Newcastle United: Keith Downie gives big update on Matty Longstaff future

Keith Downie has given a rather big update on the future of Newcastle United ace Matty Longstaff on his official Twitter page.

According to his tweet, the Sky Sports presenter confirmed that he “will stay at SJP” after Udinese, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United all tried to sign him up on a free transfer.

Longstaff is now set to sign a new long-term deal to stay at his boyhood club after some convincing by Steve Bruce.

Another report linked Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton and David Moyes’ West Ham United with a possible move for Longstaff given that his contract was running out, but now any move away from St. James’ Park seems to have been blown out of the water.

Indeed, the central midfield player enjoyed a fine breakthrough season in 2019/20, where he played in a total of 15 games in all competitions, scoring three goals, including two against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United in the Premier League, as per Transfermarkt.

Longstaff is also an established youth international player, having played in two matches for the England U20’s side (via the website).

Bruce will be delighted that he has convinced the homegrown talent to stay, as he can now give some healthy competition to the likes of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and his brother Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park.

At just 20 years of age as well, Longstaff still has time to grow and develop as a football player, as he will now be hoping to kick-start his Magpies career for the years to come.

Geordies, are you happy that Longstaff has stayed? Comment below!

Spurs can find Mousa Dembele’s heir in Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Ever since Mousa Dembele left Tottenham back in January of 2019, the north London side have greatly missed their former midfield maestro.

Despite standing at 6 foot 1, the Belgian was fleet of foot, and glided past players with ease. Such was the incredible impression that he made in his time at Spurs, Mauricio Pochettino paid him one of the greatest compliments he could by comparing him to some of football’s greats.

He said: “I can only talk about him because I know very well him after nearly four years. And I told you and then some people use my words to describe him as a genius of the football. And for me he is this type of player, I think I told you in my book, I put him next to Ronaldinho, Maradona, Okocha – players that I was lucky to play with.”

Can you name every one of Spurs’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But since Dembele’s exit to the Chinese Super League, Spurs haven’t had a midfielder in a similar mould to the Belgian; capable of starting from deep, carrying the ball forward, and being a threat with both his passing and strength further up the pitch.

However, if the latest reports from Foot Mercato are to be believed, then the Lilywhites could be finding Dembele’s perfect heir in Lazio powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

At 6 foot 3, the Serbia international is similarly tall and powerful, and whilst his physical attributes match up, he is equally as impressive with the ball at his feet too.

This season, the 25-year-old has been in imperious form for Lazio in Serie A, racking up five goals and four assists in 27 games across all competitions. Aside from being defensively sound, averaging 1.8 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, he has been a monster when marauding forward.

He has averaged two shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game, and that ability to go through the gears from the middle of the park is exactly what Spurs have been missing since Dembele’s departure.

It’s no surprise that his agent, Mateja Kezman, spoke highly of his abilities, saying: “He has remarkable attributes and you’ll not find another player in the world with that power, muscular structure and height combined with technique and tactical awareness.”

It’s a signing that could add a different dimension to Spurs’ midfield, and one that will surely have people reminiscing about the good old days of Dembele.

Spurs must steer well clear of PSG stalwart Thiago Silva

Tottenham’s reported transfer target Thiago Silva has admitted that he is on the verge of leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Jose Mourinho’s side are eyeing up a free transfer for the Brazilian, with the veteran’s contract at the Parc des Princes coming to an end very soon.

Now, speaking ahead of PSG’s cup final against St Etienne, Silva revealed that whilst he didn’t want to leave the club, a decision on his future has already been made.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “They asked if I could stay, but it’s not my decision. Now is not the time to talk about this topic. We will have time to talk about it later. I didn’t want to leave, but the decision has already been made. I respect (the decision) and will respect it until the end. There are no further discussions (about my future). Leonardo (the PSG sporting director) has already spoken to the press.”

Burden on the books

A few years ago, Silva moving to Spurs would surely have been seen as a massive coup, but now with him being 35 – he will turn 36 in September – that isn’t really the case.

The Brazilian has suffered numerous niggling injuries over these past few years, and the older he gets, the harder it will become for him to stay clear of it too.

