Ollie Watkins: Goals record & head-to-head stats vs Liverpool

Liverpool will host Aston Villa at the start of September in the two teams' last Premier League fixture before the international break. It's always an interesting fixture and there's perhaps more at stake than ever this season.

After all, Liverpool will hope to rebound after last season and build some early momentum. A repeat of last season can't happen if they're to recapture a top-four place.

But Villa will have eyes on those spots themselves. They're back in European football after a stunning second half of the season under Unai Emery. A win over Liverpool would be a huge statement to start the season and get the team looking up the table going into the international break.

To beat Liverpool, they'll need goals, though. Ollie Watkins could be their best chance of finding them – so we at Football FanCast thought we'd look into his record against the Reds. Here's everything you need to know.

What is Ollie Watkins' goals record against Liverpool?

Watkins has come up against Liverpool six times in his career and his record against them looks pretty great. He's scored five times in that span – the most he's managed against anyone in his career.

Though, it's worth mentioning that three of those goals came in his first appearance against Liverpool. That was a crazy game, finishing 7-2 to Villa as they took advantage of some bizarre defending from the Reds. Watkins took advantage as much as anyone.

His record since is two goals in five games, which isn't quite as impressive. Still, he did manage one against them at home last season – Watkins hasn't forgotten how to find the Liverpool net.

What is Ollie Watkins' assists record against Liverpool?

Watkins only has the one assist against Liverpool, again coming in that 7-2 win. And virtually everyone got an assist in that one.

But then, it's not his game. There aren't too many teams against which he's managed more than a solitary assist, and only two – Luton and Colchester – where Watkins has three.

Don't expect him to supply the goals at Anfield, then – Villa will hope he's on the end of chances, rather than creating them.

What is Ollie Watkins' head-to-head record against Liverpool?

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

It's not a pretty one. In six games, Watkins has only won once against Liverpool – the 7-2 in his first appearance vs them. There's only one draw in his history, too, and that was in the most recent outing in May of this year.

But we're not sure how much you can really read into this. For one, Villa look like a much better side right now than they have in any of Watkins' previous seasons with the club. We fully expect them to give the Reds a proper match this time around, as they did back in May.

All of Watkins' games against the Reds have come in the Premier League, too. He didn't feature in the 4-1 FA Cup defeat against the Reds back in 2021.

What is Ollie Watkins' record at Anfield?

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.

Watkins does only have three games in his career at Anfield, so there's not too much to go on here. All have come in the Premier League and usually end in defeat – two losses, one draw is his record.

As for goals, Watkins does have one. He scored at Anfield in a 2-1 defeat back in 2021 but has been unable to find the net there since that first appearance.

Who has Ollie Watkins scored against the most?

ollie-watkins-aston-villa-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-kane-levy

Two teams have conceded five to Watkins – the most he's managed against a single club. Liverpool are one, of course, with the other being Swansea City. His record against the Reds is slightly better, though, as he managed that total in one fewer game.

There are then three different clubs against whom Watkins has four total goals. Arsenal, Bristol City and Derby County are the unlucky trio – you can usually count on the striker to find the net against them.

How many goals does Ollie Watkins have in September?

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins

Watkins has found the net 11 times in the month of September since the start of his career. However, it doesn't make good reading for those expecting him to net at Anfield.

None of those goals have come in the Premier League, while nine of them weren't even with Aston Villa. Watkins has nine Championship strikes in September and then two for his current club both in the EFL Cup.

He'll be hoping to break his duck against Liverpool.

What is Ollie Watkins' Aston Villa goal record?

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Watkins has played 118 times across all competitions for Villa since arriving in 2020. His record in that span is pretty good, too, with 43 goals and 14 assists so far.

It means Watkins is closing in on his record haul for a club. That stands at 49 for Brentford, where he also managed his most assists – 17. There's every chance that he will overtake both figures by the end of this season.

What is Ollie Watkins' Premier League goal record?

