England completed their warm-ups for Sunday’s first ODI by easing to a comfortable seven-wicket win against the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI at Fatullah. In a rain-reduced contest, the result was never in doubt after England’s bowlers reduced their opponents to 80 for 7 inside the first 22 overs of the match. An eighth-wicket stand of 55 between Tanvir Haider and Alauddin Babu ensured a reasonably competitive total of 151 for 8, but the target was knocked off with 11.4 overs remaining.Alastair Cook did the damage at the top of the order, easing to 52 from 51 balls before retiring at 81 for 1, whereupon Matt Prior – relieved of the gloves to give Craig Kieswetter a chance to show the full range of his abilities – did his best to keep his own place in the starting XI with an unbeaten 64. Prior did, however, survive in peculiar circumstances shortly before the conclusion of the match, when he holed out to deep midwicket for 51, only for the umpire to call dead-ball, apparently because of some interfering music from the stands.Genuine alarms were few and far between for England’s batsmen, although Kevin Pietersen missed out on time in the middle for the second match running. He was promoted to open after his controversial first-ball duck on Tuesday, but managed just 6 before slashing Babu to Junaid Siddique at slip. Eoin Morgan was the other man to fall, as he sized up a reverse sweep off Mahmudul Hasan, and was bowled for 9.After torrential overnight rain, the match began more than two hours behind schedule, with the overs reduced to 37 per side. When the BCB XI top-order collapsed to Ryan Sidebottom and Tim Bresnan, it seemed that the recalculation would be immaterial. But Haider instilled a measure of calm with a well-constructed 35, before Babu cracked five late boundaries to top-score with 43 and give the innings some respectability.Sidebottom made the first breakthrough when Shahriar Nafees prodded a simple chance to Bresnan at mid-on, only two balls after his opening partner, Siddique, had been put down at second slip by James Tredwell. Siddique was unable to make his good fortune count, however, as Tredwell soon made amends to give Bresnan his first wicket of the innings.Aftab Ahmed has a hard-hitting reputation, and he briefly thrilled a sizeable and enthusiastic crowd by clobbering Sidebottom over square leg for six, before belting Bresnan straight back down the ground. But in the same over, he nibbled outside off, to give an easy catch to Kieswetter behind the stumps. One over later, and Imtiaz Hossain missed a straight one from Sidebottom to be pinned lbw for 0, leaving the hopes of the innings in the hands of Raqibul Hasan. He responded cautiously at first, picking off the singles to reach 19 from 39 balls, in a 28-run stand for the fifth wicket with Mahmudul Hasan. But Liam Plunkett lured Raqibul into a poked edge to the keeper, before Tredwell’s offspin accounted for two wickets in three overs – Mahmudul chipped a soft catch to Luke Wright at midwicket, before Mashrafe Mortaza, whose arrival was greeted with the biggest roar of the day, dampened the spirits of the crowd by holing out to Plunkett at long-on for a third-ball duck.A spirited performance from Alauddin and Haider at least gave the BCB a nominal total to defend. Haider batted sensibly in a 55-ball stay, before aiming a wild heave at Shahzad only for Cook to make good ground with a low take at wide mid-on. Alauddin, whose only half-chance came when Kieswetter was slow to react to a top-edged pull off Bresnan, then carried his team past 150 with a handful of lusty blows.

Victoria close in to worry Tasmania

Three Tasmanians collected half-centuries but they were in danger of giving Victoria a first-innings advantage at Bellerive Oval. After being dismissed early in the day for 297, the Bushrangers struck regularly and finished with the upper hand as the hosts reached 7 for 249.Tim Paine’s bright 64, Dan Marsh’s 60 and 53 to Ed Cowan put Tasmania on track for two points, but they were set back late in the day when Marsh and Luke Butterworth departed to leave Brett Geeves and Jason Krejza with a tough task in the morning. There were also some difficulties early in the innings as the Tigers slipped to 4 for 88 when Cowan exited, but the middle order was able to overcome the initial problems. Paine collected seven fours and a six in his 83-ball innings while Marsh, the former captain, was more considered in his 157-ball stay.At the start of the day John Hastings resumed on 82 and was annoyed to miss his maiden century when bowled by Butterworth on 93. He deserved to be satisfied with his effort and went on to add two wickets, as did James Pattinson and Damien Wright.

