Hayden bows out after tough summer

Matthew Hayden, Australia’s most successful opening batsman, has ended a dire home Test campaign by deciding to step down

Amid the lack of runs, the calls for his sacking and the support from team-mates, Matthew Hayden knew it was time to go when he was picking tomatoes with his daughter Grace on Saturday. Hayden, Australia’s most successful opening batsman, stepped down after a dire home Test campaign to end his chances of bowing out at the Ashes and deny his six-year-old girl’s request for “one more Christmas” in Melbourne. In the Champions Room at the Gabba, a ground as familiar to Hayden as his backyard, he tried not to cry, but stumbled a few times as he read his retirement speech. With Ricky Ponting by his side – he gave encouragement when his friend stalled while talking of his love of playing for his state and country – Hayden spoke for more than half an hour about his past and his future. He remains determined to contribute more to the game than 103 Tests, 30 hundreds and 8625 runs at 50.73. “Importantly for me today, I’m retiring from cricket, not from life,” he said. “I want to explore my other passions of fishing, boating, cooking and outdoors.”At the start of the Australian summer the selectors wanted Hayden to continue to the Ashes, but his Test career was in severe danger when he was dropped from the limited-overs squads last Thursday. He went home to Brisbane after celebrating the victory at the SCG, where he squirmed over 31 and 39, and thought about his future before choosing to exit instead of being pushed out.”I wanted to step out of the bubble of international cricket,” he said. “There were a lot of moments where I was tossing and turning over what I wanted to do. My true intention was to look at the face of adversity again, and discuss with [his wife] Kel what I wanted to do with a new and invigorated game plan. Just giving myself that chance.”As his youngest boy Thomas interrupted to climb on his dad’s lap, Hayden, now 37, said the couple of days he spent with his wife and three children convinced him to go. “At one stage on Saturday I was picking a crazy bush of wild tomatoes and talking with Grace, as dad and daughter do,” he said. “I said: ‘Darling, I think I’ve had enough, I want to be here. ‘Oh, Daddy, one more Christmas.’ She loved the Boxing Day Test. I said: ‘No, darling, this is time.'”He was given a public farewell at Tuesday’s Twenty20 international at the Gabba, where he was driven around the ground on the back of a car during the innings break. The scoreboard said “Thanks Matt”, the crowd roared throughout the slow lap and Mark Boucher and Neil McKenzie joined in the waving goodbye.Hayden said his retirement was from all representative teams, but he will honour his Indian Premier League commitment with the Chennai Super Kings. “There’s absolutely zero fear,” Hayden said when asked about the rest of his life. “I’ve got zero regrets. I’ve tried to, rightly or wrongly, extract every ounce of whatever ability that I’ve been given and turn it into performance.”Asked if his original plan was to go on until after the Ashes he said: “If it was, I believe I would be going on that tour. This is the point where I want to step off.”Hayden had a difficult summer and managed only 149 runs at 16.55 from five Tests while hearing pleas for a significantly younger player to replace him. He was hindered by a heel injury in the off-season and never regained his spark, which was a shame considering his major contribution to the game in Australia over the past decade. The first of Hayden’s Tests came in South Africa in 1993-94, when he replaced the injured Mark Taylor, but it was not until 2000 that he was finally able to secure a regular spot in the national side. He went to India in 2001 and scored an Australian-record 549 runs in three matches and his place was not in danger until the 2005 Ashes tour. Ending that series with a century at The Oval, he produced four hundreds in consecutive games for the second occasion.”Maybe this is the seventh or eighth time I’ve been at the crossroads in my career, whether that be in one-day international or Test match cricket,” he said. “On reflection, I’ve made the correct decision for the boys moving forward.”He said the highlights were “the absolute highs of winning series” with Australia and combining with Ponting and Adam Gilchrist in the one-day team and Justin Langer in Tests. “They have been significant partnerships of life,” he said. “They’ve taught me the value of great character of strength and companionship.”No Australian opener has scored more Test runs than Hayden and he is behind only Ponting and Steve Waugh on the local hundreds’ list. The final time he reached three figures was against India in Adelaide 12 months ago. In the one-day arena there were 161 matches, 6133 runs, 10 hundreds and two World Cups.As Hayden made his announcement he was watched by the Australian Twenty20 squad, which lost him from its ranks last week, and at the end he shook their hands and hugged them. The former Queensland captain Jimmy Maher, Cricket Australia’s general manager of cricket Michael Brown and the rugby union international David Croft were also there along with Hayden’s parents, Laurie and Moya.”I’ve loved so much playing cricket,” he said. “I will never forget the experiences of 20 years as a professional cricketer. I’m looking forward to the next stage of my life.”He plans to work on finding indigenous cricketers for the national team – his former team-mate Jason Gillespie is the only recognised Test player with Aboriginal origins – and “wants to help Australian families reconnect with our great country by taking the time to get outside”. There will also be time spent with the McGrath Foundation and the Australian Cricketers’ Association, which is negotiating its next agreement with Cricket Australia.

