Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper Rip Rays Pitcher After Benches-Clearing Incident

Philadelphia Phillies stars Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper ripped Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Edwin Uceta after a benches-clearing incident in the bottom of the eighth inning of Philadelphia's 9-4 win at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday.

Uceta entered the game with one out and two runners on, then proceeded to surrender a two-run double, RBI single and two-run home run before allowing a double to Harper. On the first pitch of the ensuing at-bat, Uceta plunked Castellanos in the back with a 96-MPH sinker.

Castellanos threw his hands up in frustration and yelled out towards Uceta. Harper approached the Rays reliever from second in an effort to confront him before he was waylaid by two Rays. The benches then cleared.

After the game, Castellanos told reporters he could tell that he was about to get hit, judging by Uceta's increasing frustrations on the mound.

"I can't explain it," Castellanos said. "I know that he had pretty good numbers going into that. Just watching him I could see him getting frustrated and digging in I'm like, 'I'm gonna take this pitch here and see if he's around the plate.' "

"And it wasn't anywhere near me."

Castellanos said the Phillies "all got a sense" that Uceta was frustrated because his "ERA shot through the roof."

Uceta entered play with a 0.75 ERA but the mark ballooned to 1.49 after he was charged with three earned runs.

Castellanos then compared Uceta's behavior to that of his two-year-old son.

"You're throwing a baseball over 90 miles an hour and you're frustrated and you're gonna throw at somebody," Castellanos said. "It's like my 2-year-old throwing a fit because I take away his dessert before he's finished."

Harper told reporters that Uceta's actions don't line up with "the game that we play."

"He hit him on purpose," Harper said. "It's not the game that we play. It shouldn't be. Guys throw too hard nowadays. You're getting mad because a guy hits a homer off of you or you blow the lead, walk the guy and come out of the game. What are you going to do? it's just the situation."

"The whole thing just really fired me up, really upset me. Just not something you should accept as Major League Baseball."

The Phillies and Rays play the final game of the three-game series on Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. ET.

£150k-per-week Arsenal star looks like the player Pepe was supposed to be

Before this summer, Mikel Arteta’s track record of bringing new forward players to Arsenal was pretty non-existent.

While the Spaniard has enjoyed spending the Kroenke’s money on bolstering the defence, very rarely have we seen the attacking ranks improved.

Indeed, up to 2025, the only out-and-out attackers Arteta had brought to the Emirates Stadium were Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard and Willian.

Even Havertz was initially listed as a midfielder when he first moved to north London.

Signed for £65m, the German is still the most expensive addition to the forward line since a certain Nicolas Pepe, a player who did not exactly thrive under Unai Emery or Arteta.

His story in the capital is a sad one, although he is now finding form at Villarreal in Spain.

The story of Nicolas Pepe's abject Arsenal career

In August 2019, Emery and and Co went big to seal the acquisition of Pepe from Lille in a deal worth £72m.

It was a landmark move, one that broke the club’s transfer record at the time. While it was a jaw-dropping sum of money, splashing out on Pepe did not necessarily look like an awful decision at the time.

Indeed, the Ivorian had scored 22 goals and supplied 11 assists in 38 Ligue 1 matches the previous campaign. He was undeniably one of the most exciting wingers in European football.

Unfortunately, it didn’t exactly go according to plan for the left-footed star who struggled with wild bouts of inconsistency during his time in England.

That said, if we solely look at the numbers, he didn’t have a truly terrible time at the Emirates. He registered an average of 16 goal involvements per season, producing eight goals and ten assists during his first campaign. He then scored 16 times during his second year at the club. That’s a brilliant tally, more goals than any Arsenal player scored in 2024/25 for context.

Based on that, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Pepe did well. Ultimately, however, he wasn’t worth the £72m paid.

Eventually leaving on a free transfer after playing just 681 league minutes in 2021/22, Arsenal reporter Charles Watts described the move as a “horrendous mistake”. An internal investigation was led into the signing, while the player himself declared that he contemplated retiring as a result of his time in London.

