Celtic predicted XI vs Motherwell

After Celtic beat Real Betis 3-2 in their previous Europa League outing, the Hoops are back in SPFL action this afternoon with a home clash against Motherwell.

With the Bhoys having the likes of Albian Ajeti, Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota and Giorgos Giakoumakis out injured as well as Christopher Jullien and Karamoko Dembele, here’s how Ange Postecoglou could line up his team this afternoon with as many as ten changes.

In goal, we think Joe Hart will return to the starting XI with Scott Bain dropping out after scoring an own goal against Betis.

At left-back, we can see Greg Taylor coming back in for Liam Scales with Josip Juranovic coming in for Osaze Urhoghide in the right-back position.

For the centre-back positions, we think Postecoglou will bring Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt back in with Nir Bitton, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £14k-per-week according to Salary Sport, and Stephen Welsh dropping out after their appearances in midweek.

In the two central-midfield positions, we think Postecoglou will opt for club captain Callum McGregor and David Turnbull ahead of James McCarthy and Ismaila Soro who both started in the win over Betis.

Ahead of those two, we think Postecoglou will bring Tom Rogic and Michael Johnston back into the frame with Ewan Henderson also starting after coming on as a substitute against Betis and scoring a goal.

To make up for the severe injury issues Celtic have at the top of the pitch with the likes of Furuhashi, Giakoumakis and Ajeti out, we can see Liel Abada being given a shot to lead the team through the middle. He’s been an offensive threat this term, registering a tally of seven goals and eight assists across all competitions so far this season and could deliver the Hoops another league win.

Whether Postecoglou goes with this exact starting XI that we have suggested or not, this will still be a big test for the Bhoys in their latest push for the title against a side that have won three of their five previous league games.

With so many key attacking players out injured, Postecoglou and everyone else at the club will be hoping that the team will be able to keep racking up points while they are out of action so they don’t drop out of the title race.

Pakistan prevail in thrilling climax

A washout would have ensured them a place in the semi-finals but Pakistan proved they were capable of progressing to the next stage based on performance alone

The Bulletin by Siddhartha Talya23-Jan-2010Pakistan 117 for 8 (Ahsan 30, Aziz 28, Azam 17*, Unadkat 2-26) beat India 114 for 9 (Mandeep 40, Fayyaz 4-27) by two wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Pakistan celebrate a thrilling win over India•International Cricket CouncilPakistan and India livened up a contest that, at one stage, was in danger of ending in a washout. A combination of quality seam bowling from Fayyaz Butt and enterprising batting by Hammad Azam sealed a thrilling two-wicket win in the final over in front of a sparse yet boisterous crowd at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, knocking the defending champions out of the Under-19 World Cup and setting up a semi-final clash with West Indies on Monday.Pakistan were favourites after they had bowled out India for 114 but the early shock in their chase, when they lost three wickets for 16, immediately sparked comparisons to the World Cup final between the teams in 2006. Pakistan had emerged victors then, defending a paltry 109, courtesy Anwar Ali, whose prodigious swing toppled an overconfident India. Sandeep Sharma looked good to return the favour this time with his movement, beating the top-order batsmen consistently before bowling opener Babar Azam with a big inswinger. The effect rubbed off on his bowling partners, Saurabh Netravalkar and Jaidev Unadkat, who accounted for Ahmed Shehzad and captain Aseem Ghumman by squaring them up.On a big ground and a slow outfield, boundaries were elusive and Ahsan Ali and Rameez Aziz set about stabilising the creeping run-rate by way of piercing the field. There were intermittent hits to the fence, including a clean strike over long-on by Aziz. But the preoccupation with singles and twos led to a moment of indecision and resulted in Ahsan’s run out, ending a 55-run stand. Aziz holed out the next over, swinging the game towards India but bringing the eventual match-winner Hammad to the crease.India’s surge at the close of their innings was a belated one while Pakistan’s, despite the frequent loss of wickets, was helped by a couple of timely bursts from Hammad’s partners. With 24 needed off 17, Mohammad Waqas smashed Ashok Menaria over midwicket for six and fell the next ball. With 16 needed off 12, Usman Qadir skied Unadkat for a couple and followed up with a boundary over extra cover to bring the equation to a run-a-ball, but fell the next delivery.Amid the swinging fortunes, Hammad held firm. He hit Sharma for a six over midwicket and scooped Unadkat over short fine leg to leave Pakistan needing just four in the final over. There was a moment of trepidation when his partner Sarmad Bhatti fell to the second ball of the final over. The batsmen, however, had crossed and Hammad finished the chase by cutting Sharma through point to crush Indian hopes. The Indian innings needed a repair job from Mandeep Singh, who stroked 40, to put up a score that almost proved adequate. But Fayyaz had justified Azeem Ghumman’s decision to bowl by nipping out the Indian openers in the first over, and returned in the end to take two more.