Leicester predicted XI to face Man City

Leicester City will be hoping to make it three wins from a possible four in the Premier League when they welcome Manchester City to the King Power Stadium this afternoon.

A victory over Norwich City saw the Foxes bounce back from a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham United and give them confidence coming into this one.

Brendan Rodgers’ charges have received some huge selection boosts following the international break, with Jannik Vestergaard, Jonny Evans, Ricardo Pereira and Ryan Bertrand all making significant progress in their recoveries from injury and illness.

“Ryan Bertrand will be back and available. Jonny Evans and Jannik Vestergaard are progressing very well. We’ve had a good international break with players increasing their fitness levels,” Rodgers revealed in his press conference on Thursday.

“Hopefully, all those players should be fit and available. (Ricardo) trained today. He was out on the pitches yesterday and came through a session today and looked very good.”

On Evans and Vestergaard, the manager: “They’re not going to be 100 per cent. We only have three substitutes so there’s a strategy going into the game, so we have to be as sure as we possibly can in terms of how long the players can last. We’ll see where we’re at before we finalise the team.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects Leicester to line up at the King Power Stadium, with four changes from the side which started against Norwich last time out…

In goal, the virtually ever-present Kasper Schmeichel will keep his place between the sticks after making a solid start to the new season, and he could be called upon on several occasions when the current champions visit.

Ahead of the Denmark international, there is expected to be a rather unfamiliar-looking backline. Bertrand should replace 20-year-old Luke Thomas at left-back, while a string of errors for club and country could result in Vestergaard coming in for the £40.5m-rated Caglar Soyuncu.

Daniel Amartey and Timothy Castagne are likely to complete the defensive unit, with Rodgers set to bring Evans and Pereira back into the starting XI over the coming weeks as the latter gives way to the Belgian on this occasion.

The engine room will be made up of the usually dependable duo of Wilfried Ndidi and Youri Tielemans, who will provide a solid base for the more attack-minded James Maddison.

Completing the lineup will be Harvey Barnes, Jamie Vardy and Ademola Lookman. The RB Leipzig loanee should replace Marc Albrighton on the right wing, providing more pace on the counterattack for the Midlands outfit.

Pundit unsure about Bamford’s Leeds deal

Former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that Leeds United may have rushed their decision to hand Patrick Bamford a new contract.

The Lowdown: Bamford extends Leeds stay

The 27-year-old enjoyed a superb 2020/21 season for the Whites, scoring 17 goals in the top flight and helping them finish ninth in the table in their first campaign at that level since 2003/04.

Bamford has been rewarded for his excellence, with the striker signing a new five-year deal at Elland Road last Thursday.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Agbonlahor unconvinced

However, Agbonlahor isn’t convinced that Bamford has done enough to justify a new-and-improved contract is, telling Football Insider that the ex-Chelsea marksman needed to prove himself for longer.

The former Aston Villa striker said:

“I think it’s a bit of a rush to give him that deal, to be honest. He’s had one really good season but you want to see if he has second season syndrome himself or if he can do it again this season. You can decide on the contract maybe halfway through this season.

“Marcelo Bielsa might see stuff that we don’t see. Maybe they want to tie him up because other clubs are after him. If it was me, I’d probably wait and see how he does this season.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-13/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Key season for Whites star

Although Agbonlahor’s comments are a little harsh, there is an element of truth to what he’s saying, considering that Bamford – who ex-Leeds ace Brian Deane called a “confidence player” and “very intelligent” – has still only had one prolific season in the Premier League.

The 2021/22 campaign is a big one for the Leeds hero, with second season syndrome always potentially on the cards for strikers, due to opposition defenders sussing them out and gaining a greater understanding of their style of play.

Bamford needs to prove that his superb form last season was no flash in the pan, enjoying another relentless campaign in front of goal and backing up the club’s decision to give him a new long-term deal.

Everton predicted XI vs Southampton

Everton head into their opening Premier League clash on Saturday with problems aplenty.

The Toffees haven’t had the easiest of pre-season periods, being hammered 4-0 in their most recent clash against Manchester United, but now they have to make do with a number of absentees.

As Rafa Benitez’s men face Southampton at Goodison Park this weekend, they will be without more than five first-team players.

They have a handful of their squad self-isolating but fortunately Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are fit enough to play following their respective periods on international duty.

However, with their current squad in disarray, who will Benitez select in his first competitive game at the helm?

Here’s the XI we’re predicting today…

We anticipate the Spanish manager to make two changes to the side which was hammered by Manchester United last weekend.

