duckworth-Lewis but Nitish’s consecutive strikes in the 43rd over put Canada in front on the calculation for good.Needing 27 off 36 balls and with only the No. 11 Zahoor Khan left to help, Mustafa began turning down singles before taking one on the third ball of the 45th over. Cecil Pervez beat Zahoor on the final ball of the over with a yorker and his lbw appeal was upheld, triggering emotional celebrations from Canada who are now the only remaining unbeaten team in the tournament field.

Leeds United Make Contact For £40k-P/W Newcastle Player

In many ways, Leeds United's last two results – a 4-3 victory over Ipswich Town and a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Salford City – sum up their season so far fairly well.

The Yorkshire club are yet to really get going after a turbulent summer, which is hopefully set to end with them keeping hold of both Wilfried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra.

Given their inconsistent start, it comes as no surprise that Leeds have reportedly turned their attention towards further incomings, with one particular midfielder potentially on the cards before the transfer window slams shut in just one day.

What's the latest Leeds United transfer news?

Some may have said that Daniel Farke was the best signing at Elland Road this summer, but truth be told, the former Norwich City manager is yet to work his magic in Yorkshire.

Leeds got their season underway with a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City, before suffering a shock defeat at the hands of Birmingham City, drawing against West Bromwich Albion, and finally securing victory in dramatic style over Ipswich.

The end of the transfer window should see an end to any off-pitch drama, but Leeds could certainly do with an experienced midfielder before then. And that's where Jeff Hendrick could come in.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, the Yorkshire side have registered their interest in the out-of-favour Newcastle United midfielder.

If they want to secure Hendrick's signature, however, they will reportedly face plenty of competition, with Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, West Brom, and Aberdeen all also interested in the Irishman.

As time runs out in the transfer window, it's certainly one to keep an eye on.

Should Leeds United sign Hendrick?

West Brom target Jeff Hendrick in action for Reading.

Escaping the Championship is no easy task, and Leeds have already found that out the hard way so far this season. Their poor start has, at the very least, highlighted just where they need to strengthen, though, with a midfielder now imperative.

As good a prospect as Archie Gray is, at 17-year-old, he simply can't carry the burden at the heart of Farke's side week in, week out. Instead, Leeds must turn to experience, and crucially, experience in England's second tier.

Hendrick has exactly that, too, and more than warrants his reported £40k per week wage.

The Newcastle midfielder has made 251 appearances in the Championship, and has even played in the play-offs, so he knows all about the heartbreak and occasional joy of England's most brutal knockout games.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

On loan at Reading last season, Hendrick earned plenty of praise, including from former manager Paul Ince, who said, via The Independent: "He gives you six, seven or eight out of ten. He is not a glamorous player by any means but you get what it says on the tin and if you add goals to his game then you've got a very good player. I was pleased for him. He'll be disappointed because scoring twice should be enough to win at home.

"But he is a great lad and the others love him. He trains like a demon every day. He is very professional and I like professional players and he is one you can trust. The thing about football ultimately is that you've got to have 11 players you can trust.

"Sometimes you don't pick the players with the most talent but ones you can trust week in, week out and Jeff is one of those."

Fabrizio Romano: "Brilliant" Chelsea player now desperate to quit next year

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared an important update on the future of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga amid his current loan spell at Real Madrid.

Who has left Chelsea?

Mauricio Pochettino perhaps oversaw one of the biggest transfer overhauls in the Premier League this summer, with a plethora of players both arriving and departing Stamford Bridge.

Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer all put pen to paper on moves to west London before September 1.

Meanwhile, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi all sealed moves the other way.

Chelsea are taking a bit of time to get going under Pochettino, though; winning just one top flight match and drawing another whilst suffering defeats at the hands of West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Defender Ben Chilwell, speaking after his side's latest 1-0 defeat to Forest, said Chelsea have much to improve upon ahead of a long season.

"Very frustrating result and everyone is very disappointed in the changing room right now," explained Chilwell post-match.

"If you look at the stats we dominated the game, had the possession, but the most important stat is the goals. We lost in that department and lost the game, that is the black and white of it and we need to improve."

There is still work to be done to Bridge, but one player who won't be a part of the project is Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard, currently on a temporary stint at La Liga giants Real Madrid, is apparently eyeing up a permanent move away from Chelsea next year.

Arrizabalaga has seemingly been replaced by summer signing Sanchez from Brighton, with renowned transfer source Romano sharing a fresh update latest on the former's future.

“Kepa mentioned that his dream is to continue at Real Madrid, and this is the reality," said Romano on his YouTube channel.

“From what I am told, Kepa’s priority is to find another opportunity in 2024. Real Madrid, or another club. He feels that, with Chelsea, something is now broken. This is why the expectation between Chelsea and Kepa is to part ways.”

What happened to Kepa Arrizabalaga?

The 28-year-old signed for Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, a transfer which broke the world record for most money spent on a goalkeeper.

Arrizabalaga arrived for £71.6 million, but fast-forward half a decade later, supporters will be looking back on his Chelsea career as a real mixed bag.

The shot-stopper has performed well in parts, though; even earning praise from Blues legend Petr Cech.

“I must touch on Kepa, too," wrote Cech in a column for Chelsea's official website last term (via The Standard).

"He had to fill those big boots while Edou has been away, and he has been brilliant in all those games under even more scrutiny than usual.

“You need a strong team and every person ready to help. The goalkeeping group work so hard together to make sure they are all ready for when the moment comes, so Kepa deserves credit too.”