Agent handles offer from Spurs

As per Mundo Deportivo, relayed by Sport Witness, another update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to sign Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.

The Lowdown: Spurs join race…

The 24-year-old has been of heavy interest to Spurs according to reports from these last few months with 90min first claiming that Fabio Paratici had joined the race for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Dembele’s deal at Barcelona expires at the end of this season, making him one of the many potential 2022 free agents linked with a move to north London.

It appears Tottenham have their sights set on big names for low fees with Mundo Deportivo now bringing an update on the pursuit of the Catalans forward.

The Latest: Agent handles Spurs offer…

As per their information, via SW, Dembele’s representative is handling an ‘offer’ from Tottenham for the player’s services as Paratici chases the France international.

However, he also has proposals from various other clubs, including Chelsea, who they seem to favour more as it stands.

That’s due to Spurs, Man United and Newcastle not guaranteeing as much as the Blues when it comes to reaching ‘high levels’.

The Verdict: Avoid…

Chelsea being ahead of Spurs in the race for Dembele as it stands could actually be a blessing in disguise for manager Antonio Conte.

Despite Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s recent claim he is ‘better than Mbappe’ (footballtransfers.com), the 27-cap star’s history of hamstring problems combined with a sky high £210,000-per-week salary make this a risky move from Paratici’s perspective.

Tottenham recently announced an £80.2m pre-tax loss for the last financial year, taking their overall club debt to £706m, and the last thing they need is another financial strain on the club.

Dembele’s ability is evident, with former boss Ronald Koeman calling him ‘fantastic’ for his return to form earlier this year, but his signing would still raise eyebrows at Tottenham with the obstacles involved.

Bale to Spurs update emerges

As per Super Deporte, an update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans and it involves former fan favourite Gareth Bale.

The Lowdown: Another Bale return?

After the Wales international star spent 2020/2021 on loan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Lilywhites have surprisingly been linked with re-signing him yet again.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Speaking to El Chiringuito TV recently, journalist Eduardo Inda claimed that manager Antonio Conte had personally requested that Spurs snap up the Real Madrid forward over Eden Hazard.

Bale’s contract is set to expire in 2022 with the 32-year-old able to negotiate pre-contract free summer moves to other clubs in January.

Now, an update has emerged involving Tottenham as the club, and by extension transfer chief Fabio Paratici, allegedly eye a move.

The Latest: Spurs ‘most interested’…

According to Super Deporte, Tottenham are the ‘most interested’ team when it comes to signing Bale but want him on a free deal in summer 2022 as opposed to paying a fee in January.

However, it is Conte who is set to have the ‘last word’ on this potential transfer as Spurs wait for the Italian to green light a move.

The Verdict: Avoid…

Bale finished last year as Tottenham’s third-most threatening player in the English top flight in terms of goals and assists combined behind superstar duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min (WhoScored), but we believe Conte should avoid another reunion.

His return to north London was also marred by fitness issues at various points with ex-boss Jose Mourinho even calling out Bale for an Instagram post on his condition (Wales Online).

Scoring a career total 183 goals, there is little doubting the forward can shine on his day, especially at international level – with Wales teammate Daniel James recently branding Bale ‘unbelievable’ (FIFA).

However, his injury record suggests that he isn’t a player Conte can rely upon regularly, not to mention his sky high salary demands could be too much of a financial strain on Tottenham when locked into a permanent deal.

Newcastle linked with Arthur Cabral

Given Newcastle’s very poor start to the season, it’s safe to say that they could do with something to help them get their campaign on track and lift them out of the relegation zone.

However, it seems as though the new owners at the Tyneside club may have identified someone who could help to get the team out of their current predicament.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Goal in Brazil (via Sport Witness) that Newcastle have entered the race to sign FC Basel striker Arthur Cabral and are preparing an offer to be sent in the coming days.

Cabral originally joined Basel back in the 2019 summer transfer window on loan from Brazilian club Palmeiras before signing on a permanent basis a year later.

Overall, the 23-year-old – who is currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt – has netted an impressive 63 goals in 101 appearances across all competitions, with 25 of those coming this season in just 26 appearances, which is probably why Newcastle apparently have their eye on him.