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins

Watkins is now 111 games into his Premier League career, with all of them coming at Aston Villa. In that time, the striker has managed 40 goals – a solid haul for three seasons of work.

Last season was his best yet, too. Watkins scored 15 times in 37 games, beating his first Premier League campaign by one goal in the same number of appearances. His middle season saw him get 11 goals,

There have been 14 assists so far, we should add. In total, Watkins has provided 53 goal contributions in 109 games – so just under one every other game.

What is Aston Villa's record against Liverpool?

Villa vs Liverpool is a fixture that dates all the way back to 1895, so there's a lot of history here. In total, the two teams have met on 201 occasions.

As you might expect, given their dominance over the last few decades, Liverpool's record is far superior in this one. They've won 101 of the 201 meetings, with Villa managing just 59. That leaves 41 draws for those keeping track.

But what about just in the Premier League era? There have been 56 meetings since the rebrand with Liverpool again winning over half. In fact, their record is even better when just counting the last 32 years – 32 wins to Villa's 13.

What is Aston Villa's record at Anfield?

As you may have guessed from the last section, it's not particularly good. This will actually be the 100th time Villa play at Anfield but they'll be hoping for what would be just their 18th win.

So in 99 Anfield fixtures, it's 17 wins, 20 draws and 62 defeats to the Reds. Not exactly a game that's brought a lot of luck their way, then, and a win this time around would be something of a surprise.

What are Aston Villa's recent results against Liverpool?

Unai Emery

Not good. In fact, Villa have lost five of their last six against Liverpool, dating back to their last win in the fixture – the 7-2. The only time they avoided defeat came in the most recent game, too, back in May.

That was a 1-1 draw at Anfield and to be fair to Villa, it's by far the most relevant result here. Not only was it away, but it was also their only meeting with Unai Emery as boss. They shot up the league once the Spaniard took over, becoming so much better that comparing results before him seems unfair to this side.

And the previous results were particularly bad, too.

Since Jurgen Klopp took over at Liverpool, Villa have played 12 games against his team. They've won two of them – the 7-2 and the 5-0 win in the EFL Cup against the Reds' Under 21 side. In other words, this is a fixture they almost always struggle in.

But hey, at least the wins tend to be emphatic.

When is Liverpool vs Aston Villa?

Unai Emery instructs his Aston Villa side as they face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Liverpool host Aston Villa on Sunday, September 3rd at 14:00 UK time. It'll be a huge match for both teams as we get an early idea of what they're about this season.

Liverpool want to bounce back after an incredibly disappointing campaign last time out. Their struggles saw them out of the title race incredibly early on, while they barely managed a top-four challenge in the end. A new midfield could be exactly what they needed, though – it's certainly their gameplan this season.

Villa were only one place behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, of course. A sensational run under Unai Emery saw them climb all the way up from the bottom into the Europa League spot – and they'll have plans to do even better this time around. The right transfers – and some momentum carried on from last season – could see Villa threaten to go one better.

A win in this fixture, then, would be a sign for either that they mean business from the off this time around.

New £30m Arsenal Signing Has Awkward Tattoo About Gunners

Goalkeeper David Raya has a slightly awkward tattoo that may raise some eyebrows as he edges closer to a summer transfer to Arsenal.

What's the latest on David Raya to Arsenal?

Despite already having Aaron Ramsdale as the club's number one shot-stopper – and only giving him a new contract back in May that runs until 2026, with the option of a further year – the Gunners are closing in on a deal for an alternative option between the sticks.

Indeed, as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the latest news is that Brentford's Raya has "completed" the main part of medical tests at London Colney and so is set to officially sign shortly.

In terms of the financials, it's expected that the Spaniard will join for an initial £3m loan fee with the option of making the switch permanent for a further £27m next summer (via The Athletic).

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

This seems like pretty good business for Mikel Arteta and co, especially as they have been forced to ask fast in the market with backup goalkeeper Matt Turner heading to Nottingham Forest for a reported £10m transfer fee this week.

