Newcastle linked with Arthur Cabral

Given Newcastle’s very poor start to the season, it’s safe to say that they could do with something to help them get their campaign on track and lift them out of the relegation zone.

However, it seems as though the new owners at the Tyneside club may have identified someone who could help to get the team out of their current predicament.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Goal in Brazil (via Sport Witness) that Newcastle have entered the race to sign FC Basel striker Arthur Cabral and are preparing an offer to be sent in the coming days.

Cabral originally joined Basel back in the 2019 summer transfer window on loan from Brazilian club Palmeiras before signing on a permanent basis a year later.

Overall, the 23-year-old – who is currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt – has netted an impressive 63 goals in 101 appearances across all competitions, with 25 of those coming this season in just 26 appearances, which is probably why Newcastle apparently have their eye on him.

Having described himself as a “fighting” player on the pitch, Cabral could be just what Newcastle need to keep them away from the relegation zone with his clear attacking talents in front of goal.

In addition to his goals, Cabral has averaged 4.1 shots and 1.3 key passes per game in the Swiss league so far this season, which is much higher than Callum Wilson’s average of 2.3 shots per game in the Premier League prior to their match against Burnley on Saturday.

Looking ahead to the January transfer window and the teams that Newcastle face in the league before the window opens, it should be the club’s main priority to sign Cabral in January to see if he can form a deadly strike partnership with the prolific Wilson and score enough goals between them to transform Howe’s side.

Also, given his fairly young age, he could well be a long-term replacement for Wilson further down the line, with the Englishman six years older than Cabral.

Jason Gallian has announced his retirement after losing his place in the Essex first team. It brings to an end a 19-year career split between Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Essex with a brief England spell in 1995.Gallian, 38, was born and raised in Sydney and played youth cricket for Australia before throwing his lot in with England when he signed for Lancashire. He moved to Nottinghamshire in 1998 where he had a spell as captain, but it wasn’t always a smooth time for him and he had a falling out with Kevin Pietersen. In 2008 he joined Essex where he recaptured some solid form and helped them win two trophies, but in 2009 has managed just five Championship matches with an average 13.33″I have spent 19 years playing professional cricket which I have thoroughly enjoyed and had a great experience and several challenges along the way,” he told the Essex website. “My last challenge has been at Essex, and the highlight in 2008 was being involved in the winning of two trophies.”However, all good things come to an end. Essex has a lot of young players coming through and it is their time now to perform. I am pleased to have finished my playing career at a club as good as Essex”.Paul Grayson, the Essex first eleven coach, said: “Jason has done well for us for the past two years. He played some really good one-day cricket in 2008. Unfortunately Jason has struggled for runs in the County Championship this season. He is good to have around the dressing room with his knowledge and experience of the game. All of us wish him well in the future.”Gallian scored 15,266 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 37.50 including a career best 312 for Lancashire against Derbyshire. He earned England selection in 1995 against West Indies, but broke his finger on debut at Edgbaston. He played another Test at the end of that series and one in South Africa but was a victim of the inconsistent selection policy of the era.Essex have also released offspinner James Middlebrook and quick bowler Jahid Ahmed.

Rangers: Gerrard must unleash Scott Arfield

Rangers will look to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership as they travel to face St Mirren on Sunday.

Heading into the weekend, the Gers sat at the summit of the table on 20 points, whilst tomorrow’s opponent’s were seventh and have only lost two of their opening nine matches.

Steven Gerrard’s team come into the game off the back of a 2-0 win over Danish side Brondby in the Europa League on Thursday night, so will he make any changes to the starting XI? We believe that one player he should bring into the fold is central midfielder Scott Arfield.

The experienced Scottish-born Canadian impressed during his cameo off the bench on Thursday, recording a SofaScore rating of 7.00 in 12 minutes. As per SofaScore, he won both of his duels, made one tackle and one interception, and provided one key pass as well as hitting the post with a good effort on goal.

