Top cricketers visit Dhaka protest rally

Bangladesh’s top cricketers, including captain Mushfiqur Rahim, have visited the scene of a high-profile protest movement in Dhaka

Bangladesh’s top cricketers and officials, led by the captain Mushfiqur Rahim and board president Nazmul Hassan, visited the scene of a high-profile protest movement in central Dhaka on Sunday following public calls for their participation. Others who were present at the show of solidarity included Mashrafe Mortaza and Mohammad Ashraful. The protesters are demanding severe punishment for war criminals who had collaborated with Pakistani forces during the war for independence in 1971. An International Crimes Tribunal had been set up in 2010 to try these collaborators, many of whom are politicians. On February 5, the Tribunal sentenced Abdul Quader Mollah, a convicted war criminal, to life imprisonment in two of the five cases filed against him. Hours after the judgment, five people took to Shahbagh, an intersection near Dhaka University, to demand stricter punishment to those who had been charged (directly and indirectly) with sedition, murder, rape and overall collaboration during the war in 1971. Since then it has attracted tremendous response from the rest of the country as more than a million people have joined the protests in six days. After a grand rally on Friday attended by nearly a million people, there were calls for the cricketers’ participation in the protest. After a discussion with the BCB, the players decided to come under the official banner of the national cricket team in solidarity with the protesters. The team walked in from the eastern side of the Shahbagh intersection, now known as the , and were led towards a truck from where many of the protesters – mainly students, bloggers, professionals and members of the general public – voice their opinion and demands.Mushfiqur, Mashrafe, Ashraful, Nasir Hossain, Abdur Razzak and former captain Habibul Bashar got up on the truck along with the board president and several BCB members. Others like former captain Akram Khan, former cricketer Jahangir Shah Badshah and current players Nazmul Hossain, Elias Sunny, Mominul Haque and Sohag Gazi soaked in the atmosphere. Some were seen walking around the square, and speaking to people and even gaveautographs to school and college students. None of the players officially spoke and remained at the protest scene for around 20 minutes, before walking back towards the bus, accompanied by thousands of people.Later Hassan, the BCB chief, said that the team had decided to visit to lend “solidarity” to the protests.”Their presence here is very exciting,” said Miraj, a college student who has been coming to Shahbagh for the past few days. “To see our national heroes here would mean a lot. I know they are not politically involved, so it is more inspiring to see them here.”Although some of the ministers and political leaders have visited the protests and there have been similar demonstrations all over Bangladesh and around the world among expatriate Bangladeshis, the visit of the cricket team has been the most high-profile yet.

Abbott hungry for more Test cricket

Kyle Abbott, Test cricket’s latest pace-bowling sensation, is one of many South Africans ruing the international schedule’s plans for his country