Interestingly, however, Raya has a tattoo which actually references a game he once played against Arsenal, and it may not go down well with many fans.

What is David Raya's tattoo?

As you can see in the image below, on the back of his neck, the goalkeeper has been inked to reference his Premier League debut.

The tattoo is of a date – "13-08-21" – the 13th of August 2021. Unfortunately for Arsenal, this happened to be the day they famously travelled to take on newly promoted Brentford on the opening day of the Premier League and were soundly beaten 2-0 with Raya keeping a clean sheet.

The Gunners were hit by a series of positive Covid tests shortly before kick-off with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Willian and Alex Runarsson all ruled out of the game at the last moment, leaving manager Arteta surprised as to why the game was postponed.

The Bees took full advantage, however, in what turned out to be a miserable night for the North London outfit. BBC journalist Phil McNulty summed it up in his match report, writing: "Brentford celebrated their return to the top tier after a 74-year absence with a memorable, magnificent victory over woeful Arsenal as they opened their Premier League campaign in style."

Seeing as this was the first time Raya had played in the English top flight, and his team won so convincingly, you can see why he would want to commemorate the event with a tattoo.

However, this was a real low point during the Arteta reign, so Arsenal fans and players alike won't want to be reminded of it whenever the camera pans to show their new goalkeeper.

Still, so long as the 27-year-old can put in some strong performances for the club – potentially even taking the number one shirt from Ramsdale – then this small issue will likely be forgotten.

For now, it will certainly be interesting to see how often Raya plays over the course of the season with Arteta having two first-team quality goalkeepers to pick from every week.

'Not a time to panic' – Root

A downcast Joe Root suggested that England’s senior players still have a role to play in the future after England surrendered their hold on the Ashes in an innings-and-41-run defeat

George Dobell in Perth18-Dec-20172:27

Root puts poor form down to ‘trying too hard’

England’s Ashes defeat is not “a fair reflection” of how they have played or “what we’re capable” of achieving, according to Joe Root.Encouraged by England’s ability to compete for periods in each game but frustrated by their inability to sustain it, England’s captain urged his side to learn from Australia’s ability to seize the key moments and register better results in the final two matches of the series.”One of the most frustrating things is that we haven’t been blown away or completely outplayed,” Root said, despite victory margins of 10 wickets in Brisbane, 120 runs in Adelaide and an innings and 41 runs in Perth. “We have put up some really good performances in all three matches, but not for long enough.”There have been periods when we have matched and outplayed Australia. But credit to them, because they grasped the key moments in each game. We have got to learn from that. Our biggest challenge in the two remaining games is get in a position of strength, drive it home and make sure we walk away with some results from this tour.”I don’t think these three games is a fair reflection of how we’ve played and what we’re capable of. So, I think we need to do ourselves and the supporters back home justice in the final two games of the series.”While Root, the England captain, admitted his side had been “outplayed in all three games” he urged the team management not to panic and insisted that the senior players who had underperformed in Australia – Alastair Cook in particular – should still be in the side in a year’s time.”I’d like to think they are still in the side in a year,” Root said. “They have a huge amount of experience and they do offer a lot to this group. Their performances over a long period of time speak for themselves. I see no reason why throughout the rest of this series they can’t do well again.A lot to ponder for Joe Root•Getty ImagesThe senior guys have proved they can produce for England time and again. It is very important that me and Trevor Bayliss don’t panic or make hasty decisions despite three games which haven’t gone in our favour. We have to be very realistic about where we are as a side and what is going to be most important is making sure we field a team that is going to give us the best chance to win.”Cook has done it so many times before. He is a very stubborn guy who likes proving people wrong. As he said before this game, the amount of extra work he is putting in behind the scenes tell me he is desperate to keep going.”On the state of the WACA pitch, which required the use of leaf-blowers to remove some notable damp patches, Root was cautious in his criticism, particularly after Jonny Bairstow’s early dismissal to a delivery that kept noticeably low.”When we got here this morning it definitely wasn’t fit to play,” he said. “But it dried up this morning, the sun got to it, the wind got it, they obviously worked very hard to get it right, and by the end there it was probably fit to play.”