Earning a reported £280k-a-week, picking up Silva’s wages would be a major problem for Daniel Levy and Spurs, Even if he were to take a considerable pay cut, it would still leave him amongst the Lilywhites’ highest earners.

In fact, if he were to take a 50% cut, Silva’s weekly wage of £140k would place him as the joint-third highest earner in the squad, with only Heung-min Son, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane to accompany him.

Despite being considered a locker room leader by former French ace Frederic Piquionne, that dressing room presence alone is simply not enough to warrant Spurs shelling out tonne of money on wages, especially given the current financial circumstances.

Levy must steer well clear of making a move.

Chelsea: Blues interested in Flamengo’s Gerson to bolster midfield

With various ins and outs reportedly happening this summer at Chelsea, a new name has been circulating around the media. Flamengo midfielder Gerson is a player that the club are looking to pursue and are hopeful of signing in the upcoming transfer window.

According to Fox News via The Sun, Chelsea have been impressed by what they have seen of the midfielder, although they are not the only club interested as Borussia Dortmund are also keeping tabs on the player with his valuation set at around £30m.

For this to come to fruition, an overhaul might be needed at Stamford Bridge but it seems like that might be happening as well, with The Sun reporting that N’Golo Kante and Jorginho could be on their way out to fund Kai Havertz.

If they are able to use some of the funds that might be available if they sell Kante and Jorginho, then Gerson could be an ideal type of midfielder to be drafted into the squad. In his last full season in 2018/19, he played for Fiorentina in Serie A, where he managed 36 appearances and picked up three goals and three assists; and then moved to Brazilian side Flamengo, where he has played 27 times in the league, scoring twice and picking up three assists, per Transfermarkt.

As a central midfielder his job could well be to break up opposition attacks, similar to Kante and Jorginho, and manager Frank Lampard will need to replace them if they do go, so Gerson could be the ideal addition. The 23-year-old has also featured for Brazil’s under-20 team on 10 occasions so there is no doubt that he has potential, given his international recognition.

He might not be a priority signing for Chelsea but it is a good transfer target for the club to have if they  need to reinforce their midfield options depending on the futures of Kante and Jorginho.

The Chalkboard: Where will Oxlade-Chamberlain fit in after long injury absence?

[ad_pod ]Per The Mirror, Liverpool fans are getting excited on TwitterÂover the impending return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, so where will the midfielder fit in Jurgen Klopp’s title-chasing side following his long injury absence?

On the chalkboard

With no FA Cup fixture to play this weekend due to the defeat at Wolves, Klopp and the Reds are taking advantage of their extended break, flying off to Dubai for a warm weather training camp – as documented by The Daily Mail.

The league leaders scraped past Crystal Palace on Saturday, and now have a week and a half off before they welcome Leicester City to Anfield next Wednesday evening.

And there is good news, as Oxlade-Chamberlain has undergone some pretty rigorous training, according to The Mirror.

Who has the loudest fans in Europe? PSG certainly state their claim in the video below…

What does it mean?

Well, just because the 25 year-old is with the squad does not mean he is in full training, and he is not expected to be ready until late February at the earliest – according to The Times’ Paul Joyce.

However, it means the Anfield fan favourite is clearly on the right path, and will likely return to first team action at some point this season.

But a serious knee injury can have devastating effects on a player’s speed, quickness and agility, so expect to see him participating in several training matches and potentially even Under-23 matches before stepping onto the Anfield turf once again.

Where will he fit?

When Oxlade-Chamberlain does return, Klopp is suddenly going to have one mighty selection headache on his hands, so where does the ex-Arsenal man fit in?

Fabinho quite simply can’t be dropped on current form, as the Brazil international has been superb in multiple positions since breaking into the side, and Georginio Wijnaldum is quietly having the best season of his career.

This leaves just one spot to fight for between Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and the returning Oxlade-Chamberlain, and the latter looks a perfect fit for that final place.

Wijnaldum and Fabinho offer loads of defensive protection but limited attacking output, practically ruling out Liverpool’s captain and vice-captain as complimentary options, and summer signing Keita deserves to drop even further down the pecking order based on this season’s poor form.