Having described himself as a “fighting” player on the pitch, Cabral could be just what Newcastle need to keep them away from the relegation zone with his clear attacking talents in front of goal.

In addition to his goals, Cabral has averaged 4.1 shots and 1.3 key passes per game in the Swiss league so far this season, which is much higher than Callum Wilson’s average of 2.3 shots per game in the Premier League prior to their match against Burnley on Saturday.

Looking ahead to the January transfer window and the teams that Newcastle face in the league before the window opens, it should be the club’s main priority to sign Cabral in January to see if he can form a deadly strike partnership with the prolific Wilson and score enough goals between them to transform Howe’s side.

Also, given his fairly young age, he could well be a long-term replacement for Wilson further down the line, with the Englishman six years older than Cabral.

Gallian announces retirement

Jason Gallian has announced his retirement after losing his place in the Essex first team. It brings to an end a 19-year career split between Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Essex with a brief England spell in 1995.Gallian, 38, was born and raised in Sydney and played youth cricket for Australia before throwing his lot in with England when he signed for Lancashire. He moved to Nottinghamshire in 1998 where he had a spell as captain, but it wasn’t always a smooth time for him and he had a falling out with Kevin Pietersen. In 2008 he joined Essex where he recaptured some solid form and helped them win two trophies, but in 2009 has managed just five Championship matches with an average 13.33″I have spent 19 years playing professional cricket which I have thoroughly enjoyed and had a great experience and several challenges along the way,” he told the Essex website. “My last challenge has been at Essex, and the highlight in 2008 was being involved in the winning of two trophies.”However, all good things come to an end. Essex has a lot of young players coming through and it is their time now to perform. I am pleased to have finished my playing career at a club as good as Essex”.Paul Grayson, the Essex first eleven coach, said: “Jason has done well for us for the past two years. He played some really good one-day cricket in 2008. Unfortunately Jason has struggled for runs in the County Championship this season. He is good to have around the dressing room with his knowledge and experience of the game. All of us wish him well in the future.”Gallian scored 15,266 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 37.50 including a career best 312 for Lancashire against Derbyshire. He earned England selection in 1995 against West Indies, but broke his finger on debut at Edgbaston. He played another Test at the end of that series and one in South Africa but was a victim of the inconsistent selection policy of the era.Essex have also released offspinner James Middlebrook and quick bowler Jahid Ahmed.

Rangers: Gerrard must unleash Scott Arfield

Rangers will look to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership as they travel to face St Mirren on Sunday.

Heading into the weekend, the Gers sat at the summit of the table on 20 points, whilst tomorrow’s opponent’s were seventh and have only lost two of their opening nine matches.

Steven Gerrard’s team come into the game off the back of a 2-0 win over Danish side Brondby in the Europa League on Thursday night, so will he make any changes to the starting XI? We believe that one player he should bring into the fold is central midfielder Scott Arfield.

The experienced Scottish-born Canadian impressed during his cameo off the bench on Thursday, recording a SofaScore rating of 7.00 in 12 minutes. As per SofaScore, he won both of his duels, made one tackle and one interception, and provided one key pass as well as hitting the post with a good effort on goal.

It is time to forget about Steven Davis starting against St Mirren and Gerrard to unleash Arfield in midfield for the Gers. We published an article explaining why the 36-year-old should be axed from the starting XI after his disappointing performance against Brondby.

Arfield is a proven performer for Rangers and could come in to give the Northern Irishman a rest. Last season, the 32-year-old averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.85 in 28 games as he chipped in with four goals and five assists in the Premiership

During the campaign, Gerrard lauded the midfielder for what he offers in and out of position in the middle of the park, which hints at what he could bring to the side this weekend against St Mirren.

The Gers boss said: “Scott epitomises what we want. Out of possession he shows grit, he shows fight, he’s there for you and in possession, he’s always available. He stands up to be counted at important times, so we’re extremely happy with Scott at the moment.”

This highlights why Gerrard must unleash the £16k-per-week beast on Sunday to show what he can do with a first league start of the season. It would allow an underperforming Davis to have a rest and focus on getting back to his best in training, whilst also throwing a bone to Arfield to see if he can stake a claim for a regular starting berth for the Gers.