Wells and Bosisto secure draw for Western Australia

Western Australia opener Jon Wells scored the third hundred of his first-class career as the Warriors frustrated Victoria by playing out a draw on the final day at the MCG. Fellow opener Will Bosisto fell just short of a century himself, caught behind off the bowling of Chris Tremain for 98, but the 195-run stand he and Wells had built was enough to prevent a Victoria win.The day had started with Western Australia on 0 for 86 in their second innings, needing a further 121 to make the Victorians bat again. The openers cruised past that mark before Wells was the first man to fall, caught off the bowling of Jon Holland for 107. Hilton Cartwright was caught behind off Daniel Christian for 13, before the captains agreed at 3 for 281 that no result was possible and they called the game off.Victoria used 10 bowlers as the match petered out, with only wicketkeeper Seb Gotch not rolling his arm over. Mitchell Marsh finished unbeaten on 38 and Marcus Stoinis was on 16. The result means that Victoria, winners of the past three Sheffield Shield titles, head into the break in the season without a single win.

IPL franchises split over player retentions

While a few franchises have suggested retaining five players, others favoured utilising the right-to-match cards

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Nov-2017

BCCI

Less than three months before the next IPL player auction, there is no consensus among the franchises on the number of players that can be retained in a squad. At a crucial meeting between the BCCI and the franchise owners on Tuesday in Mumbai, many owners were split between retaining as many as five players or none, but most favoured utilising the right-to-match (RTM) card option at the auction. It was also decided that the player auction will take place in India in the last week of January.Tuesday’s meeting was attended by owners, including Shah Rukh Khan and Jay Mehta (Kolkata Knight Riders), Akash Ambani (Mumbai Indians), Ness Wadia and Mohit Burman (Kings XI Punjab) and Manoj Badale (Rajasthan Royals). The meeting was called by the BCCI at the behest of the Committee of Administrators, which wanted to apprise the owners of the discussions that took place during the IPL Governing Council meeting on October 24. Last month the IPL Governing Council heard a presentation by Hemang Amin, the IPL’s chief operating officer, on various important topics including the number of retentions, the purse available for the auction and the RTM card. Amin’s presentation was based on his meeting with all eight franchises. While the Governing Council was in favour of allowing teams to retain three players, the owners of the two richest franchises, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, argued in favour of retaining a maximum of five and four players respectively on Tuesday. ESPNcricinfo understands Mumbai wanted to retain five players and use two RTMs at the player auction, and were backed by Super Kings, who are back in the IPL after a two-year suspension and had suggested retaining four players with one RTM at the auction. However, Knight Riders proposed no retentions and sought five RTMs at the auction. Two franchises – Kings XI and Rajasthan Royals, the latter being the second franchise to return having served a two-year suspension – informed the BCCI that they wanted to build their teams from the scratch and did not want any retentions or RTMs. Meanwhile, Sunrisers and Royal Challengers were happy with three retentions and two RTMs.It is also understood that in the case of both Super Kings and Royals, they can only retain players from their 2015 squads. It comes as no surprise that both Mumbai and Super Kings, who have won the IPL multiple times, were in favour of retaining the maximum players in their attempts to keep their core group intact. Both teams included established match-winners who have been with the franchises for a long time.Mumbai will be keen to retain players like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and probably Kieron Pollard, along with Krunal Pandya and Harbhajan Singh. Super Kings, on the other hand, would want to retain MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina and possibly the overseas duo of Faf du Plessis and Brendon McCullum.According to an IPL official, Knight Riders, Royals and Kings XI Punjab suggested the salary cap could be hiked to INR 70-80 crore per team, up from INR 63 crore at the auction in 2017, while the other franchises left that decision to the IPL governing council. The official also said the formula previously used to calculate the salary of a retained player would remain the same. This means that, based on the number of retentions, a retained player would get a percentage of the actual purse.Among the other decisions at the meeting, the IPL has allowed Kings XI to play three of their home matches outside Chandigarh as long as the remaining four home games are played at their home base in Mohali.A final decision is yet to be taken on Royals’ home base of Jaipur, which is affiliated to the Rajasthan Cricket Association that was suspended by the BCCI in 2014 after Lalit Modi became its president. However, with Modi calling time on his tenure as an administrator recently, the BCCI will decide on the status of the RCA’s suspension at its special general meeting on December 9. It is understood that Royals have told the IPL they want to play in Jaipur.According to the IPL official, final decisions on all the matters are likely to be taken at the next Governing Council meeting, which will then have to be approved by the COA. “There was, to a large extent, a consensus between the franchises on many issues. All of them want the league to grow bigger. Soon, we will deliberate on the suggestions given today and take a final decision,” the official said.