To make matters worse, Emery later declared that he didn’t even really want Pepe either. The man the Spaniard wanted was Wilfried Zaha.

Indeed, the now Aston Villa boss once stated: “Pepe is a good player but he needs time. When I was there he didn’t give me the performances. I was in favour of someone coming who knew the English league, more than anything so that he wouldn’t need a period of adaptation. I had a meeting with Zaha. He was the player I wanted because I could see that he won so many games on his own.”

Now in Spain and aged 30, he is enjoying his time with Villarreal immensely. He was named LaLiga’s Player of the Month for August, having scored two goals and registered an assist in his opening three games for the club.

Pepe may have been an expensive flop for the Gunners but six years on from his acquisition, Arsenal may well have signed a player who is everything that the Ivory Coast international promised to be.

Arsenal star is shades of Nicolas Pepe, but in a good way

Pepe had plenty of endearing traits. Standing at 6 foot, he had a rangy dribbling and running style.

His play style was packed with little body feints; he would roll the ball with one foot and then explode the other way in the blink of an eye. He was direct and difficult to deal with in and around the penalty area.

Left-footed as well, he was your classic inside forward from the right flank. As we all know, it didn’t really happen for him.

Well, in 2025, it looks as though Arsenal have found another Pepe, just with all the bad bits left out.

Hear us out, but that player is Noni Madueke, the club’s £55m arrival from Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

When Madueke first arrived at the club, certain but limited sections of the fanbase protested against his signing.

Seemingly fed up of signing players from Chelsea, the campaign read ‘No to Madueke’. Well, Arsenal said yes to Madueke and he’s been a captivating signing so far.

Like Pepe, he is left-footed and they both have a very similar dribbling style. We certainly saw that against Nottingham Forest on Saturday when Madueke terrorised Morato and Neco Williams at full-back.

The £150k-per-week England international completed a whopping five dribbles on the afternoon and his ability to trap the ball and then immediately run at players evoked memories of the best of Pepe.

He was remarkably direct, twisting the Forest full-backs this way and that. Hailed for his “electric” performance by Gunners writer, Adam Keys, it’s been a mighty fine start to life in the famous red and white for the 23-year-old.

The winger may not have found the net or assisted a goal yet, but the quality is clear. He is ready to explode in a way Pepe never managed to do.

Madueke was Arsenal’s most threatening player against Liverpool in the 1-0 defeat at Anfield and despite not registering a goal contribution on Saturday, once again looked like their most menacing player.

Perhaps, after all of these years, Arsenal are going to get the player Pepe promised to be, just for nearly £20m cheaper.

Arsenal star looks like their best bargain since the days of Henry & Vieira

Very rarely does a player feel like a bargain but Andrea Berta has struck gold on this one.

Arsenal icon claims Arne Slot 'lucky' to inherit title-winning Liverpool squad compared to Mikel Arteta who is building success in north London

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell believes that Arne Slot is 'lucky' to have inherited this title-winning Liverpool squad. Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp as Reds boss last year and won the Premier League title in his debut season at Anfield. By comparison, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has had to build his squad as the north London side look to pip the Reds to first this season.

Getty Images SportSlot turned Klopp's Liverpool squad into champions

Slot succeeded Klopp at the Liverpool helm last summer after the German's nine-year stint on Merseyside drew to a close. Klopp won his only Premier League title in the 2019/20 'Covid' season, and the Dutchman matched his predecessor's triumph in his first year at Anfield.

Liverpool made few changes to the Liverpool squad last year, with Federico Chiesa the only senior arrival in Slot's first summer at the club. However, as Klopp's Liverpool finished third in his final season in charge, Slot pipped both Manchester City and Arsenal to top spot in 2024/25.

The Reds have spent big this summer as they look to successfully defend their Premier League crown, bringing in the likes of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. Campbell, though, is more impressed with Arteta's Arsenal rebuild as the Gunners seek to secure a first domestic title in over 20 years.

Advertisement'He hasn’t changed much. He’s lucky.'