It is time to forget about Steven Davis starting against St Mirren and Gerrard to unleash Arfield in midfield for the Gers. We published an article explaining why the 36-year-old should be axed from the starting XI after his disappointing performance against Brondby.

Arfield is a proven performer for Rangers and could come in to give the Northern Irishman a rest. Last season, the 32-year-old averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.85 in 28 games as he chipped in with four goals and five assists in the Premiership

During the campaign, Gerrard lauded the midfielder for what he offers in and out of position in the middle of the park, which hints at what he could bring to the side this weekend against St Mirren.

The Gers boss said: “Scott epitomises what we want. Out of possession he shows grit, he shows fight, he’s there for you and in possession, he’s always available. He stands up to be counted at important times, so we’re extremely happy with Scott at the moment.”

This highlights why Gerrard must unleash the £16k-per-week beast on Sunday to show what he can do with a first league start of the season. It would allow an underperforming Davis to have a rest and focus on getting back to his best in training, whilst also throwing a bone to Arfield to see if he can stake a claim for a regular starting berth for the Gers.

New South Wales lose Cowan, gain Watson

New South Wales have named a largely unchanged squad for 2009-10 with the departure of the opener Ed Cowan and the addition of the allrounder Shane Watson the only major alterations. Cowan has moved to Tasmania to increase his opportunities while Watson has relocated from Queensland. The left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who made his Sheffield Shield debut late last season, has ousted his fellow fast man Scott Coyte from the state squad. The other new faces are the batting allrounder Phillip Wells and the left-arm orthodox spinner Luke Doran, who have both been handed rookie deals.Josh Hazlewood, the promising fast bowler, will be available more often having now finished his schooling and moved to Sydney from the Tamworth region. With ten New South Wales players receiving Cricket Australia contracts for the next year, the Blues were able to name a group with impressive depth as they aim for quick improvement having finished last in the Sheffield Shield last summer.”There is no doubt that this season will again offer enormous opportunity to the younger players,” the Cricket New South Wales chief executive David Gilbert said. “I am sure that they will build on their experience from last season and help us challenge in all three domestic competitions.”New South Wales squad Aaron Bird, Doug Bollinger (Cricket Australia contract), Nathan Bracken (CA), Mark Cameron, Beau Casson, Stuart Clark (CA), Michael Clarke (CA), Burt Cockley, Peter Forrest, Brad Haddin (CA), Nathan Hauritz (CA), Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Phillip Hughes (CA), Phil Jaques, Simon Katich (CA), Usman Khawaja, Grant Lambert, Brett Lee (CA), Greg Mail, Peter Nevill, Stephen O’Keefe, Ben Rohrer, Daniel Smith, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Dominic Thornely, David Warner, Shane Watson (CA).Rookies Daniel Burns, James Crosthwaite, Luke Doran, Scott Henry, Simon Keen, Joshua Lalor, Phillip Wells.

Aston Villa: Guilbert impressing on loan

Having joined Aston Villa in what was a £4.5m deal back in January of 2019, the Villa Park faithful may well have thought that Dean Smith had landed a player who would become the 50-year-old’s first-choice right-back for many a season to come.

This idea would have more than likely been reinforced in the club’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign, with the £5.4m-rated man going on to make 25 appearances in the top flight, over which the defender helped his side keep two clean sheets, registered two assists and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.6 key passes, two interceptions, three tackles and winning 6.6 duels per game.

These returns saw the former France U21 international earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.77, ranking him as Villa’s joint ninth-best performer in the league.

However, after the club’s £14.18m capture of Nottingham Forest right-back Matty Cash in the summer of 2020, Guilbert’s spot in the Villa starting XI appeared to be in considerable threat. That was something that ultimately proved to be the case when Smith failed to award the 26-year-old a single Premier League appearance in 2020/21, before sending the defender on loan to RC Strasbourg in the January transfer window.