Shakib, Tamim fire Bangladesh to their biggest ODI win

Bangladesh’s four seniormost cricketers came to the fore to deliver them a 163-run win – their biggest in ODIs – over Sri Lanka in Mirpur

The Report by Mohammad Isam19-Jan-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAFPBangladesh’s four seniormost cricketers came to the fore to deliver them a 163-run win – their biggest in ODIs – over Sri Lanka in Mirpur. It was a wretched performance from Sri Lanka all around. In the face of a daunting Bangladesh total of 320 for 7, their batsmen lasted just 32.2 overs. And their bowlers hardly tested Bangladesh’s line-up.Each of Bangladesh’s batting core came good. Tamim Iqbal made 84 off 102 balls. Shakib struck an aggressive 67 at more than a run a ball. And Mushfiqur Rahim blasted 62. All of that meant Bangladesh managed good partnerships through their innings. Their first three pairs, involving Tamim, Anamul Haque, Shakib and Mushfiqur, each strung together 50-plus partnerships, only the second time that their first four batsmen have made such a productive start.Tamim and Anamul began by putting on 71 for the first wicket, before Shakib joined Tamim for a 99-run stand. It laid a solid foundation as a 300-plus total looked imminent very early. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however. Anamul survived three chances – two catches and a stumping – on his way to 35. Tamim was slow off his blocks, but opened up after notching up a second successive fifty. Tamim took a particular liking to the short stuff dished out at him. Not even getting struck on the helmet twice could deter him. In all, he struck seven fours and two straight sixes, both off successive Gunaratne deliveries.Shakib was more forthcoming against the short ball, hammering boundaries through midwicket and square-leg. He was equally effective in pinching the singles with well-timed pull shots.Mushfiqur made sure to keep up the good work during his 57-run third-wicket stand with Shakib. After Shakib’s dismissal, he kept Bangladesh ticking with a 42-ball half-century that pushed the total towards the 300 mark.Cameos from Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman capped off a strong batting performance, although Sri Lanka reined in the home team with three quick wickets in the last five overs. The penultimate over from Thisara Perera was especially impressive, with Perera consistently finding the lengths he was looking for. But Sabbir and Mohammad Saifuddin made up for some of the lost ground in a 19-run last over that had Lakmal giving away three fours and a six.Sri Lanka had no such flourish when they replied. Mashrafe Mortaza shut out any chances of a brisk start in a fine opening spell. Kusal Perera fell in the third over, and by the end of the first Powerplay, they had lost both their openers and only three fours had come off the bat.Mashrafe, who bowled a first spell of eight overs, had Tharanga caught at mid-off before sending back Kusal Mendis in similar fashion in the 14th over.Dickwella, who came in for the injured Angelo Mathews, was bowled by Mustafizur Rahman in the 19th over, before Shakib’s brilliance on the field sent Sri Lanka plummeting further – a direct hit from mid-off catching Dinesh Chandimal short of his crease in the 25th over.Shakib removed Gunaratne and Wanindu Hasaranga off successive balls in the next over. Thisara Perera unleashed a burst that was all-too-short, lashing Shakib for two fours and as many sixes in the 30th over, but fell later in the same over, caught at long-off attempting another ambitious stroke.Rubel Hossain ended the procession with wickets in successive overs as Sri Lanka folded in the 33rd over. He finished with two wickets, as did Mashrafe, while Shakib took three wickets to go with his 67.