While he shares many traits with Oxlade-Chamberlain that also make him a good fit for the third slot in Liverpool’s engine room, the former Leipzig man simply hasn’t acclimatised to the Premier League as well as expected.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain can regain full fitness before the end of this season, the England international should be first choice alongside Fabinho and Wijnaldum, offering Klopp the perfect balance of speed, creativity, work-rate and defensive awareness.

So, Liverpool fans, what would be your preferred midfield when Oxlade-Chamberlain returns? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

He said: “When I scored, I knew the fans were near. So I wanted us all to be together to celebrate this goal. It’s the first time I scored in front of our fans so I wanted to show all my gratitude.”

WHAT THEY SAID

Balogun has been acquired by Monaco to deliver end product, but head coach Hutter claims the 22-year-old beings much more than that to the fold. He said of seeing the American open his goal account: “I’m very happy for him and for his first goal with the club, I think it’s deserved. He had already scored with the USMNT during the international break. He is a player who brings other skills to the attacking third. But we also have players like Wissam Ben Yedder, Myron Boadu, Takumi Minamino and Aleksandr Golovin who can also bring us things offensively.”

There are now two United States internationals on the books at the Allianz Stadium, with McKennie having returned from a forgettable loan spell at Leeds during which he suffered relegation out of the Premier League. He has been joined in Turin by countryman Weah following a €12 million (£10m/$13m) summer transfer deal.

The American duo have found themselves competing against one another for game time under Allegri in 2023-24, with both being asked to fill a right wing-back role. McKennie has been getting the nod when it comes to starting berths, with Weah often being brought on in his place.

WHAT THEY SAID

McKennie has done his best in an unfamiliar role, but the 25-year-old’s father feels the time has come to stop putting square pegs into round holes. John McKennie has responded to a post on social media asking if Allegri should be fired before the end of the season by saying: “Put McKennie in the midfield! Weah on the wing. They have proven they play well together in their respective positions!”

McKennie senior went on to add that: “I have my own opinions, but would never wish anyone to be fired. At the end of the day, the coach has a plan. We don’t have to like it! I am also a fan, but he’s the COACH! Let’s not take my words out of context!”

Next Napoli manager: Julian Nagelsmann, Rafa Benitez and the candidates to replace Luciano Spalletti at the Serie A champions

Aurelio De Laurentiis has sensationally fallen out with the man who ended the club's 33-year Scudetto drought, and is now looking for a new coach

Well, it's actually happening. Despite leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years, Luciano Spalletti is set to leave the Partenopei at the end of the season. The coach effectively confirmed his departure in an emotional press conference after Sunday's win over Inter.

"The matter has been decided, you don't change your mind every day," he told reporters. "It is a situation that has been brewing for a long time. If you are not convinced that you can give everything these people deserve, it's right to think it over. You think it over, you arrive at a conclusion and then you stick with it. This is not something that just fell from the sky out of nowhere."

The reason for his shock exit is a falling-out with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who is already looking for a new manager, with several familiar faces in contention to take over at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

GOAL runs through the leading candidates to succeed Spalletti as the manager of the newly-crowned champions of Italy…

Getty ImagesJulian Nagelsmann

Talk of De Laurentiis turning to Julian Nagelsmann took many by surprise, but it does make some sense. Most importantly of all, he's available after being surprisingly sacked by Bayern Munich during the March international break – and what a disastrous decision that has proven to be. Furthermore, despite his dismissal, he is still regarded as one of the most interesting and innovative young coaches in the game today.

However, this one is unlikely to happen for one very important reason: money. Nagelsmann would demand a hefty pay packet and De Laurentiis appears unwilling to pay more than €6 million (£5.2m/$6.5m) net. It's doubtful that such a salary would satisfy a coach that rates himself as highly as many neutral observers.