Despite impressing over his 13 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring one goal, registering four assists and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.16, Smith once again took the decision to loan the right-back out this summer, with Strasbourg being more than happy to welcome the defender back to Stade de la Meinau for the 2021/22 campaign.

And, so far this season, Guilbert has continued to impress over his six Ligue 1 appearances for Julien Stephan’s side, having already helped his side keep one clean sheet, provided one assist and created two big chances, in addition to making an average of 1.2 key passes, two interceptions, 2.2 tackles and winning five duels per fixture.

These metrics have seen the £40k-per-week defender average a SofaScore match rating of 7.13, ranking him as the French side’s second-best performer in the league.

As such, while Cash is undeniably a fantastic right-back, considering the fact that the 24-year-old is Smith’s only senior option in the position, coupled with Guilbert’s impressive performances while out on loan, the 50-year-old’s decision to bomb the Frenchman out of his squad appears to be a rather strange one.

Indeed, Guilbert is undoubtedly a player who possesses the ability to push Cash for his starting spot in the Villa XI, something that would help to maintain the £19.8m-rated man’s current level of performance, while, should he pick up a serious injury, or even simply suffer a dip in form, Smith’s call regarding Guilbert could prove to be a rather big mistake on the part of the Villa manager.

M Vijay and Sreesanth boost South

Match facts

February 5-9, 2009

M Vijay returns to the South Zone team after missing the first two games due to injury. © Getty Images

The Big Picture

The Duleep Trophy semi-finals ended in comprehensive wins for both finalists, but West Zone have more reasons for concern ahead of the big clash. None of their batsmen managed to score a century against East Zone – despite their prolific run in the Ranji Trophy – and some lacklustre fielding ended up delaying their semi-final victory. Wasim Jaffer, the West captain, admitted his side was poor in the field; he dropped two easy chances at slip himself. Parthiv Patel was the worst offender, putting down three catches behind the wickets and missing an easy stumping.South Zone boast a better team on paper, even in the absence of VVS Laxman, and their top order is in excellent form, with S Badrinath, Rahul Dravid and Robin Uthappa scoring centuries in their team’s demolition of North Zone. Dinesh Karthik was among the runs in the previous game against Central Zone, scoring a hundred in each innings . The pitch at the Chidambaram Stadium is likely to be batsman-friendly as always.

Teams

South are without L Balaji – who has replaced an injured Munaf Patel in Sri Lanka – but will be buoyed by the return of Sreesanth and opener Murali Vijay, who needs a big score to make it to the Indian Test squad for New Zealand. Goa medium-pacer Robin D’Souza takes Balaji’s place but is unlikely to play.South (probable): 1 Abhinav Mukund, 2 Murali Vijay, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Rahul Dravid, 5 S Badrinath (captain), 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 R Ashwin, 8 M Suresh, 9 Shadab Jakati, 10 Sreesanth, 11 R Vinay Kumar.Considering batting is the key, West are likely to revert to the five-bowler strategy, including two spinners this time after playing an extra seamer in the semi-final. Ramesh Powar, who was dropped against East, is likely to replace left-arm fast man Samad Fallah, who was erratic in the previous game.West (probable): 1 Wasim Jaffer (capt), 2 Bhavik Thaker, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Cheteshwar Pujara, 5 Parthiv Patel, 6 Abhishek Nayar, 7 Kedar Jadhav, 8 Ramesh Powar, 9 Dhawal Kulkarni, 10 Rajesh Pawar, 11 Siddarth Trivedi.

Quotes

“There are a few players – Jaffer, Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Dhawal Kulkarni – who want to move to the next level which will only help us to match the opposition.”

“Obviously, we will miss Balaji, but we are planning to go in with five bowlers and if our batting fires, then we would be in a strong position. The pitch looks dry and is likely to take turn as the match progresses.”