Agent handles offer from Spurs

As per Mundo Deportivo, relayed by Sport Witness, another update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to sign Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.

The Lowdown: Spurs join race…

The 24-year-old has been of heavy interest to Spurs according to reports from these last few months with 90min first claiming that Fabio Paratici had joined the race for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Dembele’s deal at Barcelona expires at the end of this season, making him one of the many potential 2022 free agents linked with a move to north London.

It appears Tottenham have their sights set on big names for low fees with Mundo Deportivo now bringing an update on the pursuit of the Catalans forward.

The Latest: Agent handles Spurs offer…

As per their information, via SW, Dembele’s representative is handling an ‘offer’ from Tottenham for the player’s services as Paratici chases the France international.

However, he also has proposals from various other clubs, including Chelsea, who they seem to favour more as it stands.

That’s due to Spurs, Man United and Newcastle not guaranteeing as much as the Blues when it comes to reaching ‘high levels’.

The Verdict: Avoid…

Chelsea being ahead of Spurs in the race for Dembele as it stands could actually be a blessing in disguise for manager Antonio Conte.

Despite Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s recent claim he is ‘better than Mbappe’ (footballtransfers.com), the 27-cap star’s history of hamstring problems combined with a sky high £210,000-per-week salary make this a risky move from Paratici’s perspective.

Tottenham recently announced an £80.2m pre-tax loss for the last financial year, taking their overall club debt to £706m, and the last thing they need is another financial strain on the club.

Dembele’s ability is evident, with former boss Ronald Koeman calling him ‘fantastic’ for his return to form earlier this year, but his signing would still raise eyebrows at Tottenham with the obstacles involved.

Benteke has been Palace’s surprise gem

It’s been a fabulous start to life under new manager Patrick Vieira for Crystal Palace, but one player’s outstanding performances have come as more of a surprise than most.

In just 12 Premier League appearances for the Eagles in the opening weeks of the current campaign, Christian Benteke has bagged four goals and provided one assist, including a brace last time out against Burnley.

His tally of four strikes means the Belgium international has already bettered his tallies for the 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns, highlighting the striker’s remarkable upturn in form over the last 18 months.

When summer signing Odsonne Eduard arrived at Selhurst Park over the summer, it would have been logical to predict that Benteke would have to settle for a much more subdued role this term.

However, the 30-year-old has risen to the added competition for places in extraordinary fashion, producing a string of dominating displays for the south London outfit.

But his improved performances may not have come as a surprise to Vieira, who outlined Benteke’s attributes and credentials following a pre-season game back in August.

“It is a plus to have Christian in our team because in the air, he is one of the best if not the best in the league,” the French tactician told Palace TV. “This is a powerful weapon to have in the squad.

“We have to use it well, and I was really pleased with him scoring the goal. It was his first game after coming back from internationals, the Euros. Coming back and scoring was good for him and his confidence.”

Since then, the 6 foot 2 beast has replicated his pre-season form on the biggest stage of all, and his underlying numbers are further evidence of eye-catching showings that are arguably right up there with the surprisingly dominant Conor Gallagher too.