AdvertisementGettyThiago Motta

Thiago Motta has come a long way since arousing suspicion and scepticism with talk of a goalkeeper-less 2-7-2 formation during his time in charge of Paris Saint-Germain Under-19s. Indeed, it's probably only a matter of time before the former Italy international is given one of the top jobs in European football, maybe even at the Parc des Princes – or another former stomping ground, San Siro…

However, right now, he's being linked with Napoli on account of the excellent work he's done in his first season at Bologna. Succeeding Sinisa Mihajlovic at the helm was always going to be a difficult job, for a variety of reasons, but Motta has turned the Rossoblu into one of the best footballing sides in Serie A.

He wouldn't just be an attractive option for De Laurentiis because of his style of play, though – he'd also be a less expensive appointment. Still, it feels like this opportunity hasn't quite come at the right time for the 40-year-old, who still has to prove he is as good a manager as he was a player.

Getty ImagesGian Piero Gasperini

The mastermind behind Atalanta's remarkable journey from provincial club to Champions League contenders, Gian Piero Gasperini has been in Bergamo for seven years now and, at 65, there is every chance that he will retire there.

However, like pretty much everyone else in Italian football, De Laurentiis holds Gasperini in the highest esteem and was ready to hire him a decade ago before former boss Walter Mazzarri decided to extend his stay in Naples for another season.

So, is Gasperini likely to leave his beloved Atalanta for Napoli? No. But it's easy to understand why De Laurentiis would be interested in a coach renowned for playing fantastic football with a mix of rejects and raw talents.

(C)Getty ImagesRoberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi is understandably viewed as the ideal man to replace Spalletti. The pair share a similar view of the game and, as the former has previously proven at Sassuolo, and presently at Brighton, he is capable of achieving incredible results on a relatively small budget. There's also the fact that De Zerbi spent four years on Napoli's books during his playing days.

However, while De Zerbi appears destined to return to the Maradona as coach one day, we might be waiting a while. The Brescia native appears to be quite enjoying his experience in England and has just qualified Brighton for Europe. While some of his star players may leave the Amex Stadium this season, he is likely to stay put.

What's more, when he does eventually decide to depart, it could well be for one of the top jobs in the Premier League, given De Zerbi is currently earning ridiculously high praise from the likes of Pep Guardiola.

David de Gea, Harry Maguire and the five players Man Utd must FINALLY show the exit door this summer

The Red Devils have made great strides forward under Erik ten Hag, but must clear out some deadwood in order to get back to the very top

Manchester United have undoubtedly made significant progress under Erik ten Hag this season, but the pitfalls of the squad were laid brutally bare against Sevilla in the Europa League.

The Red Devils were stewed in the cauldron that is the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, crumbling against a side languishing in 13th place in La Liga and exiting the Europa League quarter-finals with 3-0 defeat and a whimper.

🏆 TOP STORY: Ronaldo faces NO punishment for obscene gesture📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Who should replace woeful De Gea at Man Utd?🚨 MUST READ: What UCL return means for Arsenal

Centre-back Harry Maguire and goalkeeper David de Gea were the culprits for two calamitous goals, while they were dominated in pretty much all facets of the game by their struggling hosts.

If more new faces are to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, it will be necessary for a few stragglers to be cut loose, and GOAL has identified five players that should definitely be on that list of potential outgoings…

GettyDavid de Gea

De Gea has been a great servant for Manchester United, there is certainly no doubt about that.

Since being lured to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011, the Spain international has appeared in 530 games for United, which puts him ninth in the club's all-time list.

He surpassed Peter Schmeichel's clean sheet record after recording his 181st shut-out for United in their Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle, and also has Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League winners' medals on his CV.

However, De Gea has been costing United points on a regular basis for the best part of the last five years. His standards began to slip in Jose Mourinho's final year at the helm, with lazy errors becoming a regular occurrence.

The general consensus among a large section of supporters and pundits is that De Gea has returned to form this season – but those mistakes have not been cut out. His pair of horrendous errors against Sevilla brutally exposed his lack of ability with the ball at his feet, in an era where keepers are expected to do far more than simply make saves.

The reality is, the 32-year-old doesn't offer anything beyond the occasional camera save, and he is actually holding back the current squad. His distribution remains poor and he doesn't command his box, with United's defence often left alone to deal with high balls that would be bread-and-butter for most top-level keepers.