West Ham handed injury boost

West Ham have been handed a timely injury boost ahead of the Premier League’s return next weekend…

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic, Irons defender Arthur Masuaku is expected to be available for selection after the international break, having been absent since March with a knee problem.

The 27-year-old left-back has yet to be named in any of David Moyes’ three matchday squads but he has been keeping up his fitness levels by playing for the U23s squad in the Premier League 2.

Masuaku featured for the full 90 minutes in their wins over Arsenal and Chelsea and during their defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion. An encouraging sign.

It was also claimed in the report that there were no plans to farm the DR Congo international out on loan or sell him on, so that only goes to show what the Hammers’ boss thinks of him.

Timely boost

Masuaku is certainly not the first choice in the current squad, with Aaron Cresswell taking that crown, but having him fit and available is certainly a big boost to Moyes.

If the Englishman were to get injured, then the 5 foot 10 dynamo is his only senior back-up, whilst at times last season, the pair of them played together when the 58-year-old wanted to deploy a back-three.

He started ten of their opening 11 matches in 2020/21 and that was largely with Cresswell making up the backline as a left-sided centre-half.

His return allows Moyes to be flexible in his tactics, something that he may not be able to do without Masuaku at his disposal, given his lack of options in the role.

Despite a lack of game time last season, Masuaku still managed to top the charts for dribbles per game (2.4), which was more than Cresswell (0.1) and even the likes of Michail Antonio (1.7), Said Benrahma (1.4), and Jesse Lingard (1.1), per WhoScored.

This suggests that he’s very much one of Moyes’ more attacking defensive options and could be one reason why he likes to deploy him alongside Cresswell at times.

The 27-year-old isn’t bad defensively either, having averaged 1.7 tackles per game (joint-third most).

Valued at £6.3m and on wages of around £40k-per-week, Masuaku’s presence on the pitch will certainly be needed, especially when the games come thick and fast with the Hammers in the Europa League this season.

After returning against Southampton next Saturday, the Irons will head to Croatia to face Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday, before returning to England to host Jesse Lingard’s Manchester United in back-to-back matches.

Cresswell won’t be able to play them all, so his availability should come as a timely and big boost.

AND in other news, West Ham dealt hammer blow as huge Rush Green development emerges, fans will be fuming…

Southampton linked with Jack Hendry

Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Jack Hendry from KV Oostende this summer but in reality, Ralph Hasenhuttl doesn’t need him in his squad at St Mary’s.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton have joined Newcastle United, Burnley and West Brom in showing an interest in the Scotland international, who only joined Oostende on a permanent deal earlier this summer.

However, the report suggests that the Belgian side would be open to the idea of selling the 26-year-old and making an immediate profit, after paying just £1.8m to sign him from Celtic after a successful loan spell.

Do Southampton need him?

Hasenhuttl suggested recently that if Southampton are to sign another player before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday evening, then it will most likely be a defensive-midfielder who can play ‘as a six’ and compete with Oriol Romeu and Ibrahima Diallo.

The Saints have already brought in Lyanco as Jannik Vestergaard’s replacement and considering they also have Jack Stephens, Mohammed Salisu and Jan Bednarek competing for a starting spot at centre-back, it would be strange to see them bring in another player in that position.

Hendry was named as the Player of the Year in the Belgian Pro League last season, so is clearly a talented player but it is difficult to see where he fits into Hasenhuttl’s squad without displacing players with Premier League experience.

The former Celtic man, who is currently valued at £3.15m by Transfermarkt, is already 26 and therefore you feel that he doesn’t have too much room to improve his game, and his signing could block the development of players such as Salisu and summer signing Dynel Simeu.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, if there is any truth in this particular transfer rumour then Southampton fans should hope that Martin Semmens doesn’t look to sign him, as you feel their money could be spent better on an area of the squad with less quality in depth.

And, in other news… Bye-bye Obafemi: Southampton should seal late swoop for “shining light”