As per SofaScore, Benteke has had 25 shots this term, has won a whopping 74 duels, made a monstrous 25 clearancesand supplied nine key passes for his teammates.

If he can maintain this sort of form for the rest of the campaign, then Vieira’s charges will be well placed to carry on their surge up the top-flight table.

Pakistan keen on playing 'home' series in India

The cash-strapped Pakistan Cricket Board is exploring the possibility of playing its ‘home’ series in India, if the BCCI and the Indian government approve of it

Cricinfo staff14-Dec-2009The cash-strapped Pakistan Cricket Board is exploring the possibility of playing its ‘home’ series in India, if the BCCI and the Indian government approve of the notion. The PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has said that if the BCCI is willing to reschedule the tour of Pakistan, which was cancelled in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks last November, Pakistan won’t mind playing that series in India.”We are playing our ‘home’ Test series in New Zealand right now, we can plan a ‘home’ Test series in India as well, provided the Indians show interest,” Butt told PTI. “If India is willing to reschedule that series or part of that series in India, it is something we would like to discuss with them. We just need to find a window next year for such a series which would I am sure be a big draw.”The BCCI, however, has ruled out a resumption of bilateral matches with Pakistan in the near future because of India’s packed schedule for 2010. It added that it will take a call on the issue only late next year, provided the government gives the go-ahead. The PCB is looking for ways to recover the US$47 million loss from the cancelled series against India, and has already reached an agreement with the ECB to play a two-Test series against Australia in England next summer.”We are definitely keen on playing a bilateral series with India as soon as possible and it is something we have been discussing at all levels with our government, with their board officials and with the ICC,” Butt said. The PCB has been hit by several pull-outs over the last couple of years, due to security fears and the unstable political climate. It hit its biggest crisis back in March when the Sri Lankan team was caught in the middle of the Lahore attacks, an event which led to Pakistan being stripped of all its World Cup matches for 2011.Their players weren’t allowed to take part in the 2009 IPL and the uncertainty over their participation in 2010 continues. Non-contracted players are eligible for the auction, but those who had their contracts suspended by the franchises can play only if their owners decide to drop other foreign players to accommodate them.

Leeds: Gelhardt withdraws from England U20 squad

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has been forced to withdraw from England’s Under-20 squad due to injury, LeedsLive report.

The Lowdown: Gelhardt makes his mark…

The 19-year-old, who joined the club from Wigan Athletic back in 2020, made his long-awaited Premier League debut in October. He came on as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Southampton and followed that up with a starring cameo display against Wolves at Elland Road.

Gelhardt won a late penalty as the Whites drew 1-1 with Wolves, however, he hasn’t featured since in the league. The forward, labelled as ‘astonishing’ by presenter Adrian Durham, was missing in the matchday squad against Leicester City with an unknown injury, and that has now stopped him from featuring on the international stage.

The Latest: Gelhardt out

LeedsLive shared a story on Tuesday evening regarding all things Whites related.

One of the topics was on Gelhardt, with the youngster taking himself out of England’s Under-20 squad for a game against Portugal.

The Verdict: Bad timing…

It seemed as if Gelhardt, who has been involved in 23 goals for Leeds’ Under-23 side since joining, was really starting to break through into Marcelo Bielsa’s team, so this isn’t exactly good news for the Whites.

Patrick Bamford has been out since September with an ankle injury, meaning Gelhardt has been given the opportunity to impress.

He was doing just that before missing the game with Leicester, so hopefully, the injury isn’t a serious one and he can be back performing in a Leeds shirt over the coming weeks.

Aston Villa: Fans react to kit reveal

Aston Villa will be changing kit supplier next season, according to a report from Footy Headlines.

The three-year deal they signed with Kappa is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and they will take the opportunity to switch to Castore from the start of the 2022/23 season.

It’s not yet known how long Villa’s contract with the Liverpool-based manufacturer will last, or indeed how much income it will net for the Midlands club.