The ex-Arsenal centre-back believes that Slot is 'lucky' to have inherited the squad the Klopp assembled, and has hinted he is more impressed by Arteta's rebuild, saying: "I think slow is good sometimes. Some people are lucky. Arne Slot inherited a fantastic side and won the league. He hasn’t changed much. He’s lucky. A new manager, good bounce, players responded. Arteta had to get rid of some players, the deadwood.

"The last couple of years, he’s had pretty much the team. The centrepiece is the centre forward. Finally, they’ve got someone [Viktor Gyokeres, who joined from Sporting over the summer], but they’ve got to find out how to play him. But you have to build it.

"[William] Saliba wouldn’t have signed the contract [until 2030] as well if he didn’t believe Arsenal can win. They just have to win. This year they’ve got to win by hook or by crook – but you have work to get a lucky break."

Getty Images Sport'The belief is there They know they can do it'

Arsenal went into the international break top of the Premier League following their 2-0 win over West Ham and Liverpool's late 2-1 loss at Chelsea last weekend. Estevao's second half injury time strike condemned the Reds to a third successive competitive defeat for the first time since 2023.

However, Campbell believes that the understanding in the Arsenal defence will be key as the Gunners look to top the Premier League pile next May, reserving praise for Jurrien Timber in the process.

On Timber, Campbell said: "I think Jurrien Timber is probably one of the best right backs in Europe at the moment. He’s incredible, can score goals, good in one-on-one scenarios. He’s definitely lost a little bit of time from his injury but he’s a top, top player."

And on Arsenal's defence, he added: "I think it comes down to the back five. They know what they’re doing now. They’re young, but it’s the maturity of their play now. The belief is there. They know they can do it."

Arsenal have a favourable run coming up

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League table after seven games having collected 16 points so far. Victory over West Ham means they went into the international break ahead of Liverpool by a point after Slot's side fell to back-to-back late league losses.

And the Gunners have a favourable run of games following the domestic hiatus as they take on Fulham, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Sunderland before the November internationals. Arteta's men are also up against Atletico Madrid and Slavia Prague in the Champions League and Brighton in the EFL Cup over the coming weeks as the north London side seek to secure major silverware this season.

To some, Arsenal are now favourites to win the Premier League and Champions League having invested heavily over the summer, landing the likes of Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze, among others.

Four England stars Thomas Tuchel could rescue after Southgate struggles

Jordan Henderson’s call-up should have been a fairly quick indication that Thomas Tuchel is ready to hand out second chances in the England set-up before the World Cup. The former Chelsea boss is leading a new era and one which has already featured plenty of old faces as well as some fresh arrivals.

The latest to benefit from that is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Prior to the arrival of Tuchel, the midfield star hadn’t been called up for England duty since 2018. That was as many as seven years ago now, but he’s seemingly done enough at AC Milan to earn another chance to impress for the Three Lions and make a claim for a World Cup place.

It feels unlikely that he’ll be the final shock inclusion under Tuchel, who has left England fans guessing at every turn. But who could be next to receive a much-welcomed return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup?

4 Fikayo Tomori AC Milan

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

Fikayo Tomori was always one that was overlooked by Gareth Southgate and mainly for reasons unknown. He played for one of Europe’s most historic clubs and, last season aside, started almost every week for AC Milan. Yet, it still wasn’t enough for Southgate, who chose to keep his selection in the Premier League for the most part.

Things are changing under Tuchel, however, and Tomori could be the next former Chelsea star back in the squad after Loftus-Cheek. The central defender’s last call-up came in 2019, but after earning his way back into Milan’s starting side, he deserves to get his place back in the Three Lions set-up at long last.

Tuchel has already shown willingness to call players outside the Premier League with the inclusion of AC Milan’s Loftus-Cheek alongside Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford, and should now turn towards Tomori.

3 Jack Grealish Everton

It almost seems inevitable that Jack Grealish will get his England chance before the World Cup. The winger has so far been reborn under David Moyes at Everton – assisting four goals in just two games – and provides a different threat to the quicker, more direct wingers who already have a place under Tuchel.

Grealish was beginning to fall out of love with football at Manchester City. He was refined to a cameo role more often than not, if that, and desperately needed the move that Everton soon granted him.