Kyle Abbott will not play a Test for seven months•AFP

Kyle Abbott, Test cricket’s latest pace-bowling sensation, is one of many South Africans ruing the international schedule’s plans for his country. South Africa do not play Test cricket for the next seven months, with their next assignment a return series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. With the team ranked No.1 in the world there is a disappointment from many quarters, including the players, that they do not feature sooner.Abbott played his first Test at Centurion against Pakistan and, after becoming the country’s second-most successful bowling debutant, he wants more. “I’ve had a taste and it tastes really good. It’s going to be a little frustrating not playing for a while. I feel like I’d love to have another series to showcase my skills again,” he admitted.Graeme Smith, the Test captain, agreed, calling it “disappointing,” to be away from Test cricket for such a length of time. South Africa’s break would have been shorter but their tour to Sri Lanka was truncated and the Tests postponed to 2015 on request from the SLC. They also have the Champions Trophy to occupy them in the winter.Smith’s major concern is that the sizeable gap between Tests is followed by a challenging tour so “preparation is going to key,” he said. “You can’t focus on keeping guys on top of their game for six months so the time just before is when we will have to put in a lot of work.”He may be reassured by the strength of South Africa’s domestic competition, which will resume before the visit to the UAE and provide a base to restart Test training. According to Abbot, the franchise system is at its healthiest and, given the amount of time he has spent there, he may know.Until last Friday, Abbott had only played first-class cricket at domestic level, with the exception of one match for the South African Invitation side against the touring Pakistanis. He believes his time in the franchise prepared him adequately to make the step up to the international stage.”The domestic circuit is at its strongest,” Abbott said. “There are a number of bowlers knocking on the door. It’s a real credit to the system that we’ve got, the High Performance Programme and the even the South Africa A which is run really well now. There are good coaches and good structures to prepare guys to the next level so the guys stepping up are ready. I’d say the core of South African cricket is really strong.”Abbott is the fourth pace bowler to be called up to the Test team under Gary Kirsten. All of Vernon Philander, Marchant de Lange and Rory Kleinveldt enjoyed varying degrees of success at international level as proof that the domestic circuit is functioning as it should and producing players regularly.Only de Lange was selected on potential in the absence of experience. The young quick was part of the South African A side that played against Australia A in October 2011 and his five wickets got him noticed. Due to his express pace, he was invited to national training and picked for the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka later that year. Injuries have since hampered his progress. The other three players picked were included on the weight of their performances at the tier lower-down. Philander was the leading wicket-taker in the first-class competition for two seasons before he got a look in, Kleinveldt succeeded him and was rewarded in the same way and Abbott followed suit. He topped the 2012-13 bowling charts with 49 wickets at an average of 15.36 and considered himself ready for the next level.Abbott also emphasised he was able to make the transition from domestic to international cricket smoothly because he entered a national set-up under no pressure. South Africa have won their last six Test matches and had already beaten Pakistan in the series when Abbott was included in the starting XI.”If there was ever an ideal situation to make your debut in, this was it,” he said. “I could be sitting here with South Africa on the back of ten losses and they are scraping the barrel for new players.” With nothing to lose, literally, Abbott was able to “express myself and give it all I could.”Another part of the ease of adjusting to national level was created by the similarities between the management at the Abbott’s franchise, the Dolphins, and in the South African squad. “Both Lance Klusener and Gary have created a similar mood in the camp. They put a lot of responsibility on the player and so you get on and do your thing.”Klusener and Kirsten are from the same playing era and although their personalities are vastly different, they would have a similar ethos. Not all the franchise coaches come from that group, though. To ensure everyone is aware of the national agenda, Kirsten has started a coaches road-show in which he included franchise coaches in the South African squad preparation and training throughout this summer.Abbott admitted there is still a mindset shift involved in playing international cricket but said it happened instinctively for him. “The professionalism and intensity just steps up. That happens automatically. You look down at your shirt and you see the South African flag on your heart and everything just steps up a gear and you don’t even realise it.” He will see the flag on his shirt again in the Twenty20s against Pakistan and Russell Domingo, the coach in that format, will hope it will have a similar effect.

BPL teams preview – Part II

Preview of the teams participating in the upcoming second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League

Mohammad Isam16-Jan-2013Barisal BurnersChris Gayle’s absence will hurt Barisal Burners•BPL T20

Barisal Burners would hope they retain the luck they enjoyed in the inaugural season of BPL. They head into this year’s tournament without last year’s big force – Chris Gayle – and would have to bank on some of the effective players they have retained. The local talent, like last season, would have to shine through to enable them to progress to the semi-finals.Barisal, during the auctions, seemed intent to retain their foreign players; Brad Hodge, Phil Mustard and Kabir Ali were all retained. They would, however, miss the services of Ahmed Shehzad, their top run-getter last year, and Yasir Arafat, their top wicket-taker. Spinners Saeed Ajmal and Sunil Narine, two of their key players, may only play for a week due to international commitments, but allrounder Azhar Mahmood is likely to be available for the whole season.Among the local players, Mominul Haque is out from the side, but the likes of Alok Kapali, Elias Sunny and Shabbir Rahman are vital additions. All three are allrounders of varying abilities, but the acquirement of Sunny could be profitable, if he displays any of his form from the previous season.Key player Brad Hodge made 346 runs for Barisal last year at a strike rate of over 130. He led the team last year, and was famously checking into a flight when he was called up by the management at the last minute to play a semi-final nobody expected Barisal to play.Major team changesThe biggest game-changer of the BPL is out, and that doesn’t bode well for Barisal. The absence of Chris Gayle is a huge blow. Although he was only available for five matches last season, he hammered two centuries and Barisal took an early lead in the competition. To mitigate Gayle’s absence, the Barisal management chose the globe-trotting Azhar Mahmood. The allrounder played for Dhaka Gladiators last season and will be expected to have a major say, particularly with the bat, as it is likely that he will have to bat up the order in this team.Below the radarSabbir Rahman is a lower middle-order hitter who bowls useful legspin, and possesses talent, according to local coaches. Apart from playing a vital role in Bangladesh’s Asian Games’ gold medal-winning game, however, Sabbir hasn’t shown what he is capable of. He will be expected to hit the ball a long way and field well, but it would be a great loss to the man and the team if his bowling is underused.Last year’s performanceRunners-up.Dhaka GladiatorsTillakaratne Dilshan will replace Imran Nazir to fill in the opener’s slot•AFP