The first change is up front, where Calvert-Lewin comes into the team ahead of the so-called “embarrassing” £100k-per-week Alex Iwobi, who played incredibly poorly against United.

The England striker’s return will be vital to Everton’s chances this weekend after he ended the 2020/21 campaign with 21 goals to his name.

Another change is just behind him, where James Rodriguez sits out. He is one of the players self-isolating but whether he plays for the club again remains to be seen – the Colombian has been linked with the exit door on a relentless basis this summer.

With Rodriguez missing, Richarlison comes back into the fray to partner Calvert-Lewin. The Brazilian wasn’t involved in pre-season as he was busy playing for Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics.

He played in a central role up front for his country, finishing on five goals for the tournament as they claimed the gold medal. With that in mind, it would be foolish of Benitez to consider Richarlison in any other position but centrally.

Consequently, Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend are handed roles on the wing, being presented with their competitive Everton debuts.

Gray signed in a £1.7m deal from Bayer Leverkusen, while Townsend was acquired on a free transfer following his release from Crystal Palace. Both of them will be keen to assert themselves quickly in Merseyside.

AND in other news, Everton must swoop for “exceptional” 19-goal beast who Rafa said is on “another level”…

Wolves transfer update on Musrati

Wolves are reportedly in a race with a number of different clubs in the Premier League to sign Al Musrati in the summer window.

The Lowdown: Neves out?

As per talkSPORT, Manchester United have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Ruben Neves, of whom the Midlands club are willing to sell for a fee in the region of £35m.

Should the Portugal international leave Molineux, then Bruno Lage’s team will need to find a replacement.

The Latest: Musrati eyed

A per O Jogo, the Wanderers are in a race with other teams in Europe, as well as in the English top flight, to sign Musrati.

It is ‘increasingly likely’ that he will be sold by Braga, who expect to let him go for around €15m (£12.9m), and has been touted as a potential replacement for Neves.

The Verdict: Keep Neves

While it may be difficult given the profile of sides reportedly interested in signing Neves, WWFC should be looking to keep him at all costs.

Musrati is not a bad player at all, having won 3.3 of his duels per game in Liga NOS in the 2020/21 season, as well as averaging 1.5 interceptions and tackles per match (Sofascore).

However, if Neves can be kept, then the Libya international would not be needed, as the Portugal starlet can offer the same combative presence in midfield but with more quality in possession too.

Waugh reads the signs

LONDON – Mark Waugh can see the signs and knows what they mean

Paul Mulvey02-Sep-2002LONDON – Mark Waugh can see the signs and knows what they mean.Make runs against Pakistan, or your international cricket career isover. And like his twin, Steve, who is at a similar crossroad, he has come toEngland for a lightning stint in county cricket to get his eye in andsome runs on the board in time for Australia’s relocated three-Testseries against Pakistan in Sri Lanka and Sharjah next month.Waugh, who has not played since Australia’s last Test against SouthAfrica in April, arrived in London today to play the last four games ofthe county season for Essex, while Steve is one match into his similarstint with Kent. The 37-year-old twins were dropped from the national one-day side lastseason and speculation mounted over their places in the Test team aftera lean summer each against New Zealand and South Africa. And Mark acknowledged the Pakistan series was his last chance to ensurehe stayed in the team for the home Ashes series against England.”I don’t feel under pressure but I know I’ve got to make runs in thePakistan series,” he said.”If I don’t make runs there, I don’t think I’ll be playing in the Ashes,so it’s up to me to perform now.”I’m not stupid, I know when the signs are there. But I think I’mbatting well enough to make runs.”Last season I was getting to 30 and 40 pretty easy and I was justgetting out. I’ve just got to convert those scores to some big scores.”While his Test career is in the balance, Waugh, one of the all-timegreat limited overs batsmen, has all but given up hope of a return toAustralia’s one-day team.”I’d like to play one-day cricket but realistically it’s a forlornchance, but you never know. If players get injured or lose form and I’mplaying well, they might look for experience,” he said.”They’ve not gone totally but I wouldn’t say my chances are great.”It is disappointing because I still think I’m good enough to play atthat level.”Cricket was not his primary reason for coming to England, with booksignings and promotions for his recently released biography his firstengagement.Essex, with whom he has spent four seasons in the 1980s and ’90s,coincidentally contacted him when he was due over here for businessanyway and he jumped at the chance. He hinted he could return to Essex to see out his career.”It depends on how long I play for Australia, if this season goes wellwith Australia then probably not, if it doesn’t then I might come back.”He plays his first game next week but will not get to play against Stevein either a championship or one-day match.

Celtic: Kristoffer Ajer ‘furious’ with the Hoops

Celtic may be closing in on a fresh campaign with a new manager at the helm but issues still plague the Hoops like a particularly nasty rash.