With the World Cup around nine months away, the Toffees have so far unlocked the version of Grealish that the Premier League last saw at Aston Villa. He is the star of the show at the Hill Dickinson and is well on course to earn back the England place that he lost in 2023.

2 Jadon Sancho Aston Villa

It goes without saying that Jadon Sancho still has a long way to go. He struggled on loan at Chelsea last season, so much so that they paid to get out of their obligation to buy the winger from Manchester United, and has shown all the signs of a player lacking the desire that he once had. But a lot can change in football.

It wasn’t so long ago that Sancho was the talk of European football, and he wasn’t the first player to struggle in a Manchester United shirt after a big-money move. A loan spell back to Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 campaign proved that he is still a player full of talent, but that talent must be on show at Aston Villa.

Rashford rediscovered his best form under Unai Emery in a similar move last season. Now, he has his England place back and is a Barcelona player. Sancho must use that example and get back to the type of form that would hand the Three Lions a major boost next summer.

1 Phil Foden Man City

Recent injuries haven’t helped, but there’s no denying that Phil Foden is very much on the peripheral of Pep Guardiola’s current plans. The 25-year-old hasn’t started any of Manchester City’s opening three games and is in danger of taking up the role that Grealish just vacated at the Etihad.

From becoming the Premier League’s Player of the Year in 23/24, the midfielder has now lost his England place and faces a fight to win it back before the World Cup gets underway.

It would be Tuchel’s biggest call to leave Foden out of his side. The Man City man is one of the most talented players that the Three Lions have, but things need to change at the Etihad. His first task is to get back into Guardiola’s Man City side, who have lost two of their three opening games, and then prove why he should be starting every week.

When that comes, then he should naturally find a way back into Tuchel’s plans. For now, however, the England boss has simply thrown down the challenge for Foden to get back to his best.

Deol 70*, Meghna three-for lift Giants to No. 2

Gujarat Giants’ batting might trumped an all-international Delhi Capitals bowling attack and made up for their own sloppy fielding to clinch a thriller and take a step closer to their maiden playoffs berth. In a stiff chase of 178, Beth Mooney, Harleen Deol and Deandra Dottin came together to pull off a stunning effort by ransacking 103 runs in the last 10 overs that helped them to a five-wicket win with three balls to spare.By taking down the table-toppers who are already in the playoffs, Giants overtook Mumbai Indians to go second on the points table with a better NRR, although MI still have two games in hand compared to Giants’ one. Giants’ win also meant it was the end of the road for UP Warriorz, who can’t make it to the playoffs anymore. Giants and MI will now face-off in a crucial penultimate league game on March 10 in Mumbai. The Giants chase was set up by a steady 44 from Mooney, a wonderfully-paced and unbeaten 70 off 49 from Deol and a power-packed 24 off 10 from Dottin before Kashvee Gautam stole the show when they needed 13 from seven. The combined effort put in vain a classy 92 from 57 from Meg Lanning that was studded with 15 fours after she was gifted two lives by Giants.

Mooney and Deol lay the base

Giants are not known for their power-hitters at the top of the order and they didn’t change their template even in a steep chase. They were 15 for 1 after four overs as Mooney and Deol aimed to stay steady after the early loss of D Hemalatha, whose wretched run of form continued.Mooney went over the infield consistently to collect boundaries and it was the fifth over that kicked things off for Giants. Deol got going with two fours in a 13-run over and repeated the feat in the next over when she used the pace of Annabel Sutherland to push the run rate past six as the powerplay ended.Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol were top scorers for Gujarat Giants•BCCI

With the asking rate at an exact ten, Giants had a mountain to climb. Mooney made Deol run hard between the wickets and when the duo collected four fours in the space of seven balls just before the halfway mark, the chase was truly alive.Capitals had their forgettable moment of fielding too when Deol, on 27, lofted Jess Jonassen down the ground and Shafali went to her right from long-off but the ball burst through her hands and let go of a chance that potentially cost them the match.