The Dhaka Gladiators won the title last season owing to their star power, which they would bank on this season too. They have filled up their squad with some big local and foreign players. The local strength is led by Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza, followed by Mohammad Ashraful, Anamul Haque and the in-form left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib. It will be crucial for these local players to perform, particularly for Shakib, who will be returning to competitive cricket after suffering a shin injury and missing the ODI series against West Indies. Mashrafe has been named captain and will be expected to last the length of the tournament, though he would also have to take the full load as the team is thin on pace-bowling options. The international stars Shahid Afridi, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Owais Shah and Luke Wright will be in charge of providing the thrust.Key playerShakib Al Hasan remains the top billing in this tournament and the race to get him in the side had six out of seven teams tied in a deadlock during the auction. Dhaka won the race by quoting more money, and they would be expecting him to fire with bat and ball. Shakib didn’t have a particularly great time for Khulna last season, except for the semi-final in which he managed to turn everyone’s attention away from the knockouts controversy with his sublime hitting that almost took his side to the final.Major team changesImran Nazir has moved to Chittagong Kings this season. It will be a blow for Dhaka who will be without their best batsman from last season.Tillakaratne Dilshan will have to fill in Nazir’s opening slot, and that is an effective replacement. Dilshan will also bowl darts with the new ball, his brand of spin that will be highly effective in this format and on these wickets.Below the radarSoumya Sarkar came into prominence with a double-century in a regional Under-19 tournament. Though the score came against lowly Qatar, the left-hand batsman is one to look out for. He has opened the batting regularly with Tamim Iqbal last season for Victoria Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League, and will be expected to take a step up in this tournament.Last year’s performanceChampions.Chittagong KingsAftab Ahmed, who hasn’t lived up to his potential so far, could be a key player in the Chittagong line-up•ICL

Chittagong Kings would hope luck doesn’t desert them, unlike last season, when they were denied a place in the semi-finals at the last moment by the organisers, amid confusion. They have planned well this time, and have a team with many big hitters, but again, would be best advised not to include too many Twenty20 specialists in their line-up like last season. Some of the smart picks have been Dwayne Bravo, Ravi Bopara, Ryan ten Doeschate, Jacob Oram and Brendan Taylor. Imran Nazir and Wahab Riaz – pending availability – will also be major contributors as will be Jason Roy, the talented English batsman, and their last season’s surprise package, Kevon Cooper.Mahmudullah, Enamul Haque jnr and Aftab Ahmed are important local players, but Chittagong will need contributions from Rubel Hossain, Marshall Ayub and Arafat Sunny if they are to have all-round balance.Key playerMahmudullah has always been an underrated player for the national side, but the 2012-13 season has been different for the allrounder. He has played in the Sri Lanka Premier League, withstood a barrage from West Indies’ fast bowlers, and played an important role in Bangladesh’s ODI series win over them. He is set to lead Chittagong in this tournament again, and his role in picking the right men would be important.Major team changesAlthough he played just two matches, the absence of Tamim Iqbal from the Chittagong line-up will be a tough one to fill. The inclusion of Ravi Bopara will give them batting strength, something that went missing for most of the tournament last year, mainly due to Tamim’s absence.Below the radarAftab Ahmed has been away from attention for far too long, particularly for a talented batsman. He played meekly for Dhaka Gladiators last season, and will have a grand stage to bring out his audacious shots. He would hope that his timid nature is not a hindrance.Last year’s performanceFifth.

Cadê a chapada do Nenê?

Àquela altura, o Grêmio vencia o Corinthians e deixava o São Paulo fora do G4. A Chape se beneficiava da derrota do América-MG para o Flu e do 0 a 0 do Sport com o Santos.