De Gea's current contract is up this summer, but he has made it clear he wants to remain in Manchester, and it has been reported that negotiations with the club are progressing well. United would be wise to pull out of those talks immediately and focus on signing a new No.1 – with the man who has replaced him in the Spain national team, Brentford's David Raya, among those reported to be on the club's radar who would be a much better fit for Ten Hag's side.

AdvertisementGettyVictor Lindelof

Lindelof joined United from Benfica back in 2017, and has since featured in 213 games for the club, with the majority of those outings coming as a starter.

His playing time has been significantly reduced this season, though, with summer signing Lisandro Martinez getting the nod alongside Raphael Varane more often than not under Ten Hag.

Luke Shaw has even been deployed at centre-back ahead of Lindelof at times, with the Swede now filling a backup role that has left him frustrated.

Lindelof spoke out on his future while away on European Championship qualifying duty with his country last week, telling reporters: "Of course, like every player, you want to play every game and obviously I haven’t done that this season. In the summer we’ll re-evaluate and see what is best."

United could let Lindelof remain on the bench until he becomes a free agent in 2024, but cashing in this summer seems like the best option.

It has been reported that Inter could move for the 28-year-old, who might thrive if given a fresh start in Italy in the same way that his former team-mate Chris Smalling has done at Roma.

Lindelof has never quite been up to the required standard of a top United defender, and that remains evident whenever he does feature in Ten Hag's line up. His career at Old Trafford is already as good as over, and he should pursue a new challenge before his stock drops too low.

Getty ImagesScott McTominay

McTominay has often been compared to United great Darren Fletcher since breaking into the first team at Old Trafford, due to his combative style of play and never-say-die attitude.

The 26-year-old could never be accused on not giving his all, but he lacks the same footballing IQ that made Fletcher such a key part of Ferguson's squad in the final decade of his reign.

Ten Hag asked McTominay to push higher up the pitch and man mark Newcastle's star man Bruno Guimaraes at St James' Park on Sunday, but had to abandon that plan after just 15 minutes.

Guimaraes ran rings around the Scotland international, and he was unable to recover when dropped back into a deeper role alongside Marcel Sabitzer as the hosts took full control of the game.

Newcastle have been strongly linked with McTominay in recent months, but he spectacularly failed his audition. He's not good enough to be a regular in the Magpies' midfielder – let alone United's.

McTominay isn't even close to the level of Casemiro, who injected much-needed quality into the Red Devils' engine room after his move from Real Madrid last year. He became a figure of ridicule due to his ineffective partnership with Fred during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign, as the Brazilian was unfairly tarred with the same brush.

Fred isn't always first choice under Ten Hag now either, but he is technically astute and his passing range often helps to drive United forward, while McTominay is nothing more than a willing runner.

It has been apparent for some time that he does not belong at this level, and it makes little sense for United to keep him in their ranks, even as a squad player.

GettyAnthony Martial

Martial finally returned to action for United off the bench against Newcastle after missing 14 consecutive games due to a hip injury, replacing Burnley loanee Wout Weghorst.

Ten Hag has had no choice but to use Weghorst as his first choice No.9 due to Martial's fitness struggles, which have ultimately prevented him from delivering on the huge potential he showed in his debut season at the club back in 2015-16.

The France forward has only appeared in 15 games in all competitions this term, scoring six goals, leaving Marcus Rashford to shoulder the main goalscoring burden for the Red Devils.

Martial was given a clean slate after returning from a dismal loan spell at Sevilla last summer, but Ten Hag knows he cannot rely on the 27-year-old to lead his attack, in the short or long term.

After almost eight years in Manchester, Martial's time is finally up. He's had more than enough chances to prove himself under a whole host of different managers, but has always come up short.

United are reportedly prioritising a new striker in the summer window, with Tottenham's Harry Kane and Napoli sensation Victor Osimhen said to be on their radar. Even when fully fit, Martial would not see any game time ahead of either of those two players.

His body hasn't held up to the demands of elite-level football, but that only tells half the story. Question marks over Martial's attitude have always been there and he's not going to change now.

United have the option to extend Martial's contract beyond its 2024 expiry date, but he is already taking up a valuable spot in the squad – all while pocketing a reported £250,000-per-week in wages.