Castore’s reputation pre-Villa

Castore already have agreements with two Premier League clubs – Newcastle United and Villa’s Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers. They also manufacture the kits of Steven Gerrard’s former club Rangers and are believed to have struck a deal with Champions League outfit Sevilla.

A number of Newcastle fans were critical of the designs for their 2021/22 strips, while Rangers’ away kit received a ‘largely negative reaction’ from many of the Ibrox faithful.

Fan feed Villa Report relayed the news, and here’s what some supporters had to say about the potentially “dreadful” switch to Castore.

GSB could stay in any West Ham takeover

David Sullivan and David Gold could remain at West Ham even after any future takeover of the club, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire…

What’s the word?

The Irons are expected to secure fresh investment from Czech billionaire and Sparta Prague co-owner Daniel Kretinsky, who is in talks to take a minority share of 27%, as per The Athletic.

It’s thought that this could see the 46-year-old take a majority stake in the future and would spell the ‘beginning of the end’ for the club’s current ownership in this guise. However, Maguire believes that GSB would stick around in the boardroom even if that does come to fruition.

He told Football Insider this week: “You can see the benefits in respect of David Gold and David Sullivan. They both have huge affection for the club – from a nostalgia point of view, they might want to keep some ownership.

“I think they’d like to continue to be a presence in the West Ham boardroom.

“I anticipate that the club will be issuing some more shares, and Gold and Sullivan will transfer some of their shares.

“My understanding is the club will get a financial injection as well. If you’re putting in that amount of money, you’ll want a seat at the table. But I think it’s a case of being heard rather than being a dictator.”

Like a lingering smell

There would be very little benefit in Gold, Sullivan and Karren Brady remaining in any capacity at the London Stadium, should the Hammers get taken over by Kretinsky – or anyone else in the future.

The ownership trio have regularly faced backlash from the club’s fanbase over their tenure, leading to numerous demonstrations, marches, protests, chants and much, much more.

West Ham may be flying high in fourth place, competing in the Europa League and looking on the up under David Moyes, but that doesn’t excuse the ineptitude in the boardroom, and many fans will not forget the years before this either.

If they were to stick around after any takeover, then much of the Irons faithful will surely be concerned and quite angry by their potential involvement when the east Londoners should be continuing to progress under a new and exciting era.

Therefore, this latest claim should be enough to leave fans fearful of what might lie ahead – whilst plenty will be getting their desire of promising new owners, it seems as if they may never truly be rid of GSB.

Only time will tell.

Vettori cool on support for Moles

Daniel Vettori has given New Zealand’s coach Andy Moles little more than qualified support after Thursday’s reports that the senior players wanted Moles sacked

Cricinfo staff23-Oct-2009Daniel Vettori has given New Zealand’s coach Andy Moles little more than qualified support after Thursday’s reports that the senior players wanted Moles sacked. Vettori, the captain, was pressed on the issue when accepting his prize at the New Zealand Cricket awards night and was less than enthusiastic in his endorsement of Moles.”I think we have to be,” Vettori said when asked if he would be happy for Moles to continue as coach. “There’s no point me making statements to the contrary. I think we have to prepare to take a team away and get the best out of them. Andy and I have a good working relationship but whether that’s enough to make the team better is the question that’s been asked.”One of the concerns that the senior players were reported to have raised with NZC was that Vettori had effectively been coaching the team for the past six months and that Moles had not provided enough tactical or technical support. When asked if the players were unhappy with Moles’ input, Vettori was evasive.”I don’t think I’d put it in those terms … we’re not sitting around trying to plot Andy’s demise,” Vettori said, as reported by NZPA. “Whenever players are asked honest questions about anything they give their answers.”I think guys have voiced ways of making the team better. Part of that is my captaincy, part of it is players fronting up and a part of it is Andy improving as well. We just want the best for the team.”Moles and Vettori sat at the same table at the awards dinner in Auckland and Vettori said it had been a difficult day. The players are believed to like Moles as a person but question whether he is the right man to coach the team.”It’s been a tough day for a number of people involved and hopefully everyone can deal with it in the best possible manner,” Vettori said. “I think Andy understands this is part of cricketing life. Guys are always looking for ways to improve and you constantly go through a review process.”Moles was expected to enter mediation talks with NZC on Friday so the issue could be dealt with before the team flies out on Monday to begin its one-day series with Pakistan in the UAE. Should Moles quit before then, Vettori did not expect a replacement coach to be in place for the tour.”Our relationship stands strong in what we need to do,” he said. “Andy and I are at the helm and until we know anything different that’s the status quo … It would be incredibly difficult for someone to step in at short notice.”