Gol do alívio

'All of us will miss Ricky' – Smith

Graeme Smith has declared Ricky Ponting the opponent he has most respected during his career, and said South Africa’s forming a guard of honour for Ponting was never in doubt. The two men were opposing captains in 27 international matches, including some classic Tests, and met each other 41 times in total, and they shared a poignant moment as Ponting, while walking to the crease one last time, shook Smith’s hand while the guard of honour was in place.”It was just something that needed to be done,” Smith said. “For me, having played against Ricky so much over the years he’s certainly the player that I respect most that I’ve played against, for his intensity and the way he has played the game, the runs he has scored against us. He has always been so competitive. It was just a sign of respect from us for someone who has given the game of cricket so much.”All of us will miss Ricky as an opponent. Hopefully now him and I can catch up for a beer. I’m sure a few of us would love to do that. Him and I have got to know each other fairly well over the last few years, whether it’s sitting on planes or catching up after series. It will be nice to have that relaxed nature now and have some time together.”Although the South Africans came out on top in Ponting’s farewell match, it wasn’t always the case. Ponting scored eight Test centuries against South Africa and made 2132 runs against them, the most of any player in the modern era and behind only Denis Compton and Wally Hammond on the all-time list. Smith said there were a number of standout moments, and he noted that captaining against an in-form Ponting was nearly impossible.”I think there’s a few innings in the early days [that I will remember],” Smith said. “We ended up winning the Test match, but the 100 and 99 in Melbourne on Boxing Day [in 2008], there was another time at the Wanderers when he got runs and the wicket went around all over the shop.”There were moments when you thought it was really tough to bat and he just took the game to you and played in a way you haven’t really seen other people play. The tempo with which he played the game as a batter, as a captain it was really interesting to try and manage. I wasn’t part of it but I think that World Cup knock at the Wanderers has got to rank as one of the top ones that I have watched.”

It was a bit of a shocker – Prior

Matt Prior admitted England had endured “a bit of a shocker” as they sunk to 191 all out in their first innings in Ahmedabad

George Dobell in Ahmedabad17-Nov-2012Matt Prior admitted England had endured “a bit of a shocker” as they sunk to 191 all out in their first innings in Ahmedabad. England’s wicketkeeper accepted that his side had “underperformed” in replying to India’s 521 for 8 declared, but felt they could take confidence from the start to their second innings. After being asked to follow-on 330 behind, Nick Compton and Alastair Cook reached stumps on 111 without loss, meaning India go into the fourth day leading by 219.”We all know that our first innings was a bit of a shocker,” Prior said. “To lose wickets quickly is always disappointing.”I sat here two days before the Test and told you guys that it’s all very well talking, but you have to go out there and do it. And unfortunately, first innings, we didn’t do it. Simple as that. We’re all honest enough to hold our hands up and say we didn’t get that right.”Everyone I know for a fact was keen to get into this Test match. The batters were keen to go out there and prove a point. We knew the wicket was going to turn a bit. Maybe we got a little bit too ahead of ourselves and a little bit panicky.”While accepting that England had underperformed, Prior was keen to defend Ian Bell who was dismissed first ball, caught in the deep, as he came down the wicket and drove to deep mid-off.”He knows he got it slightly wrong today,” Prior said. “One thing you talk about is playing your own game and backing yourself. Only Belly will know the plan he had and what he wanted to do and it didn’t come off. If it had gone for a one-bounce four everyone would’ve said, ‘what a fantastic shot, he’s off and running.’Those are the fine lines when you play sport. When it does not come off, it doesn’t look great, admittedly, but you cannot question the quality and the class of a batter like Ian Bell. We all know that he’s class and hopefully he’ll show that. He is one of the finest batters of hitting the ball over the top that I know.”Prior insisted that there would be no recriminations in the England dressing room. Instead, he said the mood would remain constructive and England would take heart from the opening partnership in the second innings.”We’ve played long enough and know each other well enough,” Prior said. “There’s no point sulking. We have a big second innings coming up and he’ll be as motivated as any of our batters to get a big score.”As a professional sportsman you have to look forward, look at a day and take the positives. The way Compo and Cookie went about their business this afternoon was fantastic. To end up none down at the end of the day, we’ll take a huge amount from that. We’re still behind in the game but it gives us a lot of confidence that we can go out and bat for a long period of time.”In the second innings we seem to be a lot calmer. We have to take a lot from that, get our game-plans right and stick to a method. It’s turning a bit and bouncing a bit, but you can bat periods of time.”There’s no point crying over spilt milk. You have to move on. We knew that we underperformed. No-one’s more frustrated than the guys sat in the dressing-room, but, most importantly we went out there and are none down. That’s a fantastic turnaround. We’re behind the game, but fighting hard and still in the game.”We’re not going sit here and go, ‘we’re fantastically placed here and everything looks great.’ Because it’s not. We’re still a long way behind the game, the wicket’s turning and there is a bit of reverse swing. But what we will do is fight. And we will learn lessons from the first innings and try and make strides forward. If we do get anything from this game, that would be great. But, it’s not unrealistic.”