The time has come for both parties to say au revoir.

Arsenal back on top! Winners, losers and ratings as Jesus shines again, Vieira opens account & Nwaneri makes history

The Gunners returned to the top with a thumping 3-0 success at Brentford, and also introduced 15-year-old Ethan Nwaneri to the Premier League.

Arsenal enjoyed a near-perfect afternoon as they bounced back from their defeat at Manchester United with a thumping 3-0 win at Brentford on Sunday.

From the moment William Saliba headed them in front on 17 minutes, Mikel Arteta's side were in cruise control and further goals from Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira saw them return to the top of the Premier League.

It was a wonderful performance from the Gunners, with Granit Xhaka imperious in the heart of the midfield.

The Switzerland international set up Arsenal's second goal of the afternoon with a curling cross which Jesus met with a thumping header.

And Vieira, making his first Premier League start in place of the injured Martin Odegaard, crashed home a sensational third soon after the interval to open his account for his new club.

The win moved Arsenal back above Manchester City and Tottenham into top spot in the Premier League ahead of the international break.

GettyThe Winners

Winner: Granit Xhaka

What a season Xhaka is having.

This was another outstanding performance from a player who continues to silence all of his doubters under Mikel Arteta.

His assist for Gabriel Jesus' goal was excellent, but his all-round display was one of a player who is bristling with confidence after an exceptional start to the season.

In defence, he continues to offer real protection to the back four and in attack, he is now consistently showing he has a lot to offer in the final third.

Many felt this could be the season that saw Xhaka eased out of the Arsnal starting XI, but instead he has cemented his place more than ever.

Winner: Kieran Tierney

This was undoubtedly Tierney's best performance of the season.

Having missed most of the summer due to injury and lost his place to Oleksandr Zinchenko, Tierney has looked a bit off the pace when called upon in recent weeks.

But this was much more like what we have come to expect from Tierney. He looked strong down the left-hand side and was full of energy.

He has looked sluggish at times this season and has struggled to get back in position when caught upfield.

There was none of that against Brentford, however, with the Scotland international looking as fit as he has done all season.

Winner: Fabio Vieira

What a way to introduce yourself.

There was plenty of concern amongst Arsenal fans pre-match when it was announced that Martin Odegaard was out with a calf problem.

But the captain's absence gave Vieira his first league start since his move from Porto and the £35m man seized the opportunity in sensational style, scoring his first goal for the club with a wonderful effort from 25 yards.

It was a goal which capped a tidy performance from the new boy, who has made quite the impression in the past couple of weeks as Arteta has begun to integrate him into the side.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Loser: Martin Odegaard

The Arsenal captain will have been watching on disappointed at home having had to drop out of the squad at the last minute through injury.

Odegaard will now be hoping that the calf problem he has picked up is nothing serious, especially with the north London derby on October 1 looming large.

The Gunners skipper has been carrying the issue for a few weeks and Arsenal decided it was best not to risk him after he felt it once again during Friday afternoon's final training session.

Odegaard will now sit out the upcoming international break as he attempts to recover fully before the Tottenham game at the start of next month.

Loser: Ivan Toney

There won't be any sarcastic tweets from the Brentford striker after this one.

He would have been hoping to celebrate his England call-up with a goal against the Gunners, but instead he was barely given a kick by William Saliba or Gabriel Magalhaes.

The two Arsenal centre-backs were superb throughout and Toney looked visibly frustrated as the game wore on.

His mood would not have been helped by the Arsenal fans enjoying themselves at his expense during the closing stages, chanting: "Ivan Toney, a stroll in the park."

GettyArsenal Ratings: Defence

Aaron Ramsdale (6/10):

Made one big save in the second half, other than that he barely had anything to do.

Ben White (7/10):

Another excellent performance which makes a mockery of his absence from the England squad.

William Saliba (9/10):

Another goal from the centre-back and another near perfect display.

Gabriel Magalhaes (8/10):

Dealt with Toney really well, which was all the more impressive considering he was clearly carrying an injury.

Kieran Tierney (8/10):

His best performance of the season. Looks back to full fitness.