New South Wales lose Cowan, gain Watson

New South Wales have named a largely unchanged squad for 2009-10 with the departure of the opener Ed Cowan and the addition of the allrounder Shane Watson the only major alterations. Cowan has moved to Tasmania to increase his opportunities while Watson has relocated from Queensland. The left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who made his Sheffield Shield debut late last season, has ousted his fellow fast man Scott Coyte from the state squad. The other new faces are the batting allrounder Phillip Wells and the left-arm orthodox spinner Luke Doran, who have both been handed rookie deals.Josh Hazlewood, the promising fast bowler, will be available more often having now finished his schooling and moved to Sydney from the Tamworth region. With ten New South Wales players receiving Cricket Australia contracts for the next year, the Blues were able to name a group with impressive depth as they aim for quick improvement having finished last in the Sheffield Shield last summer.”There is no doubt that this season will again offer enormous opportunity to the younger players,” the Cricket New South Wales chief executive David Gilbert said. “I am sure that they will build on their experience from last season and help us challenge in all three domestic competitions.”New South Wales squad Aaron Bird, Doug Bollinger (Cricket Australia contract), Nathan Bracken (CA), Mark Cameron, Beau Casson, Stuart Clark (CA), Michael Clarke (CA), Burt Cockley, Peter Forrest, Brad Haddin (CA), Nathan Hauritz (CA), Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Phillip Hughes (CA), Phil Jaques, Simon Katich (CA), Usman Khawaja, Grant Lambert, Brett Lee (CA), Greg Mail, Peter Nevill, Stephen O’Keefe, Ben Rohrer, Daniel Smith, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Dominic Thornely, David Warner, Shane Watson (CA).Rookies Daniel Burns, James Crosthwaite, Luke Doran, Scott Henry, Simon Keen, Joshua Lalor, Phillip Wells.

Aston Villa: Guilbert impressing on loan

Having joined Aston Villa in what was a £4.5m deal back in January of 2019, the Villa Park faithful may well have thought that Dean Smith had landed a player who would become the 50-year-old’s first-choice right-back for many a season to come.

This idea would have more than likely been reinforced in the club’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign, with the £5.4m-rated man going on to make 25 appearances in the top flight, over which the defender helped his side keep two clean sheets, registered two assists and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.6 key passes, two interceptions, three tackles and winning 6.6 duels per game.

These returns saw the former France U21 international earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.77, ranking him as Villa’s joint ninth-best performer in the league.

However, after the club’s £14.18m capture of Nottingham Forest right-back Matty Cash in the summer of 2020, Guilbert’s spot in the Villa starting XI appeared to be in considerable threat. That was something that ultimately proved to be the case when Smith failed to award the 26-year-old a single Premier League appearance in 2020/21, before sending the defender on loan to RC Strasbourg in the January transfer window.

Despite impressing over his 13 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring one goal, registering four assists and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.16, Smith once again took the decision to loan the right-back out this summer, with Strasbourg being more than happy to welcome the defender back to Stade de la Meinau for the 2021/22 campaign.

And, so far this season, Guilbert has continued to impress over his six Ligue 1 appearances for Julien Stephan’s side, having already helped his side keep one clean sheet, provided one assist and created two big chances, in addition to making an average of 1.2 key passes, two interceptions, 2.2 tackles and winning five duels per fixture.

These metrics have seen the £40k-per-week defender average a SofaScore match rating of 7.13, ranking him as the French side’s second-best performer in the league.

As such, while Cash is undeniably a fantastic right-back, considering the fact that the 24-year-old is Smith’s only senior option in the position, coupled with Guilbert’s impressive performances while out on loan, the 50-year-old’s decision to bomb the Frenchman out of his squad appears to be a rather strange one.

Indeed, Guilbert is undoubtedly a player who possesses the ability to push Cash for his starting spot in the Villa XI, something that would help to maintain the £19.8m-rated man’s current level of performance, while, should he pick up a serious injury, or even simply suffer a dip in form, Smith’s call regarding Guilbert could prove to be a rather big mistake on the part of the Villa manager.