USA T20 threatens to undermine English season

England’s traditional cricketing summer must face up to another unwelcome challenge next week when meetings take place in London to promote a United States Twenty20 league

David Hopps and Peter Della Penna01-Sep-2012

The Americans are coming – and it spells a further threat for England’s traditional cricketing summer•AFP

England’s traditional cricketing summer, already under siege from the expanding ambitions of IPL, must face up to another unwelcome challenge next week when meetings take place in London to promote a United States Twenty20 league planned to launch next July with a host of international stars. The league will be launched in direct competition to the English season with ambitions to attract many of the world’s top stars for what Neil Maxwell, one of the main proponents, is presenting to the States as “baseball on steroids.”Maxwell also freely admitted that USA promoters are monitoring tense negotiations between the ECB and Kevin Pietersen, which will determine whether he has an England future. Maxwell told ESPNcricinfo: “We haven’t spoken to Pietersen as yet. We are keen to work through the Boards to ensure the appropriate processes a followed. Once his position and ours is clarified we will no doubt chat.”Pietersen’s choice of whether he commits himself to a serious future on the Test circuit – which he told England he would on a specially-commisioned YouTube video – or becomes an itinerant player, making a fortune on the Twenty20 circuit, could now not be more stark.England will be slap bang in the middle of an Ashes summer, and will automatically be unavailable, but if UST20 succeeds it will cause further disruption for a county circuit already struggling to find overseas players of quality, including for a long-standing t20 tournament that is struggling to compete with newer, brasher competitors. While the ECB continues to agonise over the future make-up of its t20 competition, which earlier this week lost its sponsor, Friends Life, promoters from the United States are heading for London to begin the tender process for six inaugural franchises, with ambitions to grow to as many as ten by 2016,The league would most likely get underway after the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy, which takes runs from June 6-23 in England. The 2013 Ashes Series then follows, which means that top international stars from Australia and England would be unavailable but players from other countries might be tempted by the prospect of coming to play in America.Cricket Holdings America, a joint venture headed by the USA Cricket Association and New Zealand Cricket, has also declared ambitions for the USA to apply and secure hosting rights for future ICC events, including the ICC World Twenty20 within the next 10 years. In addition to taking bids for franchises starting this month, CHA also plans to host exhibition matches in the USA next year between imported stars and local talent. The population in the USA with South Asian background has doubled in ten years, leaving promoters convinced that the time is right to launch what will initially be a league relying entirely on imported talent.Maxwell, a CHA director, told The this week that the success of ESPNcricinfo in the United States was further proof that a market exists. There is little pretence, however, about educating an American audience, initially at least, about the finer points of the game.”Our marketing has to appeal to mainstream America,” he said. “It’s about promoting an entertainment product. Almost remove the reference to cricket and create a thing called Twenty20 that competes with movies. Link it to Hollywood and Bollywood and provide all the razzmatazz that goes with it.”CHA hopes for the league to grow to as many as 10 franchises by 2016. The first season, reports suggest, will be played primarily in New York and San Francisco. New York has thriving West Indian and South Asian immigrant populations, particularly in Brooklyn and Queens, while the San Francisco Bay Area includes Silicon Valley, where thousands of South Asians have immigrated over the years for work in the software and technology industries. If the league does launch franchises in New York and San Francisco, it would be highly probable that matches in those cities would be played on artificial pitches. While both cities are home to multiple professional sports teams with outdoor stadiums that hold in excess of 40,000 seats, neither city has an international standard natural turf wicket facility exclusively for cricket and it is doubtful that one would be built to be ready in time for next summer.Currently, the only facility in the USA that is approved by the ICC for use in Twenty20 and ODI matches is the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida. Two t20 internationals between New Zealand and West Indies in Florida in July attracted decent crowdsA Twenty20 league launched in the summer months would primarily be competing for fan and media interest inside the USA with mid-season Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer. The NHL and NBA typically finish their play-offs by the middle of June while the NFL, currently the most popular professional league in the USA, starts its regular season every September.