Relentless Smith finds a fresh ally

As Australia ground their way to an MCG stalemate with England on a pitch that possessed qualities of indestructibility on par with a cockroach, the two men at the crease were suspects usual and unusual. Taking the hosts to lunch effectively 4 for 14, there was still a glimmer for Joe Root’s team, and they did not technically need to dismiss the currently “unbowlable” Steven Smith to get there – six other wickets would do just as nicely.Instead, the tourists found themselves frustrated by the No. 6, Mitchell Marsh, who negotiated a few awkward early moments against the reverse-swinging ball before slipping into a supporting role that would have made his father Geoff Marsh, a stodgy opener who once batted all of 628 minutes for 355 in a Sheffield Shield match, doubly proud. Where Marsh had joined Smith in a domineering partnership on a faster pitch in Perth, here he provided a two-footed defensive wall that England could not surmount. In the aftermath of a match that averted the prospect of a whitewash for England and will surely bring about plenty of introspection at the Melbourne Cricket Club about the moribund state of its drop-in Test pitch, Smith was most proud of how Marsh had adapted. He revealed, too, that Marsh felt he had broken new ground, playing the sort of innings he had been neither technically nor temperamentally capable of the previous summer.”Really pleased with him, the way he played,” Smith said of Marsh. “Walking off today he actually said ‘I’m proud of myself, 12 months ago I wouldn’t have been able to do that’. He’s come a long way. Obviously, he had to change the way he normally plays, he’s normally very aggressive and very positive. To face 160 balls for his 30-odd was a really good effort.”Given how thoroughly he has dominated England with the bat, Smith needs only to find someone capable of batting with him for extended periods to ensure Australia’s safety from defeat or launchpad for victory. At various points in this series, he has had help from Mitchell and Shaun Marsh, Pat Cummins, Usman Khawaja and David Warner. While the likes of Khawaja and Cameron Bancroft have endured disappointing series, “Smith and [insert team-mate’s name here]” has generally been good enough.”I’ve spent a lot of time out there throughout this series and this hundred and obviously the hundred in Brisbane were two of my slowest,” Smith said. “I’ve had to work really hard but I feel like my game is in really good order. I’m adapting to each of the bowlers, changing my plans to them and how they’re trying to get me out. I’m making sure that I’m in front of the game as much as possible and hopefully I can just keep working and keep getting better as well.”I just want to be out there batting. I don’t actually like watching cricket that much and would prefer to be out there batting and just getting the job done. That’s part of it but you’ve just got to try and stay as focused as you can each ball and treat every ball like a different challenge and get through as many as you can and that’s what I’m doing at the moment.”There has been mounting praise for Smith throughout this summer, coinciding with how he has carried on adding relentlessly to his series aggregate while steadily climbing the list of Test run-makers at an average that currently leaves him second only to Don Bradman. In Melbourne he shrugged off a sore right hand in the first innings by utilising a noticeably lighter bottom-hand grip on the blade, and by day five was back scoring in more typical fashion.”Shame we had to call it off in the last hour, could have had another hour out there,” Smith quipped. “It’s good fun. I’m enjoying it at the moment. I feel like I’m hitting the ball really well and hopefully I can end the series really well in Sydney.Mitchell Marsh and Steven Smith walk back after an exhausting day•Ryan Pierse/Getty Images