The big hits from the big names

Giants were handed a big blow when Mooney found Sutherland at long-off off Minnu Mani in the 12th over, but that meant Capitals had to try and constrain Giants’ big hitters now. And they couldn’t. Gardner got off the mark with a four before smashing a glorious straight six off Marizanne Kapp that brought the equation down to 73 off 43 which soon became 66 off 36.Deol then got a second life, on 45, when Sutherland failed to hold on to a return catch. Gardner unleashed another six, this time off a Sutherland slower ball over midwicket. Deol brought up her first WPL fifty since 2023, off 38 balls, with a boundary to point; and even though Gardner holed out for 22, Dottin and Deol smashed back-to-back sixes to make it 36 off 23. The Capitals quicks took pace off the ball, brought Jonassen back but nothing helped. Dottin smoked Jonassen for 4, 6 and 4 to different parts of the leg-side boundary that shrunk the equation to 16 off 14.Capitals thought they had a chance when Jonassen finished the over with the wickets of Dottin and Phoebe Litchfield, before Shikha Pandey gave away just two off five balls of the 19th over, but Gautam dispatched a length ball over wide long-on. Deol followed it with a four before Gautam hit the winning runs.

Another Lanning and Shafali half-century stand

Lanning and Shafali were living dangerously right from the start. If Lanning’s first scoring stroke was a thick edge off an outswinger for four in the first over, Shafali’s straight loft in the next over just beat a sprinting mid-on to fetch her a boundary too. Lanning took off after that, and even though Shafali didn’t, they brought up their 12th half-century stand in the WPL, easily the most by any pair and for any wicket.Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning added 83 off 54 balls•BCCI

Lanning continued to pepper the boundaries on either side off the front foot as Giants continued to pitch the ball up. Shafali got a life on 15 when Tanuja Kanwar couldn’t hold on to a return catch in the sixth over despite a full-length dive. She looked a lot more confident with two sixes after the powerplay but holed out for 40 off 37 to deep midwicket where Phoebe Litchfield completed a well-judged catch.

Another Lanning masterclass

Lanning, meanwhile, struck seven fours in the powerplay and continued to punish Giants for their lapses. There was action at the other end too – Shafali’s wicket was followed by Jonassen’s when she missed a swinging yorker from Dottin, soon after the batter had survived a stumping chance.Just before that, Giants had also given Lanning a life when Deol almost clung to a juggling attempt after a perfectly-timed leap at mid-off at the start of the 12th over. Deol leapt straight up to intercept the ball with her right hand, attempted a left-handed grab and then even caught the ball with both hands while rotating but the ball popped out when she landed on her elbows. And as the cliché goes, Lanning rubbed salt on the wounds with a glorious inside-out six over the covers for her 34-ball fifty.Giants’ sloppiness wasn’t done for the day though. Soon after Jemimah Rodrigues fell for 4, Lanning could have been run-out on 63 when a mix-up with Sutherland meant Lanning was terribly late on reaching the bowler’s end. But a wayward throw combined with Priya Mishra’s failed attempt to collect the ball extended Lanning’s stay. She next punished Kanwar for two fours in the 18th over and Dottin for another pair of boundaries in the last over. Lanning was on 92 with two balls left in the innings but missed out on becoming the WPL’s first ever centurion as she was bowled by a Dottin legcutter. Sarah Bryce carved the last ball for a six that gave Capitals a total that was strong but not enough.

'That's part of the challenge!' – Roy Keane blasts Pep Guardiola over familiar complaints just one month into the new season

After throwing away victory against Arsenal left Manchester City ninth in the Premier League table with seven points from five games, Pep Guardiola defended his team's poor early season form. But the Spaniard's claims that his players are already "incredibly tired" did not sit well with ex-Manchester United captain Roy Keane.

  • Guardiola blames fatigue for dropped points

Gabriel Martinelli's stoppage time equaliser for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium saw three points become one for Manchester City, extending a run that has seen the eight-time Premier League champions since 2011 alone take only four points from the last 12 on offer. Guardiola immediately reasoned that, after the Thursday scheduling of a Champions League clash with Napoli, fatigue and injuries are already taking hold of his squad.