Dominant Australia take control

Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson compiled more in a single second-wicket stand of 119 than England’s entire line-up managed in 33.5 overs

The Bulletin by Andrew Miller at Headingley07-Aug-2009Australia 196 for 4 (Ponting 78, Watson 51) lead England 102 (Prior 37*, Siddle 5-21) by 94 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMarcus North took a splendid catch at third slip to remove Andrew Strauss•PA PhotosRicky Ponting and Shane Watson compiled more in a single second-wicket stand of 119 than England’s entire line-up managed in 33.5 overs of abject surrender, as Australia built on the efforts of their four-man seam attack to seize control of the crucial fourth Test at Headingley. Though England battled back in the final session by claiming three wickets in as many overs, including Ponting for 78, nothing could gloss over their humiliation in the opening exchanges of the day. A single pitiful session could well have cost them their chance to reclaim the Ashes.Shorn of the services of Andrew Flintoff, whose damaged right knee failed to respond to treatment, and already lacking the aggression and presence that Kevin Pietersen brings to their middle-order, England went into a Test without either of their kingpin players for the first time since the tour of Bangladesh in October 2003, and duly played in a manner befitting their opponents of six years ago. They had been handed a late fitness scare when Matt Prior suffered a pre-toss back spasm, which required the toss to be delayed by ten minutes as England finalised their starting XI, and the bewilderment in their ranks was as plain as it had been at 5 o’clock that morning, when a fire alarm at the team hotel had left them shivering in the Leeds drizzle during a mass evacuation. For most of the summer, Australia have been the team seemingly lacking in direction, but with a sniff of uncertainty in their opponents’ ranks, they at last had a bowling attack to exploit the situation. The decision to recall Stuart Clark for his first Test of the summer, in place of the spinner Nathan Hauritz, was a gamble that paid rich dividends. He marked his comeback with a pre-lunch spell of 3 for 7 in 6.5 overs, while Peter Siddle followed up after the break with 4 for 3 in 14 balls, to finish with the stand-out figures of 5 for 21. Each of the four bowlers claimed at least one wicket, with Ben Hilfenhaus desperately unlucky not to have pinned Andrew Strauss lbw with the very first ball of the match.Ricky Ponting continued his outstanding form at Headingley with 78•Getty ImagesAs it turned out, Strauss survived a mere 17 balls before squirting a fat edge off Siddle to Marcus North at third slip, whose stunning one-handed reflex catch was the catalyst for the performance that followed. Strauss had spent the final minutes before the start fretting over the fitness of Prior, who injured his back while playing football in the warm-ups, leaving Jonathan Trott on the verge of a debut and Paul Collingwood pencilled in for the wicketkeeping duties, and his mind was evidently some way from the action in the middle. The confirmation of Flintoff’s lack of fitness ended up being the very least of his worries. In the event, the only England batsman to show any spine was none other than Prior, who was out in the middle at least two sessions sooner than he might have anticipated, but gritted his way to 37 not out from 43 balls before running out of partners. One other batsman managed double figures – Alastair Cook, who was the mainstay of a flimsy top order with 30 from 65 balls – while the middle-order triumvirate of Ravi Bopara, Ian Bell and Collingwood showed worrying shortcomings in temperament and technique respectively.Hilfenhaus accounted for Bopara, earning due reward for his line, length and consistent swing when Michael Hussey collected a loose back-foot punch in the gully, and at 16 for 2, the stage was hardly set for the fragile Bell to make his mark. Mitchell Johnson responded to his arrival with his best and most hostile spell of the series. Threatening to bend the ball back into the right-hander at will, and finding a superb line to complement his subtle changes of