There was a sense of optimism when Ange Postecoglou was handed the keys to Parkhead but the same old issues still lie beneath the surface.

What’s the word?

Celtic play their opening Champions League qualifying match next week and they will do so with a lack of senior first-team players.

They may also face Midtjylland without the services of Kristoffer Ajer if he finally gets his wish of leaving.

Ajer was nothing but professional last season but he is reportedly finding life difficult at the moment after the Bhoys rejected bids from both Norwich and Bayer Leverkusen for his services.

It’s thought that Celtic are holding out for £20m but the centre-back hasn’t been left happy with the recent turn of events.

Taking to Twitter, the Cynic Wolf commented: “Understand from sources close to Kristoffer Ajer that he is absolutely furious with the way Celtic management has dealt with his situation the last two months.

“He feels there’s been broken promises, constantly moving goalposts and a lack of professionalism from club.”

Disaster on the cards

Peter Lawwell is no longer on the Celtic board but his mistakes of years gone by are still wreaking havoc with the club.

Clearly, he and his colleagues gave the Norwegian some assurances last term that with a year left on his current contract, he’d be given the freedom to leave this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Although they’re willing to let him go if their valuation is met, it’s a steep one for a Scottish based player with 12 months remaining on his deal.

This is the last thing that Postecoglou wanted to face when he was handed the job.

The Australian knew there’d be a rebuilding job to undertake but if anybody was going to kick up a fuss, it would be Odsonne Edouard.

After downing tools towards the end of 2020/21, the striker nearly joined Leicester until they turned their attentions elsewhere. Since then, the Frenchman’s camp has been rather quiet.

As for Ajer, there’s plenty of noise which is rather unhelpful as Celtic attempt to reclaim their dominance of Scottish football.

Supporters are never keen on seeing their best players leave the club but they should be particularly seething with this situation.

Once again, they’re staring at a situation at Paradise where the hierarchy have handled things incredibly poorly.

Those on the board have made countless mistakes in years gone by, with their hiring and backing of Neil Lennon a pivotal moment in their recent history.

Lennon was given the job despite Celtic claiming close to £10m in compensation fees for Brendan Rodgers. They then refused to sack the Northern Irishman despite poor form as the ex-Hoops manager decided to walk instead.

Just as the future looked a little brighter for the Glaswegian side, toxicity is surrounding the club once again.

Just one week out from their European qualification campaign, it does not bode well for a result.

AND in other news, Celtic submit bid for “fantastic” 5ft11 gem with “endless energy”, fans surely buzzing…

Porto move away from Alfredo Morelos chase

A major development has emerged regarding Porto’s pursuit of Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos.

What’s the talk?

According to Portuguese outlet Jornal de Noticias, as transcribed by Glasgow Live, Porto are moving away from their pursuit of the Colombian due to the Scottish champions’ valuation of the striker. The Gers are said to be demanding a fee of €15m (£12.8m) for their centre-forward and Porto are unable to afford that amount.

The report claims that the Liga NOS giants are now looking at Manchester City’s Lukas Nmecha as an alternative to the Gers hitman and could bid for the Germany under-21 international in the coming days, putting an end to their interest in Morelos.

Fans will love it

Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with this news as it means that the club are now unlikely to lose their first-choice striker this summer.

Never say never in football as the transfer window is still open for another two months and there is plenty of time left for the scenario to change, but Porto appear to have been put off by the £12.8m asking price and Ross Wilson is pulling off a masterstroke by being firm in the negotiations.

It is a win-win situation for Wilson and Rangers. Either Porto or another club stump up a club-record transfer fee to take Morelos away from Ibrox, or he stays in Scotland and continues to score goals to potentially help Steven Gerrard’s side win trophies next year.

In terms of a potential sale, Gers fans may be content with seeing him depart if the fee received was the biggest in the history of the club, which £12.8m would be, as it would give Gerrard plenty of money to go towards improving several areas of his squad.

Supporters would surely love to see him remain in Glasgow, though. His record in the Premiership is astonishing, with 54 goals and 21 assists in 109 appearances – more than one goal contribution every other game for Rangers domestically. Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, one Premiership defender hailed the Colombian international’s “excellent” ability to use his body in order to turn defenders and make chances for himself.

He told The Athletic: “When he goes to shield the ball it’s so difficult. His body strength and ball control are very good, so he makes it very difficult for you. He is deceptive with his physical attributes, but what I’d say he’s best at is when the ball is played up to him. He lets you think that you can nip in front of him and then his timing to put his body in and spin you is excellent.”

Therefore, if the £33,000-per-week beast is still a Rangers player come the end of the transfer window, it would be a major boost to Gerrard if no club is willing to meet his valuation. As long as Wilson remains firm in negotiations and does not waiver in his demands, the Gers chief is heading for a successful summer in terms of Morelos’ situation at the club.