"We were incredibly tired," he said. "The game against Napoli was so emotional and after that recovery day we have four or five hours to travel to London. Arsenal fought in the last two Premier League title races and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League so it's so difficult. We had a lot of fatigue with many players. We also have a lot of injuries."

  • AFP

Are Man City's 'tired' complaints justified?

The trip to north London was only City's sixth game of the season. And while it's worth remembering that they were in action at the FIFA Club World Cup up until the end of June, Chelsea went further in the same competition and haven't had the same issues so far in 2025-26. Four players missed out against Arsenal because of injury, the same number that were absent from the Gunners squad. The Arsenal game saw City unusually record just 32.8% possession, the lowest of any Guardiola team in a top flight match – he'd led teams into 600 others before Sunday's clash. That lack of the ball arguably invited pressure, eventually leading to the late equaliser.

  • Keane pokes holes in Guardiola's defence

In his role as a pundit for , Roy Keane didn't accept Guardiola's argument.

"Pep Guardiola is on about the fatigue and the challenge to win league titles, but that is part of the challenge," the seven-time Premier League winner commented. "Im suprisied Pep [is talking about fatigue] is talking about fatigue and schedules in September, and after two home matches. They were fairly comfortable against Manchester United and Napoli had a man sent off after 20 minutes, and it's not like they have travelled from Russia or Poland after a tough away game. I didn't like that angle Pep was coming from."

Four games in 12 days to come

City are quickly back in action in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night, travelling into Yorkshire to face Huddersfield Town. The likelihood is that will see Guardiola heavily rotate his team, as it marks the start of a run of four games across three competitions, spanning only 12 days until the October international break. After Huddersfield, City are up against Burnley and Brentford in the Premeir League, either side of a Champions League trip to Monaco. They should be favourites to win all four games, regardless of scheduling.

Vlaeminck dislocates shoulder on T20 World Cup return

Fielding mishap moments into match deepens long run of injuries for Australia quick

Tayla Vlaeminck dislocated her bowling shoulder just moments into Australia’s T20 World Cup match against Pakistan, deepening her shocking run of bad luck with injuries.Vlaeminck was attempting to stop a boundary off Muneeba Ali’s fine edge on just the fourth ball of the match in Dubai on Friday. Running back from short third, Vlaeminck slid but her knee got stuck in the turf as she reached for the ball and flicked it back before tumbling over the rope, crying out and clutching at her shoulder as she did so.Lying on the boundary’s edge clearly in distress as Australia team medical staff rushed to her aid, captain Alyssa Healy looked visibly concerned.Vlaeminck’s shoulder was later relocated and the extent of the injury will be known following further assessment in the coming days. She had come into the side for the big-hitting Grace Harris, adding pace in what Healy described as an “impact for impact” swap in Australia’s first match of the tournament at the ground, having opened their campaign with wins against Sri Lanka and New Zealand on a slower pitch in Sharjah. It is the latest in a long line of injuries for 25-year-old Vlaeminck, playing her first World Cup match since 2018, Australia’s group game against India, and only the second of her career.Vlaeminck dislocated her left shoulder playing for Victoria in the 2017-18 season. Then, during the Australia A tour of England which coincided with last year’s Women’s Ashes, she dislocated the same shoulder again while bowling, which led to corrective surgery. Before she made her debut for Australia, in 2018, she had undergone two ACL reconstructions. Stress fractures in her foot also forced her to miss the 2020 home T20 World Cup as well as the 2022 ODI World Cup, the Commonwealth Games later that year and the 2023 T20 World Cup. Her foot injuries led her to spend time training with professional dancers at the Australian Ballet as part of her rehab work.

Bad news for Trusty: Celtic considering bid to sign "dominant" £3m colossus

Celtic recently made another addition to their squad with the signing of versatile central defender Hayato Inamura from Japanese side Albirex Niigata.

The 23-year-old star, who can play as either a centre-back or as a left-back, has joined the Scottish giants on a four year deal ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Celtic supporters should not be expecting him to play week-in-week-out in the Scottish Premiership next season, though, as it has been revealed that the defender is a signing for the future.