length, Johnson tormented Bell’s outside edge before slipping in a wicked bouncer that was gloved through to Brad Haddin.Next in the procession was Collingwood, whose returns have faded alarmingly since his match-saving performance at Cardiff in the first Test. He couldn’t negotiate Clark’s sharp outswing, which he prodded limply to Ponting at second slip for a fifth-ball duck, and Clark claimed his second scalp in the space of 11 balls when Cook’s resistance ended with a low edge to Michael Clarke at first slip.Prime Numbers33.5The number of overs England lasted in their first innings. It’s the lowest in the first innings in any match in which they’ve won the toss and chosen to bat. It’s also the least number of overs batted by a team in the first innings of a Test at Headingley. 102England’s total, which is their lowest in the first innings of a home Test since being bundled out for 77 against Australia at Lord’s in 1997. 4The number of ducks in England’s innings. Only three times have they had more ducks in an innings. 9.5The number of overs Peter Siddle bowled for his five-for. It’s the seventh occasion, since 1970, of an Australian bowler taking five wickets after bowling ten overs or less.105.25Ricky Ponting’s average at Headingley. In four innings, he has scores of 127, 144, 72 and 78.Prior did his best to rally the innings in his standard counter-punching style, but Stuart Broad found the going extremely tough in his over-promoted position of No. 7, and was extracted on the stroke of lunch when Katich at short leg scooped Clark’s third of the innings. Then it was over to Siddle to make mincemeat of a tail that had wagged regularly in the series so far, but was unable to make any headway at all with the momentum all in the bowlers’ favour. Graeme Swann laboured to a 15-ball duck which ended with a snick to first slip, while Harmison – back in the side at Flintoff’s expense – edged to the keeper to notch the 20th duck of his career, an England record he now shares with Mike Atherton.James Anderson did at least manage to extend his duckless run to 53 innings, but the scampered single that preserved his world record culminated in a leg injury that visibly reduced his subsequent effectiveness with the ball. He and Graham Onions were bounced from the crease in consecutive Siddle deliveries, whereupon Shane Watson clattered Anderson’s first two deliveries of the reply through point for a brace of fours in a style reminiscent of Michael Slater. Though Harmison responded by extracting Katich at leg gully with the fourth ball of his comeback, Ponting emerged to put his personal seal on the day with a smouldering and initiative-seizing cameo.Once again, Ponting came to the crease to a chorus of boos, but true to form, he turned the animosity to his advantage. Latching onto the slightest error in length, he pulled Onions’ first ball through midwicket for six, in an over that eventually went for 17 runs, as Australia’s fifty was brought up in just 39 deliveries. Ponting’s only let-off en route to his 63-ball half-century came on 32, when Bell missed a shy from the covers that would have run him out by five yards. For as long as he and Watson were in tandem, Australia’s dominance was absolute. Watson, revelling in his new opener’s role, cracked his third half-century in as many innings, and battered Harmison for four fours in nine balls as England’s bowlers completely forgot about the virtues of line and length. But then, almost without warning, they finally remembered to pitch the ball up, and with a hint of movement around that habitual 30-over mark, they succeeded in stemming the tide.First to strike was Onions, who pinned Watson lbw for 51 as he whipped across the line, whereupon Broad – for the first time this summer – opted to follow suit. Twice in four balls he angled the ball in from a full length, first to end Ponting’s stay on 78, and then to remove Hussey before he could get going. England created opportunities as the shadows lengthened, not least when Harmison, in a furious final spell, cracked Michael Clarke on the helmet and the glove from consecutive deliveries. But by the close, Australia’s hold on the Ashes was looking as sprightly as it has done since Cardiff.