“I read different things that people write but in the end I don’t think about it, I just go out and play and try and get better each and every day. Playing this game you can never be satisfied and never think you’re too good for the game, the game can come back to bite you pretty quickly. Got to work hard and each time I go to middle make sure I’ve got my routines and try and get myself in the zone each and every single time and want to bat and make runs and get Australia in good positions.”Hopefully I’ve got a few more left in me. I feel like I’ve certainly got a lot more cricket left in front of me. I love to make more big runs and help Australia win games and series. I don’t play for the personal accolades, I play to do everything I can for Australia and as a captain leading from the front and trying to do my job as a batsman. Hopefully I can get a few more big runs and help Australia win a few more games.”Assessing the way the Australians had fallen behind in this match, Smith said that a lack of concentration with the bat on the second morning had been damaging, but denied there was any sense of “dead-rubber syndrome” about the lapse. “We let ourselves down a bit in the first innings,” he said.”We were in a pretty good position after the first day, three down and then we lost 7 for 60, and from there were a little bit behind the game – 350 just not enough in the first innings. Credit to England, thought they bowled really well in that morning and throughout the day and then obviously I dropped a couple of chances as well and that probably cost us quite a bit. Just hard to get in front of the game and try to get a result on that wicket.”You’ve still got to put it out of your mind and just continue to try and play good cricket and win the game for your team, dead rubber or not, it’s still a Test match and each Test means something to each and every one in both change rooms. No one ever thinks of anything as a dead rubber as a player, you just do everything you can do to win.”Australia’s priorities will be given further clarity once the team travels to Sydney for the final Test of the series. Ashton Agar has returned to the squad as the second spin bowler, having worked nicely opposite Nathan Lyon in Bangladesh earlier in the year, while Smith and the selectors will wait to decide whether or not Mitchell Starc’s heel has recovered sufficiently for consideration. One thing is for sure, all are relieved that Starc was not subjected to five days of toil on the MCG pitch.

Tottenham: Spurs Chiefs Eyeing "Gold" Defender Signing

Tottenham Hotspur could make a conditional late move for Leicester City defender Wout Faes as journalist Sacha Tavolieri shares news out of Spurs.

Who will Spurs sign?

In the last 48 hours, plenty of noise has surrounded the likes of Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson as manager Ange Postecoglou weighs up late Harry Kane replacements.

Spurs have so far sealed deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, youngster Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz, but rumour has it there could be more.

The north Londoners must apparently shift unwanted players out of the door to free up squad space first, though, as the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Davinson Sanchez, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier are linked to leaving the club.

Postecoglou, speaking earlier this month, was up front and honest over Tottenham's need to sell before the 11pm deadline tomorrow.

Ange Postecoglou

"The reality of it is we can't just keep acquiring players," said the Spurs head coach.

"We've got too big a squad as it is. It affects the training, the players themselves because they all want to play and be involved.

"It's not so much one has to happen for the other but our focus at the moment is trimming the squad down and seeing where that takes us in terms of reinforcements. We're assessing that on a daily basis. There's still two weeks to go in the window and I'm sure you'll see some movement."

With just over a day to go until the window shuts, it will be interesting to see if Spurs can indeed sell/loan enough players to move for transfer targets.

Indeed, this comes amid claims that Tottenham are still keen on signing more central defensive cover following the signing of van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

Faes, who dropped to the Championship with Leicester last season, is apparently very much liked by the Tottenham hierarchy as they eye a late move for him.

That is according to reporter Tavolieri, who took to X with some news that Spurs are interested in the Belgian, and could well swoop if they manage to sell Dier.

"Infos #THFC," wrote Tavolieri.

"Tottenham Hotspur already seeking several options in case Eric Dier leaves #Spurs including Wout Faes who’s is a profile appreciated by the management."

Faes started 31 top flight matches for Leicester last season, standing out as their most regularly-selected central defender.

What's been said about Wout Faes?

The Belgium international ace has been praised by members of the media, perhaps most notably former England star Gary Lineker, who said Leicester struck "gold" with Faes.

Meanwhile, former Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers once also heaped praise on his former defender.

"I've been very impressed," said Rodgers.

"He plays as if he's much older. He knows football – and having guys in your backline that know the game makes a huge difference.

"He's well-educated in football, you can see that in how he plays and his game is suited to the Premier League. He's aggressive for us. The types of defenders I like – he defends forward, he presses the game."