When asked if he would be part of the first-team squad, Brendan Rodgers said: “No, he won’t be. He’s a part of the investment of the club.”

The head coach added that the Hoops will “see where he’s at as a young player and then it’s whether he stays with the squad or whether he has to go out on loan” during pre-season.

This means that fellow left-footed central defender Auston Trusty may be safe for now, after he endured a difficult first season at Parkhead last term.

Why Auston Trusty is in a difficult position at Celtic

Despite the fact that left-footed defender Liam Scales earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, Celtic decided to pay a reported fee of £5m to sign left-sided centre-back Trusty from Sheffield United last summer.

£5m was a healthy sum of money to spend on a player who plays in the same position as a star who was named the best in his position in the division the previous season, which suggests that the club felt he would come in as an upgrade on Scales.

Unfortunately, that did not turn out to be the case as Trusty endured a frustrating first season in Glasgow, and ended the campaign as second-choice behind the Ireland international.

The American dud was an unused substitute in six of the last eight games, including the SFA Cup final, and that was because Scales significantly outperformed him.

As you can see in the table above, the Irishman was far more effective for Celtic in the Premiership than Trusty, with fewer errors and a higher success rate in duels, helping the team to keep more clean sheets in the process.

The £5m signing, who was criticised against Aberdeen in his most recent appearance, is in a difficult position at Parkhead, and it is one that could get even worse for him.

Celtic eyeing new left-sided defender

According to CelticWay, the Scottish Premiership champions are ‘considering’ a bid to sign Familicao central defender Justin De Haas this summer.

The report claims that the Hoops are weighing up an approach for the Dutch centre-back to bolster their ranks after Maik Nawrocki clinched a loan move to German outfit Hannover.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It states that Celtic scouts have assessed De Haas during the summer transfer window, and the club are now plotting a potential swoop to bring him to Parkhead.

The 25-year-old defender, who is said to be attracting interest from several clubs across Europe, is valued at around £3m by the Portuguese club, and it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops are prepared to pay that asking price.

Celtic should now press ahead with a deal to bring the left-footed defender to Parkhead in the coming weeks because he could send Trusty packing this summer.

Why this is bad news for Auston Trusty

This report of the club’s interest in De Haas is bad news for the USA international because it could mean that the former Sheffield United man is surplus to requirements in Glasgow, just 12 months on from his arrival.

As aforementioned, Trusty has already fallen behind Scales in the pecking order in the left-sided centre-back position because of his poor performances in the Premiership last term.

It then seems unlikely that Celtic would pay £3m to bring in another left-footed defender, who is 25 and in the prime years of his career, to be a third-choice option in that position, which is why this could spell danger for Trusty, as he may have to find a new club.

Whilst there is no reported suggestion yet that the American flop is likely to move on from Parkhead, the signing of De Haas could leave him with little game time behind two other players in his position, especially given that Rodgers has made it clear that he wants to play left-footers on the left and right-footers on the right at centre-back.

As you can see in the table above, the £3m-rated colossus outperformed Trusty at league level last season, whilst playing in the Portuguese top-flight, by making more defensive interventions and fewer big errors at the back.

The 6 foot 4 giant, who has previously been described as “aerially dominant” by RangersJournal writer Kai Watson, could come in as another upgrade on the American dud, on top of Scales already being one.

This is why Trusty could be sent packing this summer because the arrival of a second left-footed centre-back who is even better than him could limit his game time next season and force the defender to consider his long-term future at Parkhead.

Of course, Rodgers could go against his preference and use a left-footed player as a back-up option to Cameron Carter-Vickers in the right centre-back role, but that would not be ideal for the left-footed Trusty either.

Celtic can sign a better ST than Kvistgaarden in "complete" £6.8m star

Celtic could forget all about Mathias Kvistgaarden by signing this striker this summer.

Therefore, this latest development will not come as good news for the former Arsenal centre-back, who could find himself on the chopping block this summer.
